President Biden, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and health advocates, took a strong stand at the White House, pushing for reduced asthma inhaler prices. In this stride toward affordable healthcare, major pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, and GlaxoSmithKline recently pledged to cap inhaler costs at $35 a month. The move ensures competition, thereby lowering healthcare costs for millions. The spotlight on patents blocking cheaper, generic alternatives brought to light the administration's crackdown on such practices. The FTC's challenge against over 100 patents underscores Biden's push against pharmaceutical giants profiting at the expense of patients. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America praised the initiative, underscoring the need for broader actions to ensure affordable access to asthma treatments. But challenges remain for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, highlighting the ongoing battle for equitable healthcare pricing. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We can read that 5G is dangerous and can be used as a weapon! Is it true? The phenomenon of electrical hypersensitivity is it just hypersensitivity or can it be proven in studies?   To solve our questions about 5G and radiation from wireless devices. We have invited a scientist that has been doing experiments in this field since the 1980`s.                                                        Professor Olle Johansson is a world-leading  authority in the field of EMF radiation and health effects. He has published more than 800 original articles, reviews, book chapters and conference reports within the fields of basic and applied neuroscience, dermatoscience, epidemiology, and biophysiology.   Among many  achievements he coined the term ”screen dermatitis” which later on was  developed into the functional impairment electrohypersensitivity which  recognition mainly is due to his work. He has also been a guest  professor as well as adjunct professor in basic and clinical  neuroscience at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.           In 2011, Prof. Olle Johansson, was instrumental in producing the Seletun Scientific Statement, a consensus agreement among international scientists on the need to reduce EMF (electromagnetic field) exposures to the population. The paper was published in the journal, Reviews on Environmental Health. The Seletun Scientific Panel's recommendations are extremely important given the unchecked proliferation of wireless radiation over the past decade, such as from cell towers, wireless networks, wireless routers, and cell phones, as well as because of the plans by many ignorant governments to blanket neighborhoods in new, radiation-emitting utility 'smart' meters.   Olle Johansson is – or has been – a member of, i.a., The European Neuroscience Association (ENA), The European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR), IBAS Users of Scandinavia (IBUS), The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), The International Society for Stereology (ISS), The New York Academy of Sciences, The Royal Microscopical Society (RMS), Scandinavian Society for Electron Microscopy (SCANDEM), The Skin Pharmacology Society (SPS), Society for Neuroscience, Svenska Fysiologföreningen, Svenska Intressegruppen för Grafisk Databehandling (SIGRAD), Svenska Läkaresällskapet, and the Svenska Sällskapet för Automatiserad Bildanalys (SSAB).   He has received a number of awards, including the Nokia Consumer Electronics Award, The Grand Environment Award of the Cancer and Allergy Foundation, the SIF Award, Tandvårdsskadeförbundets Pris, and many more. In 2016, Johansson was one of the authors of a report that concluded the health risks of mobile radiation and wireless networks, but this was retracted shortly after because research fraud was pointed out? The reason for this you will hear Olle answer in this episode.   We talk about: Being a guest on the James Delingpole podcast The mobile and insurance industry are exempt from radiation liability since 1990`s Clinical trials done to prove electrical hypersensitivity What is 5G and are there any good studies to prove harm? Why are there so many insects dying? What happens when bacteria are exposed to wireless radiation What can we do? And lots more! If you want to help Olle financing new studies? Have you ever stopped to consider the quality of the air your child is breathing every day in their classroom? It's a fact that indoor air quality can affect IQ test scores, and cognitive development (even during prenatal exposure) and trigger respiratory illnesses like asthma and allergies. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), nearly 26 million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma. This equates to 1 in 13 people; it's a leading chronic disease in children. Currently, there are about 4.8 million children under the age of 18 with asthma. Did you know poor indoor air quality can also affect cognitive function in not just adults, but children and teens? According to IQAir, research reveals that breathing polluted air could impair memory and reasoning, reduce academic performance, and even lower intelligence. Today, we're thrilled to bring back Glory Dolphin Hammes, CEO of IQAir North America. We're picking up from episode #75 where we discussed how air quality affects our sleep. Spring allergies can sneak up on people. If you've been rubbing your eyes, sniffling and sneezing, you could be suffering from allergies.  When spring comes to Minnesota, trees pop with pollen and melting snow releases mold spores into the air. Both of these are common allergens that can trigger an overactive immune system response.  One in every four adults and one in five children have seasonal allergies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people with allergies, symptoms can also include a sore throat, coughing, fatigue and even wheezing for people who have allergy-triggered asthma.  The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get allergies under control. And, that will only become more important as climate change lengthens the pollen season and makes some plants produce more pollen.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks about what's happening with allergies and how to manage symptoms.  Guests:  Dr. Pramod Kelkar is an allergy and asthma specialist with Allina Health who practices in Blaine, Maple Grove and Woodbury.  Kenneth Mendez is president and CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, a national patient organization for people with asthma and allergies, which is involved in support, advocacy, education, and research.  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.

Allergy Friendly Food Companies + Why Some Grocery Chains are Removing Best Before Dates

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 32 million people in the US have food allergies, which means allergy friendly food brands not only have a large audience base, but are also necessities. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about three popular allergy friendly food companies: Partake Foods, Enjoy Life and Free2b Foods. Each company offers a wide variety of sweet and savory snack foods free from all major allergens while prioritizing taste and quality ingredients. Sydney asks the team whether they think we'll see large food and beverage companies offering allergen-free versions of popular snacks or whether smaller allergy friendly companies will have a monopoly over the space. The team also wonder whether there are any allergy friendly meal kit companies since the space is mainly comprised of snack food companies. Also, in this episode, Sydney asks whether best before dates could be contributing to food waste. While food and beverage manufacturers have used the labels for decades to estimate peak freshness, consumers are confused about date codes, often causing more food waste than necessary. Unlike ‘use by' dates, which can be found on perishable food items like meat, dairy and produce, best before dates have nothing to do with food safety and may encourage consumers to throw out food that is perfectly safe to eat. To tackle this problem, some UK grocery chains recently removed best before dates from pre-packaged fruits and vegetables. The team wonder whether it was the right decision to remove best before dates altogether but conclude that it's best to use the senses to determine whether food is safe to eat. Read the full articles here:Top 3 Allergy Friendly Food BrandsAre Best Before Dates on Food Packaging to Blame for Food Waste? For more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

Steph Compton is a Baltimore Organizer for Energy Justice Network, she has been working on Environmental justice issues since 2012 and she is currently working on all things pertaining to zero waste. Baltimore currently has a large waste incinerator in the middle of the city that burns not only Baltimore's trash but surrounding states and counties trash. This makes for some of the most dangerous air to breathe in the nation. MIT researchers showed that Baltimore City had the deadliest air in the nation in 2005. According to the EPA, in 2014, Baltimore was the 81st most air polluted locality in the nation (out of over 9,000) and is the most polluted city in Maryland. In 2018, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranked Baltimore as the 33rd worst asthma capital in the nation. This law we've been working on would force the city's largest air polluter (the Wheelabrator Baltimore trash incinerator) and the nation's largest medical waste incinerator (Curtis Bay Energy) to abide by the nation's strictest standards or shut down. With Steph we talk about how she's going about tackling this incinerator, zero waste and recycling, organizing in Baltimore, politics of the city, deconstruction, and what she's looking forward to in the future. This hour on Where We Live, a look at climate change and health. Physicians turned climate activists see worsening asthma, COPD, and seasonal shifts in vector-borne diseases, plus higher ER visits for heat stress. Hartford and New Haven have the unfortunate distinction of being in the list of Top 20 Asthma Capitals in the country, according to the 2021 report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The American Lung Association puts Fairfield County in its map for the highest ozone in the eastern half of the U.S., in part because of pollution transported from other states. The Governor's Council on Climate Change, Science and Technology Working Group in its 2020 report projected that average temperatures in Connecticut could increase by 5º F (2.7º C) by 2050 compared to the 1970-1999 baseline. Our planet is heading towards a crisis brought on by climate change, but experts say our physical and mental health is also at risk. A 2020 report by the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health found that between 2007 and 2016, heat stress led to an average 422 emergency department visits and 45 hospitalizations per year. Connecticut Public Radio's Nicole Leonard reported that New Haven, Hartford, Litchfield, Tolland, and Windham counties experienced an increase in heavy precipitation, which can and has led to a growth in ticks and mosquitoes, increasing the risk for vector-borne diseases. Meanwhile, health insurers including Connecticut-headquartered Cigna and Aetna hold $24 billion in investments in fossil fuel. As the United Nations' climate summit — COP26 — is in its second week in Scotland with world leaders negotiating how best to limit global warming, what can we do at the state and individual level? Trusting Online Reviews (0:00:00) In today's digital world, online reviews are often the ultimate factor in deciding whether you buy a product. Understanding these reviews used to be simple: if it has a hundred five-star reviews, it's reliable; if it has eight reviews and they're all below three stars, you know to look elsewhere. But as more and more people have started using fake reviews to boost their numbers, it's hard to know what to believe what we read online anymore. So how can we know when to trust these reviews? Today we are joined by Saoud Khalifah, the founder of a review-tracking software called “Fakespot”, here with us to talk about recognizing authentic reviews.   Excessive Spending (0:22:41) A car payment. Clarinet lessons. Groceries. All things that might be in your budget this month. But, during this time of economic uncertainty, a lot of families are finding that they have to work with a tighter budget. How do we determine “wants” from “needs” and cut out the excessive spending? Here to help us navigate this issue is Liz Frazier, our favorite family financial planner and new Director of Financial Education for Copper—the teenage banking app.   COVID-19 Holiday Gatherings (0:38:19) The leaves are beginning to turn and so is the temperature, which can only mean one thing—the holiday season is upon. Before we know it we'll be tricker treating, roasting a turkey, and decking the halls. However, the holidays this year will likely look a little different from those of years past—thus prompting the question, what will the holiday season look with social distancing guidelines remaining in effect? Here to answer this question and give us some tips on planning intentional holiday gatherings is friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes.   Allergy Proofing Your House (0:52:48) Does vacuuming send you into a flurry of sneezing? Or maybe it's the cat hair floating in the air. Either way, certain environmental factors in your home are likely responsible for your swollen eyes and runny nose. Luckily, there's things we can do to prevent allergy symptoms before they even start. Here to help us understand what might be causing the sneezing and to allergy-proof our homes is Kenneth Mendez, CEO and President of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.   The Urban Institute (1:12:50) Out of the many hats we wear as parents, we never really seem to take off the one of “teacher.” We teach our kids the important things like how to walk, talk, and read. We also teach them the menial things, like how to choose the best brand of ice cream at the grocery store. As our kids grow up and enter their teenage years, do you ever find yourself wishing you could teach them more about the real, working world? Well thanks to youth apprenticeship programs, you can! Today, we're talking with Zach Boren from Urban Institute on how your children can learn invaluable lessons and be better prepared for the workforce through such programs.   Toxic Friendships (1:27:08) We often hear the term “toxic relationship” and with the more life experience we get, the more we are able to identify these kinds of relationships in our lives. But, it's hard to notice the red flags when we truly care about someone. And if we let them go on for too long, these relationships can be emotionally damaging. To help you identify toxic people in your lives and discuss how you can heal from the damage they cause, we've invited. She is also secretary and treasurer of the Madison County Clean Power Coalition Chapter (MCCPC) a chapter of BREDL whose mission is to protect the environment and advocate for the communities polluted by the processing and burning of railroad ties. Biomass includes wood products, agricultural residues or forest waste, and other highly toxic feed stocks such as construction and demolition waste. And in this instance the burning of railroad ties. Burning these materials as fuel for electricity pollutes the air we breathe. In a powerful new letter signed by the Allergy & Asthma Network, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Lung Association, American Public Health Association, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, National Association of County & City Health Officials, National Environmental Health Association, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, the health community's message is clear: “Biomass is far from “clean” – burning biomass creates air pollution that causes a sweeping array of health harms, from asthma attacks to cancer to heart attacks, resulting in emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and premature deaths.” With Ruth Ann we talk about the biomass plant in their county, the environmental and health impacts, community involvement, HB 857 they got passed, and what their plans for the future are. An Inside Look on Food Allergies and Food Sensitivities An allergy, despite its cause, is often categorized as a common chronic disease. This means, that allergies tend to last a long time or re-occur from time to time. There have been cases where children have outgrown their allergies, yet; for some, their allergies seem to worse as they get older. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, allergies are mainly due to an unbalanced immune system. Hence, the immune system will recognize a substance (allergen) in the body as harmful and in turn, release antibodies. The antibodies released by the immune system to fight the allergens are commonly referred to as Immunoglobulins E (IgE). Allergies can range between mild to severe. In some cases, allergies may only cause discomfort, while in other cases; they may be life-threatening. Some individuals tend to react to different allergens such as pollen, dust and even food. However, for the purposes of this article, we shall be focusing on food sensitivities and allergies. To better understand this topic, we shall address IgE, IgA and IgG immune responses or reactions in detail. IgE, IgG and IgA Immune Responses Defined First things first, IgE, IgA and IgG are antibodies, otherwise known as immunoglobulins, are released by the immune system.  They are often released when our bodies come in contact with foreign, yet harmless substances such as pollen and food. They can also be released to respond to harmful substances such as bacteria and viruses. Essentially, antibodies are released to fight foreign substances that enter the body. IgA and IgG Immune Responses /Reactions IgA and IgG immune reactions can both be categorized under food sensitivities. These types of reactions are often delayed, whereas an IgE is often immediate in terms of reacting. In other words, IgA and IgE reactions may take between mere hours or days before manifesting. The IgA immunoglobulins are specifically located in the mucus membrane. These antibodies tend to respond to viruses and bacteria present in our bodies. However, IgA immunoglobulins tend to respond to foods that cause inflammation and may lead to symptoms such headaches and joint pain just to name a few. The IgG immunoglobulins tend to respond to food proteins, as well as those that may cause inflammation. Such a reaction can often manifest itself in the form of itchy skin, diarrhea and stomach ache, just to name a few. IgE Immune Reaction This type of allergic reaction is considered a food allergy, not a food sensitivity. As previously mentioned an IgE reaction is immediate and can take less than a few hours or a few minutes to react. The types of food that result to such a reaction incidentally peanuts, dairy products and even fish. Unlike the IgA and IgG reactions, the IgE reaction often manifests itself differently. The symptoms include the following: Coughing    Vomiting   Teary eyes   Swollen lips    Swollen tongue   Red eyes   Runny nose Wheezing   Loss of consciousness   In conclusion, it is always best to find out the food items that you may be allergic or sensitive to. One effective way of doing this is by having a food allergy or food sensitivity test.
