'He called out Bibi's bluff': Within days of Oct. 7, this hostage's father spoke out against Netanyahu's war

Early on, it was clear the Beinin-Atzili family was not a typical hostage family, filmmaker Brandon Kramer, director of the new award-winning documentary “Holding Liat” said on the Haaretz Podcast. After learning that his relatives, Liat and Aviv Atzili, had been kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 and held hostage by Hamas, and that Liat’s father and son were traveling to Washington, D.C. several weeks later with other Israeli-American hostage families to lobby on behalf of their loved ones, Kramer knew he had to document the visit. As he began to film what would become “Holding Liat” – which won Best Documentary upon its debut at the Berlinale Film Festival and is about to make its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival – Kramer noticed that their family’s experience “didn't fit neatly into any box.” Yehuda Beinin, Liat’s father, was openly calling for peace and reconciliation, and opposing the forceful military response the Israeli government was planning - from the start. At the same time, Kramer explains, “His grandson Netta – who had barely survived the attacks and was traumatized and very angry – and his other daughter, Tal, didn’t want to speak about politics at all. So within this one family, we saw a microcosm of the debates and fractures, and we felt we had a responsibility to try to make sense of this moment through this one family's lens.” Also speaking on the podcast, one of the film’s producers, Libby Lenkinski, noted that the authenticity of “Holding Liat” held it apart from the slew of October 7 documentaries designed with a political agenda that comprise “hour-and-a-half long visual op-eds” focused on making either a pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian case. At the same time, Yehuda, the film’s focus, “is a really great example of something that we see often on the left – a person warning about what might be coming and initially being thought of as alarmist or paranoid, and it turning out to be true.” When Yehuda was filmed in the first months of the war, warning that Netanyahu would pursue a brutal and endless war to serve a far-right political agenda, “I don’t think any of us could have imagined the kind of devastation that we would be seeing in Gaza, the endless killing and destruction. I think so many Israelis wanted to believe that this was necessary to bring back the hostages, and now it's just so clear that that was never the point. …Yehuda called out Bibi's bluff early on, and it turned out to be truer than we ever would have wanted to believe.” Subscribe to Haaretz.com for up-to-the-minute news and analysis from Israel in English. I'm calling it right now. Lesbian Space Princess is the film of the year. I saw it in a sold out auditorium at the beautiful art deco Piccadilly cinema in Adelaide with an Adelaide Film Festival audience that lapped up every laugh, every tear, and every splash of neon bright queer celebration on screen. Lesbian Space Princess is the animated feature debut of filmmakers Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, a collaborative force to be reckoned with, set to change the Australian film industry one bubblegum flavoured cel at a time. The film follows Saira (voiced brilliantly by the superb Shabana Azeez), the titular lesbian space princess who finds herself having to leave her sheltered planet in the wide galaxy to save her punk rock ex-girlfriend Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel) after she is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens (voiced by the Aunty Donna crew). Saira pilots a ship (voiced with joyous deadpan delivery by Richard Roxburgh, completing his one-two punch of career best performances alongside his turn in The Correspondent), encountering the delightful Willow (a scene stealing Gemma Chua-Tran), and the two head off in the galaxy to save Kiki. That plot synopsis barely scratches the surface of what is going on within one of the sharpest, funniest, queerest films to be produced in Australia. There is the Australian film industry before Lesbian Space Princess, and there is the Australian film industry after Lesbian Space Princess, and I can't wait to see what work this film inspires people to create. I'm still giddy from the ten minute standing ovation that took place on the opening night. You know us Aussies, we're not partial to standing ovations, let alone standing for anything (unless it's a queue), so to know we stood, clapped, cheered, and heaped deserving praise on this debut film is a strong enough statement as it is. That energy I'm putting forward lingers in the following interview with Leela, Emma, and Shabana (who joined us after a day of shooting her HBO series The Pitt, and after her film Birdeater took home Best Indie Film at the AACTAs). In this discussion, we talk about the origins of Lesbian Space Princess, what it means to create a narrative that everyone can relate to, the varied emotionality of the film, and a lot more. We close the chat with Emma telling us the impact of the film on relationships. This interview was recorded ahead of Lesbian Space Princess' world premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival where it is in competition for the Panorama Audience Award and the Teddy Award for LGBTQIA+ films. The version screened at the Adelaide Film Festival was a work in progress print. Lesbian Space Princess was awarded the full $10,000 from the Queer Screen Completion Fund. The Completion Fund recipients are determined by an independent jury. The following chat is one of the first pieces (of many) that the Curb will be putting up this year as we celebrate the year of Lesbian Space Princess. Two-time Emmy-nominated actress and producer Sydney Sweeney has become one of the most sought-after talents of her generation, captivating global audiences with her many buzz-worthy, critically acclaimed, and iconic roles. Sweeney can most recently be seen starring opposite Glen Powell in Will Gluck's R-rated romantic comedy ANYONE BUT YOU, which broke box office records for the 2023 holiday season. She also recently made her highly anticipated debut as ‘Julia Carpenter' (aka Spider Woman) in Sony's Marvel universe alongside Dakota Johnson with the release of MADAME WEB. Sweeney will next be seen starring in the psychological horror film IMMACULATE for Black Bear Pictures, which she developed alongside producer David Bernad, following their highly successful collaboration on WHITE LOTUS. Now streaming on MAX, Sweeney's film REALITY marked her international film debut at the 2023 Berlinale Film Festival with the film's world premiere, where she played former US Airforce Translator and whistleblower Reality Winner. She is currently in production filming an upcoming survival thriller ‘EDEN.' Directed by Ron Howard, Sweeney will star in this film alongside Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law. Sweeney recently started production on the Apple Original Films' thriller ECHO VALLEY where she will also star opposite Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson. As the standout character ‘Cassie' in HBO's EUPHORIA, Sweeney's exceptional work in Season 2 captured the attention of viewers, earning her a 2022 Emmy nomination for her performance in the category of “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.” Prior to the second season of EUPHORIA, Sydney's name was on everyone's lips due to her turn as the seemingly woke millennial ‘Olivia' who dished out side-eye and microaggressions every chance she had in HBO's THE WHITE LOTUS. The inception of Sweeney's production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, came from the desire to reclaim professional autonomy by identifying and giving wind to projects she finds interesting, challenging, and relevant. Partnering with Jonathan Davino in 2019, Fifty-Fifty Films continues to remain focused on building impactful projects that are inclusive and purposeful. Currently in development as starring vehicles are THE PLAYER'S TABLE with Fifth Season, THE REGISTRATION for Sony Pictures, based on Madison Lawson's novel, with Fuller Media and THE CARETAKER for Universal Pictures, alongside Michael Bay and Brad Fuller for Platinum Dunes.

We are approaching the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  This past week, the Berlinale Film Festival opened in Germany.  This attempt at normalcy in Europe is sort of like having a garden party happening while acknowledging that the house is on fire.  President Volodymir Zelensky of Ukraine was invited to give the opening remarks. He challenged his audience, asking them, "what side is (Western) culture on?"  This challenge brings a lot of questions.  Is Western Culture an entity that exists in a form that can bring about change?  Zelensky doesn't necessarily think so, but he believes it can serve as the means to inspire people to change.    What is culture really?  In the West, it can be argued that culture is not something that exists in a vacuum, it is a business decision, marketing assisted means of making money.    From Rhianna at the Superbowl to Banksy, doesn't such artists, hooked into the culture machine serve to influence people to purchase things?Does the artist exist as an agent of change?   Martin presents two individuals from previous European conflicts, who acted on an individual's decision to forego their art in order to serve as an agent of change.  One, the artist Mata Hari, was eventually scapegoated by the French as a German spy and executed.  The other, James Stewart, risked his life and career to serve in the US Army Air Force in World War 2.   In the larger sense, both artists didn't culturally make a dent.  But band enough artists together and perhaps change can come about. But culture in the world as a single entity doesn't exist, further complicating things.  Russia's culture and China's culture exists at the whim of their leaders.   Culture exists in other countries, too.   Does India's culture have the responsibility to tell their leaders that they are dealing in "Blood Oil" from Russia?  Or as a culture, do they feel that this is OK? Can cultures influence other cultures?  And can individuals change cultures?  Or is Zelensky right in implying that up to now, Western Culture has been trying to have it both ways with the War in Ukraine?  Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. She has developed frameworks of rituals and healing in performance work that often reveal the entangled colonial histories of migration at site-specific spaces to dismantle prejudices and organise accessible levels of consciousness through testimonial archives of local communities to build independant emancipatory tools for liberation, education, consciousness, intimacy and healing. The motivation to make the recording of the live performances which became the release ‘Live from Studio S2' came from the invitation from the Berlinale Film Festival. “I decided to rearrange some of my favourite songs, which I have been performing live for years. Recorded live and captured in the iconic Studio S2, one of the recording studios of Polish Radio in Warsaw. The hall is fully covered with light wood, which reminds me of other Radio Studios all around the world - like Funkhaus in Berlin for example. There is a kind of intimacy when playing the little piano in this huge and also very high venue.” — @Hania Rani “In the beginning of February 2021, I was asked to record a live set as a part of EFM sessions, which are the part of the Festival. I thought that bringing back my piano and equipment to the hall where I recorded my live session videos for my debut album 'Esja' would be a nice idea and the right cinematic choice. The iconic Studio S2 is one of the recording studios of Polish Radio in Warsaw. The hall is fully covered with light wood, which reminds me of other Radio Studios all around the world - like Funkhaus in Berlin. It felt very special to be in the hall where we recorded a video for "Glass", one of my most liked videoclips. There is a kind of intimacy when playing the little piano in this huge and also very high venue.” Video: Mateusz Miszczyński Sound recording: Agata Dankowska Mixing: Piotr Wieczorek   Team UNPLUGGED.

This week we breech the divides of social distancing and isolation by reaching out to Bassam Tariq, a Pakistani-American filmmaker whose latest project Mogul Mowgli, starring Riz Ahmed, recently premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival. In this conversation, Bassam and Imran examine how traces of religion, tradition, and history bleed together and form a voice for the South Asian diaspora. Though Bassam shares with us the difficulties of being a filmmaker with integrity, he also reminds us of our imperfection. We trip up and turn back to the One who is Perfect. This is the non-linear, vulnerable, and vibrant spiritual path of the artist. While the life of the artist can be a lonely at times, Bassam celebrates the cities and communities that support, challenge, and inform his art.Produced by: Imran Ali Malik and Zahra Parekh.More about Bassam Tariq: www.bassa.msSupport this podcast: patreon.com/submittter
