Experts are calling on people to look after their memory and overall health this Brain Awareness month. Research shows the brain can grow and change - and deteriorate - over the years, so strengthening your mind is essential to stopping health conditions later on in life. BrainFit coach Jude Walter says the brain needs a variety of challenges to stay in shape. "Our brain is not a muscle, but it behaves very much like any muscle in our body. If I was to go to the gym and lift weights only with my left bicep, I'd have a beautiful rippling muscle on one side and nothing on the other." In this episode Heather and Dave talk to Luigi Scamberella about the brain, and how it works (or doesn't work) to help us through our lives. This week is Brain Awareness week, so it is a good time to be reminded of what the grey matter is up to. How it does it's best to protect us from perceived harm, and some of the "tricks" it uses to help us survive. Luigi kindly made a meditational audio track which you can find on the podcast list as "Mental Cleanse" Have a listen and take the time to be good to your mind for a moment or two. Think of it as a big of a cognitive holiday, and let's be honest we all need one of those.

Val spoke with Director of Programs Kate Anastasia about the different ways Alzheimer's disease can affect those who have it as well as the significance of Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness month coming up in June.
Most models, tools and processes, especially those focused on productivity, are not designed with the neurodivergent brain in mind. Often those of us with ADHD have to improvise to successfully implement a concept or a principle - think GTD or Omnifocus. Malsow's Hierarchy of Needs model is no different in its highly rigid and linear qualities. Yet, it still is an excellent source to prompt thought and exploration around the concept of basic needs. With ADHD, needs often go unnoticed (because of a lack of ‘big signal') until they become undeniable stressors. Ash and Cam turn their attention to distinguishing ADHD needs for each of the levels identified in the dated model. This week they start with the base level of physiological ADHD needs. To address physiological needs many automatically think about' effective brain management' through self care and medication. Ash and Cam argue that good management begins with good brain awareness. When we bring curiosity to our ADHD experience, we can build new awareness and learning. Awareness is so key to understanding one's own basic physiological needs. Ash brings his Ice Planet Hoth metaphor, describing his own valley experience and being in a state of frozen overwhelm at the beginning of coaching with Cam. The hosts discuss how the coaching process of ‘holding the space' for someone else can address connection and belongingness needs and open a door to better self care practices. The hosts also discuss how ADHD can impact other comorbidities like anxiety and depression. Ash and Cam reference the emotional pool model from episode 92. Guest: Gregory Kaczmarczyk, Family Physician with New West Physicians Alzheimer's is one of the most common types of dementia and leading causes of death in U.S. adults, particularly those who are 65 or older. In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans aged 65 or older had Alzheimer's disease. This number is projected to triple to 14 million people by 2060. This disease can be managed with medication. The biggest risk factor is age but life style can increase or decrease your risk. Having a healthy lifestyle (regular exercise, not smoking, minimal alcohol intake, a good social network) after 65 can delay the Alzheimer's. If you are starting notice things that might be a problem, reach out to your physician. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Alex J. Swanson is the founder of Nutrition Genome and creator of the software Genetrition. Alex is the son of our own “Ask Cheri” guest, Cheri Swanson. Influenced by his mom, he has taken nutrition to the next level. Alex explains how the Nutrition Genome works through a saliva sample from a cheek swab which holds your very own DNA. This is then shipped to a lab where they sequence and genotype it which is how to get DNA. This gives them a data file on all your genes. They then look at the data and make sense of it. This information relates to your brain and heart health, hormones, digestion and different parts of the body. Nutrigenomics is how your body responds to diet and how your genes respond to food. We are all a little different and all this relates back to our ancestors….how they ate and where they lived accumulates to who you are now. The Nutrition Genome removes the fear around genetic testing...showing how your genes are not necessarily your destiny, but rather your blueprint. Once you understand the blueprint you know how to make modifications and changes to help reduce the risk of disease. You can take steps to facilitate and help your own biochemistry to be its healthiest. You get a software report with genes for each section which shows gene variance (what makes you different from other people). All of this traces back to our migration roots. HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR INTERVIEW: We focus on Brain Awareness and Mental Health month so we talk about Alzheimer's prevention. When people have certain variances in the APOE gene (a gene that has to do with cholesterol as well as protects the brain neurons), they have reduced protection against Alzheimer’s. This genotype increases the risk of Alzheimer's and has both pros and cons (Pros: higher bone density, less risk of infertility, better calcium and Vitamin D absorption, less miscarriages). 2/3 of all Alzheimer's patients are women. Avoid inflammation by eating foods that are anti-inflammatory, such as foods that are high in choline and folate (egg yolks, chicken thighs vs. breast, liver, organ meats, nuts, broccoli, romaine lettuce, oranges, fenol, berries, freshly ground flax seeds, hops tea). Sleep is super important — you should be getting 7 ½ to 8 ½ hours per night. Important to fast 12-14 hours after your last meal (intermittent fasting) to give your body time to reset and filter. Focus on exercise and movement. Women can boost estrogen with foods and phytoestrogen (phytoestrogens foods: flax seeds, hops IPA beers and hops tea) Exotic mushrooms help the body adapt to stress (Chaga, Lions Mane, Reiche, Shiitake, Nayataki) Good brands for medicinal mushrooms: Mushroom Science and Fungi Perfecti Good brands for medicinal mushrooms: Mushroom Science Fungi Perfecti Book: The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest By, Dan Buettner Genome Testing: (*need affiliate link here) www.Nutrtiongenome.com Alex Swanson M.S. www.nutritiongenome.com www.thehealthbeat.com www.swansonhealthcenter.com HELP US SPREAD THE WORD! June is Brain Awareness and Mental Health month. Ladies Roadmap is shining a light on Alzheimer’s and today we are at the Alzheimer’s OC headquarters in Irvine, CA with the CEO Jim McAleer. There are over 84,000 people who suffer from Alzheimer's in Orange County alone and at least 34,000 Caregivers. Alzheimer’s Orange County is a community based non profit organization providing free programs and services for local families affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia. All of us knows someone whose been affected by this debilitating disease in some fashion, whether as a patient or caregiver. “Unfortunately, ladies it is far more likely to be a woman affected. You are twice as likely to get this disease and 66% of all caregivers are women.” There are many forms of Dementia, Alzheimer’s is just one form. What kind of doctor should you go to if you are concerned about yours or a loved ones memory? There is no cure at this time but many forms are treatable so get checked early if concerned! Exercise and diet are so important. Brain and heart health are one in the same. Many of the services provided at ALZOC are for the caregivers, teaching them how to not only care for their loved ones but also for themselves. “It’s the airplane rule, you have to put your own oxygen mask on first before you can help others long term.” We also hear 2 brave caregiver’s stories. Phyllis Greenberg shares her valuable story and journey with her beloved husband Morris. Jan Ebert shares her poignant story, as a loving daughter, with her dear mother. How do you recognize the signs of Alzheimer's and what do you look for in a loved one? They have different experiences and share some very important information and tips on how to not only take care of a loved one with Alzheimer's but how they took care of themselves. The importance of being honest and open with your friends and family.
