Taylor Spike is an Ultrarunner who has completed over ten 50 mile ultramarathons and he's raced in ultramarthons that are 100 miles and even 200+ miles long! Taylor wrestled with substance abuse from the time he was a teenager into his adulthood. Taylor has a history of struggling with obsessive tendencies with alcohol and prescribed pain medication. I have met people who have been prescribed medication for an injury and some will eventually develop an attachment to taking the medication and will seek to take it recreationally. In my anecdotal experience, this is a minority, however I find it fascinating like I find the difference between recreational drug users and addicts. I was raised in a family where my siblings and parents struggled with substance abuse. I would blame the substances and I would fear myself; I was deeply afraid of falling in love with a feeling or material thing so much that I would hurt myself for it. Ironically, I would do that with relationships, food, etc.. It seemed a fundamental problem to being a person, at least for me, and for some other people I have met in life. Taylor has a history of Ultrarunning, completing these very tough experiences and he has pulled himself from the depths of his cycle of addiction. Taylor talks about his challenges with Ultrarunning in ways that are reminiscent of his proclivity to use alcohol excessively, however, the result in running is more fitness, greater reward for tackling large challenges, delayed gratification, community, character insights for everyday life, non-standard states of consciousness, etc.. When you make mistakes in your training as an ultrarunner you still have the same internal problems as you carried with you in your other habits, but the structure of training makes those internal problems the main focus. If you make mistakes in this environment, the damages are not as costly. I relate with Taylor Spike in that I love intense experiences. That feeling, without a constructive outlet, wreaks havoc on my life. Within the right context, my proclivities are helpful and give me a sense of meaning and confidence. As Taylor would put it, “Smile, life's worth it!”

In this episode of Big Tech, co-hosts David Skok and Taylor Owen discuss how our understanding of the impacts big tech has on society has shifted over the past year. Among these changes is the public’s greater awareness of the need for regulation in this sector. In their conversation, David and Taylor reflect upon some of the major events that have contributed to this shift. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for better mechanisms to stop the spread of misinformation. And it has shown that social media platforms are capable of quickly implementing some measures to curb the spread of misinformation. However, the Facebook Oversight Board, which their guest Kate Klonick talked about in season 1, is not yet operational, and won’t be until after the US presidential election; even then, its powers will be limited to appeals rather than content oversight. In July 2020, the big tech CEOs testified in an antitrust hearing before the US Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law. “That moment,” Taylor Owen says, “represented a real turning point in the governance agenda.” This growing big tech antitrust movement is showing that law makers, now better prepared and understanding the issues more clearly, are catching up to big tech. The public is starting to recognize the harms alongside the benefits of these companies’ unfettered growth. In season 2, Matt Stoller spoke with David and Taylor about monopoly power, and how these modern giants are starting to look like the railroad barons of old. From diverse perspectives, all the podcast’s guests have made the point that technology is a net good for society but that the positives do not outweigh the negatives — appreciating the many benefits that platforms and technology bring to our lives does not mean we can give them free rein. As Taylor explains, “When we found out the petrochemical industry was also polluting our environment, we didn’t just ban the petrochemical industry and ignore all the different potential positives that came out of it. We just said you can’t pollute any more.” With the technology sector embedded in all aspects of our democracies, economies and societies, it’s clear we can no longer ignore the need for regulation.

Love Your Work

As the nineteenth century was turning to the twentieth century, Frederick Taylor grabbed a stopwatch. He stood next to a worker, and instructed that worker on exactly how to pick up a chunk of iron. Over and over, Taylor tweaked the prescribed movements. Grip the chunk of iron in this way, turn in this way, bend in this way. Once Taylor found the optimal combination of movements, he taught the process to other workers. Their productivity skyrocketed. “Taylorism,” as it came to be called, brought us leaps and bounds forward in productivity. Today, the remnants of Taylorism are ruining productivity. After Taylor’s intervention, the workers who were moving only twelve tons of iron a day were now moving forty-eight tons of iron a day. They quadrupled their productivity. Only a few decades before Taylorism, most people’s concept of time was more closely linked to the movement of the sun than it was to the stopwatch hand. The availability of daylight, the height of a stalk of corn, or the day of first frost that signaled the coming of winter, ruled the work of farmhands. Many of Taylor’s workers objected to having their movement so closely watched and timed, down to the second. Actually, more accurately than that -- Taylor’s stopwatch timed according to the hundredth-of-a-minute. But, “scientific management”, as it was called, swept through the industrial world. Companies couldn’t stay in business without adopting it. The goal of Taylorism was to produce the most work possible in the minimum amount of time. As Taylor watched the movements of the workers, he was trying to reduce waste. He wanted each motion to be as quick and efficient as possible. He wanted each hundredth of a minute to bring the job closer to being done. But, Taylor discovered there was a limit. Logically, there’s no point in a worker sitting idle. Logically, if the worker keeps moving iron, he’ll move more iron than the worker who stops for a smoke break. Intuitively, if you want to get the highest output possible out of the minimum amount of time, take your efficient movements, and fill all of the time with those movements. But, Taylor discovered, it didn’t work that way. The point of diminishing returns There’s a concept in economics called the point of diminishing returns. We can see the point of diminishing returns in action if we imagine Frederick Taylor filling the yard of Bethlehem Steel with workers. Imagine Frederick Taylor has one worker moving iron in the yard of Bethlehem Steel. Thanks to following Taylor’s prescribed movements, that worker is moving forty-eight tons of iron a day. Then, Taylor adds another worker. Now, the workers are moving ninety-six tons of iron a day. Taylor can keep adding workers, and the productivity in the yard will keep going up by forty-eight tons for each worker Taylor adds. Until... Until they start to run out of space. There’s just not as much room in the yard for the workers to pick up the iron, and move it from one place to another. They get in each other’s way, they run into each other, or one worker will have to wait for another worker to finish his job before that first worker can finish his job. At first, it’s not a huge problem. Taylor has merely reached the point of diminishing returns. The point of diminishing returns is the point at which each additional production unit -- in this case, the production unit is workers -- each worker doesn’t return as much benefit as the previous production units did. The return is diminishing. At some point, Taylor adds a worker, and doesn’t get an additional forty-eight tons of production. He gets only forty. Like I say, it’s not a huge deal. They’re still moving more iron than they were before they added that worker. Their margins are high enough on the labor costs that they’re still making more profit. Now, let’s apply this concept to a single worker. Only now the production unit isn’t the workers themselves. The production unit is time. As Taylor filled the available time with motion, the output of a worker rose. But at some point, Taylor hit the point of diminishing returns. As he filled the available time with efficient, optimized motion, at some point, the additional time filled didn’t bring the returns that the previous units of time did. Maybe he tried instructing the worker to move three chunks of iron in ten minutes, then had no problem adding a fourth chunk of iron within that ten minutes. He could string together these ten-minute units, one after another. He could fill up a day with those units, and get the output he expected. But then, at some point, moving an additional chunk of iron in that same unit of time didn’t bring Taylor the returns he expected. In this case, let’s say that number was five chunks of iron within ten minutes. Maybe the worker could keep it up for an hour, but soon the worker would get tired. Eventually, the worker couldn’t move that fifth chunk of iron within a ten-minute unit. The worker got too fatigued. Taylor had reached the point of diminishing returns. The point of negative returns Let’s go back to the steelyard, where Taylor is adding workers. At some point after the point of diminishing returns, Taylor isn’t getting forty-eight tons of output per additional worker, nor is he getting forty tons of output per additional worker. At one point, workers were waiting for one another or getting in each other’s way once in awhile. But now the yard of Bethlehem Steel is nearly gridlocked. The workers are constantly in each other’s way. They’re getting fatigued holding the chunks of iron. Injuries are skyrocketing. Productivity in the steel yard collapses. Taylor is way beyond the point of diminishing returns. Not only is he not getting the output he expected from adding an additional worker. That would be the point of diminishing returns. Taylor has now hit the point of negative returns. He’s now getting less output overall per additional worker. For each worker Taylor adds, he’ll get less output than he would have if that worker had just stayed home. Creative work is not industrial work Scientific management is simple enough when you’re moving chunks of iron. Simply experiment with the amount of iron moved in a given amount of time. Eventually, you’ll find the right formula. But creative work is different in a number of ways. There are three ways: One: Some ideas are more valuable than others. Two: It doesn’t take time to have an idea. Three: In creativity, actions don’t link to results. Some ideas are more valuable than others First, some ideas are more valuable than others. Imagine you write two 50,000-word novels, in parallel. Let’s say you work equally as hard on the first novel as you do on the second novel. You spend just as much time typing the first novel as the second. The first novel sells zero copies. The second one sells a million copies. They’re both free of misspellings. They’re both quality writing. Why does one sell a million copies, while the other sells zero? If the performance of the traditional publishing industry tells us anything, it’s that nobody has any idea why one novel falls flat and the other takes off. But, you can know this: Not all ideas have equal market value. In fact, the difference in market value, for the same amount of work, can be infinite. So, words typed, while a worthy unit of output to track if you’re trying to convince yourself you’re a writer, is not the only thing to optimize for. The quality of ideas matters. Ideas don’t take time The second thing that makes creative work different from moving chunks of iron is that moving chunks of iron takes time. Yes, all of the things leading up to having an idea take time -- we’ll talk about that next. But the act of having the idea takes no time at all. Neuroscientists can look at people’s brains and give them a creative problem. The people can go from being nowhere near solving the problem, to solving the problem, in an instant. Again, sitting yourself down and forcing yourself to come up with ideas is a worthy exercise. It will increase the output of ideas you have, it will build your skill in your craft, and it will increase the chances that one of those ideas is a hit. But you may be just as likely to have that idea while not working at all. Remember Helmholtz’s speech from episode 218, about the Four Stages of creativity? He said his ideas didn’t tend to come to him “at the writing table.” The moment of having an idea takes no time at all. Technically, you could have nearly unlimited ideas in a given “production unit” of time. Actions aren’t linked to immediate results in creative work Now, the third thing that makes creative work different from moving chunks of iron is that, in creative work, actions don’t link to results. By that I mean that if you grip a chunk of iron and pick it up off the ground, you have done work. You have moved that chunk of iron a little closer to its destination. Creative work doesn’t work that way. Say you have an idea for that novel that sells a million copies. Where did it come from? Think about Paul McCartney’s song, “Yesterday.” McCartney famously heard the melody for “Yesterday” in a dream. At first, he was convinced it was a melody he had heard before. He thought it was an old Jazz tune his father had played when he was a kid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCV9oqtwyVA “Yesterday” has stood the test of time as an original song. But musicologists have found numerous similarities to other songs. One such song is called “Answer Me, My Love.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhr94uOdElU “Yesterday”’s lyrics are as such: Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, Now it looks as though they’re here to stay, “Answer Me, My Love”’s lyrics are as such: She was mine yesterday, I believed that love was here to stay. McCartney didn’t steal from “Answer Me, My Love.” But it’s almost certain that he heard the song before. In 1953, when McCartney was eleven years old, a version of “Answer Me, My Love,” by David Whitfield was the number one song on the UK charts. Then, it got knocked from the number-one spot -- by another version of “Answer Me, My Love,” this time, by Frankie Lane. It was the first time in UK pop chart history that a song was replaced by another version of itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00uPMWDEeZE Was McCartney inspired by this song? It’s impossible to know for sure, but it’s certainly plausible. So this idea you have for a novel that sells a million copies. Maybe you’re in the right state of mind to have this idea because you took a vacation last month. Maybe you’re more relaxed because you got a massage two days ago. Maybe you’re thinking more clearly because you went on a hike earlier that day. Yet it was the funny red hat worn by the woman who walked by the cafe that sparked the idea. Meanwhile, it could have been inspired by some book, buried deep in your unconscious, that your mom read to you when you were three. We’re done with time management Taylorism was the birth of “time management.” It was when we started to look at time as a “production unit.” When we look at time as a production unit, we assume that each additional unit of time we spend doing something will get us the same gain in output as the previous unit of time. But it doesn’t work that way. Even in work as simple as moving chunks of iron, Taylor learned that human energy doesn’t neatly pack together to fill all available time. We have our limits. Today, we’re still treating time as a production unit. Our calendars are filled up with boxes, sometimes overlapping. Jason Fried calls it “calendar Tetris.” We live according to that calendar. “There’s only twenty-four hours in a day,” you’ll hear people say. The conclusion we’re supposed to draw from that is that time is precious, so you better fill it all up. Filling up that time was a big leap forward, but now we need to draw a different conclusion. If there’s only twenty-four hours in a day, that tells you there’s a limit. That tells you that eventually, “time management” is squeezing blood from a stone. When it comes to creative work, that stone is a very fragile stone, indeed. He is the founder of Focusmate, the app that helps you focus and in return be more productive. In this episode, we discuss with Taylor what in his personal life lead him to the idea of needing a solution like Focusmate, as well as his personal take on a lot of procrastination issues. As Taylor developed Focusmate, he found three major aspects of being more productive. One, you perform better when you need to complete a task in the presence of someone else. Two, if you commit to another person that you are going to do something, it is highly likely that you will complete it. And three, you are likely to increase productivity if you reflect on your work afterward. You know that you are going to have to review the job that you did, so in the moment of work, your actual focus becomes stronger. Focusmate is now helping thousands of people with all of these aspects! Tune in to hear more about Taylor and his company, Focusmate! As Taylor would put it, prison could be a one time stop for some, the ultimate destination of life for others or like a revolving door to some with an in and out movement like it was for Caleb Twidwell at some point in his life. In this interview Taylor gets Caleb to tell his story that took a wrong turn at the age of 14. This took away social life from him for quite some good part of his life. His family that was kind of dysfunctional by then could not give him the moral support he really needed at that time. It almost looked like the sky was caving down on him. It’s amazing how he manages to look past all this and still see life with a lot of positivity. His type of change that he promised the judge when he was last before the courts is a story that surely will go a long way to inspire many. Remember to visit us at www.lifeofalifer.com

It all began with David Martin, or as most call him “Super Dave”, and a passion for discovering the truth. Rex Lail of Rex Allen Theatre Presents has had countless Bigfoot encounters and sightings in particular areas of the western woods of North Carolina for years. Rex himself ventured out with their own small group to hunt and research this mysterious Bigfoot. That is where David Martin and Toby Bolick came in. As the group gathered evidence and hunted through the years, the group changed faces constantly until it was down to only Rex, David, and Toby. David took the helm as team leader and assembled his own hunt team to continue the hunt and dream of coming face to face with this massive being some day. David assembled himself, Toby, Derrick, and a young skeptic fresh out of high school in Taylor Cook. The group took to the woods and continued the hunt as a group called “The NC Squatch Watchers” that was featured as a television show on a local North Carolina station called channel 14 WHKY as part of a Friday segment of Rex Allen Theatre Presents airing at 8:00 PM Eastern. The brave four faced many encounters with a group of Bigfoot in Rex Lail’s endless woods and gathered some concrete evidence through the years to prove the existence. As time passed, Derrick had to withdraw from the group to pursue his role as youth pastor of his church.  Taylor decided to bring in his lifelong best friend of the same age Tate Fulbright, also another skeptic at the time. The four took to the woods again to hunt and faced more encounters/evidence. As Taylor and Tate became near the believers in Bigfoot as David and Toby were, the group decided to go forward and branch out to social media platforms to reach as many viewers and people as possible with their hunts and stories. Within the full year of 2017, the group’s Instagram page reached over 10,000 followers and YouTube channel reached over 11,000 subscribers.

You work hard to build a following on social media (and these days, it feels harder than ever to do so), but to what end? What can you do with that social media “influence?” Well, there’s a way to provide a service to your audience and to monetize your social presence with an easy-to-use app that not a lot of people fully understand. After today’s episode, you’ll have a Ph.D. in how to use rewardStyle. On today’s show with Natalie and Darla is Taylor Walker Sitting, a certified personal trainer, nutrition expert, and social media master. She has an enormous following on Twitter and Instagram, and she’s taken the role of social media influencer to the next level, working with huge brands. As she says, her goal is to empower women to be their best selves in the most real way possible. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [03:10] What is the rewardStyle LiketoKnowIt app and why does everyone want a piece? [7:14] How to make rewardStyle work for you [10:04] If you don’t take your role seriously, you can really damage your brand as an influencer. [14:40] What is a micro-influencer and how influential are they? [15:30] How to set up a posting schedule that reaches your audience [18:44] How to use rewardStyle with your blog [21:45] What mistakes has Taylor made on her journey to becoming an influencer? [26:19] What up wingnut? [28:21] Darla and Natalie’s takeaways Connect with Taylor Walker Sinning Taylor Walker Sinning Taylor Walker Fit on Twitter Taylor Walker Fit on Instagram Taylor Walker Fit on Facebook Resources & People Mentioned rewardStyle Liketoknowit Taylor’s media kit What is rewardStyle and how do you use it? As Taylor told Darla and Natalie on this episode, rewardStyle has a “Liketoknowit” app that allows people on social media to share products, and then when their followers buy those products, you get paid. It’s a really easy-to-use app, though you do have to apply. And as Taylor says, she didn’t get in on her first try, so it’s worth applying more than once. Now rewardStyle started off as focused on fashion, but if you’re sharing home products or anything that relates to your business, you can use it, too. Use rewardStyle, and be smart about what you’re recommending One of the most important bits of advice Taylor shared is that just because she can work with a brand, doesn’t mean she will. She needs to ensure the product she’s endorsing is solid, and that it’s right for her audience. It’s easy to think “Oh, I’ll take the money for that endorsement,” but in the long run, you’re going to shortchange yourself. One way to ensure you’re making the right choices when it comes to what brands you work with is to have a strong media kit. Taylor goes into what comprises a great media kit, and shares hers as well (linked above!). How do we forgive others for the harm they've done to us? What about those terrible actions that are truly unforgivable? How do we let go of those, or at least learn to carry them differently? I was honored to chat last week with my friend and fellow transformation coach Taylor Tagg, who is also a forgiveness expert. Taylor gives us concrete actions we can take to forgive others, so we can find the peace we're looking for.   Taylor offers workshops in Memphis and speaks widely. You can see more of his work at www.forgiveandfindpeace.com I encourage you all to visit his website, order his books, and forgive others. As Taylor wisely says, "life gets better when you let go of the bitter." The Ted talk by Sarah Montana which Taylor mentions can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEK2pIiZ2I0 As we get close to Yom Kippur, I encourage us all to find ways to let go of the old wounds that no longer serve us, and to write new endings to the stories of hurt we've carried for too long. May we all be blessed to forgive others, to be forgiven, and to find peace.   Thanks for listening to the Torah of Life podcast, your home for transformational wisdom from a Jewish lens. Overcoming Addiction with Yoga & Taylor Hunt

Three percent. That’s your chance of recovery, once you’ve stuck a needle in your arm. Where does this story start? Taylor Hunt had a rocky start - alcohol & drugs - to the point that he thought his life was over. But during a short period in detox and a moment of clarity, the choice came to him that he wanted to live. His journey through recovery was not easy. On the 11th step of AA, yoga found him and pulled him in. He had a lot of resistance to his first class, and it brought up a lot, but his sponsor directed him back. As Taylor found his way deeper into yoga, he found that the effort and community held keys to transformation. For someone coming out of addiction where you have no easy path forward, yoga is very encouraging. You can see the progress in front of you with a little bit of dedicated practice. And this is important: to develop the wisdom that small steps lead to change is essential... and transformative to realize you can take other such steps in your life to turn things around, even if the change isn’t always immediately apparent. Yoga has a way of clearing the body -- when your body doesn’t process old experiences, it stores them, like chemicals in your cells. As you heat the body, these are released, and you have to deal with them.  In a supportive environment such as yoga, it helps with recovery. How did this lead to Astanga Yoga Columbus and the Trini Foundation? Taylor opened the Astanga Yoga Columbus studio in 2014 and deliberately built a community which is supportive and an atmosphere that encourages this hard work. Mysore style Astanga Yoga varies from other forms, where it provides students with their own practice, bit by bit. You come in and practice your own routine, as opposed to following in a group. You learn new poses only as you’re ready. Mysore, India But Taylor knew what he had learned could help others struggling with addiction. So he, along with his wife Jess, and teacher Dawn Blevins started the Trini Foundation. The foundation provides training so that yoga teachers can go into recovery facilities to teach yoga for recovering addicts. When people leave their programs, it provides scholarships to Astanga yoga in exchange for their commitment to show up, in order to help support the transition. Through this, they are reaching out and changing lives. As a side note, I came to Taylor’s studio many years ago and can attest to the energy in the room that pulls you forward. My own practice has been in hibernation as I’ve focused on developing other habits -- but what I learned from Taylor is that it’s meant to be a daily practice, and need at least three days a week to work properly.  I set out at the beginning of this year to develop my own understanding of how to make a social impact and set a goal for this podcast to record 25 episodes. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it, but it was really a miracle at the last minute that Taylor was able to connect with me to make this happen. How do you get involved? If you’re in Columbus and struggling with addiction, have a look at Trina foundation. If you’re a yoga teacher, interested in making an impact, take a look. If you’re looking for a cause to donate that can give people the tools they need to radically transform their lives check it out. But I’d also encourage you to try out yoga. It works. This week, Eliot and Jodi discuss Taylor’s car shopping experience, implicit bias, and the benefits of curiosity. Why is that important for business? As Taylor’s story illustrates, ignoring a decision maker is an excellent way to lose a sale. Who we choose to ignore often relates to our implicit biases, about who is important and who is not. (Check out this episode of the NPR podcast, Hidden Brain, for more on implicit bias). The hardest part of addressing your biases is that you cannot actually self-diagnose. They feel like rational conclusions, not biases, and are hard to see, let along overcome. Nobody wants to see themselves as the person who makes these judgements, yet they continue to happen, and they cost us more than just sales. So how do we deal with these biases if we don’t even know they are there? The best first step is to start all interactions by being curious and seeking to understand. And the better you know something, the more curious you need to be; you have to counter-steer your own knowledge. Bias often feels like knowledge; be curious instead. It can also help to seek outside observers who can see issues with a fresh set of eyes. Asking for feedback from different areas within your business – suppliers, workers, and customers – can help leaders see their blind spots. Make an effort to do outreach and get feedback about work you didn’t get – what went wrong? And when someone asks a question, direct the answer to the person that asked. And most importantly, be curious about your own biases. You can’t resolve a problem if you adamantly refuse to acknowledge that you have one.   What story do you want to tell? Our January meetup was billed as a debate between Taylor Chadwick of What It Is against Andrea Beça of That's So Maven on how long a podcast should be. "Debate" turned out to be a bit of a strong term. As Taylor says at one point, "it sounds like we're just going to agree the whole time." I accept responsibility. Everyone's just so nice. They do come from different points of view on what works for the length of their own shows. The sweet spot for What It Is — an arts interview show that Taylor does with Chris Cook and Brian Bergum — is 70 minutes. That's So Maven — a show for, by and about female entrepreneurs that Andrea does with Lauren Dary — is about half an hour. Both have sound reasons for that, which you'll hear in the podcast, along with the following points: How your content and format dictate length; How the growth of podcasting has made shorter shows more common; Audience feedback on length and what to do with it; Batch recording vs time-sensitive recording; Preparation vs editing for controlling length. You'll also hear questions and comments from Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs, Brandon Schatz of Yegs and Bacon and Doctor Whooch, Nick McQuik of The Quik and Slow Comedy Show, and Chris Chang-Yen Phillips of Let's Find Out. Incidentally, I usually like to keep my podcast to less than half an hour, but this one was so full of good stuff that it's pushing 50 minutes. I guess you win this round,Taylor.  This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher.
