Partholón, known for their ability to seamlessly blend lingering melodies with crushing riffs, has been a driving force in the Post-Metal/Sludge scene since their inception. Hailing from Cork, Daniel Howard (Vocals/Guitars) & Alan Setter (Drums/Backing Vocals) have seen numerous changes to their band, musician wise yet their collective musical prowess has earned them acclaim for pushing the boundaries of the genre while maintaining a distinct identity and sound. Their debut release “Follow Me Through Body” (2016) laid down a foundation of extremely heavy music with a heightened emotional charge. A split 7″ release with Soothsayer (IRL) followed titled: “All We Are.” In summer 2024, Partholón released “The Ocean Pours In”. It is a cathartic journey of life imitating art. From the Mary Russell seafaring tragedy to the death of an ancient tradition, five songs, spanning 37 mins, explore the hearts and minds of those that have come and gone. Married with the legend of Partholón, the tracks explore local history, mythology, tragedy and truth. I met up with Daniel, Alan & Kirk Kelly (album photographer) over two days to talk about the creation of the album and to record the stories behind it. Ever wondered how the beats of Jimi Hendrix's guitar or Bob Marley's reggae rhythms could intertwine with the profound musings of philosophy? Join us as we sit down with Joel Bouchard, a true Renaissance man— musician, philosopher, author, and more—who unveils the symphony of life lessons harmonized with the wisdom imparted by his parents. He paints a vivid picture of a childhood steeped in the importance of individuality, the influence of mentors, and the insatiable thirst for lifelong learning.Strap in for an exploratory journey where Joel takes us from the stages of musical legends to the classrooms where critical thinking and logic should reign supreme. He passionately advocates for children's education that goes beyond the traditional, integrating philosophy to combat the polarizing effects of our digital age. It's a compelling case for why understanding our core philosophies is more crucial than ever, especially when navigating the cacophony of social media and technology. As we round out our conversation, Joel opens the doors to his creative workshop, giving us a sneak peek at his first fantasy novel and the personal values that drive his storytelling. He challenges conventional notions of success, opting instead for a life aligned with joy and fulfillment. His podcast "From Nowhere to Nothing" and latest album "All We Are" are not just works of art but invitations to engage in philosophical reflection, encouraging us to forge paths reflective of our most authentic selves. As broadcast with plenty of our best la's in tow (and apologies to Everton supporters for the image, we just liked the street art, no bias intended). Tonight on our weekly Round Trip we head for Liverpool while trying unsuccessfully to avoid The Beatles Museum, but we did keep it mostly more contemporary and indie for the grand majority. Obviously, a city with a very unique flavor all its own, we had some definite highlights from the dearly departed Her's duo, along with other quality entries from The Wombats, Bill Ryder-Jones, and All We Are amongst other worthies past & present. This is Liverpool, or at least what we could fit into two hours of radio. #feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Her's – What Once Waspizzagirl – seabirdsThe Shipbuilders – Feeling In My PocketShe Drew The Gun – Something For The PainThe Dead 60's – Riot RadioTramp Attack – Oh! Run the Jewels, also known by the initialism RTJ, is an American hip hop super-duo composed of Brooklyn-based rapper and producer El-P, and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike. Atop hard-hitting beats and ominous production, the pair trade aggressive and often wryly comical rhymes, touching upon social issues, life and death, and a heavy dose of chest-thumping bragging.

In the early 2000’s, Melbourne’s RED CIRCLE seemed poised to bring anthemic and epic rock back from the shadows in which it had been lurking. Riding the wave out of Nu-Metal, in an era when discovering new music via Myspace was becoming a thing, bands such as Marvelous 3, Waltham and American Hi-Fi were bringing back the guitar solo, anthemic choruses and a touch of that 80’s hard rock attitude. Locally, Motor Ace were delivering monster riffs, Jet were just about to take off and Electric Mary were just kicking off. In the midst of this was RED CIRCLE.I catch up with lead vocalist and guitarist Zakk Zedras to get the lowdown on the upcoming digital release for their album All We Are, as well as dive into the history of the band and what might be on the horizon in 2020 / 2021.

The Metal Cell Studio was delighted to spend an entertaining few hours in the company of Howard, the hugely talented and accomplished vocalist & guitarist from Partholón. Howard has been involved in playing music in Cork with various bands for over 22 years, which allows him to share his perspective with me on the current status of the metal scene. He explains the responsibility he places upon himself as an musician and an artist, his hopes, frustrations and ambitions which drive him to complete the Partholón album for a future release late this year. It was a great interview and plenty of laughter ensued as well. Shout outs to: Magnus and Cult of Luna, Ten Ton Slug, Zealot Cult, Zhora, God Alone, Archaós, Pavol from Soothsayer, Last Light Recording Studio's, Seanie from Unyielding Love, Red Sun Alert, One Hundred Year Old Man, Na Cruithne, Coroza, Damage Grows, Mark from Paranoid Beast, Pyre Promotions, The Magnapinna and Stu. Songs featured: All We Are & The Hunt (c) Partholón, 2019 all rights reserved.
I believe in my heart of hearts that everyone, yes, everyone, is born with a gift. Now, I don’t know what your gift may be, but you, listening right now, you have a gift that was given to you at birth. Maybe you can sing, or dance, or you love to organize, or you really love spreadsheets (that’s my husband), or you love to cook. Maybe you’re good at math. Maybe you’re a good writer, or you love to fix things and you just have a knack for it. Maybe you’re artistic. Whatever it is, you have it! One of the things I love to see is when people take that gift that they were given (or passion or hobby), and they say “I’m going to find a way to use this gift to help somebody else.” That is when your gift becomes a gift to someone else! My guest this week is Nathan Thomas, the founder and executive director of All We Are. All We Are blossomed out of a personal initiative of Nathan’s in 2009 after working in the New ABC Divine Boarding School in Kampala, Uganda. He is so passionate about empowering young leaders around the world and working to help people realize their potential. This was a really fun conversation; he actually got to join me live in the studio and I loved, loved, loved my time with Nathan. I know you will, too! AVOCADO TOAST & CHANGING THE WORLD Nathan and I have many things in common, including a love of avocado toast and a passion to change the world. Nathan uses this passion to make a difference in Uganda by empowering communities in a multitude of ways. From computers to clean water to women’s empowerment to a goal to electrify 50 schools by 2025, Nathan and his All We Are team hopes to tackle problems big and small to help the communities he considers family. THE POWER OF MONEY From natural disasters to health and financial crises, there is always a way for people to get involved and make a difference. Sometimes, though, people’s help can actually not be helpful at all. For example, often times after a natural disaster, people donate stuff rather than money because it feels more personal. Nathan and I talk about how giving clothes and other things is great, but not when people don’t have a use for the stuff or don’t have a place to put these things. Sometimes, the best way to help is just to donate your money. THE LEARNING CURVE Whenever you start a business or an organization or whatever it may be, the first few years are so key in learning what works for you and what doesn’t, and Nathan knows this well. These days, Nathan doesn’t ship anything out to Uganda, he buys everything locally. However, this wasn’t the case at the start of All We Are. As Nathan and I talk about the growth of All We Are, you’ll find out why Nathan chooses to skip the shipping. About Nathan Thomas, Founder & Executive Director of All We Are: Nathan is the Founder and Executive Director of All We Are. AWA blossomed out of a personal initiative started in 2009 after working with the New ABC Divine Boarding School in Kampala, Uganda. Nathan graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2015 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and now works as a Resident Engineer for Leoni Wiring Systems in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nathan is passionate about empowering young leaders and works to help people realize their potential. Nathan has served as President of the Rotary Club of Raleigh Midtown as well as Strategic Advisor for the 91Four project.
