Total network revenue exceeded Two-hundred-ten million dollars. Broadway Is My Beat first took to the air over CBS from New York on February 27th, 1949, It starred Anthony Ross and was directed by John Dietz. Dietz was a prolific radio man in the 1940s. He helped get Suspense off the ground and had success with New York-based shows like Casey, Crime Photographer. Early CBS press material for the show told how “as a kid, Danny Clover sold papers and shined shoes along the Great White Way. He later walked the beat as a policeman and knows everything along Broadway—from pan handler to operatic prima donna—but he's still sentimental. The street is forever a wonderland of glamor to him.” CBS was in the middle of the “Packaged Program Initiative.” When head of CBS William Paley returned from World War II in 1946, he saw his network behind NBC in ratings, revenue, and star power. Paley decided to greenlight and cost-sustain shows in order to develop hits not controlled by advertising agencies. The gamble paid off. By February of 1949 CBS had found success with sitcoms like My Friend Irma and Our Miss Brooks. The network was also using capital gains tax laws to sign production deals with stars like Jack Benny, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Red Skelton, and Bing Crosby. For a deep dive on this, please tune into Breaking Walls episodes 108 through 112. Meanwhile, after fifteen weeks Broadway is My Beat was floundering. CBS was going to pull the plug at the end of May when NBC found its first post-talent raid hit. A new police procedural, Dragnet, launched on June 3rd, 1949. The brainchild of Jack Webb, it was unlike anything heard on the air at that point. CBS brass decided to move Broadway is My Beat's production to Hollywood. Elliott Lewis was by then starring as Frankie Remley on The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show and helping to edit scripts for Bill Spier on Suspense. With the urging of men like Spier and Bill Robson, Lewis was given the chance to direct the newly migrated series. He was born in Manhattan on November 28th, 1917. He told Radio Life, “You should hear the city constantly. Even the people in New York are noisy.” Three soundmen were often needed to re-create that New York flavor. Lewis immediately tabbed Morton Fine and David Friedkin to write the series. Here's Morton Fine. Lewis' first episode came on Thursday, July 7th, 1949 when the repackaged Broadway is My Beat debuted as a summer replacement for The FBI In Peace And War. Larry Thor would star as Danny Clover. The change in tenor was immediately evident. Rounding out the regular cast was Charles Calvert as Tartaglia and Jack Kruschen doubling as both Sergeant Muggavan and Doctor Sinski. The last episode of the seven week summer run was “The Val Dane Case,” airing on August 25th, 1949. By then the show had begun to hit its stride. Broadway is My Beat stretched for the poetic metaphor and if the tone was sometimes heavy and wordy, the scenes were gritty, and the crimes were less-than-glamorous. After the initial summer run, the CBS network executives were happy with Elliott Lewis' work and decided to bring the show back in the fall.

From February 27, 1949, to August 1, 1954, CBS aired "Broadway Is My Beat," a radio crime series. The show initially took place in New York City during its first three months on the air, with Anthony Ross portraying Times Square Detective Danny Clover. Ross's portrayal of the character was well-received by audiences, and he quickly became a fan favorite. However, after the first season, Ross decided to leave the show to pursue other opportunities. As a result, the role of Detective Danny Clover was recast with Larry Thor taking over the role for the remainder of the season. Thor's performance was equally impressive, and he managed to make the character his own while still staying true to the original interpretation. The series was brought to life by the talented composer Robert Stringer, whose music set the tone and atmosphere for each episode. Together, these talented individuals collaborated to create a radio crime series that captivated audiences for five seasons. How we can learn to change our relationship to our thoughts. I have always believed in looking to other sports to see what we can learn to bring to our own sport. Often when we look outside the confines of our own world we can gain so much. So today it is great to welcome on to the Brain Booster Pat Flynn from the world of tennis. Pat's life story is an incredible one As a junior he was the Australian Junior Tennis Champion and went on to earn a scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. After the college career he went on to play professionally, reaching 390 in the world and winning the Queensland Hardcourt Championships. After his playing career, he coached both on the professional tour and as a Tennis Australia state coach. More recently, his love of the game drew him back to competing, resulting in him becoming the Australian 50+ Seniors Champion and recently became one of the oldest players in the world to qualify for a Pro Tour Event, defeating a world ranked player in the process. Throughout his journey, he has had a passion for the importance of the mental parts of the game and how it can positively influence our lives both on and off the court. This passion later led Pat to seek out Dr Anthony Ross and undergo his MTT training and become a certified Mentally Tough Tennis Performance Consultant. We look into the importance of early development and the way to get the best out of your time What we can learn from the time intervals in tennis and how we can use these insights for our golf The ability to get back to the moment and to RESET for this point in this moment The importance of good body language and how the body is always talking to our mind The ability to have your attention on RELEVANT cues in the present moment Pat present a useful model of how the mind works Imagine the mind is made up of three parts: Automatic Thoughts and Feelings (ATFs) – The ATFs pop into the head and body automatically based on previous experience and genetic factors. They can be helpful or unhelpful. Wisemind – It quietly gives wise advice to act in ways that align with values e.g. Strive to Win and Improve. Enjoy the Challenge. Be Fair and Respectful. You – You decide how to act after listening to the ATFs and Wisemind. Like many of those who have survived the ‘Troubled Teen' industry, I found myself being taken from my bedroom at 4am by strangers to a place called Ironwood Maine, or what some like to call, a Therapeutic Boarding School. Like others before me, I was stripped of my clothes and personal belongings, blocked from any contact with the outside world, and forced to sit outside in silence. I spent 5 days in the cold, forbidden to talk to anyone. I was fourteen years old. I learnt that I would have to earn a mattress, a pillow and free time without chores. The privilege to speak, to sit, to stand, to pour milk, to shower, and so many other basic human needs. Unless I did this, I would not be able to join the other girls in the program. He went on to become a top junior player and was recruited to join the Pepperdine Men's Tennis Team where he earned All-American status. After college, Anthony turned pro but retired when he realized he couldn't make a living on tour. While completing his professional run, he transitioned to coaching and got involved with his home tennis federation, Tennis Australia. Once Anthony started working with juniors, he quickly realized the importance of parent support for developing players so he created parent education workshops in conjunction with Tennis Australia. The parents bought right in to Anthony's process, and he's had tremendous success educating parents throughout his home country. In recent years, Anthony has brought his approach to Tennis Parents worldwide. He realized he needed to create a course to share with parents and has now launched the Parenting Healthy Mental Toughness Project, a 6-part online series that coaches and academies can purchase for the parents of their junior players. A portion of the proceeds go to charity, making this even better. Shortly thereafter, CBS executives decided the show sounded flat when compared with NBC's new police procedural Dragnet, which debuted on June 3rd. CBS moved production to Hollywood beginning on July 7th, and turned its direction over to Elliott Lewis. Lewis cast Larry Thor as Danny Clover, with Charles Calvert as Tartaglia and Jack Kruschen as Muggavan. The show’s chief scriptwriting duo was Morton Fine and David Friedkin. They wrote poetic prose, fit into the gritty world of a sardonic, case-hardened detective. This episode, “The Joey Croft Murder Case” was broadcast on Saturday June 23rd, 1952 at 9:30PM.
