The Canadian band's first Australian tour, back in the early 90s, was met with poor attendance as they were relatively unknown at the time. “When we played our first tour in Australia, we were promoting our very first record, Ghosts That Haunt Me. We had a hit in Canada, but hardly anyone knew us there,” Brad recalls. However, the situation has drastically changed, and this time, with a larger fan base, the band is eager for a more successful reception.Reflecting on the impact of God Shuffled His Feet, the album that defined the band's career, Brad shares his pride. “It means a lot to me that God Shuffled His Feet holds such a special place in people's hearts after 30 years,” he says. The album, featuring iconic tracks like Superman's Song, still resonates with fans around the world. The band's success skyrocketed early on, with invitations to perform on Saturday Night Live and The David Letterman Show.Despite the early fame, Brad's musical journey didn't begin until after his university years at the University of Winnipeg. “I didn't spend much time in music until after graduation. Success on the second record was overwhelming,” he admits. The Crash Test Dummies' rise to fame is a testament to their unique sound and Brad's distinct low voice, which became an unexpected asset.The reunion of the original line up in 2017 was a poignant moment for Brad and the band, marking a new chapter in their journey. “We decided we wanted to keep going because we had such a good time,” he reflects.As the band gears up for their upcoming tour, Brad's passion for music remains strong. “I still love touring and playing,” he says. In this episode, we chat about how the band formed, and the rapid rise and fall of their debut single Superman's Song on the Canadian charts. Brad tells us about the fickle nature of Canadian love for their artists, and how eye-opening an experience it was for him. We discuss the legendary Clive Davis's involvement, and the chart climbing success of the band's second album; God Shuffled His Feet, and how much I love it personally. 2023 is the 30-year anniversary of that album, and for some reason, I spend an inordinate amount of time explaining to Brad what this album has meant to me throughout the years. Air Force Falcons running back and 2023 NFL Draft prospect Brad Roberts joins the show. Brad talks about breaking Air Force's single-season rushing record, the uniqueness of playing for a service academy, and his aspirations in the NFL.

In 1993 while at a friends house getting high as the moon, he turned to me and said, "Dude, your hippie ass is going to love this."  He then put on the song "Superman Song" by Canadian rock band Crash Test Dummies.  I was so blown away by how insanely deep his voice was accompanied by this incredible folky sounding stuff.  Shortly after, he put on the album God Shuffled His Feet and to say that I was in love right away is an understatement. I vividly remember planting myself in the corner of his couch, closing my eyes, and letting the song "God Shuffled His Feet" take me to another plane.  It's a feeling I still get to this day (even when not high as the moon.) Since that fateful day, I have been a fan of Crash Test Dummies and their music has been consistent part of my life's soundtrack.  In 2023, Crash Test Dummies will be hitting the road once again to bring the magic of their songs to the people once again and I was so excited to have the chance to talk to lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Brad Roberts.  Brad is an amazing human being and I had an absolute blast talking to him about all things Crash Test Dummies.  We laughed and laughed some more and it was such a thrill for me.  Enjoy, y'all!

Episode five of NucleCast features Dr. Brad Roberts, who has served as director of the Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 2015. From 2009 to 2013, he was deputy assistant secretary of defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy. In this role, he served as policy director of the Obama administration's Nuclear Posture Review and Ballistic Missile Defense Review and led their implementation. Prior to entering government service, Dr. Roberts was a research fellow at the Institute for Defense Analyses and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, editor of The Washington Quarterly, and an adjunct professor at George Washington University. Between leaving the Office of the Secretary of Defense in 2013 and assuming his current responsibilities, Dr. Roberts was a consulting professor at Stanford University and William Perry Fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC). While at CISAC, he authored a book entitled The Case for US Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century, which won the Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title in 2016.
