What can Virgo energy teach us about deep listening? How can Pisces balance Virgo's energies? How can we incorporate the energy of Virgo and Pisces into ritual during the Full Moon? Join me for this lively impromptu conversation with my dear friend, Zaneta Sykes. We originally recorded this conversation for Instagram Live (you can watch the video version here). I ended up really loving the transmissions that came through so I decided to share this with all of you here, too.We discussed what Zaneta's Virgo Moon has taught them about artmaking and relationality through the practice of deep listening, how we can cultivate the energy of Virgo to its most expansive and life-giving expression, and also some ritual ideas for today's Virgo Full Moon. You can also listen to my conversation with Zaneta on Healing The Spirit: Listening To The Web of Life on Healing. If you live in the New York area, I invite to check out Zaneta's upcoming sound journey event on March 10, 2023, Where Land Meets Sky.Where Land Meets Sky is a somatic-sound journey of the elements, exploring the body's connection to water, fire, thunder, ice, wind, and seismic forces through listening. Participants will be guided through an immersive, listening experience, mapping the subtle sounds of the elements in the body. After listening, participants will co-create an original sound piece which will serve as a sonic offering to the forest, that will later be played back to every river, stream, ridge, cave, and tree that shared their songs. So that the entire project is a full circle, reciprocal exchange of listening and transmission between community and forest.Date: Friday March 10, 2023Time: 8p-10p ESTLocation: Grand Street Healing Project (105 Grand Street Brooklyn, NY 11249)Cost: $44 with sliding scale, pay what you can spots availableGet your tickets here.Included: 1 bottle of Moon Pool listening land essence, a recording of the community sound art piece, and video links to the offerings to the forestYou can find Zaneta's work on their website, Instagram, and podcast - Art Witch. What does it mean to listen? What does devoting our life to the practice of listening entail? How can listening assist us in cultivating deeper relationships with the greater web of life? This is a truly special and potent conversation I recorded with my dear friend and teacher, Zaneta Sykes. If you've been tuning in to this podcast for the past couple months, you know that I've been sharing my personal contemplations for the coming at the start of the week. On the final week of 2022, I decided to break the tradition and, instead, to share this conversation with all of you. During this liminal time, it feels more important than ever to focus our energies on listening to what's present for us: in our bodies, in our lives, in our relationships, in the collective.Zaneta has spent their life contemplating what it means to listen and what it entails to cultivate a practice of deep listening. This conversation traverses many different realms, but at the heart of it, I feel that Zaneta was sharing a crucial lesson about accessing the presence and reclaiming our vital life force through the simple, but profound act of learning to truly listen. We also discussed Zaneta's multi-dimensional approach to sound and healing modalities, the frustration and joy of liminality, and the corporality of our spiritual lives. Zaneta and I both share conservatory musical trainings, so we share our reflections on what it means to interact with concepts like tradition and having a degree for something so innately human. Finally, we explored how Zaneta's practice of deep listening inform their tarot practice. Here's Zaneta's bio:Zaneta (they/them) is a queer, multi Brooklyn-based sound ritualist, listening educator, nature recordist, creativity activist, tarot reader, and podcast host. Making art is risky, especially when we honor our cycles of creativity. In this episode we sit down with writer Sophie Strand as she shares her experiences with risk, navigating the pressure to create, listening to guidance from our web of non-humxn kin and how our relationships to land shape creative journey. Mentioned in this episode: Psychic Tour of Brooklyn Botanical Garden with Eliza Swann June 22Early Bird List for Creative Liberation Tarot ReadingsSophie's new book, The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred MasculineAbout the GuestSophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. But it would probably be more authentic to call her a neo-troubadour animist with a propensity to spin yarns that inevitably turn into love stories. Give her a salamander and a stone and she'll write you a love story. Sophie was raised by house cats, puff balls, possums, raccoons, and an opinionated, crippled goose. In every neighborhood she's ever lived in she has been known as “the walker”. She believes strongly that all thinking happens interstitially – between beings, ideas, differences, mythical gradients. Her first book of essays The Flowering Wand: Lunar Kings, Lichenized Lovers, Transpecies Magicians, and Rhizomatic Harpists Heal the Masculine is forthcoming in 2022 from Inner Traditions. Her eco-feminist historical fiction reimagining of the gospels The Madonna Secret will also be published by Inner Traditions. Her books of poetry include Love Song to a Blue God (Oread Press) and Those Other Flowers to Come (Dancing Girl Press) and The Approach (The Swan). Her poems and essays have been published by Art PAPERS, The Dark Mountain Project, Poetry.org, Unearthed, Braided Way, Creatrix, Your Impossible Voice, The Doris, Persephone's Daughters, and Entropy. She has recently finished a work of historical fiction, The Madonna Secret, that offers an eco-feminist revision of the gospels. She is currently researching her next epic, a mythopoetic exploration of ecology and queerness in the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde.Follow her on Facebook or on Instagram @cosmogyny.About the HostZaneta (they/them) is a queer, multi Brooklyn-based sound ritualist, listening educator, nature recordist, creativity activist, tarot reader, and podcast host. Amanda Bienko is an artist witch who dreams of dashing across moss-consumed forest floors, cultivating spiritual space within herself, and capturing this magic through art to share with others. Her work focuses on the collaboration of nature and the witch's complex spirit. Her favorite partnership with nature has been with trees and flowers. She transfers the pattern of tree rings and actual dye from flowers onto paper and fabric. For over 15 years Amanda has been creating art, but she decided to start actively selling her work after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. Having this illness changed her perspective about life and made her feel it was time to stand up for her path and share with others the comfort and beauty that she received from art and nature's magic. https://www.amandabienko.com/
My intention with this latest Moon to Moon episode was to open up a conversation about working with the element of Water in your life and in your magical offering to the world. My honored guest for this effort is Cancer Sun zaneta sykes. I've known zaneta about two years now. We are colleagues as witches who both create in order to serve, and we mutually witness and celebrate one another's growth. For reasons that will be apparent when listening here, I knew that zaneta would be my first choice for a contemplation on Water as soon as I dreamed of having one. zaneta sykes is a sound ritualist, listening educator, and tarot reader living in Brooklyn. At the core of their art is a deep desire to remember how to live in interconnectedness. Whether that is humxns connecting to the land or to one another, they believe sound is a powerful medium for building connectivity. The bulk of their artwork is meditations and sound rituals, where they draw upon memory and weave ritual and sound to create community performance experiences that transform the way participants hear and connect to the world. As with the other elemental episodes in this series, I anchor us into the themes for Water in the introductory solo segment. To jump straight to my conversation with zaneta, please jump to around 29 minutes in.
