Send us a textEpisode 013 Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Tom Scott joins the Aerophone Academy to share his extraordinary musical journey from clarinet player to pioneering wind controller artist. With 13 Grammy nominations, 3 Grammy awards, and appearances on over 2,000 recordings, Scott's unmistakable sound has defined popular music across multiple decades.Scott takes us through his remarkable career path, beginning with his early musical influences from his father, a music director at NBC Radio during World War II. His professional journey started at just 14 years old, playing $15 gigs at country clubs – experiences that taught him valuable lessons about serving the music rather than his ego. "Don't try to insert your own personal opinion about how you feel about a certain tune. Just play the damn thing with as much feeling as you can muster."The conversation explores Scott's groundbreaking work with the Lyricon, the world's first commercially available wind synthesizer. We hear fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about his iconic wind controller solos on hits like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," Captain & Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time," Dan Fogelberg's "Heart Hotels," and Steely Dan's "Peg." These recordings revolutionized how electronic instruments could be integrated into popular music, bringing unprecedented expressiveness to synthesized sounds.Scott's masterful horn arrangements for Steely Dan's "Aja" album receive special attention, revealing his sophisticated approach to orchestration. "I'm going to write this like it's an Oliver Nelson arrangement," he explains, describing how he transformed simple chord structures into rich, complex voicings that enhanced these iconic recordings.Whether discussing his evolution through different wind controller technologies or sharing wisdom about musical restraint ("less is more very often"), Scott's insights offer invaluable perspectives for musicians at every level. This conversation celebrates not just technological innovation but the enduring importance of musicality in an increasingly electronic landscape.Subscribe now and join us next episode for part two of our conversation with this legendary musical innovator! If you'd like to send us a question for an upcoming episode, please email us at info@aerophoneacademy.comOr leave us a voice message that we can include in the podcast here. For more information about Matt, visit www.patchmanmusic.comFor great Aerophone courses, visit www.isax.academy

Meet Michael Leonard - the creator of Wicked Smart Golf, a +2 handicap, and mental golf coach. He uses his five-pillar approach to help players shoot lower scores and play more consistently... without swing changes. In today's episode, you'll learn: The keye elements to focus on changing to upgrade your identity The power of consistency - and how to cultivate it The importance of slowing down to regain focus after mistakes How less is more in practice and preparation for tournaments The role of mindset in developing consistency and breaking 80 Actionable strategies for building effective post-round reflections Why mental and physical self-care off the course impacts on-course performance Get your pencils ready and start listening. Watch him on YouTube. Purchase “Wicked Smart Golf” on Amazon. Subscribe to the Wicked Smart Golf Podcast. Work with Michael. Key Takeaways: The mental game's primary goal is to reduce stress, as stress disrupts motor patterns and prevents you from swinging your best on the course. A growth mindset is critical for improving in golf; believing that improvement is possible fuels the effort needed to achieve your goals. Effective practice involves intention and structure—prioritizing deliberate, focused sessions over marathon practice that leads to burnout. Consistency in effort, even with small, incremental steps, is the foundation for long-term progress in golf and life. Managing your expectations with data-driven insights (e.g., realistic fairway hit percentages) helps avoid frustration and enhances performance. Pre- and post-shot routines, along with slowing down after mistakes, are essential tools for bouncing back from blow-up holes and staying composed. The golfer you are on the course is deeply connected to the human being you are off it—prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional well-being will elevate your performance. Key Quotes: "The whole goal of the mental game is stress is coming—it's going to happen. No matter how good you get, you're going to hit bad shots. The key is figuring out how to calm down and get back to your process as fast as you can." "You have to have a growth mindset—if you don't think you can improve, you won't. But if you believe someone else did it, then you can too." "Do different to get different. If you keep practicing the same way, going through the same motions, and expecting better results, you'll stay stuck. Challenge yourself to do what others aren't willing to do." "Your swing is already there. It's not going to change the day before a tournament. Sometimes the best preparation is resting, eating well, and showing up with a clear and focused mind." "Consistency beats everything. Even if it's a mediocre practice or an okay workout, you're still showing up. Over time, that builds belief and creates real progress." "Having the right expectations is everything. If you think you'll hit every fairway or make every putt, you're setting yourself up for frustration. Focus on playing your best with what you have that day." "You can't separate the golfer from the human being. How you care for yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally off the course directly impacts how you perform on the course." Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. What if the secret to conquering chaos, leading with confidence, and transforming stress into ease was as simple as your next breath? This week on the podcast, I sat down with breathwork expert Samantha Skelly to uncover the transformative power of intentional breathing. As the Founder of Pause Breathwork, Samantha Skelly is on a mission to help others unlock their infinite potential though breathwork. And her next big focus is making breathwork accessible & affordable to humanity, worldwide. From hilariously relatable mishaps (like sending a 10-year-old email to thousands) to life-changing strategies for managing energy and embracing joy, Samantha shared tools that could shift how we approach work, leadership, and even self-healing. Here were some of my favorite topics that we covered in the episode: 1. Managing Emotions Through Breathwork Samantha introduces the concept of consciously choosing your breath pattern to influence how you feel. Instead of letting anxiety take control, she suggests asking yourself what you want to feel, like confidence or clarity, and then adjusting your breath accordingly. By using deep, intentional breaths, you can activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” state), helping you feel grounded, even in high-stress moments. Btw, if you're looking for another breathwork expert on the pod, I think you'll love this one with Erin Telford: The Art of Breathwork: Mastering Self-Love and Living Fully with Erin Telford 2. Real-Life Example of Breathwork Samantha recounts an intense experience right before recording this episode, where an old, out-of-date email was accidentally sent to her entire mailing list. She describes feeling an initial surge of rage, then using breathwork to regain her composure and approach the situation with clarity. By taking two deep breaths and extending the exhale, she shifted from a “fight-or-flight” response to a calmer, problem-solving mindset. 3. Shifting Mindsets from Stress to Ease I reflect on my own experience with stress in building my company, improve it!, sharing how I used to view stress as a badge of hard work. In response, Samantha offers a framework called LIFE: Lucrative, Impactful, Fun, and Easy. She encourages business owners to allow success to feel easy and fulfilling instead of always hard-earned, emphasizing the importance of self-love and creating a business model that sustains rather than drains energy. For all things breathwork and how to start incorporating it into your daily routine (and why you should!), listen to the full episode. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Robbie Bent. In an effort to affect positive change and address the problem of loneliness and the detrimental effects it has on our individual and collective health, Robbie built a platform that includes physical spaces, a mobile app, a concert tour and a global community. Othership is a digital product to shift your state whenever and wherever you are. Robbie's app consists of over 250 guided breathwork classes to harness the power of the breath and build promoting habits. A transformative tool that makes up-regulating, down-regulating, and everything in between easeful, effective, and fun. He also goes on tour with live musical breathwork performances, sort of like a Cirque Du Soleil journey inward. In this episode, Robbie speaks about his rock bottom and what he had to do to turn his life around. He talks about the importance of meditation and what it's like to meditate for ten hours a day for ten days. Then, Robbie dives into breathwork and how breathing can completely change your state. If you're looking for a free and easy biohack, breathing can be a simple way to improve your health. Tune in as we chat about Othership, how to digest your food better, and the reason you should conquer your fears. [00:35] How Robbie Bent Got To Where He Is Now At 28, Robbie had been working for four years on a startup. One hundred people were working for him, his parents and friends had invested millions of dollars, and his entire income was tied up. The company failed, and Robbie had to fire one hundred people. Robbie sold his car, moved out of his apartment, and moved back in with his parents. Plus, Robbie was struggling with addiction. After reading The 4-hour Workweek, Robbie turned his life around. Get The 4-hour Workweek here: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Workweek-Escape-Live-Anywhere/dp/0307465357/benazadi-20 [08:00] What It Is Like To Meditate Ten Hours A Day For Ten Days It doesn't really matter how much you've been practicing; the difficulty of meditating for ten hours is still the same. After the first few days, you start to ease into the routine. We are always turned on, and we are never bored. How often are you just sitting? Almost never. So, meditating is a nice way to interrupt your routine. [10:55] How Breath-Control Can Change Your State and Heart Rate The breath controls our autonomic nervous system. When you're naturally calm, you will breathe slower. You can actually use your breath to trigger your state. If you need energy in the morning, try sympathetic breathing. Parasympathetic breathing will help you relax. The best way to get into the parasympathetic nervous system is by lengthening the exhale and including breath retention. A big breath in will increase the heart rate and energy. If you are nervous, you need long and slow exhales. [18:00] All About Othership And Finding Peak Experiences A peak experience can happen through breathwork. Othership will help shift your state and quiet the thinking mind. During Covid, Robbie created fear release sessions. The app was created to help people who are struggling with meditation. Plus, there's a physical space where Robbie has created a community to solve the loneliness pandemic. [23:25] How Doing Breathwork Can Help You Digest Food Better When you do slow breathing, you're triggering the parasympathetic state. You will be sending blood flow from the brain and muscles to the organs. That way, you are preparing your body for digestion. Also, eat without looking at your phone. The best thing you can do is be aware while you're eating. [26:30] Why You Should Practice Breathwork Before Going To Sleep If you eat something acidic before bed, it can affect sleep. Your body needs to regulate its pH balance. As a result, it starts over breathing This can cause dehydration in the evening. If you wake up with a dry mouth, you are mouth breathing. Something you can try is mouth tape. Meditation and breathwork before bed can help with inflammation, breathing patterns, sleep, and dehydration. [29:45] How Breathing Can Replace Caffeine and Increase Blood Flow The “up” section in Othership is creating a fight or flight response. This type of breathwork will send blood flow to the brain. Plus, it will help you get prepared and increase alertness. Breathing is about shifting your state, whereas meditation is about focus and awareness of your thoughts and emotions. You can shift your state with breathing. Think about breathing if you want to reduce your caffeine intake. [33:40] What Robbie Does To Conquer His Fears The more fearful situations you put yourself through, the more your tolerance will increase. Many people are fearful of rejection, so they don't try. The more you are comfortable with fear, the more you will be willing to try. Get comfortable with discomfort to find what is available to you in life. AND MUCH MORE! That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem "Stress is your brain and body preparing you to do something effortful." Dr. Alex Auerbach “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition, a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Your breath holds the profound ability to act as a mirror for your mental, emotional and energetic self. I'd even go as far as to say how you breathe is who you are as a person in any given moment. Your breath is a powerful tool within you--your life force. It's the breath you received from God when you came into this world. In this episode I talk briefly about the science of your breath and it's intended purpose for living, as well as how it impacts not only your physical, but also your mental, emotional and energetic self. I introduce you to the Maya Kosha Model, which is the yogic model that represents the path to end suffering through the layers or illusory sheaths that make up who we are as humans.Awareness, like with all things is the first step when it comes to breathing or using breath control to change the way you're feeling at any given time. I'll talk you through some simple steps to become aware of your breath and give you a couple breath practices you can use today to begin to use breath as a tool to calm your nervous system.Grab the full show notes and resources at www.cairnyogawellness.com/podcast59 and subscribe and listen wherever you catch your podcasts:
