The Grouches watch the next movie in the Best Original Screenplay series, "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" from 2014.
Michael Keaton is an actor typecast from his previous superhero films now trying to be taken seriously on Broadway in the 2014 Academy Award winning film “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).”
Our Oscar winning series continues into the 2010s, with the 2014 Best picture winner, Birdman. We open up the show this week by talking about the unexpected connection to our last best picture No Country for Old Men. We dive into the blurred lines between what's real and imagined, we talk about the difference between love and admiration and wax poetics on the meaning of the title the unexpected virtue of ignorance. A thing is a thing, not what is said of that thing. Well in this case that thing is our podcast and it's just pretty much a podcast. That's this week on Hell of a Picture.
Helen and Gavin chat about Love Hurts, Companion, I'm Still Here, and Paddington in Peru, and it's Week 44 of the list of Oscar Best Picture Winners from 2015 and 2016; Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), and Spotlight.

While Mikey and d$ looked ahead to the movies to come for 2024 in last week's auction ep (thanks to Roth from Wyoming and Lil G, aka The Spawn of Ryfun, aka the Pride of Columbus, Garrizzle Ryfizzle for joining us), this week... we take a look at the past. It's Hollywood Lore that the Best Picture nominee list went from 5 to anywhere from 7 to 10 after "The Dark Knight" was denied the honor in 2008's list (hence, 2009's list of 10 films!), but we wondered what would happen if they kept it at 5 films only... Meaning, in some years, the list needed to be culled by a couple of films... in others, as many as 5 had to be cut. It's a great discussion on movies loved and not-so-loved, movies worthy and therefore argued over, and movies passed over quickly, lucky to have been mentioned at all.
