Why was he a man on a mission? He had just lost in the two events at the Olympic trials and was not going to represent the USA at the Olympics in 2000. That failure motivated him not just as a freshman at Texas but for the next four years. In the four years between 2000 - 2004, he would become the fastest breaststroker in the world and break the world record in the 100m and 200m events. In this interview, Mindset Forge host Barton and Brendan discuss how failures can be so motivating, how when he was surrounded by elite swimmers at the University of Texas it brought the best out of him and how we can do that in our own lives to bring the best out of ourselves. And finally, he talks about how the culture of a great team can be the secret sauce that helps everyone level up to their maximum potential because of peer to peer accountability.Established MindsetFrom childhood, the concept of failure was already known to Brendan. He got used to failure quickly because he hung out with his brother's friends, who are three years older than he is. His parents would describe his mindset as very much like the underdog. So when Brendan got into swimming, he quickly pushed his capabilities to the limit. He had an excellent developmental coach who was there to make every failure a learning opportunity. Whenever Brendan does something wrong, his coach would pull him to the side and tell him how to do it correctly. Having this foundation of mindset was what made Brendan ready to take head-on whatever challenge there is. Being told that he is going to fail his way to success was perceived positively rather than negatively. It was perceived as a way to grow from the experience, and that helps Brendan understand how to tweak moving forward. 3x Gold medalist Brendan Hansen digs in with host Barton about looking at the silver lining of failure. Brendan's mindset of failure has been honed since he started swimming with the help of the coaches he had. Because of this, it became the fire that drove his desire to be the best. In this episode, Brendan shares why every failure is an opportunity to learn.Established MindsetFrom childhood, the concept of failure was already known to Brendan. Failure MentalityThe summer before Brendan went to the University of Texas, he participated in the 2000 Olympic Trials. Landing first or second place would mean qualifying to the US Olympic Swimming Team. Brendan was confident and felt as if he was the number one breaststroker in the world. It was his first opportunity to swim at the international level. Unfortunately, despite doing everything right as his coach intended him to, Brendan failed to make it to the Olympic team. He finished third place in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. He brought that experience when he walked into the University of Texas and took to heart his mindset of failing his way to success. Brendan believes that surrounding himself with better people than him pushes up the intensity to excel. He had nine Olympians with him on the university team. It was a good thing for Brendan because seeing his college roommate win an Olympic gold medal also pushed him to succeed. Eric Shanteau is a 2x Olympian, World Champion swimmer, and cancer destroyer. He also holds the American Record for Most Times Getting 3rd at US Olympic Trials (5x) as well as the AR for Most Events Getting 3rd at OT's (4 events; 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 Breast, 200 Breast). Shanteau grew up swimming for Swim Atlanta and Chris Davis and was one of the four Auburn Tigers (George Bovell (Episode #111), Doug Van Wie, and Kurt Cady) that went 32-4-4 in their NCAA swimming career. That's 32 dual meet wins (and 0 losses), 4 SEC Championships, and 4 NCAA Titles -- completely undefeated. In the mid-2000's, while Shanteau grew into one of the world's best IM'ers, so did two other young Americans. Just so happens they turned out to be the two most decorated swimmers ever: Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. At the 2004 Olympic Trials, Shanteau placed 3rd behind Phelps and Lochte. He also placed 3rd in the 400 IM behind Phelps and Erik Vendt. The same thing happened at the 2008 Olympic Trials: 3rd in the 200 IM behind Phelps and Lochte. 3rd in the 100 Breast. Finally, his opportunity came in the 200 Breast, qualifying for his first Olympics in 2008. Prior to the Games, Shanteau was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He opted to swim before going under the knife. Shanteau popped off at World Championships in 2009. The famous Rome meet. He won a Bronze medal in the 200 IM and a Silver in the 200 Breast which was an American Record of 2:07.42. In 2012, he qualified 2nd behind Brendan Hansen in the 100 Breast which led him to win an Olympic gold medal in the 400 Medley Relay by swimming on the morning relay. Also, at the 2012 Olympic Trials, he got -- you guessed it -- 3rd yet again -- this time in the 200 Breast. Shanteau married another Auburn All-American, Jeri Moss. This week we are honored to chat with American Breaststroke legend, Brendan Hansen! Brendan had an illustrious career at the University of Texas winning the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at NCAA's all four years of college, becoming the first swimmer to ever accomplish that feat. Brendan then went on to represent the United States at 3 Olympic Games, winning numerous medals and breaking world record after world-record along the way. Following his retirement in 2012, Brendan worked in the corporate world for a short time before returning to his roots and becoming a coach at Austin Swim Club where he coached numerous swimmers to national-level meets. Today I had the chance to sit down with one of the greatest Breaststrokers of all time. Brendan has broken the world record on multiple occasions and has won a total of 25 international medals. Getting the chance to talk with Brendan was truly a full circle moment for me as I grew up watching him represent USA in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 games. He offers a great perspective for our current athletes, especially those dealing with their seasons being uprooted with all that is happening right now.
Olympic Gold Medalist and former World Record Holder Brendan Hansen is "allergic to average." In this interview, Hansen describes his competitive instincts and underdog work ethic in preparation for the Athens, Beijing, and London Olympic Games.
