I’m going to be really honest here…writing the intro for this podcast was REALLY HARD. After all, what do you focus on when the ENTIRE SHOW is so freaking good? Whether it's talking about training autonomy, N=1 training, the art of performance management, different archetypes and training buckets, or the role of pure strength and […] The post Andrew Paul on the Art of Performance Management and the Rhythm of Life in the NBA appeared first on Robertson Training Systems.

Does returning 3 of 5 on the offensive line mean the offense will still put up big numbers? How will the new look defense be with new DC Luke Olson coming in? Will Jrock Swain be a name to watch on the defensive line? Should we be worried about the inexperience at the linebacker spot? Andrew Paul is the Director of Performance and Rehabilitation for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is both a sports performance coach and a physical therapist. Andrew has learned from a variety of performance and biomechanics experts and has a deep knowledge of individual factors in athletic movement, training, and performance. Individual factors in athletic movement and understanding the nuance of training in the athletic equation are where the future of training and performance is heading. At high levels of sport, this understanding becomes increasingly important to maximize players' health and vitality while catering to their primary performance drivers. Last time on the show, Andrew talked about the difference between propulsive and absorbing actions, as seen on court and in training. For this episode, we dig into Andrew's take on movement screens and how particular types of athletes tend to be biased to excel in those tests. We also deeply discuss forefoot and rearfoot-oriented elastic athletes and mid-foot dominant athletes and how these aspects play out in court movement and training. This was another fantastic discussion with a brilliant performance mind. I did go through a phase in my career where I was using (FMS) pretty heavily, particularly when I was in college, because I think the functional movement screen is meant to be used at scale. And in my current environment, we only deal with 18 players and so we don't really need anything that's utilized at scale." - Andrew Paul (3:40) Propulsive movers tend to rely on deep ranges of motion. And the reason why they rely on those things is because they're using a long concentric pushing action to create momentum, they tend to have more access to range of motion. They tend, and something like the FM's score higher than, than someone who's very fascial or elastic in nature. - Andrew Paul (14:42) "Rear foot elastics really use their tripod well when they go from horizontal to vertical." - Andrew Paul (22:40) “The fore-foot elastic to me is built for the long jump. Yes, it's like these are the guys that jogged on the court and dunk from the free throw line, but they're also the guys that don't have, like, a power dunking ability. Like they need a lot of Runway to get their way up there. And then the rear foot elastic is a lot what you're talking about there. They, they kind of have to move in a spiral” (27:28) "I define the midfoot as when a majority of your weight is on the back side ball of your foot." - Andrew Paul (29:47) “And we, in jumping drills, we'll go barefoot and we will define. You are no, when. If you land on your toes and you rock back to your midfoot,

Today's podcast features NBA performance coach Andrew Paul. Andrew is the Director of Performance and Rehabilitation for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is both a sports performance coach, as well as a physical therapist, and utilizes his wide-ranging expertise in his position. Andrew has previous experience in the NCAA, as well as with military special operations, and was named the NBSCA strength coach of the year in 2022-2023. As the sports performance profession moves forward, we are understanding that training is not a one-size fits all experience, while finding new ways to classify athlete archetypes, exercise classifications, and how to piece it together to meet the needs of an athlete. Part of what makes training and coaching enjoyable is seeing the diverse range of athletic movers, and the optimal exercises and concepts by which to create their programming. On today's podcast, Andrew discusses key differences between muscular and elastic movers in basketball and related training implications. He goes into propulsive and absorption-based exercises, range of motion concepts based on athlete types, and how to assign individualized training based on strengths, weaknesses, and the needs of an NBA season. He also speaks on slow-tempo work, connective tissue health, foot training, and much more on this information-dense podcast. Andrew is pushing the envelope in high-performance training, and I really enjoyed this conversation. Today's episode is brought to you by TeamBuildr, the Plyomat, and LILA Exogen. Historians paint colonial New Zealanders as "smug bucolic hobbits", but alternative spirituality was part of life for many in the 19th and early 20th centuries, says Andrew Paul Wood. The historian and journalist explores a range of homegrown occult groups – and their intriguing leaders – in his new book Shadow Worlds: A History of the Occult and Esoteric in New Zealand.

Asheville For All is a new nonprofit run by volunteers, but it's addressing a need in Asheville that goes back decades—developing more affordable housing. Andrew Paul and John DeRusso, two of the founding volunteers behind Asheville For All, talk about their political advocacy, the resistance to add more housing often coming from existing homeowners and how they're making the case for investment from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority.Support The Overlook by joining our Patreon campaign!Advertise your event on The Overlook.Instagram: AVLoverlook | Facebook: AVLoverlook | Twitter: AVLoverlookListen and Subscribe: All episodes of The OverlookThe Overlook theme song, "Maker's Song," comes courtesy of the Asheville band The Resonant Rogues.Podcast Asheville © 2023
Andrew Paul grew up in a military family. His grandfather enlisted in World War II at age 17 and flew B-17 bombers in Europe. Other family members were submariners, pilots, a master chief, and a vice commander. As a boy, Andrew remembers the family sitting in the living room watching military documentaries together and telling stories about their own experiences. "At a pretty young age, I got it in my head I was going to go in the military one day," he said. Despite people trying to discourage Andrew, who was 5'7" and 155 pounds, he was dead set on becoming a Navy SEAL. At Vanderbilt University, he joined ROTC, the reserve officers training program. He learned there that the SEALs only take 16 candidates each year. Determined to become one, he won a slot to go to the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. Then 9/11 happened. "All of a sudden, the tone of everything changes. No longer was I like, 'This is going to be training. I'm going to be a SEAL.' We knew that if we got through training we were going to war," he said. Andrew underwent rigorous training meant to discourage and dissuade the heartiest of souls. It included physical preparation, dive training, small unit tactics, ambushes and raids, explosives, patrolling, sleep deprivation, mission planning, and finally SEAL qualification training. Making his way through the whole program, he was then assigned to a SEAL team. "After all that, you're in a SEAL team and you have zero experience," Andrew said. Andrew was deployed several times and he has faced extreme challenges that I can't imagine. In this episode of Chiseled, he shares what it was like becoming a member of the SEALs, rising through the ranks, and deciding when and why it was time to leave. Speaking of endurance training, Andrew went from being in the military at the start of America's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to becoming a mortgage lender at the start of the 2008 housing crash. As expected, he hustled his way through the financial crisis and ended up on top. He now helps veterans and others become homeowners in his adopted state of California. If you have questions about his experience or want to talk about mortgage lending, you can reach Andrew at teamandrew@benchmark.us or call him at 619-964-9404. You can also find him at www. theveteranadvocate.com.

One of these days I'll talk about why we've been away from the Coffeeshop for a while. Right now I'm happy this is a new Coffeeshop Conversations episode, and hopefully it won't be long until we're back in the friendly confines of Artichoke Music. Our returning champion is Andrew Paul Woodworth. When we need some good cheer, he's my first call. Little did I know that he has lost a little of the sarcasm and irony because of his baby son. It's still there, but it's been replaced by becoming a father. Even better. Oh, by the way, he talks about his favorite movie being Pulp Fiction, which I think is a bogus film. He has since told me that in fact, his favorite film is True Romance. And yes, he wouldn't mind being Christian Slater. He's writing new songs and I can't wait for you to find out how they've changed. Here's my pal, Andrew Paul Woodworth.

As strange as it may be, research has shown that shared painful experiences actually promote stronger relationships, increased trust and willing cooperation. Can shared experiences then—both good and bad—bond teams together to create an environment for success? Andrew Paul shares how the intensity of his Navy SEAL training fostered deep connection within his team—causing them to think less about themselves and more about each other. This shared experience of suffering formed a team of people who began to see each new obstacle as a challenge to overcome—together. Learn how you can apply this idea to your own team and build resiliency within your organization.
