One common concern among patients with scoliosis is can my curve become big enough that it starts affecting the way my lung functions. In this episode, Dr. Tony Nalda addresses the potential impact of scoliosis on lung function. There are three main types of scoliosis: idiopathic, neuromuscular, and congenital. Idiopathic scoliosis, the most prevalent form, lacks a known cause, making it a multifactorial condition. Scoliosis tends to progress during growth phases, leading to physical changes. Symptoms vary among individuals, with postural changes being a common indicator in children, while pain often drives the diagnosis in adults. Impact on Lung Function The curvature of the spine in scoliosis affects muscles, tissues, and organs, creating asymmetrical forces within the body that can lead to a functional lung capacity problem. The thoracic curves can alter rib arches and spaces, potentially affecting lung function. The size of the curve, uneven forces, and spinal rigidity may contribute to functional lung capacity problems. Not all individuals with similar curve sizes experience the same symptoms or lung impairments. Factors such as age, type, curvature, and physical condition contribute to individual variations. Various methods, including spirometry and functional lung capacity tests, can assess lung function. Testing is important to understand how scoliosis may be affecting an individual's lungs. Strategies for Lung Health Never let your curve become big. If you never let your curve become large, you're less likely to develop a lung functional concern. Reduce your curve. If you have a significant curve, the smaller you get it, the less likely it is to affect your lungs. Despite surgery being promoted as a means to address potential lung issues associated with scoliosis, the actual impact on lung function remains uncertain, and individual cases may vary. Each scoliosis case is unique which is why a patient needs to undergo individualized testing. By understanding the relationship between scoliosis and lung function, individuals can take proactive steps to manage their condition, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and maintaining smaller curves to mitigate potential impacts on lung health. Dr. Neeta Thakur is a pulmonary and critical care physician at the University of California San Francisco, where she serves as the Medical Director of the San Francisco General Hospital Chest Clinic, and studies how social and environmental stress negatively affect people suffering from asthma and COPD. She is working hard to help us understand the history of race adjustment in lung function testing and what we should do going forward to provide better health for all. To Do: 1- To learn more about the history of air pollution's impact on health, you can go back to the first season for a host of episodes. For example, podcast Episode 2 with Dr. Matt Drake and Episode 17 with Dr. Ritz. Learn about how red-lining can affect those asthma risk in Episode 27 with Prof. Shandas. 2- I am serious about the importance of hope! Learn more about how policy can work- listen to Episode 12 about cleaning up diesel school buses with Dr. Adar and Episode 16 with the American Lung Association's analysis of the economic stimulus and decrease in asthma we might see with a transition to electric vehicles 3- Listen about one person's story with asthma growing up in a previously red-lined district by listening to Ashia Allen, a patient of mine. 4- For more about air pollution and air toxics in the Portland Metro area, listen to Episode 5 with Mary Peveto and Episode 7 with Prof. Linda George 5- If you haven't read “The Fire Next Time,” be sure to do so. If you are in healthcare and care for those with respiratory illness, “Breathing Race into the Machine” is certainly worth reading. 6- Finally, consider a donation to the American Thoracic Society, which works tirelessly for clean air and has funded research like that done by Dr. Thakur early in her career. Full disclosure, I volunteer as a member of the ATS Environmental Health Policy Committee. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit blog post for more information, or go to airhealthourhealth.org. People getting married who have CF. We don't hear it happening very often. We've always been told that people with CF should not be in the same room, unless they are 6 feet apart. This is impossible to do if you have children with the disease, and of course if you marry someone with CF.Zack and Farrel both have CF, knowing the reasons why they shouldn't marry, did not keep them apart. They met in 2014 in a Facebook Cystic Fibrosis group where Farrel was sharing a testimony of how changing her diet had helped improve her lung function and quality of life, despite losing a couple of pounds in the process. Zack, being familiar with his own journey with crossfit, had experienced similar results in increased lung function even though he too had lost a few pounds while increasing his cardiovascular exercise. They didn't believe in the ‘eat everything you can' in high calorie mantra that was told to all CF parents at diagnosis. The couple followed each other on social media, but it wasn't until the following May of 2015, when the daily communication began.Zack (37 years old) and Farrel (40 years old) married in July of 2016. From 1961 to 1970, healthy U.S. males between the ages of 21 and 81 enrolled in the ongoing Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study. One of the objectives of the study is to characterize the biomedical and psychosocial parameters of normal aging (distinct from the development of disease). There are a total of 2,280 participants in the Normative Aging Study (NAS). In the current Aging study, researchers included 696 elderly men from the NAS. “The present study included 696 elderly men with 1,070 visits during years of 1999-2013.” In search of associations between biomarkers of aging and lung function, the researchers first collected the study participants' personal characteristics, including age, smoking history, height, weight, BMI, education, blood work, and other measures. They then analyzed lung function using three tests: forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced expiratory volume in one second / forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC), and maximum mid-expiratory flow (MMEF). Next, the team analyzed the participants' epigenetic biomarkers of age; including GrimAgeAccel, PhenoAgeAccel, intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA), extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (EEAA), and Zhang's DNAmRiskScore; as well as non-epigenetic biomarkers of age, including telomere length and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN). They then assessed for associations between these biomarkers and the three measures of lung function. Vidcast: https://youtu.be/VYcpbXexVsM Each participant underwent pulmonary function tests and recorded their use of NSAIDs over the month before testing. Air quality measurements during that month were added to the database. Analysis showed that NSAID use, which turned out to be mostly aspirin, reduced the effects of air pollution on lung function by one-half. If you expect significant exposure to air pollution, you might try aspirin. Better strategies are use of a mask or remaining in clean air. In today's episode, Buck shares why protecting and nurturing your lungs by improving indoor air quality is so vitally important. And even though government health organizations and consumer packaged goods companies haven't yet "gotten the memo," he reveals steps you can take RIGHT NOW to get environmental toxins out of the house and start breathing easier.
In this week's episode I highlight, five hacks (and a bonus six hack) of how to improve the air quality around you, as well as improve lung function. Ever since the last two years, since we were bombarded with the "California fires," I've been thinking of ways to protect my children and improve overall immunity. This is even more important now with the Coronavirus hysteria, and people trying to protect themselves from airborne pathogens.
