GDP Script/ Top Stories for July 12th Publish Date: July 12th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, July 12th and Happy Birthday to Christine McVie I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett charges dropped against detained journalist Mario Guevara Georgia Power to update energy forecasts amid uncertain demand Lawmakers conclude listening tour on access to cancer care All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett charges dropped against detained journalist Mario Guevara Local journalist Mario Guevara, known for covering Atlanta's Hispanic community and ICE operations, is no longer facing traffic charges in Gwinnett County. Solicitor General Lisamarie Bristol announced insufficient evidence to prosecute charges of reckless driving, unlawful use of a telecommunication device, and failure to obey signs, as the incidents occurred on private property. However, Guevara still faces federal immigration charges, with ICE questioning his legal status despite his work permit and ongoing efforts toward permanent residency. Guevara claims he is being targeted for his journalism, which has drawn local and national attention. STORY 2: Georgia Power to update energy forecasts amid uncertain demand Georgia Power's 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) faces scrutiny for overestimating energy demand, driven by the rapid growth of data centers. Critics, including environmental groups, argue the projections could leave ratepayers covering billions in stranded assets if demand falls short. While Georgia Power committed to updating forecasts and reporting on large-load projects, many called for stronger demand-side management (DSM) efforts to reduce energy needs. The utility plans to increase DSM spending from $90M to $160M annually, but some remain dissatisfied. The PSC will vote next week, with debates ongoing over coal plant operations and natural gas upgrades. STORY 3: Lawmakers conclude listening tour on access to cancer care Around 66,000 Georgians will be diagnosed with cancer this year, with 19,000 deaths expected, prompting state lawmakers to study ways to reduce these rates. Georgia exceeds national averages for lung, prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer, with rural areas facing significant barriers to care due to rising costs, limited access, and medical industry consolidation. Experts highlighted issues like pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) controlling drug markets and low reimbursement rates for clinics. Lawmakers aim to address drug pricing, access to screenings, and systemic healthcare challenges, with plans to continue studying cancer care access and solutions. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Deputies: Buford man threw deep freezer at 59-year-old at Lake Lanier after fight over nudity A Buford man, Logan Nicholas Young, 42, was arrested on July 3 after a bizarre incident on Lake Lanier involving public indecency, a fight, and a flying deep freezer. Young allegedly got naked on a boat, argued with a 59-year-old man, punched him, and later threw a deep freezer at him, causing a head injury and knocking him into the lake. Deputies found Young hiding under a bed on his houseboat after he ignored their attempts to contact him. He was charged with six offenses, including aggravated assault, and released on bond on July 6. STORY 5: Robert Michener named Gateway85 CID's interim executive director The Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID) appointed longtime employee Robert Michener as interim executive director following Emory Morsberger's resignation after nearly 20 years of involvement. Michener, with 17 years at Gateway85, previously served as director of operations, overseeing infrastructure, security, and landscaping projects. Board Chairman Shiv Aggarwal praised Morsberger's contributions and welcomed Michener's leadership during the transition. The CID will continue focusing on economic development, mobility, and quality of life improvements as it searches for a permanent leader. Michener expressed excitement about guiding the district's next phase of growth. Break 3: STORY 6: 'Superman' stars excited to bring DC reboot to theaters Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced, and Anthony Carrigan star in the new "Superman" reboot, with Gathegi playing Mr. Terrific, Merced as Hawkgirl, and Carrigan debuting as Metamorpho. At a red carpet event in Atlanta, Gathegi contrasted his survival as Mr. Terrific with his infamous death as Darwin in "X-Men: First Class." Merced highlighted the mix of CGI and practical sets, comparing her Hawkgirl role to her experience in "Dora the Explorer." Carrigan, excited to bring fan-favorite Metamorpho to life, praised the detailed makeup used instead of CGI. STORY 7: Gwinnett fire investigators say arsonist tried to burn down Lawrenceville home Gwinnett County fire officials are investigating a suspected arson at a Lawrenceville home on Clairidge Lane on June 27. Firefighters responded to a fire alarm and smoke report, discovering an incendiary device behind the home. The fire was out by the time they arrived, and no injuries were reported. Officials are seeking public help to identify the suspect, with a potential reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Tips can be directed to the Gwinnett Fire Investigations Section or the Georgia Arson Control Hotline. The time is finally here. My most anticipated movie of the year - James Gunn's SUPERMAN - is finally arriving in theaters this weekend. I had the incredible opportunity to see this movie at an early Fan First Screening yesterday, which is how I'm getting this review out about the time it is debuting worldwide, in a select few countries today. This is the official, theatrical launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU, that I really hope will actually have the chance to thrive. I love DC Comics, and I've loved Superman since I was a small child. I was introduced to the character through the Justice League cartoons and the original 1978 Richard Donner film. I dressed up as Superman and tried to do the curl and all of that. It has been a LONG wait to finally have another Superman movie on the big screen, and - boy, oh boy - has it been a tumultuous one.I was a huge fan of Henry Cavill's Superman and am one of the people who love Man of Steel. Zack Snyder's Justice League is one of my favorite comic book movies of all-time too, but the toxicity around the excitement and hate for this new movie has been rough. It's the 'sports-ation' of movie fandoms that has really frustrated me over the last few years, and it's showcased no more clearly than how people talked about this movie up until release (and probably after release too). That being said, because the character means so much to me and because James Gunn's film really resonate with me on an emotional level, I've always known he was going to deliver a worthy film that starts the Big Blue again. You'd know that about me if you've listened to any of my reviews of James Gunn's films and shows, which are all glowing, and listened to my breakdowns of the trailers. The trailers certified for me that it seemed like Gunn was finally taking the character back to its much needed hopeful and optimistic, yet slightly retro, roots. So, does James Gunn's Superman deliver on its promises; is it the truest version of Superman we've had in a long time? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review!Superman:Written and Directed by: James GunnSuperman created by: Jerry Siegel & Joe ShusterProduced by: James Gunn, Peter SafranExecutive Producers: Nikolas Korda, Chantel Nong Vo, Lars P. The gang's all here this week! They cover White Lotus through Episode 5, Death of a Unicorn, Snow White, Nikki Glaser's recent tout, and The Electric State. Lauren is running late (you'll find out later) so Kevin and Andrew kick off the show discussing White Lotus through Episode 5. The season has been less than stellar in many ways and wildly controversial. The guys discuss a lot of what has made it less than successful and what's been working, as well as THAT scene with Sam Rockwell. While the season is finally trending upward, neither of the guys are super optimistic at this point. Andrew then takes us to the cinema with the latest A24 offering, Death of a Unicorn. While touting a solid cast, the movie somehow felt a little flat, which is not something we typically expect from an A24 offering. That said, some standout performances from Richard E. Grant and Anthony Carrigan made the film watchable, though maybe not worth rushing to the theater for. Having joined in the middle of Andrew's review of Death of a Unicorn, Lauren sticks with the fantastical and talks the new Snow White film. While Lauren doesn't feel like it's a bad film, it's not her favorite live action remake and Andrew argues that it probably SHOULD be, as it's a remake of the film that put Disney on the map. This also leads to some deeper philosophical discussion that is (probably) quite interesting. After this, Lauren takes a quick detour and talks about the stand-up show she just attended, the Nikki Glaser - Alive and Unwell Tour. She felt that it was maybe a little too "slice of life" as compared to funny, but all in all a solid show. Kevin closes the show with a quick rundown of The Electric State. Realistically, this is an OK film, but not something to get excited about. It has a fantastic cast and doesn't really do enough with it. It also steers away from the more bleak source material and goes with a more Starlord-y turn from Chris Pratt, making the film far too silly. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. This week we review Death of a Unicorn! Stay tuned to find out whether the laughs are real or mythological. Synopsis Paul Rudd plays the hapless single father Elliot to Jenna Ortega's, art history student Ridley. They both go on a work trip to a remote estate of Elliot's boss in a former wilderness preserve. While on driving there, they accidentally collide with a horse beast with a horn protruding out of it's head. Just a single horn. Like a uni-horn. When they try to hide the evidence from the CEO and his family, wacky low jinks ensue. Review of Death of a Unicorn While this film has an interesting premise and a good cast, the words that kept playing through my mind while watching this is “half baked”. Not like the wacky movie staring Jim Bruer and Dave Chappell, but more like a mouthful of hot brownie batter. It sounds good, but is actually disappointing. While there were a few situations in which I did laugh, they were few and far between, because what this horror comedy lacked most was jokes and bits. The characters were all 2 dimensional, which in a comedy can be counteracted with broad caricature, but the writing here attempts to be subtle and low key with poor results. In fact, Paul Rudd's character, ostensibly the second protagonist ends up being so wishy washy, that I was confused if he was supposed to be one of the villains. Jenna Ortega isn't as stone faced as usual, but she doesn't have much to work with here. In fact most of her dialogue felt like it must have read [fill in later]. Probably the most successfully subtle character is Anthony Carrigan's Griff the butler. There were some good gory death moments. The expected impalements are here. There are some good headsplosions. But it's not enough. I usually think it's a cop out to say a movie's CGI is bad, but for a movie dependent on monster design, they should have spent a little more time and money dialing in the unicorns. Score 4/10

Prepare for a surreal and thought-provoking ride as The Filmlosophers delve into A24's latest cinematic offering, Death of a Unicorn. Expect the unexpected as they unpack this likely bizarre and beautiful film. But the journey doesn't stop there. They're also tackling a different kind of existential crisis: Spencer's ongoing battle with the English language. In this episode: A24's Unicorn Enigma: The team will analyze the unique storytelling and visual language of Death of a Unicorn, exploring its likely surreal themes and dissecting its potential metaphors. The A24 Aesthetic: They'll discuss how Death of a Unicorn fits into A24's distinctive filmography and explore the studio's impact on contemporary cinema. Spencer vs. English: In a segment that promises to be both hilarious and perplexing, Spencer will unleash his pent-up frustration with the English language. Expect a chaotic exploration of grammar, pronunciation, and the sheer illogicality of it all. Language and Film: The team will attempt to connect the discussion about the oddities of English to the way RICH PEOPLE ARE SOMETIMES JUST CRAZY, specifically within the film Death of a Unicorn. Join The Filmlosophers for an episode that blends the surreal beauty of A24 with a delightfully chaotic linguistic breakdown. It's a journey from the realm of mythical creatures to the frustrating depths of the English language. On the latest episode of The Discourse, actor Will Poulter and writer-director Alex Scharfman joined host Mike DeAngelo to discuss their new A24 horror-comedy "Death of a Unicorn," a twisted genre mash-up that brings unicorns into the Spielbergian creature-feature fold. The film also stars Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Téa Leoni, Anthony Carrigan, Richard E. Grant, and Sunita Mani, and tells the story of a tech billionaire's lawyer and his daughter who accidentally hit a unicorn with their car and attempt to cover it up at an elite corporate retreat. Magical madness, death, and more unicorn action ensue!Poulter, having taken a break from comedy in recent years, said he relished playing Shepard, an Ivy League-bred man-child desperate for approval and woefully out of touch. "It's really fun to be conscious of the fact that everyone's going to be laughing at you, and never with you," he said. "You sort of feel like he's never really left the various ivory towers that his family own around the world, but thinks he's superior to everyone around him.”READ MORE: ‘Death of a Unicorn' Review: Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd Make Monster Movie Magic for A24 [SXSW]Despite his delusions of grandeur, Poulter was careful not to strip Shep of all humanity. "I don't want to absolve him of wrongdoing, but ultimately what it boils down to is the child-parent relationship," he explained. "What Shep really wants more than anything is approval from his dad, and he wants his mom to be more honest with him than she's ever been."
