Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you to preach faithfully, clearly, and better. The sermon preparation is a twofold process of getting the text right and getting the truth across. In terms of biblical exegesis (getting the text across), I commend to you the inductive Bible study process: Observation: What does the text say? Interpretation: What does the text mean? Application: How does the text apply? Correlation: How does the text relate? In this episode, H.B. focuses on doing observations. The tools you need for this part of your word work are a Bible, something to take on, and the illumination of the Holy Spirit. What should you look for in observations? Key words. Key places. Key people. Vital statistics. Figurative language. Literary genre. Diagnostic questions. Circles of context. Cross-references. Passage structure. Rhetorical functions. What's not stated. Dominating theme. Authorial intent. Gospel focus. Practical implications. Sanctified brainstorming. For contact, information, or resources, visit hbcharlesjr.com. Former MI6 spy and now celebrated author Matthew Dunn sits down with us to peel back the curtain on a life lived in the shadows. His transformation from university student to one of Britain's master spies is the stuff of novels, yet it was his reality from the enigmatic recruitment into the Secret Intelligence Service to the rigorous training that followed. We traverse the complex landscape of international spying, where the stakes are as high as national security and personal survival. You'll gain remarkable insights into the recruitment process of MI6, the thrilling and dangerous missions that span across continents, and the ethical quandaries faced by those in the spy trade. Matthew also discusses the intense challenges of maintaining a double life and the intricate dance between transparency and secrecy that is quintessential to an operative's existence. This episode also illuminates the power of transformation as we discuss the shift from espionage to empowering others through writing and mentoring. Matthew speaks passionately about his work with aspiring authors, reflecting on how teaching and creativity have become a cornerstone of his post-MI6 life. We celebrate the transformative impact of pursuing passions and taking bold steps towards our dreams. We're rebroadcasting an early episode this week—to us, a classic, and perhaps as good as new to newer listeners. What happens when a movie series becomes not just your favorite or your religion, but literally forms the basis for all of your thinking and imagination and everything for your entire life? Such is the power of the Star Wars franchise. We dive into the murky depths of Star Wars fandom through the documentary The People Vs. George Lucas to think about authorial intent, the biblical canon, who owns our imaginations, and what it means to truly love fictional characters. In this episode of Chasing Leviathan, PJ and Dr. Noël Carroll discuss whether the author's intent matters when evaluating an aesthetic work and, relatedly, whether moral defects in a work of art are an artistic defect. Dr. Carroll also explores the historical contexts of these debates and how these positions have developed in contemporary discussions on the philosophy of art. For a deep dive into Dr. Noël Carroll's work, check out his book: Classics in Western Philosophy of Art: Major Themes and Arguments
We have a wonderful conversation exploring the 4 causes of Scripture, Authorial intent, and how to read Scripture like the Fathers did.
The Importance of Authorial Intent, presented by Bob DeWaay and Jessica Kramasz. We discuss the importance of properly interpreting Scripture. The Holy Spirit inspired author determined the meaning. Loose paraphrases and allegorical interpretations lead to error. We cite examples from Rick Warren and Priscilla Shirer. (duration 00:30:21) Click here to play
Fresh off a Thoreau-down with the Frugal Chariot, spring is in the air for Hannah and Sam, even as they struggle with how to think about authorial intent. Thanks to a prison book group obsessed with the genius of Octavia Butler, Sam is second-guessing his dedication to the text. Has he been missing out? With Twitter and video interviews giving us more and more perspective from the author, how do we change our reading experiences? What happens when authors, like JK Rowling, tell you things about their characters that you can't glean from their writing? Really, though, it's about struggling with how we talk critically about texts. Also: Hear about "Beneficence" (turns out there is, indeed, a town in Maine called Grafton Notch), which somehow takes a detour into Dennis Lehane's "Gone Baby Gone." Can't we just have books where no one dies? And why is May 17 the day that every book is coming out? Such as "The Colony," the discussion of which reminds Sam of "Robinson Crusoe" (though it's unclear if the summary he provides is accurate), which somehow leads to a discussion of Robin Hood and why there isn't ample fanfic of the Robin Hood universe. And don't forget about the Newburyport Literary Festival! Or Record Store Day! (Sponsored by: The Taproom Reading Series!)
In a body of work that defined a subgenre, Satoshi Kon's PAPRIKA is something like a culmination. His final feature film realizes some of his longest-brewing concepts (identity, community, connection, division, reality, fiction) so well that it leaves others feeling somewhat unfulfilled – like the director's own career after his death at just 46 years old. As certified Konheads, we discuss PAPRIKA's trippy aesthetics, conflation of the digital world with the subconscious, the film's problematic aspects and author self-insertion, and where the various subplots do (and don't) serve the movie's larger thesis. Today we're beginning a two-parter on the phrase "The Word of God." I hope it's a help to you. As promised in the episode, here's a list of how the phrase "Word of God" is used in the Old Testament as follows: It's found 49 times across 48 verses in the while Protestant Bible, but only four of those times are in the Old Testament. Three out of the four times it's found in the English Old Testament, it's a translation of the Hebrew word “דָּבָר (daw-bar)” which it self simply means “matter of thing,” or “act, advice, affair, answer, counsel, decree,” and so on. All three of these times refer not to a written word, but a shown word (in the case of I Samuel 9:7) or a spoken word to a prophet (in the case of I Kings 12:22 and I Chronicles 17:3). The other time we see in the Hebrew Scriptures, it's found in the thirtieth chapter of the book of Proverbs, which is Agur's proverb. It's the Hebrew word “אִמְרָה (eem-raw)” and means “something said, answer, saying, speech,” and “word.” So it's pretty clear we're talking about edicts and declarations, just like in the other three cases — Agur has just chosen to use another word for it. Now, that's not to mentioned the "Word of the LORD," but it has the exact same meaning, which is simply "A declaration of the mind of God." I cover the New Testament uses a bit more thoroughly in the episode, so no need for notes on that, methinks.

In this episode, Judas and Rachel take a metaphorical axe to the doors of toxic masculinity as they discuss The Shining, Kubrick's Authorial intent and how that probably differs from our feminist viewing of the film. We talk about complexities of family, abuse, and how toxic masculinity is a big player in the story of Jack Torrence. Trigger warnings: multiple mentions and discussion of abuse and domestic violence. Thank you so much for tuning in and joining us on this little passion project! There are two schools of thought when it comes to interpreting a work of fiction. One says we should pay attention to what the author intended, while the other says we can completely disregard the author's intent. I fall in the former camp, and this video explains why. ENGAGING WITH SCRIPTURE Determining the original meaning of the text. Authorial intent vs. Reader-response. - Authorial Intent: discovering the author's message. - Reader-response: discover the audience's response. Cataloging the “then and now,” differences. - Covenant: Old covenant vs. New covenant - Situation - Culture & language - Governance & politics Cataloging the “then and now,” similarities. - Covenant - Situation Discovering the spiritual principle or the Spirit of the text. - Use “then & now” similarities to determine the spiritual principle. - Apply the parts-whole spiral [reflect back & forth between the teaching of the text and the teachings of the whole Bible]. Applying the principle in our lives or “walking the spirit” of the text. - Scripture is meant to be lived out. - A text generally has one spiritual principle but many applications. - Wrong application of a spiritual principle can be very harmful. Today is part two of the sermon that Pastor Brent preached last week. This section of the sermon on the mount gives us six, "you have heard it said" but I say to you" statements by Jesus.
In this portion of the Sermon on the Mount, we discover that God meant what he said! This is called authorial intent. Authorial intent, what the author intended to communicate when he wrote what he wrote, is key to interpreting the Bible. It is the author's intentions that we, as students of the Bible, seek to recover. The meaning is in the text!

The show is set in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (called "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to protect their world from monsters called Grimm. The name RWBY is derived from the four main characters' forenames: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, as well as their associated theme colors; Red, White, Black, and Yellow. Following several promotional trailers, the first episode was screened at the Rooster Teeth convention event RTX and then released on their website in July 2013.” ‒ [Wikipedia - RWBY](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RWBY) * A fan survey from about a year ago gives us [some idea of the demographics](https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/6ckube/rrwby_user_survey_results/) (and other interesting tidbits about the fandom) with over 700 respondents: * 86% of respondents identified as male (and a non-zero percentage as assholes: Attack Helicopter) * Almost 86% are under age 24 (67% are between 18 and 24); if we do some math, its reasonable to assume that means that folks probably started watching between ages 13-19 (i.e. five years ago) * Just over half (55%) watch Rooster Teeth's podcast ### First Impressions #### Z: I knew absolutely nothing about RWBY before starting the research for this episode. I'd seen some cosplayers and had no idea who they were until someone told me, but had no idea that it was a web series or “anime” or whatever. Also, had no idea that it was something Rooster Teeth did - and had no idea how big Rooster Teeth is until digging into the research for this episode. #### T: I couldn't even tell you what my first impressions of RWBY were, not because it was so long ago, but because a lot of life happened between now and then. I was following along pretty closely for a period, though digging into the research, that was probably only the second season. I … definitely was watching for the Anime-ness of it all. ### Famous Last Words What did we have to say about next week's topic, _Beyblade_ with only our first impressions? **G:** How much is focussed on the battle tops in the anime? 50/50? 90/10? **T:** Is Beyblade still running? If so, what innovations have there been in battle tops? **Z:** Is there a world championship tournament? If so, who is the world champion Beyblader? ## Where can you find us? Crank up the speakers and blast Madonna's Die Another Day because Episode #8 of The Words Are Not Enough is here!In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* Ben Cooke returning for Bond 25 * In an apparent exclusive from Archive007, Daniel Craig's stunt double, Ben Cooke, has reportedly stepped into the role of Stunt Coordinator for Bond 25, replacing longtime Coordinator, Gary Powell.* Daniel Craig banned from getting romantic with Moneypenny * It seems the writing process for Bond 25 is in full swing. According to the Express, an anonymous LA source has claimed the following regarding the ongoing scripting process: “The production company have reached out to several writers to suggest plot ideas and twists for Bond in Daniel's final outing. They wanted ideas that had not been seen in their franchise before to try to shake things up. One idea was for Bond finally to move beyond flirting and one liners and actually share a romance with Moneypenny. But that idea was nixed as it would go against the whole relationship built up during their screen careers.” * This seems in line with comments Naomi Harris has recently made regarding her off-screen relationship with Daniel Craig and how their chemistry plays on screen: "Chemistry is something you either have or don't have, so its a real gamble when people cast you, because you just never know whether the chemistry's going to work. Sometimes you have couples who are dating in real life and they have no chemistry on screen whatsoever so you just never know. I am just lucky that it works with Daniel and I'm looking forward to coming back.” * While she doesn't outright state it, her comments seem to suggest a continuation of the platonic-but-flirtatious dynamic we have seen thus far in the series.* Fincher Interview: Maybe tackle a Bond film? * In a recent interview with Empire, David Fincher revealed that he would not want to do a Star Wars film due to the immense pressure; adding that he had discussed helming the upcoming Episode 9 with Kathleen Kennedy, but ultimately declined. * While this doesn't directly pertain to Bond, David Fincher is a name that has come up frequently surrounding the Bond franchise, but is an idea that has often been dismissed owing to Fincher's seeming aversion to franchise films. But with this news that he considered Star Wars, does this mean he may consider Bond at some point down the track?Q-Branch* The Man With The Golden Gun Manuscript Emerges * A one-of-a-kind author's proof of 'The Man With The Golden Gun' has emerged that contains Ian Fleming's revisions to his original manuscript for his final James Bond novel. The corrected typescript is 182 numbered pages of typed foolscap, with five further preliminary pages and a single sheet of suggested (later adopted) corrections by Kingsley Amis, all bound in a cloth folder. Authorial revisions in Ian Fleming's handwriting cover approximately 80 pages with further editorial revisions in green and black ink. Fleming's corrections are mainly quite significant, rewriting entire sentences, adding or removing paragraphs, etc* Becoming Bond hitting Blu-Ray & DVD on Nov. 14th* The Best of John Barry (AKA Bond) Concert in London * If you're in London on November 16, check out PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA's THE BEST OF JOHN BARRY - BOND AND BEYOND concert at the Royal Festival Hall.
