Literary scholar Leland Ryken describes the meeting between the prophet Nathan and King David as a “confrontation story.” He explains: “Usually the confrontation implies some tension or dissonance that needs to be acknowledged and resolved . . . [C]onfrontation stories imply an element of judgment or accusation.” In today’s reading, King David had abused his power in order to commit adultery and murder (2 Sam. 11). It goes without explanation that this was the opposite of what a godly shepherd-king should be and do. And because David was the king, God’s anointed, his sin was more than personal and had significant consequences. By acting in outright disobedience, David had dishonored the Lord before the entire nation. As Nathan indicated, the essence of David’s wrongdoing was to despise the word of the Lord and to show utter contempt for Him (vv. 9, 14). By obeying the Lord, Nathan was risking his life. It took great courage to confront a king. Nathan’s parable had the purpose of calling forth confession and repentance from the intended audience of one (vv. 1–4). And his plan worked splendidly. David’s passionate condemnation of the rich man’s theft (vv. 5–6) was met with the prophet’s “You are the man!” (vv. 7–9). This story helped break through the king’s hard heart, overthrew his pride, and brought him back to the Lord. There would still be consequences (vv. 10–14), but God met David with grace and forgiveness. We can look at the parables from yesterday and today as an opposing pair. Nathan’s story shows all a shepherd should not be—uncaring, selfish, exploitative, and unjust. Jesus’ parable, on the other hand, portrays all a shepherd should be—loving, faithful, and actively on the side of the weak. >> What is your response when confronted with evidence of your sin? Confession is a vital spiritual discipline.

In this interview with Nathan Hirsch, he explains how he’s taken the hiring process for virtual assistants and created a series of SOPs that can save any business owner time and money. Nathan started his entrepreneurial journey back when he was in college, selling used student textbooks at rates much lower than what the school offered. When the school eventually forced him to stop, he turned to selling products on Amazon. As his online business grew, he quickly realized he needed to find reliable workers to help him out. However, being in college, those were hard to come by. That’s when he went to online hiring. As Nathan describes it, he made a lot of mistakes when he first undertook the hiring process for his virtual assistants. With FreeUp, his first eight-figure business, he created a reliable platform for hiring. The platform vets potential candidates and matches you up with the person who fits your needs. However, the process doesn’t end when you make the hire. As a business owner, it’s then up to you to come up with the SOPs that will make your business run smoothly. That’s where Nathan’s newest business, Outsource School comes in. By providing playbooks and formulas to business owners, he makes the process of systematizing easy so that you can get more time back. Nathan also describes learning to grow without having to rely on ads. Some of his key strategies include, putting out consistent content, going on podcasts, linking to affiliate programs, and setting up joint ventures with other businesses. By taking the trial and error out of the hiring process for virtual assistants, Nathan has been able to help countless business owners scale more effectively. With the right procedures, business growth can be simplified.

2 Sam 12:24-25 ESV 24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the Lord loved him 25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the Lord. JEDIDIAH Both David and Bathsheba were comforted that God gave them another son. They called him Solomon, which means ‘man of peace.' David had been in turmoil and must had a high hope that the future of his son would be the opposite. Solomon will be a catalyst of peace. Amazingly, the Lord loved him. As Nathan knew it from God, he named David and Bathsheba's son, Jedidiah, which means “beloved or darling of Yah.” God had expressed displeasure to David for his double sin of adultery and murder. But apparently, after David's confession, His anger was replaced with mercy. As Psalm 103:8-11: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; No mistake needs be final. Thus, we don't need to be stuck in the past. As our covenant keeping God, He does give us a new start so that we may not be defined by our blunders in the past. Like David, the righteous may fall seven times but he could rise again. [Prov 24:16] Who among us is isn't tossed and hurt by the crisis? As we crossed the 365 dateline we reached 2021. As ship cruising in treacherous 2020 waters , we traversed with our sails are torn perhaps. Nevertheless, God had enabled to usher ourselves to 2021 and began a new journey. But this time, we do have had precious lessons learned, don't we? Like David and Bathsheba, let's forget the past and build up from the ashes. Let's focus unto the future and embrace the challenges ahead. Let's continue our journey having been assured of the unfailing love of God, abounding with hope. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”[Rom 15:13] Our God is the God of the second chances. God anticipates that we fail. But, He doesn't want us to live in failure. We could fail. But, we should not call ourselves failures, should we? We may climb the tallest mountains on earth. But, let's not forget that our feet are made of clay. And this should cause us to be humble always. Our failure needs not be final. For God can create beauty for ashes. As Isaiah encouraged the dispersed Jews, that is, “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”[Isa 61:3]

-2 Sam 12:15-23 esv And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and he became sick. 16 David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” 19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” 20 Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” 22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?' 23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” BROKENNESS. As Nathan had said, David lost his child with Bathsheba. At first, the child got seriously sick. David became broken. For seven days, David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. Though the elders sought him to eat, he did not. How broken was David? When the child died after seven days, the elders were quite hesitant to tell the king for they fear that he may do himself harm. But, David had heard them. Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. He then went to his own house. After a span of almost two years that David had covered his sin, he confessed and came out broken. He worhiped God after he experienced a painful consequence. He expressed this when he wrote Psa 51:14-17, when he said; “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” David's servants did not understand why David ceased to fast when his child was dead. He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?' But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”[v.22,23] David had accepted the will of God. Like him we must fast and worship neither to twist God's arm nor to change His mind. Contrariwise, we should ask Him to break our will to align to His. In other words, we fast and worship because we seek God and Him alone.

Upload is a sweet and whimsical comedy, with profound observations about technology, love, class and the meaning of life.  Amell, who’s made the sci-fi genre his playground with roles on Netflix's Code 8 and the CW series' The Tomorrow People and The Flash was immediately drawn to creator Greg Daniel’s futuristic vision in Upload. Amell shares "When Greg and I talked about the script and the show he said if this digital after-life was created by people then it would have the same problems the real world has with division of wealth and income inequality.” Amell also shares his audition process in landing the role of Nathan, why fans are rooting for Nora and Nathan to be together and why the idea of a virtual afterlife appeals to him.

In 1 Samuel 12 the prophet Nathan confronts King David over his sins of adultery and murder. Up until that point, David was sure that these sins were hidden and behind him. But we have no "secret chambers" and God knows all things. As Nathan confronts the King there are many critical lessons for us to learn. First is that getting what we want in life - economically, vocationally, etc. - can lead us to a place of spiritual lethargy. What we really need isn't worldly things, but Christ. Second, watch how David announces judgment - in God's name! - on the imaginary bad guy even while he's guilty of such horrific sin. This should caution us as to how dangerous pride and self-righteousness are even for the saved. Finally, God is merciful and forgives David's sin when the King repents and admits the obvious at last. Even still, there are grave consequences for these trespasses, which should caution even Christians against playing with fire, so to speak. Yes, the Lord is most merciful, but He's not mocked and there are often earthly consequences for sin as we see in this case. This should compel us to stay close to our disciplines so as to stay safe from temptation.

Repo Mania: Has The Fed Bailed Out Wall Street Again? with Nathan Tankus

If you follow the financial press you’ve probably noticed some recent hysteria about the “repo market.” Since this involves the dealings of the Federal Reserve, it falls under our purview here at Macro ‘n Cheese. Because unraveling the strands of this dense subject requires someone more knowledgeable than we are, we called upon friend-of-the-podcast Nathan Tankus to help us out. Nathan is Research Director at Modern Money Network and can often be found on Twitter, educating the world about MMT. “Repo” simply refers to the repurchase of bonds. Banks and bond traders sell Treasury bonds back to the Federal Reserve with the understanding that they (the banks) will buy them back the following day. As Nathan points out, this is always spoken of from the point of view of the central bank as buyer; it could just as well be called the resale market. Why does this matter? Why do the banks sell back their Treasurys for such a brief period of time? When banks buy them back the price is higher due to the interest charged. So why do it at all? It turns out to be the mechanism by which banks ensure that they have enough balance reserves to ensure that their payments clear. To do this they need to deal with liquid assets, which can quickly be bought and sold and converted to "money" (or at least change the balance in their account). Nothing is more liquid than a Treasury bond. See? Perhaps the banking industry isn’t just lawlessness and anarchy after all? Well, they certainly want us to believe the system is self-regulating so we won’t demand that the lawmakers rein them in and protect the public. As Nathan explains it, concern about the repo market is much ado about nothing. The central bank has been doing these repurchase agreements since 1917 and during some periods they are a normal part of the Fed’s toolbox. But the 2008 financial crisis put a halt to the practice for a while. In response to the liquidity crisis (ie, the lack of liquid assets), the Fed created trillions of dollars of what most of us think of as bail-out money, which was distributed to all the banks. At that point, banks didn’t need to sell bonds to meet their reserve balances because they all had plenty. Thus, no need for repo. When repo agreements started up again, some in the media thought that, since it hadn’t been done since 2008, it must be a sign that there’s a new crisis at hand. It doesn’t help that the FDIC, headed by Trump appointee Jelena McWilliams, is investigating the central bank, insisting that the repo market is actually another bank bailout by the Fed. Somehow, people have forgotten that these have historically been normal activities. In this interview we learn the meaning of the liquidity trap -- and liquidity itself. We learn about settlement balances, quantitative easing, and overnight interest rates. We learn of regulations like Dodd-Frank and international banking agreements like Basel III. We learn how these things are connected to such far-flung historical events as Bretton Woods, the Yom Kippur War, and German postwar reparations. We learn why MMT economists have promoted a detailed understanding of monetary operations and argue that the banking system does not serve the public purpose. The next time you get spooked by a headline in the financial press, tune into this episode again. It all makes so much sense when explained by someone who knows what he’s talking about.  Nathan Tankus is Research Director at Modern Money Network. modernmoneynetwork.org @NathanTankus on Twitter

You know, Many complain that millennials today are lost, buried in their phones and destined to a life of video games in their parents basement.  I think Nathan will demonstrate this is clearly not the case , and that our future is in good hands with young men and women like him.  I hope you enjoy my most recent conversation with Nate Jenkins.

Maybe you can sing, or dance, or you love to organize, or you really love spreadsheets (that’s my husband), or you love to cook. Maybe you’re good at math. Maybe you’re a good writer, or you love to fix things and you just have a knack for it. Maybe you’re artistic. Whatever it is, you have it! One of the things I love to see is when people take that gift that they were given (or passion or hobby), and they say “I’m going to find a way to use this gift to help somebody else.” That is when your gift becomes a gift to someone else! My guest this week is Nathan Thomas, the founder and executive director of All We Are. All We Are blossomed out of a personal initiative of Nathan’s in 2009 after working in the New ABC Divine Boarding School in Kampala, Uganda. He is so passionate about empowering young leaders around the world and working to help people realize their potential. This was a really fun conversation; he actually got to join me live in the studio and I loved, loved, loved my time with Nathan. I know you will, too! AVOCADO TOAST & CHANGING THE WORLD Nathan and I have many things in common, including a love of avocado toast and a passion to change the world. Nathan uses this passion to make a difference in Uganda by empowering communities in a multitude of ways. From computers to clean water to women’s empowerment to a goal to electrify 50 schools by 2025, Nathan and his All We Are team hopes to tackle problems big and small to help the communities he considers family. THE POWER OF MONEY From natural disasters to health and financial crises, there is always a way for people to get involved and make a difference. Sometimes, though, people’s help can actually not be helpful at all. For example, often times after a natural disaster, people donate stuff rather than money because it feels more personal. Nathan and I talk about how giving clothes and other things is great, but not when people don’t have a use for the stuff or don’t have a place to put these things. Sometimes, the best way to help is just to donate your money. THE LEARNING CURVE Whenever you start a business or an organization or whatever it may be, the first few years are so key in learning what works for you and what doesn’t, and Nathan knows this well. These days, Nathan doesn’t ship anything out to Uganda, he buys everything locally. However, this wasn’t the case at the start of All We Are. As Nathan and I talk about the growth of All We Are, you’ll find out why Nathan chooses to skip the shipping. About Nathan Thomas, Founder & Executive Director of All We Are: Nathan is the Founder and Executive Director of All We Are. AWA blossomed out of a personal initiative started in 2009 after working with the New ABC Divine Boarding School in Kampala, Uganda. Nathan graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2015 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and now works as a Resident Engineer for Leoni Wiring Systems in Raleigh, North Carolina. Summer Blockbuster season is ALSO upon us! As Nathan and Brendan continue with their summer flopbuster season, they took a mini-episode break to discuss all of the major upcoming releases during the months of July and August (and a wee smidgen of September). There are a few revelations here like one movie that Nathan is not super excited for (hot take?), Brendan hates X-Men rip-offs and... wait, Keanu Reeves is in two movies within a week that will not even get seen? Yes, that and a whole lot more on this week's pocket-sized episode! Nathan and Brendan also reveal next week's movie, puddin'. Work and money - they run everything, right?  What part of life is really sucking you in, and what is sucking you down?  Maybe it’s not just about work and money.  You know there is more to it than that.  So how do you manage this…and shift this mindset?    Welcome to Season Three on the Mama Says Namaste Podcast.  In this series, we will focus on how to clear the clutter not just from your home, but also your head and your heart to create that space for clarity and connection. Join me and dive in to "The Minimalist To-Do List!”   Our week - full of awesomeness filming for Ashley’s new “90 Day Road Trip” course. Learn more about the upcoming course and some tips for your own family adventure by going to www.MamaSaysNamaste.com/familyadventure   “Never get so busy living that you forget to make a life.”   What part of life is sucking you in, and what part is sucking you down? Anxiety merely draws your attention to an illusion. Life has a lot of moving parts If I were to break life up into different components, it would go something like what follows.  Yet even in separating this out, you will see that life simply is.   In our unschooling world, we don’t split subjects up into math, English and science; we incorporate it all into life skills that blend them together. Think of this concept as we dive in – here are the areas of our lives again that I brought up last week: • Work • Finances • Family • Spiritual/Emotional • Personal Development • Physical • Social • Life Tasks   Work Let’s cut straight to the chase – this is the big kahuna that seems to dictate our lives.  Work sucks all our energy.  I’m talking about what pays the bills and keeps the lights on.  This area of our lives can dominate everything else, especially when it’s lacking.  When work is sucking the life out of you, and when you are struggling to make ends meet, this can become the focus of everything.   Yikes.  We can’t ignore this and only set aside a tiny bit of energy to work – work needs to go beyond paying the bills and give you some pleasure as well.  My father’s business mission statement is to “release dreams into purposeful and profitable work…in 48 Days” – his whole business is around finding work you truly love, and planning your work around the life you want, not the other way around. The best way to predict your future is to create it. Find work you love -this sounds simplistic, but for something that is the fuel to get your basic needs met, don’t let it suck all the life out of you.  You are your own boss regardless of what job you have – take responsibility for this and make sure this aspect of your life isn’t soul-sucking.  If you need help finding – or creating – the work you love, my other role is within 48Days.com, where my father has written books and created valuable resources and coaching around helping people find work they thrive in. This takes up a large portion of people’s lives – even if you are a stay at home parent, this affects you – it affects your spouse who is working, and it affects the dynamics at home. Work is an exchange of energy.  Is that exchange of energy worth what you are getting out of it? This isn’t the exact commercial Nathan was talking about, but conveys the same message, and is perfect as we prepare for the holidays:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ3ePGr8Q7k Which wolf are you feeding?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__cdpyF5nLk   Bracket your time with work so you can manage and control it.  The goals and ideas aren’t going to just stop and wrap themselves up into a tidy bow.  You have to learn to draw the line.  Time block. Manage and communicate what is important to you.  If you need community to lift you up, check out www.48DaysEagles.com Finances Finances are stressful – add in debt and you can feel like your life is ruled by it.  You become a slave to work simply to keep your head above water.  It’s easy to fall into the mindset of every time you see a dollar sign, it becomes a “can I afford it” scenario.   I’ve experienced the fear of finances, feeling like there were expenses everywhere and I couldn’t afford to really enjoy anything.   I know what it’s like to be a slave to work and stress about how we’re going to pay for everything.  We got intentional with our money and we worked to get out of the hole.  The biggest shift, however, came from a simple game that changed my way of thinking. As Nathan got into the world of real estate, his mentors and coaches invited us to play this game with them, and I had a huge paradigm shift.   Cashflow is an intimidating game, especially if you aren’t a realtor.  In the game, you switch from being in the “rat race” to being an investor, and the light bulb went off as I went from “can I afford this” to “is this a worthwhile investment?”  When I shifted my perspective to that of abundance vs. simply what I could afford, I viewed it differently and created a different concept of money being my friend vs. my enemy. Here is Cashflow for adults (http://amzn.to/2zLA6XO), and Cashflow for kids (http://amzn.to/2y2LDQs)   Give from a full cup – be abundant in your life and your mindset Money doesn’t have to be our downfall.  We don’t have to make it an acrimonious relationship.  Money can be a tool to allow you more time, energy, and resources to give back and serve.  My father has an incredible analogy here on giving from a full cup: How to Give From A Full Cup   (https://vimeo.com/152632600)  Get out of debt.  Easier said than done, especially with a growing family.  More mouths to feed (that oh my gosh get hungrier and hungrier as they grow), more and more day-to-day living expenses.  When you don’t have the surplus, it can be very difficult to move to a feeling of abundance in this area.  My friend Derek Olsen has some excellent resources and advice on getting out of debt over at his site How Do I Money.  It is essential to get out of the “can I afford it” mentality and look, instead, at what is a worthwhile investment.  Come to this with a feeling of abundance, and remember that riches go way beyond just your income. Nothing bleeds over into every area as much as finances.  It affects our work and our feeling a slave to it, it affects our relationships, it affects our overall mentality on life.  Finances are the least compartmentalized out of everything because of it’s ability to dictate our psyche for every other aspect of our lives.  Let’s switch the perspective on it and get on top of it.  Let’s switch to abundant thinking and living, and be stewards of our finances in a way that allows us to do more, be more, and give so, so much more to others – beyond the finances to the time and energy it affords us as well.
