In the Year of Darkness, 2024 - one podcast will be sent back to the past to discuss “ice cream scooping” waitresses to save humanity!! That's right, pluck out those eyeballs and put in your earbuds as we open up shop on the James Cameron classic, THE TERMINATOR, for its 40th anniversary!! It's a movie that's probably been talked about by more people than any other film we've discussed on the show. Yet, so many mysteries remain, such as the source of Tech Noir's citywide success and why Cyberdyne thought a robot with Arnold Schwarzenegger's body type would fit in amongst starving human scavengers in the post-apocalypse? And those are hardly the only questions we're asking here: what is the deal with Cameron's obsession with extraneous limbs during sex scenes? At what point does the T-800 begin to stink so badly? Is this film the best representation of Bob's Big Boy on film? All this, plus we wonder if “Dagwooding it” post-sex is something we can stomach, and we dine out on a jam-packed edition of Choose Your Deathventure!! The future may be unwritten, but don't let this episode go undownloaded!! Part of the BLEAV Network. Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon! I caught up with David Stepanavicius from ATRÆ BILIS to discuss their latest album, Aumicide. We talk about the evolution from 2021's Apexapien, the intense themes behind "Inward to Abraxas," and the stunning visuals that bring the track to life. David also illuminates the collaboration behind the album's cover art and discusses the raw energy of Aumicide, shaped by Cyberdyne slams and vocal experiments. With more touring on the horizon, we explore their preparation and what fans can expect to live. Something else, David is an Aussie ex-pat living in Canada so it was great to hear that he is going great and capturing the attention of extreme metal fans across North America! https://www.facebook.com/atraebilis

But it's not until Ted's girlfriend Jennifer is attacked by the the creature, that he decides to jump into action and end the Syngenor threat forever! Or something. Stew and John Wayne rank the 6 movies in the Terminator series from worst to first. Plus, a 20-year class reunion, and John Wayne's fantasy TV talk.
Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler make fun of Netflix for copying Cultpix's policy of no-censorship and spending its members' money wisely. Smut Peddler has been getting public recognition for his contribution to film history, plus the extraordinary amounts paid for old VHS tapes. We then set sail for film Fantasy Island, with lots of flesh exposed. The Beastmaster (1982) - He can talk to beasts and fights evil wizards. He is Dr Doolittle-meets-Gor! Surprisingly this swords-n-sorcery epic was not a commercial hit when first released in cinemas, but became a mainstay on HBO (so much so that Dennis Miller joked that it was short for, "Hey, Beastmaster's On") and TBS ("The Beastmaster Station"). This film spawned two sequels and popular TV series. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) - The first of three Sinbad films, this was made famous by Ray Harryhausen's stop/motion VFX, called Dynavision. Sinbad battles lots of monsters on his quest, but it is the sword fighting skeleton that proved the most popular, resurrected in Jason and the Argonauts, and arguably inspired the original Cyberdyne 101 Terminator model. Also one of the best movie scores ever by Bernard Herrmann. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) - The third voyage of Sinbad and Ray Harryhausen spent a year and a half on the VFX, but the stop-motion started to look dated in the age of Star Wars. Still a good kid's fantasy epic, with a baboon playing chess with Jane Seymour. Sinbad has to face down an evil witch, but it's the creatures we remember. Dr Cyclops (1940) - Dr Cyclops has a lab deep in the jungles of South America where his atomic experiments enable him to shrink living creatures. When four explorers try to stop his dastardly megalomaniac plans for humanity, they find themselves shrunk to doll size. Try battling a dog or a cat, let alone crossing a jungle, when you are the size of a barbie doll! It was the first science fiction film shot using three-strip Technicolor and it looks stunning. Amazons (1986) - Roger Corman produced several films in Argentina in the 1980s, including the swords 'n' sandals (and not much else in the way of costumes) about the legendary all-female warrior tribe. "This is a definite "so bad it's good" movie. The acting is nothing short of atrocious, the fight scenes are incredibly clumsy, the dialogue about equal to an Ed Wood movie and the facial expressions are priceless!" says $TEVE McD's IMDb review. It is hard to disagree. Tanya's Island (1982) - Tanya tries to escape her abusive artist boyfriend by dreaming herself away to a fantasy island, inhabited by a blue-eyed man-ape. But her monkey-lovin' enrages her BF and love triangle ensues. Stars Canadian singer-model Vanity, known for the Vanity 6 song "Nasty Girl" by Prince. She went from 'Nasty' to Born Again Christian after this. There are also plenty of other Fantasy films already on Cultpix. Be sure to catch all the musical action in our Fantasy-tic Spotify playlist.

The Chumps venture to Mike Kripke's basement to cover the third installment of Arnold's iconic saga. Luke & Corrye wonder: Did Nick Stahl and Claire Danes get the job done? What would James Cameron have done differently here? Did we get boned on the finale? WAs the new villainous Terminator TOO tough? PLUS: What Luke and Corrye DIDN'T KNOW about HBO until this podcast.
Arnold's back (no pun intended), but he's a good guy. Linda Hamilton's also back: and she's jacked. The Chumps trade thoughts on Robert Patrick's performance, James Cameron's genius, whether or not Sarah Connor should have gone over the edge, the liquid metal theatrics, etc. PLUS: Linda Hamilton has a twin, who was in the film! And the kid from nowhere, Edward "John Connor" Furlong.

O no? Terminator 2: Judgment DayWritten, directed and produced by James CameronStarring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, and Edward Furlong.Released July 3, 1991Budget: $98mBox office: $520.9mGross: $422.9mPlot:Intro: LA 2029 Humans battling the machines. Voiceover 3 billion lives lost on April 29, 1997 - Judgement day.S: all practical effects, no CGI-the music!-And then the Terminator coming through the flames at the end of the intro epic In 1995, John Connor is living in Los Angeles with his foster parents. Hismother, Sarah Connor, had been preparing him throughout his childhood for hisfuture role as the human resistance leader against Skynet, the artificialintelligence that will be given control of the United States' nuclear missiles andinitiate a nuclear holocaust on August 29, 1997, known thereafter as "JudgmentDay". However, Sarah was arrested and imprisoned at a mental hospital afterattempting to bomb a computer factory. In 2029, Skynet sends a newTerminator, designated as T-1000, back in time to kill John. The T-1000 is anadvanced prototype made out of liquid metal (referred to as "mimetic polyalloy")that gives it the ability to take on the shape and appearance of almost anything ittouches, and to transform its arms into blades and other shapes at will. TheT-1000 arrives, kills a policeman, and assumes his identity; he also uses thepolice computer to track down John. Meanwhile, the future John Connor hassent back a reprogrammed Model 101 Terminator to protect his younger self. S: T101 entrance badass, little spoiled by “Bad to the Bone”-T1000 intro very mincing. We also don't know what kind of Terminator he is, yet-Early 90's point: foster dad smoking inside. Weird.-John Conners friend is Danny Cooksey, who also played Bobby Budnick on Nickelodeon's show Salute Your Shorts from 91-93. The Terminator and the T-1000 converge on John in a shopping mall, and achase ensues after which John and the Terminator escape together on amotorcycle. Fearing that the T-1000 will kill Sarah in order to get to him, Johnorders the Terminator to help free her, after discovering that the Terminator mustfollow his orders. They encounter Sarah as she is escaping from the hospital, although she is initially reluctant to trust the Model 101. After the trio escapefrom the T-1000 in a police car, the Terminator informs John and Sarah aboutSkynet's history.[a] Sarah learns that the man most directly responsible forSkynet's creation is Miles Bennett Dyson, a Cyberdyne Systems engineerworking on a revolutionary new microprocessor that will form the basis forSkynet. S:-Sarah Conner is 29-Note when T1000 is questioning foster parents, dogs barking in background.-I like how both terminators are stalking/pursing John. We're not sure of their intention, yet.-brilliant how they used corporate coverup to eliminate any plot holes from the previous film.*MALL:*-The Afterburner video game (which was an awesome game) John is playing says “The End” as the terminators zero in.-when the terminator pulls the shotgun from the flowers why does he have to cock it? Why isn't it already loaded?-I love the sound design of the liquid metal terminator-The music, pacing, acting, and editing, make this first fight between the terminators perfect. Zero emotion.*CHASE:*-TOW TRUCK OFF THE BRIDGE!!-Is it normal for all the broken down/abandoned cars in the drainage things?-T101 doing the swing reload on the motorcycle = AWESOME.-How does a heavy tow truck bumping a 10-12 year old on a dirt bike not knock him over?!-Biggest complaint about the whole section: sometimes you can tell it's stunt actors.-Also, T1000 walking through flames = epic.GETTING AWAY:-followed by a LOT of exposition.-foster parents on phone, dogs barking again.-Sarah plays it REALLY smart when being questioned.-90's lingo: “Did you call MUWAH a dipshit?”SARAH ESCAPE:-I tried picking locks with paper clips bc of this movie. Never worked.-T1000 coming off the floor, awesome.-Guard has a full house, 2 aces and 3 diamonds.-Sound design, how the footsteps change when T1000 changes from guard to original form.*MENTAL HOSPITAL ESCAPE*-Iconic line: “I swear I will not kill anybody” then shoots the guard, “He'll live”-Sarah's fear seeing the T101 = excellent-T1000 going through the bars 10 years BEFORE The Rock and his CGI scorpion king in the Mummy Returns. James Cameron ahead of his time.-When did John get all the ammo?-like most sound design, but T1000 sounds like he's got a silencer, and shooting a shotgun and 45 in an elevator, they'd be deaf.-Lots of exposition, Dyson, sky net and cyberdyne. Sarah gathers weapons from an old friend and plans to flee with John to Mexico, but after having a nightmare about Judgment Day, she instead sets out to killDyson in order to prevent Judgment Day from occurring. Finding him at hishome, she wounds him but finds herself unable to kill him in front of his family.John and the Terminator arrive and inform Dyson of the future consequences ofhis work. They learn that much of his research has been reverse engineeredfrom the damaged CPU and the right arm of the previous Terminator whoattacked Sarah back in 1984. Convincing him that these items and his designsmust be destroyed, they break into the Cyberdyne building, retrieve the CPUand the arm, and set explosives to destroy Dyson's lab. The police arrive andDyson is fatally shot, but he rigs an improvised dead man's switch thatdetonates the explosives when he dies. The T-1000 relentlessly pursues thesurviving trio, eventually cornering them in a steel mill. S:MEXICO:-in the car, lots of exposition, 90's slang galore: no problemo, chill out dickwad.-Background and building Sarah Conner as more than helpless waitress from T1-Sarah realizes T101 is the best father John could have.-Sarah's dream sequence was amazing. All practical effects. So well done. (Movie Magic show)DYSON HOUSE:-Why couldn't she kill Dyson? No fate quote? Not taking the boys father away? She knows someone else will make skynet happen anyway?-lots more exposition.CYBERDYNE:-A child can use a backpack computer to “hack” a computer engineering company lock? Ok.-Why does the T1000 need a helmet?-T101 WITH A MINI GUN!!-Mp5, iconic 90's cop/bad guy gun.-T101 hallway walk, mixture of real and fake. (Movie magic show)CHASE:-Impressive helicopter pilot skills-Love this is all full sized, real vehicles, not CGI/green screen. All practical.-Awes9me progression of T1000 freezing and breaking.-Hasta la vista, baby. The T-1000 and Model 101 fight and the more advanced model seriouslydamages and shuts down the Model 101. However, unbeknownst to the T-1000,the Model 101 brings itself back online using an alternate power source. TheT-1000 nearly kills John and Sarah but the Model 101 takes it by surprise andblasts it into a crucible of molten steel with a grenade launcher, dissolving anddestroying it. John tosses the arm and CPU of the original Terminator into thevat as well. As Sarah expresses relief that the ordeal is over, the Terminatorexplains that to ensure that it is not used for reverse engineering it must itself bedestroyed too. It asks Sarah to assist in lowering it into the vat of molten steel, since it is unable to "self-terminate". Although John begs and eventually ordersthe Terminator to reconsider, it makes the decision to defy him, bids themfarewell and hugs a tearful John before it is lowered into the vat, giving a finalthumbs-up as it disappears into the vat. John and Sarah drive down a highwayand Sarah says in a voice over, “The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it forthe first time with a sense of hope. Because if a machine, a Terminator, canlearn the value of human life, maybe we can, too." S:-Love all the little details with the T1000 during the fight. Morphing, silver shimmer when he crushes the T101s arm.-amazing fight choreography-Again, shotgun isn't loaded?! Why is Sarah just now loading it?-When The T1000 crushes T101 face, how awesome and real it looked.-John being a dumbass and falling for the T1000 impersonating his mom?-Sarah shoots T1000 to the edge and runs out. Why not run and drop kick him over the fucking edge?-T101 being more “human” “I need a vacation” and “Terminated”-The thumbs up and computer shut down… classic and a dad move.-Heartstring ending. Epic theme music. -For a “happy” ending, they forget Sarah is an escaped criminal, they blew up cyberdyne, sure they MAY HAVE saved the future (which, future movies show us they didn't) but they're still wanted criminals.

Ever getting that sinking, Singularity blues? The 21st Century is shaping up to be that much-prophecised age of exponential change for the human condition. If catastrophic climate change doesn't get us, then we're well on track to building a robotopia. But is a world where all basic jobs are done by 'bots a good thing? Are we destined for an opulent Star Trek future, or something more like Elysium with the ruling class hovering above the rest of us? Join Cap, Jess, Jon, and Doug as we journey deep into sci-tech - evaluating the latest variations on the automated man and considering what futures a robotic workforce will create. Maybe hard-working, red-blooded Americans will feel the bite of cold steel and the gnashing of corporate teeth. Or perhaps we'll be able to survive the paradigm shift and humanity can focus on evolving itself through exploration, creation, and education. Now is the precipice of the coming age; take a plunge with us! Hopefully we're not diving headfirst into a Cyberdyne-led extinction! Ducks, Dolls and Divine Robots: designing our futures with computingA public lecture by Dr Genevieve BellWe have relationships with technology – we always have had. And these relationships have regularly strayed beyond the merely functional, or rational. Whether anthropomorphising all manner of objects from steamships to guitars, or systematically attacking and breaking machines out of fear and loathing, we have had strong emotional connections with technology. Furthermore, this emotionality is not only borne out of daily activity, it also has its origins in the realm of fiction, myth and even legend. As such we can tell a story where Excalibur, the Luddites, The Turing Test and Cyberdyne share a common genealogy – they are all about our relationships with technology.Today we inhabit a world in which there are many pieces of technology in our lives, our homes and our places of work, worship and leisure. Early mechanized objects like looms, pianolas and wireless radios have given way to digitally connected computational devices, but have we developed a new emotional register with which to engage with these objects? In this talk, Genevieve offers a meditation on the nature of our relationships with computing, locating them within this larger conversation, and offering a much wider space for human-computer relationships to flourish.
