Work ethic and grit were the two values instilled in Brian Reilly at a young age from his parents, whose sacrifices changed the trajectory of his life. His experience as a first-generation college student and athlete spurred his journey into the startup world. Each step since, has brought a lesson that shapes the drive behind what he does today as Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Will Ventures. The initial idea for Will Ventures came around 2013, in our conversation Brian walks us through what it took to get from idea to launch in 2020, including: What he was testing, building, and researching over a 7 year span to crystalize the thesis for Fund I. Isaiah Kacyvenski is one of the most decorated Ivy League football players of all time. While at Harvard, he won Ivy League Rookie of the Year and then followed that up with All-Ivy League first-team honors over his final three seasons. He received the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, which is given to "best, most academically talented" football player in New England, and also the Harvard University Male Athlete of the Year following his senior season. After Harvard, Kacyvenski was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in 2000, becoming the highest draft pick in Harvard history (fourth round, No. 199 overall. Beyond his contributions as a linebacker, he was a pivotal player on the Seahawks' special teams and helped in their run to Super Bowl XL. More impressive than any on-field accomplishment, however, is what Kacyvenski overcame just to have the opportunity to play football in the first place. He dealt with bouts of homelessness as a kid and the tragic loss of his mother during his senior year of high school. That power of will is what keeps driving him as he enters the next phase of his professional career. Last year, Kacyvenski announced a $55 million dollar early-stage venture fund focused on health, wellness, media and content; the fund is called Will Ventures. Along with fellow former Harvard football player Brian Reilly, as well as other Harvard student-athlete graduates Kirby Porter and Alexis Nocolia, Kacyvenski is seeking out “relentless entrepreneurs with the will to change the world.” About The Game Plan The Game Plan is a weekly SportTechie podcast hosted by venture capitalists Jay Kapoor and Tim Katt. We’re starting to drown in plastic just as momentum was starting to build around alternatives to single use plastic packaging. "When you listen to the music of Butchers Blind you know the future of Alt-Country shines blindingly bright. It’s easy to hear the influences of Wilco, Gram Parsons and The Band in their music, but the real magic is how they blend these ingredients into a musical recipe all their own. Butchers Blind encompasses the rich history of American Roots music, then broadens and reshapes it into something exciting, refreshing and uniquely their own. Butchers Blind hail from Bellerose, New York and is comprised of Pete Mancini on guitar and vocals, Paul Cianciaruso on drums and vocals, Brian Reilly on bass, and Joe Sanders on lead guitar. In 2011, they signed with Paradiddle Records, an independent record label based out of Huntington, New York. That year they released their debut CD, Play for the Films. The Mancini-penned tunes on Play for the Films were inspired by travel journals kept by his father as well as experiences from his own cross-country travels. Their new record, Destination Blues, marks a significant step forward for the band. They are venturing into new musical territory while keeping one foot firmly grounded in the sound they established with their first record, Play for the Films. The focus for this CD was on capturing the live energy of their current lineup as they continue to explore and develop their own sound. Destination Blues will be released on Paradiddle Records. While bands like Whiskeytown and Uncle Tupelo helped shape their Americana roots, the raw energy of the Replacements and the Hold Steady give them a rock sensibility. Pete Mancini’s confident, yet vulnerable vocals give their sound a rich texture. His songwriting draws you in and if you listen close enough you can hear the future of Alt-Country music in every note." Enjoy this show from 2010 as we await the arrival of Destination Blues.
