Abstract: To study processes related to weightlessness in ground-based cell biological research, a microgravity environment is typically simulated with a clinostat - a small laboratory device that rotates cell culture vessels with the aim to average-out the vector of gravitational forces. Here, we report that these rotational movements induce complex fluid motions in the cell culture vessel that can trigger unintended cellular responses. Specifically, we demonstrate that suppression of myotube formation by 2D-clino-rotation is not an effect of a theoretically assumed microgravity but instead is a consequence of fluid motion. Therefore, cell biological results from clino-rotation cannot be attributed to microgravity unless alternative explanations have been rigorously tested and ruled out. In this setting we consider the inclusion of at least two control experiments as mandatory, i) a static, non-rotating control, and ii) a control for fluid motion. Finally, we discuss strategies to minimize spurious fluid motion in clino-rotation experiments. Copy rights belong to original authors. Over the last quarter century, Josh Berwanger‘s work has taken many different forms. After his time in accomplished early aughts emo outfit The Anniversary was through, the Kansas-based songwriter dabbled in alt-country with The Only Children, ventured in the direction of indie rock with his Berwanger project and joined forces with members of The Get Up Kids and The Gadjits to form Radar State. Along the way, he even stepped completely away from music for seven years to coach girls high school basketball. Most recently, Berwanger has embarked on a “genre-blending” aural endeavor called Gemini Parks. With monthly song releases, some shows in the books and a Gemini Parks release planned for next year, Berwanger has a lot of modern-day happenings to talk about. He did just that when he spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas. Of course, their conversation also touched on early bands, the beginning of The Anniversary, memorable moments from that band, his years away from music, what brought him back to the stage and what's to come. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and Gemini Parks (“Up All Night”).

When Football Is Football is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sports' Yesteryear). EPISODE SUMMARY One of the most important innovations in the history of the National Football League occurred in February of 1936 when the NFL initiated its very first draft of collegiate players. It was a revolutionary concept; each team, beginning with the one having the worst record to the best from the previous season, would be able to secure the sole rights to negotiate with a specific player that the team selected........ Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/jay-berwanger (episode here). WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUND Each episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. Author Joe Ziemba will share a forgotten or lost story from one of the NFL's two oldest teams: The Bears and the Cardinals. Team championships, individual exploits, or long-buried items of interest from the earliest years of the NFL will be dusted off and resurrected for the listener. Not for the football faint-of-heart since these programs will document when the struggling Bears nearly went out of business or when Cardinals' players earned $15 a game and were proud of it! It's NFL history—with a twist!.

Tweet This episode we fire up the DeLorean and head back to 1936 to witness the first NFL draft. Times were different for the players and owners pre-draft era. Some say the NFL draft saved professional sports because it helped balance the leagues. Others say the birth of the NFL draft was a major turning point in the explosion of the NFL. The draft was the brainchild of the first great NFL Commissioner and former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. You can learn more about him in the Bert Bell episode. For now, it's time to take you back to that first NFL draft, and I'll clue you into a secret. There's a major twist at the end. So, strap on your seat belt, and let’s get ready to take this baby up to 88mph. On this week's Eight One Sixty, Chris chats with the band Mess, as they get ready to celebrate the release of their full-length debut, "Learning How To Talk." They'll talk about their big show on Saturday, March 30 at The Rino, preview some music from the new album and hear some stories about it. After that, we hear from two musicians who used to call KC home and are coming back for gigs — Supa Flowa tonight at The Encore at Uptown Theater and Payge Turner on Thursday at The Rino. We hear a new song from DeMaur, who is playing tonight at The Rino. We also hear the new single from Berwanger — it's so catch you'll be humming the chorus all night after you hear it. And if we have time, we'll throw in a little Metric as Emily Haines brings her band to The Truman on Thursday.
With an infectious personality and a flashy style behind the drums, Jon Phillip has laid down beats for nearly a dozen different bands since he first picked up the sticks in the early '90s. Phillip's first bands — Tralfez and Spank Child — were based in the rural town of Grafton, Wisconsin, where he grew up. He then joined the up-and-coming power-pop group the Benjamins, who would go on to sign with Drive-Thru Records and tour the country several times over. Following the Benjamins, Phillip briefly played in the Nice Outfit before forming the roots rock band the Obsoletes with Justin Perkins and Tim Schweiger, who previously played together in Yesterday's Kids. Phillip went on to drum for the alt-country band Limbeck, of Doghouse Records. And the prolific drummer has since played with a string of other nationally known acts, including Berwanger, the Wildbirds, Screeching Weasel, Paul Collins Beat, Trapper Schoepp and Tommy Stinson. Stinson, of course, is known for being a member of both the Replacements and Guns & Roses. Phillip is now fronting the punk group Mini Meltdowns, which features Scott Schoenbeck (Promise Ring, Dashboard Confessional and Rx Drugs) on bass. Phillip also runs Good Land Records, an independent record label, from his Nashville home.
JOSH BERWANGER and BRIAN KLEIN from the KC rock band BERWANGER stop by the T3 studios to review the classic, old school, downtown Overland Park Taco veteran, TORREADOR! Dave and his guests discuss the latest Star Wars films, Corey Feldman, Josh and Brian's amazing toy collections and they check the latest stories in Taco News! Taco Ticker topics this week: Bogus Taco Crawls and Did you go get your Free Doritos Locos Tacos? We also ask the question: "Who is the most Famous Kansas Citian of All Time?" and "Where would you make the Street Car Go?" And "Is A Taco a Sandwich?" We talk tacos, Star Wars, a little bit more about Tacos, then a little more Star Wars and then back to tacos. We also play a cut off the latest Berwanger album! Check out Berwanger LIVE in Concert on Thursday July 5th at THE RINO!

Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago Maroons was honored by the Downtown Athletic Club as the best collegiate football player east of the Mississippi for the 1935 season, which makes him stand as the very first Heisman Trophy winner. Although this would seem to place Berwanger in a line with subsequent winners and NFL legends, really Berwanger stands out to modern eyes for the difference between his game and the modern game. Berwanger didn't even, technically, win the Heisman, as the trophy only was named after John Heisman after his death the next year. Berwanger was known as the "one man football team" for being not just a capable runner at halfback, but also a passer, kicker, punter, and notable defensive player. Berwanger played before face masks, racial integration, or even a significant pro football culture. Although he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the first selection in the first NFL draft, Berwanger never played in the NFL, even after being traded to the Bears. Instead, going into business and seeking to compete in the decathlon in the Olympics, Berwanger would end his football career with winning the Downtown Athletic Club's honor.
