Host: Isaretta Riley, MD, MPH Guest: Nicola A. Hanania, MD, MS, FCCP Guest: Jay Peters, MD A recent study assessing the impact of implicit bias on uncontrolled asthma treatment found that a patient's identity and socioeconomic status can unintentionally influence a physician's decision-making, impacting the quality of care. Additionally, a critical gap exists in clinician awareness and implementation of health equity practices, which play a key role in mitigating these unintended consequences. That's why Drs. Isaretta Riley, Nicola Hanania, and Jay Peters come together to explore the latest research on unconscious bias in asthma treatment and provide recommendations for more equitable care. Dr. Riley is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina; Dr. Hanania is a Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and the Director of Airways Clinical Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas; and Dr. Peters is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Texas, San Antonio. President Biden, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and health advocates, took a strong stand at the White House, pushing for reduced asthma inhaler prices. In this stride toward affordable healthcare, major pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, and GlaxoSmithKline recently pledged to cap inhaler costs at $35 a month. The move ensures competition, thereby lowering healthcare costs for millions. The spotlight on patents blocking cheaper, generic alternatives brought to light the administration's crackdown on such practices. The FTC's challenge against over 100 patents underscores Biden's push against pharmaceutical giants profiting at the expense of patients. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America praised the initiative, underscoring the need for broader actions to ensure affordable access to asthma treatments. But challenges remain for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, highlighting the ongoing battle for equitable healthcare pricing. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Host: Demondes Haynes, MD Guest: Njira Lugogo, MD Guest: Neil Skolnik, MD According to data from the CDC, over half of patients in the United States are not considered well controlled, and there hasn't been much improvement in exacerbations as measured by ER visits or by deaths per year in the last 30 years or so. But fortunately, the use of single maintenance and reliever therapy (SMART) has been shown to help address inflammation and decrease exacerbations. Drs. Demondes Haynes, Njira Lugogo, and Neil Skolnik discuss this approach and other combination treatment for asthma. This non-CME education is brought to you by CHEST and is sponsored by AstraZeneca.

It's suspected that 30 per cent of 5.4 million patients currently diagnosed with asthma in the UK have been misdiagnosed. The NHS spends £1.1 billion on asthma treatment and management annually, with 90 per cent of this cost going directly on medication, including the prescription of steroid inhalers. In this episode, we hear about a programme to improve the diagnosis and management of asthma within primary care, involving the spread of a breathing test called FeNO. This test looks at how much nitric oxide – a type of gas – is in your breath when you breath out and can show the level of inflammation in the lungs. The test is easy to do, you simply breath into a tube - and it takes less than a minute. FeNO testing is a key piece in the diagnostic jigsaw and can help improve care for people with asthma. Host Dr Phil Jennings talks to severe asthma sufferer Emma Thompson and Carol Stonham, a Senior Nurse Practitioner and the Executive Chair of the Primary Care Respiratory Society. Carol is a member of the national FeNO programme, one of the Rapid Uptake Product programmes, run by the NHS England Accelerated Access Collaborative with the support of the AHSN Network. Find out more about the Rapid Uptake Products (RUP) programme, designed to support stronger adoption and spread of proven innovations. Professionals can access a wide range of support tools for implementing FeNO testing, on the Wessex AHSN website.
On this week's episode of The Red Light Report, I had the honor of sitting down with someone that is considered the top breath expert in the world, Patrick McKeown. During our conversation, Patrick filled me in on the many amazing -- and, sadly, forgotten -- benefits of nasal breathing, how to properly breath, the negative impacts of mouth breathing, why carbon dioxide is actually beneficial and necessary to our physiology and so much more! Patrick McKeown was a chronic asthmatic for most of his life. When he applied the buteyko breathing method, he freed himself from his asthma condition. As a qualified Buteyko practitioner, he is now just one of a few Western experts accredited and authorised by Prof Konstantin Buteyko to teach this method. His three clinics – Asthma Care – are in Dublin, Galway, and Cork. International best-selling author of The Oxygen Advantage and creator and master instructor of the Oxygen Advantage technique, Patrick McKeown is widely regarded as one of the world's leading breathing re-education experts. Whether you're a weekend warrior or an Olympic athlete, Patrick's methods provide a fast, simple, scientific and certain way to revolutionize your sports performance and improve your daily wellbeing and health. Over the past two decades, Patrick has trained thousands of people around the world to safely challenge their bodies and produce positive changes through breathing re-education. He teaches a new way to breathe, combined with specific exercises designed to improve blood chemistry. The result is an increase of oxygen flow to all the body's systems, meaning greater endurance, strength and power. Patrick has also released two books this year: Atomic Focus and The Breathing Cure. - Dr. Mike Belkowski & Patrick discuss the following: His history with breathing and how he became an expert in the area How breathing techniques helped his asthma Nasal breathing, its history, & its impact on your health How lung capacity is an indicator of life expectancy Mouth breathing and its negative health ramifications The impact of breathing patterns on sleep and mental health How mouth breathing is synonymous with emergency and fight or flight How mouth breathing leads to brain developmental issues in children How to be more aware of your breathing habits A simple exercise that can improve your blood flow How to optimize oxygen and carbon dioxide Light, slow, and deep - the right way to breathe How to optimize breathing for athletic training Breathing exercises for kids CPAP machines for sleep apnea Improving air quality in your home - Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/K0XWQLo_HqM - Visit Patrick's websites: Buteykoclinic.com Oxygenadvantage.com Instagram @oxygenadvantage and @buteykoclinic Youtube @oxyathlete and @buteykoclinic Check out Patrick's books on Amazon: The Breathing Cure / / Develop New Habits for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life The Oxygen Advantage / / Simple, Scientifically Proven Breathing Techniques to Help You Become Healthier, Slimmer, Faster, and Fitter Atomic Focus / / Harness the True Power of Your Brain, Develop Resilience Against Stress, and Get Focused with Simple Breathing Exercises to Change Your Mental and Physical State - To learn more about red light therapy and shop for the highest-quality red light therapy products, visit www.biolight.shop Stay up-to-date on social media: Instagram YouTube Facebook
