After five years leading apartment development for Indianapolis-based real estate firm Birge & Held, Jarod Brown decided he wanted a business with his name on the door. So he struck out on his own in late 2022 and soon hung his shingle for Brown Capital Group on an historic building in Broad Ripple. As a developer, he hit the ground running with an impressive set of established relationships and a strong track record in central Indiana. He currently is working on several major apartment projects in various stages of development in the Indy area, including The Grounds, a 236-unit project at 22nd and Central; The Row, a three-building complex by the Monon Trail at 22nd Street; Rosedale Hills Apartments, a 132-unit project on the south side of Indianapolis; and The Grove, a 188-unit complex in Whitestown. Sonja and Alex Overhiser are among the most influential chefs in Indiana, but you won't find them working in any restaurant. From the kitchen in their home south of Broad Ripple, they have created, tested and posted more than 3,000 recipes to their 14-year-old food-influencer website, acouplecooks.com. It logs millions of pageviews per month, while the Overhisers also maintain a social media following that includes about 107,000 subscribers on Instagram and 96,000 followers on Pinterest. For the last several years, they also have been working on a glossy cookbook for publisher Chronicle Books that leverages the punny hook in their brand: A Couple Cooks. They're not just two relatives: Sonja and Alex are married, and the cookbook addresses the joys and challenges of people who work together to make the same dishes. Titled “A Couple Cooks: 100 Recipes to Cook Together,” it also includes step-by-step instructions for sharing the workload for each dish. Indiana University hired its new football coach. James Madison University's Curt Cignetti will succeed Tom Allen, who was fired Sunday after seven seasons. Attorney General Todd Rokita is under investigation again by the Indiana attorney disciplinary commission, weeks after the state Supreme Court publicly reprimanded him. The state Department of Education announced it will grant nearly $15 million to school corporations across the state to support literacy. Indianapolis moved one step closer to the purchase of the Broad Ripple Park Family Center this week. The measure uses Tax Increment Financing, or TIF, to pay for the center, and many in the community are not happy. In states where abortion was restricted following the fall of Roe v. Last week in Broad Ripple, a mural depicting the late Indianapolis DJ and photojournalist Mpozi Tolbert was painted over. The mural's erasure provoked widespread outrage in the community. The artist and musician Mike Graves joins Kyle Long to discuss Mpozi's history in Indianapolis. Graves was a close friend and colleague of Mpozi. In 2016, Graves painted his own mural of Mpozi in Fountain Square in collaboration with artist Justin Cooper. We also look back at Farm Aid 2023 which happened last week in Noblesville, Indiana. The all-day music festival featured performances by iconic American musicians, from Willie Nelson to Neil Young. The event also celebrated the work of Indiana farmers, including Lauren McCalister of Ellettsville and Denise Greer Jamerson of Princeton. Hear their stories this week on Cultural Manifesto.
