Greg Jenner is joined by Professor Jonathan Morris and comedian Sophie Duker to learn all about the bittersweet history of coffee.Coffee is undoubtedly one of the most popular drinks worldwide, and we consume an estimated 95 million cups of the stuff everyday in the UK alone. But where does coffee come from, and when did we start enjoying its caffeinated effects? From its origins in medieval Ethiopia and Yemen, through the coffeehouses of the Middle East and Europe, to its central importance to soldiers during the American Civil War, this episode traces the complex history of our favourite beverage. Along the way, it explores the uses people have had for coffee over the years, in religious rituals, as a stimulant to intellectual exchange, and even as a medicine. We also debunk some of the myths that have been brewed up about coffee's history. Did the Pope really call it ‘the devil's brew'? Was it discovered by an Ethiopian goatherd? And did a Dutch man really have to smuggle coffee trees out of Yemen? Listen to find out! If you're a fan of delicious disputes over food, wild medical treatments from centuries past and murky historical myths, you'll love our episode on the history of coffee. If you want more from Sophie Duker, check out our episodes on Benedetta Carlini or the Chevalier de Saint-Georges. As she dives into the strict aesthetic lifestyle her experiences evolve to full-on visions including a marriage proposal from Christ himself. WHOA! Her visitations and eventual stigmata quickly raise her to leadership levels and she gains much notoriety, along with her Abbess title. But not all the nuns in the convent believe in her visions or her leadership choices, and Benedetta is accused of heresy and forced to face a series of investigations into the truth. BENEDETTA is sexy, shocking, funny, violent, deep, and ecstatic. It has all the fire of golden era Verhoeven. He's so good at intellectualizing while still appealing to your lizard brain - sensitive and sometimes damning theological critiques weave naturally in and out of scenes of bodacious babes sucking and fucking. BENEDETTA delightfully adapts the biography of a real lesbian nun, Benedetta Carlini, while obviously taking tons of artistic license with the story that is already partially legend anyway. The real Benedetta was also an abbess granted spiritual visions that were deemed controversial, leading to a church investigation into her sexual relationship with her fellow Sister Bartolomea Crivelli. Verhoeven's BENEDETTA uses this compelling story as a backdrop to meditate on such topics as the virtue of suffering, the horniness of religious restraint, and the corrupting nature of power and hierarchy. While many scenes in BENEDETTA would offend a certain kind of Christian - and in fact, the film did inspire protests - it manages to be a powerful celebration of religious devotion and ecstacy while simultaneously dealing organized religion a sharp critique.

On today's episode of our daily NYFF59 podcasts, NYFF Director of Programming Dennis Lim is joined by Paul Verhoeven, whose latest film, Benedetta, is a Main Slate selection of this year's festival and will be opening at the Film at Lincoln Center on December 3rd. Based on true events, Benedetta unearths the story of Benedetta Carlini, a 17th-century nun in Tuscany who believed she saw visions of Christ and engaged in a sexual relationship with a fellow sister at her abbey. Because this is a film by genre auteur par excellence Paul Verhoeven (whose movies include Robocop, Basic Instinct, and NYFF54 selection Elle), the result is anything but a reverent treatment of an odd footnote in Catholic European history. Forgoing the hallmarks of prestige cinema, this delirious, erotic, and violent melodrama is told with a boundless spirit for scandal, and unabashedly courts blasphemy as it unfolds its tale of religious hypocrisy. Wildly entertaining, and featuring standout performances from Virginie Efira as the title character and Charlotte Rampling as the stoic, conflicted Mother Abbess, Benedetta maintains both a feverish pitch and a fascinating ambiguity in its depiction of the miraculous and the mundane, the sacred and the profane.

This week, Max and Allison discuss two women who became larger than life only to meet unfortunate ends. The first, a drag queen who helped shape the modern queer movement, lived most of her life hand-to-mouth on the streets; The second, a 16th century nun, shot to fame through her visions and piety only to fall just as quickly after declaring herself an Empress: Sylvia Rivera and Benedetta Carlini. Then, in an all new Bitch Next Door, Allison talks to Roni Geva. Co-Creator and Producer of a web series called Ctrl Alt Delete.
