This was done at the American College of Chest Physicians Conference, also known as Chest.  I was delighted to be able to interview Dr. Mary Rice MD, MPH of Harvard University, a person who has incorporated combatting the effects of climate change deeply into her career as a physician and scientist.  We cover a great deal in this episode, from how to get started in your workplace, perils and pitfalls of advocacy, her experience at COP 28, and much more! To Do- 1- Listen to the Clean Air and Climate Advocacy for Busy People episode for ideas on how to get started wherever you are.  2- Scroll the Air Health Our Health podcast feed for climate and clean air concerns that speak to you, and seek out local community efforts to help.  3- If you work in healthcare, learn more about reducing greenhouse gasses from organizations such as Healthcare without Harm.  See References for additional options. 4- If you don't work in healthcare, these issues also affect you. There are definitely ways to make your workplace more climate friendly. Seek out those in your industry who are already doing this and take it to your own workplace. It can be hard to get started, but we can all start by starting. Hopefully every industry will be providing roadmaps to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 5- I am so grateful to the American College of Chest Physicians for providing a form to record this podcast with a live audience. Please consider a donation to the Chest Foundation, which supports everything from research to community partnerships and helping the next generation of clinicians. 6- Please consider leaving this podcast a 5 star review wherever you listen to podcasts. I've been bad about asking for that, but the podcast experts say it helps people discover the podcast. Also consider sharing an episode with a friend to spread the word about the importance of cleaning up the air and combating climate change.

It's crucial to recognize the significant impact that sleep, or lack thereof, can have on our employees' productivity and overall well-being. As managers, we often overlook the various factors that can affect their sleep patterns, which in turn influence their performance during the workday. Factors such as travel, dietary habits, level of physical activity, stress levels, and excessive use of gadgets all play a role in disrupting our employees' sleep routines and personal circadian rhythms. For instance, frequent travel can disrupt one's sleep schedule due to jet lag and changes in time zones. Unhealthy eating habits or consuming stimulants like caffeine late in the day can interfere with the ability to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. Similarly, inadequate exercise or high levels of stress can lead to restless nights and decreased sleep quality. Moreover, the excessive use of electronic devices before bedtime, such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops, can disrupt the body's natural sleep-wake cycle due to the blue light emitted by these devices, thus making it harder for individuals to fall asleep. As managers, it's essential for us to be mindful of these factors and create a supportive environment that promotes healthy sleep habits among our employees. This could involve offering flexibility in work schedules to accommodate varying sleep needs, providing resources or workshops on stress management and sleep hygiene, and fostering a culture that prioritizes work-life balance. By acknowledging and addressing the impact of sleep on our employees' lives, we can ultimately enhance their well-being, productivity, and satisfaction in the workplace. Bijoy E. According to Insider Intelligence, 1 in 5 adult Americans cannot afford the lifesaving prescription drugs they need. And according to the American Hospital Association, approximately 3.5 million patients in the U.S. cannot receive the medical care that they need due to the absence of transportation access to their providers. This statistic does not take into account the reality of the lack of medical providers in itself in given communities across the nation. "Underserved populations" are groups who are disenfranchised due to limited or lack of access to resources, especially within the medical sphere (health insurance, presence of healthcare providers, and treatment modalities). Though often interchangeable, "vulnerable populations" often experience additional barriers to care access (not limited to racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and the socioeconomically disadvantaged). Truly, we see exacerbated health conditions in patients from underserved and vulnerable communities. We are joined today by Dr. Arunima Bera, a double board-certified pediatric critical care hospitalist physician with a focus on underserved populations in Madera County, California. She received her MD from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar in 2014, Pediatrics residency at University at Buffalo/John R. Oishei Children's Hospital in 2017, and Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at UCLA/Mattel Children's Hospital in 2020. In 2019, Dr. Bera won the Young Investigator Research Award from the American College of Chest Physicians, focusing on the clinical outcomes of sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome in pediatric patients. She furthers her research on respiratory illnesses in children, such as bronchiolitis and asthma. Today you'll have an opportunity to learn from a cardiologist, pharmacologist, and author, who has brought his expertise into the world of expert witnesses. Dr. Michael Zema shares what he has learned to sharpen his expert witness abilities. Dr. Zema has a routine of breaking up case analysis with research, which not only relieves the tedium of endless pages of documentation but gives him new insights into the case. He describes some of the pitfalls in electronic medical records with a warning that the copy-and-paste function can propagate a medical error for years. As an example, he describes meeting a patient whose chart incorrectly stated that he'd recently had bypass surgery. When Dr. Zema discovered this error, he found that the man's medical records had perpetuated it for two years. Because of the frequency of pharmaceutical errors, Dr. Zema urges expert witnesses to familiarize themselves as much as possible with pharmacology. He describes a case of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome in which an incorrectly prescribed drug played a big role. Of special value to expert witnesses and attorneys is his approach to cross-examination. He always tries to think like the opposing attorney, an approach he also uses in analyzing the medical information. Be prepared for some top-level information and guidance in this podcast. Join me in this episode of Decoding Medical Records - Tips and Techniques for Expert Witnesses - Dr. Michael Zema What's a good way to effectively navigate through volumes of electronic records? Why can copying and pasting electronic records create problems? How does the copy-and-paste repetition of an error in diagnosis inhibit correct perpetuate continued misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment? How does a strong knowledge of pharmacology assist an expert witness? Why is it essential to refer to the standard of care and other documentation extant at the time of an alleged malpractice incident? In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Dr. Steven Berk; Dean, Executive VP, and Provost of Texas Tech University's Health Science Center, about his journey and philosophy as a leader. Drawing from his memoir “Anatomy of Kidnapping”, Dr. Berk recounts his struggle with working in between the healthcare system while trying to preserve the ethics of health workers. Dr. Berk talks about how he trusts his family and colleagues to keep him anchored and focused on doing the right thing.Sharing his harrowing story of being held at gunpoint and having to say a potentially last goodbye to his son, Dr. Berk emphasizes the importance of a leader to stay calm and logical even in a moment of crisis. By communicating with the kidnaper with calm and talking about back pains and listening to his life stories, Dr. Berk potentially saved his own life; by telling his son a benevolent and convincing lie, Dr. Berk protected his family from imminent danger. This experience not only reminded him to appreciate life and cherish time with loved ones, but also the responsibility of a leader to share the emotional burdens, such as grief, anxiety, and fear of their friends, colleagues, and families, to guide them through tough times.Utilizing the lessons the incident taught him, Dr. Berk strives to nurture the next generations of physicians as better professionals and better people. He wants to teach the right professional ethics to students, but also make sure that they are not mistreated in the healthcare system.More About Our Guest:Appointed Dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President in 2006 and Provost at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2010, Dr. Steven Lee Berk M.D graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at Boston City Hospital.
