204 The Baha'i Faith [Part 2] with Steve Matthews and James WalkerJesus once asked His disciples who they thought He was. Rightly did Peter confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Such a confession was not revealed to Peter by flesh and blood, but by the Father, as Jesus told Him. There are adherents of the Bahai'i Faith, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that began in 1844, who claim they follow the teachings of Jesus too. There are some 8,000 Baha'i centers of worship in the U.S. and many Americans adhere to the Baha'i faith. But who do the Baha'i say that Jesus is? Is he the same Jesus of the Bible? This week on the Profile we continue our conversation with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews, who continues to unpack the syncretistic and contrary doctrines and practices of the Baha'i faith. Steve Matthews is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well. He has his M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Trinity International University and is involved in launching ExaminingTheCults.Related Links: Free access to some related Watchman Profiles: Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on The Baha'i Faith by Robert Pardon: watchman.org/Bahai Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Shia Islam by W. You have probably seen the bumper sticker "COEXIST" made up of several different symbols representing different belief systems and religions. But that bumper sticker is a command, an imperative. The fundamental question about that bumper sticker is "Who is issuing this command?" The Baha'i Faith is no exception to this inclusivism. They attempt to affirm that other religions are valid revelations of God and even ascribe to some of the teachings of Jesus. But this inclusivism is not really inclusive, as the only proper interpretation of the world's religions is given through the ultimate authority of the Baha'i faith, Baha'u'llah, who died in 1892. This week James Walker, the president of Watchman Fellowship, speaks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews who gives us an in-depth analysis of the Baha'i faith and why their doctrines of inclusivism and of Jesus are both contradictory and in error. Steve Matthews is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well.

They tell me about their studies and the community service they're involved in. We discuss the Institute Process, the importance of service and community-building work, and they share their own personal experiences in this process. Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode, I'm in Reykjavik, Iceland with Halldor Thorgeirsson, the Chair of Iceland’s Climate Council, and retired Senior Director of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC). We talk about the environment, and Halldor teaches me about how Carbon Matter really matters. He tells me about Iceland, his work, how he became a Baha'i, the importance of consultation and accompaniment, Baha'is who have influenced his life, and the importance of moral leadership and engaging in constructive forces in our society. I hope you enjoy the conversation! Here's the English translation of that prayer: "I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting." * Halldor makes reference to the following Writings of Baha'u'llah: "Love Me, that I may love thee. In this episode, I'm at my home in LA with Derik Smith, a professor in the Department of Literature at Claremont McKenna College in California, and his work focuses on African American literary culture, with a particular interest in poetry. We talk about African American poet and Baha'i, Robert Hayden, plus we look at the concept of black people being likened to the "pupil of the eye" in the Baha'i Writings. We also discuss racism, the prison system, constructive resilience, and the role each one of us can play in ensuring individual and social transformation and justice. I hope you enjoy the conversation! Dr. Smith also teaches and writes about representations of blackness in American film and musical culture. His 2018 monograph, 'Robert Hayden In Verse: New Histories of African American Poetry and the Black Arts Era', recently won the College Language Association's annual book award. His current scholarship focuses on the poetics of rap, and the rise of the genre during the final decades of the twentieth century, as well as the connection between critical race studies and the Baha’i Faith. Smith regularly teaches courses in American prisons and nurtures activist interests in prison studies and pedagogy. He and his family live in Southern California, USA. We talk about the importance of 'active' listening, mediation and arbitration, and rehabilitation as an alternative to the justice system. She shares where she sees the Baha'i community going and reminds us that we're a 'learning community', and she tells us the key to happiness. I hope you enjoy the conversation with this remarkable woman! By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbor. Ponder this in thy heart; how it behooveth thee to be. Verily justice is My gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes." "Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an answerer of the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge. Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech. Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts. Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be an ornament to the countenance of truth, a crown to the brow of fidelity, a pillar of the temple of righteousness, a breath of life to the body of mankind, an ensign of the hosts of justice, a luminary above the horizon of virtue, a dew to the soil of the human heart, an ark on the ocean of knowledge, a sun in the heaven of bounty, a gem on the diadem of wisdom, a shining light in the firmament of thy generation, a fruit upon the tree of humility." "...Bring thyself to account each day ere thou art summoned to a reckoning; for death, unheralded, shall come upon thee and thou shalt be called to give account for thy deeds." Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode I'm in Chelsea, England with Moojan Momen - medical doctor by day, academic by night! Moojan has authored dozens of books and papers on a variety of topics ranging from things like 'The Baha'i Faith and Hinduism', to 'The God of Baha'u'llah'. Moojan tells me what led him to research and writing, and he also shares his thoughts on what makes the Baha'i Faith unique. We discuss the emphasis Baha'u'llah places on consultation, and we also look at how certain social structures can change if we want them to, and the importance of that change coming from the grassroots. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! Today I read a passage from Baha'i Library Online titled "Abdu'l-Baha on Christ and Christianity: An interview with Pasteur Monnier on the relationship between the Baha'i Faith and Christianity" in Paris on February 17, 1917. I also read from the Bible, King James Version, John 13:34-35. I continue our trek through The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 57th and 58th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer by Baha'u'llah for unity from BahaiPrayers.org. To all of my Christian friends, I wish you a peace-filled Christmas...
Today I read a passage from Some Answered Questions by Abdu'l-Baha, Chapter 30 titled Adam and Eve. I continue reading The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 55th and 56th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer from Prayers and Meditations by Baha'u'llah pages 240-242.
Today I read four passages. The first passage is from Baha'u'llah and the New Era by J.E. Esslemont pages 85-86. The second passage is from Baha'i Administration by Shoghi Effendi page 10. The third passage is from Advent of Divine Justice by Shoghi Effendi, pocket sized edition pages 23-26, and I want to clarify that the Beloved Guardian was quoting Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha throughout this passage. The fourth passage is from Baha'u'llah by the Baha'i International Committee on page 8. Again this passage also contains quotes by Baha'u'llah. I continue reading The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 53rd and 54th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer by The Bab from the Baha'i Prayer Book on pages 170-171.
Today I continue reading from the Kitab-I-Iqan by Baha'u'llah pages 15-22. I continue reading The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 51st and 52nd Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with two prayers by Abdu'l-Baha for children from the Baha'i Prayer Book page 33 and page 31-32.
Today I read a passage from a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi dated June 9, 1932 to an individual believer. Then I begin reading the first half of a long passage from the Kitab-I-Iqan by Baha'u'llah pages 3-15. I continue reading The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 49th and 50th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer by Abdu'l-Baha on pages 212-213.
Today I read some passages on Baha'i marriage beginning with The Marriage Tablet which is not scripture as it is unauthenticated. It was taken from a talk ascribed to the Master circa December 1918 and written down by Ahmad Sohrab. I also read some short passages from Selections from the Writings of Abdu'l-Baha page 117 and 118, Lights of Guidance by Abdu'l-Baha page 226, and a passage from Prescription for Living by Ruhiyyih Khanum pages 87-88. I continue our reading of The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 47th and 48th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer by Abdu'l-Baha in the Baha'i Prayer Book on pages 23-24.
Today I read three passages from Baha'i World Faith, pages 66-67 and page 175 from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, and page 366 from the Writings of Abdu'l-Baha. I also read a passage from Star of the West Volume VII page 171 titled "Hast thou Love?" from the diary of Mirza Ahmad Sokrab, June 9, 1914. I continue reading from The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah with the 45th and 46th Hidden Word from the Arabic. I close with a prayer from Prayers and Meditations by Baha'u'llah pages 56-57.
