This week’s episode is a little peek into the day to day picks I make to get through my day. A few old favorites (ok, quite a few), some fantastic discoveries at the used record store, and some fabulous new vinyl reissues. The main highlight this week is the brand new reissue of Twin/Tone’s Big Hits of Mid-America, Vol. 3. Long out of print, Back Groove Records has just put out a limited edition set remastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery  Room Mastering, Milwaukee, WI with vinyl mastering by Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl, Memphis, TN. This is one of the great landmarks of late 70s Minneapolis underground rock. As for this week’s edition of the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I’ve got a recent discovery by The Main Grains. Led by former Wildheart bassist Danny McCormack, the track can be found on their Don’t Believe Everything You Think EP. Like I do every week, however, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me! For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

My guest today is Justin Perkins a mastering engineer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin who has worked on remastering projects for The Replacements, En Vogue, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and mastering projects for Michael Franti &  Spearhead, Tommy Stinson, The Gaslight Anthem, Smoking Popes,  Anberlin, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, and thousands of other independent bands and artists around the world.  Before transitioning to mastering full-time he also spent time at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison Wisconsin recording and mixing a  number of projects, and has been working full-time in the audio field for nearly 20 years. His studio Mystery Room Mastering has been in business since 2009.  Growing up and playing in bands in the midwest is what helped  Justin formulate a career in audio and ultimately led to playing bass for a time in the band Screeching Weasel, as well as playing bass for Tommy Stinson's solo shows, and the relaunch of Tommy Stinson's post-Replacements band called Bash & Pop who released a new album in 2017 on Fat Possum Records and performed on The Late  Show with Stephen Colbert.  Aside from mastering tons of singles, EPs, and albums, Justin also masters nearly all the content for The License Lab which is a library music company based in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and recently started doing a monthly livestream for Steinberg Media to help both new and current users of WaveLab Pro get a better understanding of how to use it.  Justin has also written a number of articles for the popular website  The Pro Audio Files on the topic of mastering, preparing for mastering,  and an overview of what types of master files you may need for various release formats. Cold Weather Kids, based out of Los Angeles, CA, began as a passion project between Adam Allison and Ryan Scottie. The two had met while attending college in Chicago in the early 2010s and instantly formed a lifelong friendship. That friendship would take them to Los Angeles in 2016 where Adam would begin working in recording at Revolution 9 Studios.
It was at Rev 9 Recording where Adam met Erik Williams, who became the drummer after previous projects dissolved.
The name Cold Weather Kids was inspired by the three upbringings of the members, as all three grew up in places with a cold climate: Michigan, Wisconsin, and Colorado. Following their debut EP "Songs We Can't Finish" which dropped August of 2020, the band followed up by raising the bar with "Quarantunes" a three song EP made from the time spent inside working remotely due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The EP was written and recorded remotely and then sent to producer Nick Radovanovic (Grandson, Mister Wives, Stand Atlantic) for that mixing magic that only he can deliver. The final touch provided by Justin Perkins on mastering makes Quarantunes a small but powerful package of new pop punk set to hit ears this holiday 2020 If there are bands that you would like to hear on the show or if you’re a band that would like to join me for an interview, please reach out to me at podcast@beyondradentertainment.com. Perkins owns and operates Mystery Room Mastering, a Milwaukee-based business that masters a wide variety of Wisconsin (and Midwestern) releases, as well as albums from the likes of The Replacements, Bash & Pop, The Mr. T Experience, and many other acts from all around the world. But long before he was working on records for some outstanding bands, he was in a few of his own amazing musical projects. Recently, Perkins allowed My First Band host Tyler Maas into his basement studio (a.k.a. "Mystery Room East") for a long and informative discussion about the interesting and nuanced field of mastering, as well as his decades of experience on-stage playing in bands like Yesterday's Kids, Obsoletes, and stints with Screeching Weasel, Tommy Stinson's Bash & Pop project, and many other notable outfits. Along the way, Perkins talked about forming a band with his babysitter and his time working at the legendary (and now-closed) Smart Studios in Madison. Meanwhile, Maas reminisced about being a huge Yesterday's Kids fan in high school. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and Bradford 2020: A Charity Calendar. With an infectious personality and a flashy style behind the drums, Jon Phillip has laid down beats for nearly a dozen different bands since he first picked up the sticks in the early '90s. Phillip's first bands — Tralfez and Spank Child — were based in the rural town of Grafton, Wisconsin, where he grew up. He then joined the up-and-coming power-pop group the Benjamins, who would go on to sign with Drive-Thru Records and tour the country several times over. Following the Benjamins, Phillip briefly played in the Nice Outfit before forming the roots rock band the Obsoletes with Justin Perkins and Tim Schweiger, who previously played together in Yesterday's Kids. Phillip went on to drum for the alt-country band Limbeck, of Doghouse Records. And the prolific drummer has since played with a string of other nationally known acts, including Berwanger, the Wildbirds, Screeching Weasel, Paul Collins Beat, Trapper Schoepp and Tommy Stinson. Stinson, of course, is known for being a member of both the Replacements and Guns & Roses.     Phillip is now fronting the punk group Mini Meltdowns, which features Scott Schoenbeck (Promise Ring, Dashboard Confessional and Rx Drugs) on bass. Phillip also runs Good Land Records, an independent record label, from his Nashville home.

Inspiring natural brands align with worthy causes. Mission-based causes are in their DNA. Care2 amplifies their message while being social warriors for good. Today's story comes from an entrepreneur that tried a lot of different things before successfully getting his brand on shelves and in the public eye, while becoming a social warrior for good. At the heart of his message, you hear him talk about perseverance, about how you've got to continually work hard, and that a large part of your journey requires you to talk to a lot of different customers to get your product in front of live customers and talk to them and sample things and ask them, "What do you like? What do you like better?"  His story is the ultimate rags to riches entrepreneurial story. When I use the term riches here, I'm talking about the richness of having a successful brand, of being able to accomplish what few do, to be able to come up with a creative solution, snacking solution that customers love, that they evangelize. That to me is the definition of success in this industry. As my guest shares, this is where you begin the customer journey. This is where you need to put all your focus on first, because customers will reward you if you provide a solution that they're looking for that meets their needs.  Today's story is about a young brand that started out with really no focus, no plan, and yet he was able to turn his determination into a successful brand, and in the process became a social warrior for good. Today's guest is Justin Perkins of OLOMOMO and Care2.  What's fascinating about Justin's story is that it resonates with so many of us that have an entrepreneurial spirit. Despite all the challenges that he ran into, Justin never gave up. Justin shares with us today his story about how he was able to successfully build a brand and in the process, he was able to successfully connect consumers to important causes.  As a business owner, he talks about the strategies and the challenges that he ran into in terms of getting his product on shelves, and then he talks about how he transitioned his product to an online marketplace and how digital marketing strategy helped him get his products in the hands of more consumers. In addition, Justin shares with us how he became a social warrior for good and how Care2 is impacting a lot of lives, how to improve the way we communicate social change and social justice through social media and through email marketing, the power of a solid digital marketing strategy.  I'm excited to introduce you to Justin Perkins. Here he is. Hi Justin. Thank you for coming on today. Before we get started, I'd like to learn a little bit more about you, how you started, and what took you on this journey from entrepreneur to social warrior. Working Class Audio #156 with Justin Perkins!!! Justin Perkins has been recording music since his mid-teens. It all started  in his father’s basement then progressed to recording studios around the state of Wisconsin including the renowned Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin before relocating to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he now has his own mastering studio called Mystery Room Mastering. Justin's  clients include Tommy Stinson, The Replacements, The Figgs, The Gaslight Anthem, Daryl Stuermer, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, The Smoking Popes, Limbeck, Miles Nielsen, and Tenement. Justin also recently mixed a new documentary about the legendary 90’s band Jawbreaker called “Don’t Break Down”. Outside of the studioJustin has  played bass in some of his own bands as well as with the newly reformed Bash & Pop, Tommy Stinson, Paul Collins Beat, Cory Chisel and a few others. About this Interview: Every time I post  about a new WCA show on Twitter there was always one guy who liked it, shared it or commented on it and that was Justin. Naturally I wanted to know who Justin Perkins was and why he was always liking the show so one day I visited his website Mystery Room Mastering and it was then I fully understood just how bad ass this guy was plus I was just blown away at the thorough nature of his website. Justin had reached out before to invite me to a Bash and Pop show  he was playing in San Francisco (I was unable to go) so I wasn't completely unaware of of his background but I had to talk to him! So after reaching out, scheduling and conducting my interview I had a whole new appreciation for Justin. We chat about his journey and his website and the usual WCA topics (clients, business, work/life balance, etc...).  -Enjoy! Matt

Founding Story of a Change Maker   Introducing Justin Perkins The universe works in amazing ways.  By being observant and using your intuition the path of your life can become an amazing and impactful adventure.  One person that has followed such a path is Justin Perkins.  Justin is a native of Boulder, Colorado and is the senior director of brand engagement and business development with Care2.com, as well as the founder and president of the Olomomo Nut Company. Care2 was one of the first “social good” websites to emerge back in 1998 with 30 million members and has petitions signed by hundreds of millions of people.  Olomomo was a hobby business Justin started back in 2008 that is now getting national distribution throughout natural grocery stores in the United States and soon Canada.  Both companies are certified B Corps. Justin's passion for social impact was sparked by a trip to Guatemala when he was a teenager.  It was a big shock for him to see how different the world was from mountainous paradise of Boulder.  Seeing how the rest of the world lived prompted his curiosity, and brought on questions like, “what does it all mean?”  His curiosity took him to Brazil to study international development and to South Africa for several months where he had a life-changing experience with a man named Billy that led him on a path to creating a non-profit.  This experience was so deeply impactful for Justin that he new he had to pursue something similar in his career path; only in such a way that he could also make a buck as well. Tune into this episode of the Boiling Point to see how openness to new experiences and serendipity can open a path to a life full of meaning and passion.   In this episode Justin fills us in on the great things happening with Care2.com and Olomomo. Greg and Dave are mesmerized by Justin's entrepreneurial origin story. Justin tells us about his friend Billy and how a chance meeting at a guitar store in Cape Town, South Africa changed his life forever. We hear how Care2 is taking on issues from Bill Cosby to corporate slavery. Justin explains how Care2 assists socially responsible companies as well as non-profits. Dave believes it is remarkable how Justin uses his intuition and how his life seems like a “choose your own adventure” book. Dave also comments on Justin's curiosity for the world and how one half hour is not nearly enough to get the whole story. Greg sees how adventurers, artists, and entrepreneurs are all the same type of people.    Links - Care2.com - Olomomo Nut Company - Olomomo on Twitter - Care2 on Twitter - Justin's email (Care2) - Justin's email (Olomomo   Learn more about your ad choices.
