What could you achieve if you let go of all excuses and limiting beliefs? In this deeply motivational episode, Nicole Jansen welcomes Lawrence “Stoney” Stone—a remarkable martial arts grandmaster, published author, stunt coordinator, rock band singer, and cancer survivor whose life story is anything but ordinary. Born with congenital hip problem, later with CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy) a degenerative nerve disease, Stoney has faced significant physical challenges since birth, yet has refused to let them define or limit him. From building future champions in his dojo to serving as an executive protection consultant, Stoney's impact ripples across countless lives and disciplines. Join us as Stoney opens up about the powerful lessons learned from his “spanking grandma,” and his real-life journey of overcoming adversity with purpose, faith, and fierce love. He shares how mentorship, tough love, a sense of responsibility, and unwavering honesty have fueled his legacy—prompting us all to step up, stop making excuses, and love with conviction. Whether you're searching for inspiration, seeking actionable leadership insights, or grappling with challenges of your own, this conversation will leave you empowered and ready to tackle whatever comes next. What We Discuss in This Episode How did Stoney overcome significant physical limitations to become a martial arts grandmaster and mentor to champions? What role did family and “tough love” play in shaping his unstoppable mindset? How do you guide others—especially young people—out of victimhood and toward responsibility and growth? What does it mean to “not own” your challenges or diagnoses? How can leaders and mentors balance empathy with calling others to greatness? Why is authenticity and emotional expression crucial for true leadership? What does it look like to surrender to purpose and let go of micromanaging your life's plan? How do faith and spirituality underpin resilience and transformation? What lasting advice does Stoney offer for living a meaningful, impactful life? 10 Key Takeaways Lead by Example: Young people and mentees learn most from who you are and what you do—not just what you say or teach. Tough Love Builds Resilience: Support combined with high expectations (“spanking grandma”) pushes us to unprecedented growth. Refuse to “Own” Limitations: Don't take on negative identities around illness or labels—claim victory and move forward. Surround Yourself with Greatness: Your environment and your circle shape your possibilities and determination. Your Challenges Are Your Strength: Facing adversity builds the grit and wisdom necessary to help others. Balance Compassion and Accountability: True mentors love fiercely AND hold people to a higher standard. Embrace Vulnerability: Emotional honesty and caring openly are strengths, not weaknesses, for leaders. Purpose Over Perfection: Focus on finding and fulfilling your unique design rather than achieving flawlessness. Take Responsibility: We must model and teach personal responsibility; excuses perpetuate victimhood and stagnation. Keep Growing and Giving: Growth is a lifelong journey—keep learning, serving, and evolving no matter your stage or circumstances. Favorite Quotes "I've never really relied on or counted on being different. I've never been afraid to stand in front of people and tell them I care. And that makes a difference." — Lawrence Stone "Because I didn't know I was different, because I didn't accept that—I'm just me. I love me. I love what I do. I love who I am, where I am, and why I am." — Lawrence Stone "If I don't believe in me, how can I expect someone else to believe in me? You have to believe in yourself first, no matter what the world says." — Lawrence Stone This episode is a rich tapestry of wisdom, humor, and heart. Tune in—and rediscover what's possible when you stop making excuses and start living your purpose. Welcome back to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun', which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!Based on James Clavell's novel, FX's 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.If that wasn't enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker', for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!Still want more? She also worked on the wonderfully fun DC superhero drama ‘Legends of Tomorrow', performing the stunt work for Hawkgirl, so we touch on that in the interview too! Sharlene's other projects include things such as 'The Man In The High Castle', 'Never Let Go', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'Siren', 'See', 'The 100', 'The Rookie', and lots more!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. At 16, George spent a summer assisting stunt coordinator Greg Powell at Pinewood Studios, and his life has been dedicated to stunts ever since. George shares how he met the requirements for the British Stunt Register (while explaining what the organization actually does) and how the structure of the stunt department encourages the gradual but meaningful development of skills in its members. We also question George about his recent expansion into 2nd unit directing and learn how he coordinated the car chase in BARBIE using his daughter's walkie-talkies. We later learn how new technologies and advances in visual effects have assisted the stunt department in safely executing elaborate stunts, and George reflects on the department's modern pivot away from its historically machismo culture. George also reveals how he determines whether an actor can (or should) participate in a stunt, and we learn how he builds out his team when hired for a job. We also get George to reflect on the unique challenges of designing stunts for TENET amidst its many locales and its time-defying script. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Hi, this is a bonus episode. Sometimes I get invited to interview a particular behind the scenes artist and I've decided I should say yes to them and get them out as bonus episodes. So in this bonus episode, I spoke with stunt coordinator, Krista Perry. Krista is a, native Californian, who grew up travelling the country at the age of eight for competitive swimming. Finishing out her career as an All American Swimmer in the state of California. She is now a stunt performer and stunt coordinator, most recently working on Killers of the Flower moon and the series Reservation Dogs. So here's my conversation with Krista. I hope you enjoy it.TakeawaysThe stunt industry is male-dominated, but Krista found her way into it through her background as an athlete.Discipline and teamwork are crucial in both athletics and stunts.Body awareness is important in stunts, and technology allows performers to analyze their form and make improvements.Working with actors who lack physical awareness can be challenging, but having a double provides a backup plan.Script breakdown and casting for stunts involve finding the right people with the necessary skills and background. The adaptation to VFX in stunts has allowed for more creative possibilities.Trust and relationships are key in the stunt industry, and working with familiar team members fosters a sense of shorthand and communication.Working on both big and small productions offers different experiences and opportunities for learning. There is a potential for Oscars for stunts to recognize the hard work and contributions of stunt performers.Donate ButtonAll the links

Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Krista Perry, the Stunt Coordinator for Season 3 of ‘Reservation Dogs'.‘Reservation Dogs', which is available on Disney+ in the UK and on FX on Hulu in the USA, follows four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob, and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious, and faraway land of California.Krista Perry is a native Californian, who grew up travelling the country at the age of eight for competitive swimming. Finishing out her career as an All American Swimmer in the state of California. There's nothing in the water she has not mastered or attempted. However, she had a rather interesting route into film, which we cover in the interview. The stunt work on the series involved working with the actors so they can confidently execute their stunts, coordinating challenging horse stunts while maintaining set safety, and even locating and casting a horse-riding conquistador!Outside of ‘Reservation Dogs', Krista has worked on shows and films such as ‘Killers of the Flower Moon', ‘Dark Winds', ‘Roswell, New Mexico', ‘Blue Bloods', ‘The Right Stuff', ‘Fancy Dance', and ‘A Creature Was Stirring'.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. On many top ten lists of most dangerous stunts of all time is a scene from “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” (2011) in which Tom Cruise's death-defying Ethan Hunt scales a skyscraper using suction gloves and makes a nerve-wracking jump, which leaves him hanging by one foot. The latest installment, “Mission: Impossible–Dead Reckoning Part One,” is no exception with audiences leaving the theaters mystified at how Cruise drove a motorcycle off a cliff. Stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood has been the stunt coordinator for the last three Mission: Impossible films. Eastwood has been in the industry for nearly 30 years and is credited with stunt work on some of the biggest recent blockbusters like “Interstellar,” “Inception” and “Troy.” Eastwood joins Larry on FilmWeek to discuss some of the biggest stunts he worked on for “Mission: Impossible–Dead Reckoning,” how he prepares actors to do death-defying feats, and whether or not  the Oscars should add a stunt category to the awards.
