In this episode we examine the pride, the pain, and the double-edged nature of identification, exploring along the way: a difference in attitudes towards work; the influence of a working-class upbringing; a working-class perspective on work, and its conflicts with a middle-class perspective; the struggle to identify with professional roles; Aidan Wachter on identification as a magical technique; the liberating potential of identification and identification as a trap; my continuing identification with being working class; the imposition of identification; against the (classist) argument that education changes social class; working-class alienation from power and privilege; professional identity as a means of exploitation of the middle class; middle-class discontent; varieties of identification; identification as the mother of all defence mechanisms; Jacques Lacan on identification and "the mirror stage"; identification and the birth of the ego as captivation in an image; identification and ignorance; Kazuo Ishiguro's novel, Never Let Me Go, about some unusual students; Ishiguro's genius for depicting the limited understanding of his characters; the horror of the students' surrender to their fate; Ishiguro's novel as an analogy for the creation of social class; education as a means of ensuring docility; the film The Island (2005) as a Hollywood variation on the same theme; the fantasy of breaking out of an oppressive reality into another one; an annoying feature of The Matrix (1999); the impossibility of self-transformation; Plato's allegory of the cave; how the prisoners are conditioned to imprison themselves; Russell Brand on the décor of power; the social sense of "belonging" for the working and middle class; the ruling class at home in and beyond the law; shame and guilt as instruments of social control; the shift into identity politics and away from social class; identity politics in "heroic" and "tragic" modes; enduring shame and guilt; the escape from Plato's cave and what this might signify; a hope for a spiritual, anti-materialism as a future, defining philosophy for the Left.

In this episode, Kelle talks about magick; what it is, what it’s used for, and how to bring it into your life. She says that anyone can effectively learn to use magick, but they must do their inner work to clear energetic blocks that are created throughout childhood that cause each and every one of us to have false beliefs about the world. In addition, Kelle talks about how to use magick safely, what happens when you mess up while doing magick, and how to avoid unintended pitfalls.References:-For more information about Kelle Sparta: www.kellesparta.com-To contact Kelle email: kelle@kellesparta.com-Driveabout (Spirit Sherpa Theme): Driveabout (Full Version)--Written by: Kelle Sparta--Performed by: Kelle Sparta and Daniel Singer--Produced by: Daniel Singer-The Matrix. Atentos. Vais a alucinar... Dirige, presenta y produce: David Cuevas.

An attorney harbors a fleeing slave on a voyage from the Pacific Islands in 1849; a poor composer in pre-World War II Britain struggles to finish his magnum opus before a past act catches up with him; a genetically engineered worker in 2144 feels the forbidden stirring of human consciousness -- and so on. As souls are born and reborn, they renew their bonds to one another throughout time.

People often talk about the great movie year of 1999, and one of the great films that came out that year is 'The Matrix,' the film that made bullet-time a filmmaking standard and stunt wire work almost an expectation in action films. But it's a great film because of its script, written by Lana née Larry and Andy Wachowski, who went on to co-direct it as well. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we delve into our next Listener's Choice movie selection with 'The Matrix.' We talk about the script and how it works in the world of science fiction, but also how the script goes beyond that by including elements from a wide variety of other sources — religions, movie genres, writings and theories, etc. We discuss how well it does with these heavier and headier ideas, and if those elements matter when watching the film to make it enjoyable. We chat about the cast and crew and everything they're bringing to the table to create this amazing world. We mention the film just had its 15th birthday and argue about whether it holds up as well as it first did or if it's showing its age now. And we really have to deliberate with this versus several other films we've discussed in previous episodes when trying to rank it on Flickchart. It's a great film that's well worth talking about. We mention the film just had its 15th birthday and argue about whether it holds up as well as it first did or if it's showing its age now. And we really have to deliberate with this versus several other films we've discussed in previous episodes when trying to rank it on Flickchart. It's a great film that's well worth talking about. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we delve into our next Listener's Choice movie selection with 'The Matrix.' Nicole Kidman has taken on two emotionally challenging roles in the psychological horror Stoker and the thriller The Paperboy. She talks to Mark Lawson about her decision to take risks with the roles she chooses and why she never googles herself. David Mitchell's award-winning novel, Cloud Atlas, consists of six interweaving stories set in different times - from a slave on a 19th century ship, to a composer in 1930s England, to a clone in 22nd century Korea, to a tribe in a post-apocalyptic 24th century. It's now been turned into a film, written, produced and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski (of Matrix fame) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). The film version features a set of lead actors including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant, who all play different roles in each of the storylines - and are sometimes almost unrecognisable under heavy make-up. Author and critic Adam Mars-Jones joins Mark to assess how successfully the film captures the spirit of the novel. Writer Margaret Forster discusses her latest novel, The Unknown Bridesmaid, inspired by a chance discovery in a second-hand bookshop, and explains why she is content to be left behind by advances in technology. Producer Nicki Paxman.
The Matrix is a 1999 American science fiction action film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, and Hugo Weaving. It depicts a dystopian future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality or cyberspace created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Computer programmer "Neo" discovers this truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, which involves other people who have been freed from the "dream world" and into reality. - Wikipedia
