Keepin It Real w/Caramel had a fun and entertaining conversation with SJ Hazim. SJ is a very outgoing and passionate person. He loves what he does for people, and he gives out great energy in the world. He shines with positivity on everyone he meets. SJ Hazim is the man behind the writing and production for the 70th Brown vs. Board compilation song “Levitate”, which includes over 20 talents from the Topeka, KS area. Picture the style of “We Are The World”. Topeka, KS played a crucial role as one of the key locations where the Brown vs. Board cases originated. African American families, such as Oliver Brown, had a daughter who was denied enrollment in a nearby white school. Over time, the Brown vs. Board decision became a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement, which helped lead to further legal and social changes for equality. In 1954, the case of Brown vs. Board of Education was a landmark in the Supreme Court ruling that declared the racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This was considered one of their most celebrated victories in a long time. To this day, it remains one of the most defining moments in US history. Brown vs. Board was a coordinated group of five lawsuits against school districts in Kansas, South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Some of those featured on the song are Brendon Elliott, a violinist and Julliard graduate who has earned distinction through his performances with the New York Philharmonic and as a guest soloist with the Virginia and Richmond Symphony Orchestras. -Bizzy gained recognition in the hip-hop community as he was featured on Tech N9ne's track “Erbody But Me” on the 2016 album. This was a pivotal moment for Bizzy and helped him become a figure in the midwest rap scene. - Stik Figa is a Topeka, KS based rapper who blends a southern style with a midwest influence. His notable accomplishments include collaborations with Mello Music Group and appearances on Shade 45. -Roger Ortega is a spotify-verified and Grammy Voting R&B/Pop Artist. Roger has had the opportunity to open for artists such as Jay Z, Color Me Badd, Aaron Carter, Otown and DJ Pauly D to name a few. His successes include his first album “RnBPoPWrtyr” reaching #62 on the itunes chart and his second album “The Lottery” reaching #8. - Lamont Jackson is a Topeka, KS police officer with a love for music. His singing and songwriting talents have given him the ability to showcase his talents through performances and karaoke nights. Most recently, his enthusiasm for music led to viral fame with a “police car karaoke video” that caught the attention of Kelly Clarkson, and he was invited as a guest on her show. This is just the start for SJ, in May 2024 he will be releasing his album “Syncronicty in Motion” as well as his Hip Hop Play “Rhythm of Insight: A Hip Hop Odyssey in Verse”, featuring 10 classic hip hop beats with his own lyrics as a 50 years of Hip Hip Salute which will have multiple volumes. SJ can also be heard on Roger Ortegas “Back To Kansas (Top City Remix)”. Known as a staple in Topeka, KS, he is ready to let the rest of the world know who he is. Now that we've been around for a number of years, we've had the chance to interact with rappers and producers at various stages of their careers. Sometimes we catch people on the ascent, still forging their legacy, and sometimes we speak to legends whose time influencing the culture is likely behind them. And sometimes, we engage with early-career artists right as they begin to level up and make a name for themselves to a wider audience. We have seen this happen with friends of the program like Defcee and Fatboi Sharif, and this week we have a conversation with rapper NAHreally and producer The Expert, who feel like they are on the verge of a similar breakthrough. They are promoting their new collaborative album Blip! out now on Rucksack Records. For NAH, this is his first release on vinyl, his first foray into securing features from other indie artists he admires, and just a lot of firsts in general. For producer The Expert, this is the latest in a line of collab albums, including recent tomes with Stik Figa and Jermicide, where he has consistently displayed a knack for psych-tinged knocking beats. In the bookending segments, DBRP hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc (Demone Carter is on assignment his week) discuss new music, an upcoming book project they are both working on, and the concept of "Regular Guy Rap" and what makes an artist relatable in the modern world of hip-hop. This episode was mixed by Taylor Weng. Theme song by Cutso and DEM ONE. Announcements by Don Newkirk. Dad Bod Rap Pod is brought to you by Stony Island Audio. Then we discuss their album pick for this episode - Common's sixth studio album “Be”. You can stream and purchase “Ritual” here: https://theexpert.bandcamp.com/album/ritual

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (2:29). Styles of music such as jazz, R&B, soul, and funk, have all been inseparable elements in the fabric of hip-hop production since its inception. One particular form of music that has not played nearly as much of a significant role though, is rock music. That brings us to the subject of today's episode, Ritual, an album by Topeka Kansas rapper Stik Figa, and producer The Expert based in Dublin, Ireland, who's production features a healthy dose of psychedelic rock samples that are executed brilliantly. The Expert puts those sounds into a blender with traditional golden-age and jazz sounds that rap purists will surely appreciate. The sound, however, is not all that makes Ritual notable since it is a project that may have ended up being the last album hip-hop veteran Stik Figa would ever create. To learn more about Ritual, Stik Figa and The Expert join the show to dive deep into how this album was made, as the next instalment of the Album Alchemy series. Stik Figa and The Expert created Ritual without ever even seeing each other's faces (2:46). The collaborative process used for Ritual (9:31). Ritual was originally supposed to be Stik Figa's last album (18:33). The musical landscape of Ritual (24:04). What drew Stik towards these unconventional beats (34:52). The challenge of rapping over The Expert's beats (39:36). Key themes in Ritual (43:04). Ritual's noteworthy features (49:53). Upcoming work to expect from Stik Figa and The Expert (57:53). Dublin producer The Expert aka Cian Galvin was one half of Messiah J and the Expert and some 15 years on since they called it a day, is still releasing top-quality albums. In 2022 he released The Overview Effect with US rapper Jermicide and this Friday releases Ritual with another US rapper, Stik Figa. We talk about his journey from the late 90s, starting out with Creative Control, on through the career of Messiah J and the Expert, how close they got to making it, and then discuss his 'second act', constantly released beat and mixtapes and now working with a series of rappers on some brilliant records. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Stik Figa & Rob Viktum interview session! Now we’ve had both of these gentlemen on the show over the past couple of years - Stik when he dropped “Central Standard Time” and Rob when he launched his sound library company, Kersey & Castle. When we found out these two forces of nature had collided on a full length project, we had to be a part of rolling it out for the people. We World Premiered “Homesick” feat. Ty Farris on Episode 200, and this week on Episode 202 we featured three more World Exclusives from their upcoming full length “All Gods Dangers”. We build with Stik & Rob on how the project came together, Stik’s move to the Lonestar state that really got the project moving and why this is his most personal project to date lyrically. Rob fills us in on the latest with Kersey & Castle - including a huge placement on the upcoming Ill Bill & Stu Bangas album, his work on Vinnie Paz’s “The Bone Collector” last fall and what else he has cued up for 2019. If that isn’t enough - Meeks and Stik talking that Memphis sh*t throughout the interview is just pure gold. There’s a lot more inside Vangardians - but that doesn’t surprised you, does it? Sure it doesn’t - so go ahead and press play, cop “All Gods Dangers” when it drops this Fri, March 22 and follow your guys Meeks & Doe on your favorite podcast platform ‘cause we’re always serving up that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live March 17, 2018 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 200! Unbelievable - 4 years and 2 months later, we’re at Episode 200 of our weekly mix show. On top of that, we’re delivering our 164th interview session this week on Thursday with Rochester’s own 38 Spesh. That’s 364 episodes of nothing but that RAW, week after week since January 1, 2015! All that said - it was nothing but a party for Ep200 - our good friends DJ Pocket & J57 came by to celebrate with us as we dropped NOTHING BUT WORLD EXCLUSIVES FOR THE ENTIRE EPISODE - save for one joint we HAD to rock from the new Muggs & Eto project that dropped last week. Big up to Koop, the 5th Beatle of Southern Vangard Radio, for putting the battery in Doe’s back to reach out for exclusives a mere SIX HOURS before the show started. Stik Figa (@Stik_Figa) has traveled from being one of Topeka's most cherished rappers to joining the star-studded roster at indie hip-hop label Mello Music Group. In this interview we discuss his two full-length albums he's released on MMG, some Topeka hip-hop history, his views on hip-hop tradition and elitism, and some recent album reviews he's posted on YouTube. We cut it a little short so he could get to the studio, so expect a follow-up sometime in the future. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Stik Figa interview session! While Stik currently hails from Topeka, KS and certainly stakes a claim there - make no mistake - MEMPHIS was in the house for our interview session this week. We kick things off by hearing about Stik’s Kentucky & Tennessee roots, how Stik and Meeks had mutual friends & acquaintances in Memphis but never got to connect until now and how his high school English teacher encouraged his writing and eventually pushed him to pick up the mic. Stik breaks down his meeting and collaborating with Oddisee, connecting with Mello Music Group and why he decided to double down on the music with his latest LP, “Central Standard Time.” You know we always go down a rabbit hole or three during these interviews, and we fall in a good one when Meeks & Stik get into some real deal BBQ talk. Of course there’s lots more inside folks, so go cop “Central Standard Time” now and push play on what is always that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #dj #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #MEMPHIS #TOPEKA #WORLDWIDE Recorded live February 12, 2017 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks @beatlabusa

BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 102! A nasty stomach bug that’s been making its rounds throughout the ATL metro hit Doe’s house last week, so we had to park Ep 102 until everyone was healthy again. Thankfully we had the Best of 2016 mix from Jon’s appearance on WREK 91.1 Techniques Radio the prior week, so we still ended up delivering a silly mix last week in lieu of our absence. This week finds Meeks and Doe back on that same ole bullsh*t - tons of new joints, and a little bit longer show than usual due to no interview this week.
