Today's podcast guest is 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist and recent FINA Masters WR holder, US Olympian Ryan Held from the New York Athletic Club.We talked about Ryan's swim in the 4x100m free relay to win gold in Rio '16 and how he ended up swimming that third leg in the final, with Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian and Caleb Dressel as team mates. We also discussed the recent 2022 US Nationals and Ryan's 100m freestyle race that got him back onto that US Team for the upcoming World Championships.. In between those two bookends, Ryan experienced a few set backs, that might have made other swimmers throw in the towel, so to speak. But his quiet determination, hard work and humility ensured Ryan came back to form at just the right time. Not to say that there weren't highlights in that time, namely breaking the US 100m National Freestyle record in 2019 and in 2021 breaking the 25-29 yrs FINA Masters WR in the 50m free.Ryan's stories around all these events are just pretty terrific. I love the fact he is a huge fan of masters swimming and he sees himself doing more masters meets when he retires from professional swimming. Not yet though! he has plenty more goals to reach leading into Paris 2024. Ryan is certainly a swimmer to watch and a joy to have on the podcast. You will love this chat.Follow Ryan on Instagram:@heldiloxConnect with Torpedo Swimtalk:https://torpedoswimtalk.comLeave us a review. We love to get your feedback!
Nathan Adrian is one of Team USA's most decorated swimmers. The 2012 Olympic 100m Freestyle champion has enjoyed plenty of success in the pool, but recently had to battle something bigger than a major swim meet - cancer. On this episode of My Defining Moments, Nathan talks through that cancer diagnosis, his first swim back in the pool and how he returned to the top stop of the podium the following year. We also took a deep dive into Nathan's early career, including the incredible journey to his first Olympic Games in 2008, how important the NCAAs are to his success and what it is like to become Olympic champion. Plus, we hear stories of life in the ready room, racing with and against Michael Phelps and how important the US Olympic team officials are in the dining hall. This is definitely one to listen to if you're a young swimmer dreaming of Olympic glory! If you enjoyed the podcast, please like, share, follow or leave a comment on your podcast supplier - it really helps spread the word and share the stories of these amazing athletes. AnyQuestion - https://Anyquestion.com/RyanMurphy When Ryan Murphy was just eight years old, he dreamed of becoming an Olympic swimmer and breaking world records. Thirteen years later, at the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio, his lifelong dream came true. There, Ryan not only became an Olympian, but he crushed his Olympic goals by winning three gold medals in the 100 meter backstroke, the 200-meter backstroke and the 4×100 meter medley relay, setting a new world record for the 100-meter backstroke. In 2021, he did it again winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. Ryan comes from a family of swimmers. In 2017, he turned pro, earned the PAC 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year award and completed his B.S. in Business Administration from the prestigious Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming at its annual Golden Goggle Awards. Former Cal and U.S. National Team swimmers Nathan Adrian and Will Copeland are expanding their swim lesson business into a full-fledged USA Swimming club. Adrian and Copeland, who are the owners of the AC Swim Club, will combine operations with the Westside Aquaducks, a USA Swimming team, on Wednesday. They'll take over the program from retiring head coach Dea Ann, who founded the club in 2006. As part of the transition, Adrian and Copeland will bring in Jon Hiett as the head coach of the Aquaducks. He spent the last 4 years as the head assistant coach with the Tualatin Hills Swim Club in Oregon, which is a USA Swimming silver medal club. While Adrian and Copeland will be involved in the administrative running of the Westside Aquaducks, Hiett will be the coach and will be responsible for athlete performance. Both Adrian and Copeland are actively instructing at the swim school. The swim school is located in San Rafael, California, while the Aquaducks train out of Petaluma, which is about 20 miles away. The 32-year old Adrian represented the US at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Games, racking up 5 Olympic gold medals among 8 total. We sat down with Olympic champion and USA sprinting legend, Nathan Adrian to get his wisdom through 2 days of the Olympic Games. The most interesting thing he said: we should start a petition that top seed gets to choose what lane they swim in at night. Why? Adrian prefers the outside lane for his events, especially a 100 free because that way competitors can't ride your wave as much. Adrian noted that on the lead-off of the 400 free relay, everyone knows US star Caeleb Dressel will be out fast and they gravitate to him like a magnet, trying to benefit from the wake he creates. Will 5-time Olympic champion Nathan Adrian make the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team? It's a fair question. He's on the march toward his 4th U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, and I'm bullish on his performance for two reasons: Back at the 2019 World Championships, 5 months after recovering from cancer, Nathan anchored the men's 4x100 free relay with a 47.08 -- holding off Russia's Evgeny Rylov to help Team USA to World Championship gold. At the recent Mission Pro Swim he dropped a 48.7 100m free, a very solid in-season swim after this trying COVID shutdown year. I'm not sure he'll make the U.S. Olympic Team individually, but I do see him on the 4x100 free relay, and I see him leading the U.S. Team as captain to a successful effort in Tokyo. Nathan is an eight-time Olympic medalist who has played key roles in some of the fastest relay teams in history. From 2008 to 2019, he won gold at World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, or the Olympics every year but one. He has 16 World Championships medals (LCM) to his name, and has served as a USA Swimming Foundation Ambassador since 2014. In today’s episode, Nathan shares his history in sports and specifically swimming right from the start up to current day. Along the way, he discusses his college experience, his experiences at Worlds and the Olympics and what he learned from them, his training, becoming Team USA’s Captain, and his sense of joy and optimism as well as some tips he follows to maintain it. Nathan also recounts some of his most memorable performances, the importance of having humbling moments and knowing yourself, and his cancer diagnosis and its impact upon him. He draws the episode to a close by sharing how the pandemic and Tokyo postponement have affected him, and his thoughts on becoming a father in the near future. Nathan’s fascinating journey is one filled with both highs and lows, and, throughout it all, he demonstrates the wisdom to tease out the lessons to be learned from each experience – lessons not only about sports, but about life in general, which he translates into valuable advice for us all here today. Episode Highlights: · Nathan’s start in sports and journey to swimming · His college experience · Nathan’s advice for athletes when choosing their college · The impact of training with Mike Bottom’s professional team · What he learned through his first Worlds and Olympic Trials experiences · Nathan’s first Olympics · The differences between his three Olympics · Expectations for those who make the USA Olympics Swimming Team · His experience as Team Captain · Nathan’s sense of joy and optimism and some ways he maintains it · How his approach to training changes for swimming yards or meters · Nathan’s most memorable performances · The importance of having humbling moments and knowing how you operate the best · Transitioning from college to pro · Nathan’s diagnosis of testicular cancer · His return to training after his treatment · The impact of the pandemic and the Olympic postponement · Becoming a parent soon Quotes: “I was always competing in my own little third child way.” “I was trying to keep up with these guys, all the time, everyday.” “No matter how hard you think you have tried, or no matter how any given competition has gone up until that point, like, your next race might be the one.” “Team USA and USA Swimming do a great job of, you know, helping you, make you feel secure.” “I felt like my job there was to go to swim as fast as I could on the relay for Team USA and then try to just soak up all the knowledge and experience, and just watch people go through what they need to go through to be successful.” “We are going to do whatever we can to give you something to be successful.” “You don’t want to be Captain to be enforcer of rules or punishments.” “I do seem to err on the side of optimism.” “What contributing factors perhaps put me in, you know, this sort of rut, and what can I do in the future to try to avoid that?” “My freestyle, I have, I’d say, let’s just call it like five different gears…let’s call six gears.” “It takes a long time at the beginning of the season to sort of groove those neuropatterns out, but once you’re clicking…you just kind of do it.” “I think every athlete that gets up to a certain level has these sorts of stories where they just totally sucked, and no matter what their resume is, that story is still there.” “You really have to know yourself.” “You, as the patient, still have to make actual decisions.” “The diagnosis itself will definitely change your outlook, especially, I think for an athlete who is all about that delayed gratification, that payoff at the end of the season.” “I still look forward to going to practice even to this day.” “It certainly shaped my own paradigm moving forward…I almost got so much just ripped away.” “My wife was a saint through it.” “Something feels off…like, my left foot doesn’t sweat – it’s like the weirdest thing ever.” “Your body has this incredible way of finding a way to compensate and, you know, figure out a way to still move through the water.” “I’m just getting a little bit better each and every week.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage: http://thepursuitofgold.com/ Mental Training: https://www.laurawilkinson.com/learn Laura’s Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lala_the_diver Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheLauraWilkinson Connect with Nathan: Homepage: http://www.nathanadrian.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nathangadrian/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/nathangadrian
Jason Lezak got kicked off the UCSB swim team in the middle of his Junior year. A decade later he split 46.0 on the back of Team USA's 4x100 Free Relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to reel in France's Alain Bernard. It is the Olympic performance of all Olympic performances. The swim of all swims. His last name literally become a verb. Jason is now the GM of the Cali Condors. Brett and Jason talk about... How were you so consistent both domestically and internationally for such a long period of time? Why did you go to UC Santa Barbara? Didn't make NCAA's as a Sophomore, got kicked off the team, and then made Finals as a Junior. Big progression in a short time. Starting doing all the little things right. Sleeping. Eating. SYDNEY Getting beat by the Australians in 2000 in the 4x100 Free Relay and receiving a Silver medal. What regrets do you have on that relay? Def over swam the first 25. ATHENS What was Athens like for you? "I was looking at that relay for 4 years and all I wanted to do was like I said get on that podium and hear the National Anthem and this time we got the Bronze medal to start the Olympics..." - Jason Lezak Taking it too easy in Prelims and getting 21st in the 100 Free. Swam in the Finals of the 50 Free with Brett. He was in Lane 3, Roland Schoeman was in Lane 4 as top seed, and Brett was in Lane 5. Finishing Athens strong with a Gold medal 4x100 Medley Relay. Gary walking out in the silk robe. What's your recollection from that race? You had some tension with Gary Hall Jr. didn't you? Tell me about that. Team USA's 4x100 Free Relay from 1999-2004 just couldn't come together. BEIJING Broke the AR at OT's in the 100 Free. Had anchored the relays for years, was very prepared. Brett was coaching Fred Bousquet at the time. Gives his perspective. Jason thought he false started. Did you get in the zone? Were you on auto pilot? How did you stay in the game for so long? Nathan Adrian over taking Jason as the top American. Cesar Cielo. "People were telling me to retire after every Olympics." - Jason Lezak Coaching himself starting in 2006. He swam until he was 36. More and more schools are cutting their swim programs, including the storied University of Iowa team, who were integral in developing Butterfly in the 1930s. We discuss this story and the evolution of Butterfly, with the recent passing of the first Olympic Butterfly Champion from 1956. Then we discuss Caeleb's self analysis of his 50 skins from ISL, going deep into the affects of oxygen depravation and lactate build up. Finally we discuss Nathan Adrian's choice for a guest on our show, with discussion on the future of NCAA swimming rounding off the show.
Nathan Adrian is an extremely thoughtful athlete, and perhaps an even more thoughtful human. When I speak with him, I always admire the thought and calculation he puts into his answers. During his time inside, he's put thought into how he's spending his time during the things he wants to do and the things he doesn't want to do. In 2019, three-time Olympian swimmer Nathan Adrian was diagnosed and treated for testicular cancer - setting him up for a difficult road to recovery in time for Tokyo 2020, hopefully to be his fourth Olympic Games. Then the global pandemic rescheduled all of 2020. The five-time Olympic gold medalist talks about how the postponement may have helped him, the difficult task of finding Olympic-sized pools in a global crisis, and how his public health degree keeps him up at night these days. Jensen and Nathan also come up with things to balance on his head while swimming, in hopes of leaving that warlock Katie Ledecky in his viral wake. We sat down with the 100 freestyle savant himself, Nathan Adrian, to talk about his perfect race. He said that individually, his 100 free from the 2012 London Olympics, where he won gold by .01 and posted his lifetime best, was as close as he's come to executing a perfect race. As far as relay performances go, Nathan was a little coy when it came to strategy, but did admit that anchoring the 4x100 medley relay in London was one of his favorite relay memories. Although we have become accustomed to him making it look easy year after year, Nathan says that going 48 in the 100m freestyle is never easy, and he has to try very hard to do so every time he does. Nathan joins Brad Howe and Tony Caridi for an inside look into the preparation and expectation for the upcoming event. Adrian explains the challenges facing the team and why he wanted to be involved. In a span of 40 minutes, the most unique season in the history of WVU basketball came to a record setting ending. A team ranked 13th in the preseason polls finished with the most losses in school history. The dream of a late-season resurrection and CBI championship ended instead with a record setting defeat. The Mountaineers 109-91 loss to Coastal Carolina established a new record for most points ever allowed by an opponent at the Coliseum. A season mired in discipline problems which led to the dismissal of two players, also included the first half benching of WVU's leading rebounder Derek Culver for tardiness. Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi discuss the game and an off-season that is expected to include major roster moves. Who stays? Who goes? What must happen for WVU to return to its winning ways? Those topics and more on episode 104 of Three Guys Before The Game.
It's on to the quarterfinals of the CBI for the Mountaineer basketball team. Wednesday's 77-63 victory over Grand Canyon University advances WVU into a Monday home game against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. Once again, WVU's youth movement was on full display with first-year players accounting for 66 percent of the total points. What's a Chanticleer? The fellas (Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi) provide that answer plus an in-depth statistical breakdown of WVU's season before and after its well-publicized disciplinary dismissals. In addition to celebrating Nathan's birthday, the guys also taste-test hot peppers donated by a loyal listener. They'll return on Tuesday for an instant recap of WVU's date with Coastal Carolina.
What do Kansas City, Antelopes, and motivational speeches have in common? They're all part of the discussion on episode 102 of Three Guys Before The Game. Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian, and Tony Caridi wrap up WVU's semifinal appearance in the Big 12 tournament and look ahead to Wednesday's home date against the visiting Antelopes of Grand Canyon in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational. The guys put the Mountaineers late season improvement in perspective and discuss the pros and cons of participating in the CBI.They'll return on Thursday for a recap of WVU vs Grand Canyon.
You would never imagine that following a 13 win team could be so much fun. However, the reconstituted Mountaineer basketball team continues raise eyebrows not only in West Virginia but also in Kansas City. The Mountaineers 72-71 victory over Oklahoma in Wednesday's opening round continues to build the late season narrative that less is more when it comes to WVU. A team that won two games in 57 days has now won two of its last three. All nine players available saw action and played 10 or more minutes. It was the definition of a team win. WVU's victory over the Sooners leaves Oklahoma's NCAA hopes teetering. The fellas (Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian, Tony Caridi) review last night's win and look ahead to tonight's quarterfinal tangle with second-seeded regular season co-champion Texas Tech. The guys will be back with another episode on Monday.
With four regular season games to play, the undermanned Mountaineers may have reached a unity they've lacked all season. Will recent performances against Kansas State and Baylor translate to victories?Just how bad have injuries and disciplinary issues hampered Big 12 schools this season? The fellas provide a complete audit. Guess which school has been impacted the most? The episode closes with an email from a listener that left Brad Howe and Nathan Adrian distraught. What pushed them to the point of no return?Learn that answer and more on the 96th episode of Three Guys Before The Game.
What do Nathan Adrian and Zion Williamson have in common? They've both blown out sneakers in nationally televised games. Nate's took place in the Big 12 Conference tournament. The fellas discuss shoes and Baylor's surprising season on the 95th episode of Three Guys. Just how did Baylor go from being picked 9th in the preseason polls to contending for the conference title? Those topics and more as the guys go Footloose and Sassy.
Improved effort but anemic shooting spelled defeat for WVU against Kansas State. The Wildcats, currently rated fourth nationally in scoring defense, limited the Mountaineers to just 51 points. However, WVU did play with the effort that coach Bob Huggins has been demanding.Nathan Adrian, Brad Howe and Tony Caridi share their thoughts on the Big Monday encounter. The guys spend considerable time on what history tells us about improvement from one season to the next in the Big 12. What's the realistic number of wins WVU can expect next season? Those topics, plus a shoutout to our listeners in Ireland, on episode 94 of Three Guys Before The Game. The guys will return on Thursday.
What will happen to the West Virginia University basketball team following the dismissal of senior Esa Ahmad and junior Wes Harris? Will the Mountaineers be energized or demoralized by the departures? What does history tells us when it comes to fixing WVU's current woes? Just how long will it take?Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi answer those questions and much more on episode 93 of Three Guys Before The Game. Three Guys will reconvene on Tuesday following WVU's games against Kansas and Kansas State.
The flicker of hope from Saturday's win over Oklahoma was extinguished in record setting proportion on Monday night in Lubbock, Texas.WVU's 81-50 loss to Texas Tech established a modern day record of futility. The last time the Mountaineers made nine field goals in a game was a 30-22 loss to Duquesne in 1942.That's not the only mark that was set. Freshman Derek Culver's 24 free throw attempts are the most since Rod Thorn attempted 23 in 1963. And, in the unofficial record book, Logan Routt joins a short list of Mountaineers ejected from a game that never entered the contest. In short, it was a bizarre Big Monday. Just how did WVU go from a Saturday win against Oklahoma to a blowout loss? That's among the topics discussed by Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi. After playing three road games in ten days, the Mountaineers won't return to action until Saturday night when they host Texas. The game is sold-out.
A frigid trip to Iowa has left the Mountaineers frozen solid.WVU's lopsided loss at Iowa State is the third consecutive road defeat by 17 or more points. The Mountaineers again struggled mightily with turnovers finishing with 19. WVU is now averaging 16 turnovers per game while only forcing 13. Press Virginia is officially dead. The fellas (Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi) pull back the layers of the eighth loss in nine games, and look ahead to Saturday's home date against Oklahoma. The Sooners will arrive in Morgantown reeling after a blowout loss at home to Baylor on Monday.
Blake & I discuss the Sun Yang Doping controversy, Well wishes to Nathan Adrian as he recovers from cancer treatments. Thoughts on Ryan Lochte on Celebrity Big Brother & a lot more!
An early big lead turned into a late big loss for the Mountaineer basketball team. Saturday's setback at top-rated Tennessee was the sixth loss in seven games for WVU. Now what? The Mountaineers return to Big 12 play on Wednesday hurting both physically and mentally. Junior guard Beetle Bolden's sprained ankle forced him out of Saturday's game. His status remains in doubt. Wednesday's game against Iowa State begins a three game in five day stretch with two of the contests on the road. Iowa State, dealt with injuries early in the season, but has won three of its last four games. At 15-5 overall, the Cyclones have a legitimate chance to unseat defending champion Kansas. Iowa State was the most impressive team in Saturday's SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The Cyclones pounded 20th ranked Ole Miss in Oxford 87-73. Join Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi as they review Saturday's visit to Knoxville and look ahead to Wednesday 's date in Ames.
Can the Mountaineers beat two top-10 teams in a span of seven days? That's the question the fellas (Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi) ponder on this episode of Three Guys Before The Game. Yes, WVU did beat 7th rated Kansas last Saturday, but number one Tennessee offers a completely different set of challenges. Coach Rick Barnes squad appears to have no weaknesses. The Vols are big, talented, confident, and will be playing their first home game as the nation's top team. Nathan Adrian was part of multiple wins over number one when he played at WVU. He shares the recipe for success and more. Enjoy the show. The crew will return on Monday.
How did the Mountaineer basketball team beat 7th ranked Kansas and then lose in convincing fashion to Baylor two days later? It's the number one question on episode 86 of Three Guys Before The Game. Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi try to solve the riddle of the Mountaineers perplexing play. The fellas also go in depth on the statistics WVU has produced in its wins and losses. As you might imagine, there's a huge difference between the two. A tale of two teams takes center stage on this edition of Three Guys Before The Game.
A redshirt comes off, two starters are benched, and the Mountaineers fall to 0-4 in the Big 12. Now what? The WVU basketball team is entering a zone where no other Bob Huggins team has gone before. As the veteran coach continues to push buttons, the result remains the same. Will Saturday's benching of Esa Ahmad and Wes Harris lead to more productivity or will the first year players continue to see more action?Nathan Adrian, Brad Howe, and Tony Caridi discuss that question along with a detailed look at how much players have improved or digressed in their WVU tenures.
Neal Brown wins rave reviews in his introductory press conference, while the Mountaineer basketball team flounders in the finish at Kansas State. Brad Howe, Nathan Adrian, and Tony Caridi provide their take on both topics on episode 83 of Three Guys Before The Game. Mountaineer Nation learned more from Brown on his plans to lead WVU football into the future. What quality does he have that makes him so likeable? How did Kansas State come back from a 21 point deficit? Nathan Adrian shares his thoughts on why WVU is now 0-3 in Big 12 play. Share and enjoy. The guys will return with a new episode on Monday.
Did WVU pull off the coaching hire of the season? Neal Brown's arrival at WVU is drawing praise from both inside the state and across the nation. On the basketball court, improved defense and effort hasn't been enough in WVU first two Big 12 games. What's the solution?Brad Howe, Hoppy Kercheval, Nathan Adrian and Tony Caridi provide insight and ask a few questions of their own on episode 82 of Three Guys Before The Game.
The clock is winding toward the hiring of a new Mountaineer football coach. Interviews began Wednesday and continue today. The entire process could be complete by this weekend.Hoppy Kercheval, Brad Howe and Tony Caridi update the search and detail how the eventual choice will be made. In a Three Guys first, Nathan Adrian slides into the show (literally) to talk about WVU's season opening loss to Texas Tech. Adrian answers the question of why the Mountaineers continue to turn the ball over at a record rate. Those topics and more on episode 81 of Three Guys. Enjoy
One Mountaineer departs another is found that's the quick take of the last 48 hours for WVU football and basketball. Nathan Adrian joins Brad Howe and Tony Caridi to offer their take on Will Grier's decision to skip the bowl and the reemergence of Sagaba Konate. Does Grier's decision become the precedent for all draftable quarterbacks in bowl games? Will bowl games need to reinvent themselves to deter future players from skipping out?WVU beat Pitt, but 26 turnovers paints a frightening picture of what lies ahead in Big 12 play. Can it be fixed? You'll never guess who Nathan Adrian says was the best player he ever faced in college. Really, you'll be surprised. These topics and more on episode 74 of Three Guys Before The Game. The guys will return for another episode on Thursday.
And then there were four. For the first time in Three Guys history, a fourth "guy" joins the team. Nathan Adrian returns from hiatus to to discuss two main topics. The fellas battle on bowl participation. How many Mountaineers will skip the bowl? If Will Grier doesn't play will it impact his legacy at WVU? Next up, the status of Mountaineer basketball following Tuesday's Garden Gators debacle. Is there hope for a WVU team that appeared lost and confused? What does history tell us about Mountaineer teams that lose three of their first eight games? The hard numbers plus plenty of insight from the gang on episode 73 of Three Guys.
The bubble has burst, the rainbow has faded, and now the question becomes will the Mountaineer football team be able to regroup after Saturday's meltdown against Iowa State? The WVU loss was statistically historic and not in a good way. The fellas break down the Mountaineer defeat and try to shed light on exactly why it happened. Can it be corrected? Special host, Nathan Adrian, joins the group for some basketball insights as WVU prepares for Friday's Gold and Blue debut. It's football, basketball, and more on episode 58 of Three Guys Before The Game.

Before looking ahead to WVU's west coast trip to battle the Pacers of Murray State, the fellas put a wrap on last week's Big 12 Championship. The Senator, Brad Howe, comes very strong with perhaps the best factoid of the season. WVU doesn't lose when four players score in double figures. Tony wonders outloud if Nathan Adrian remembers Stephen F. Austin's Thomas Walkup's name. Yeah, Nate remembered him.
