The American Dental Association calls the mineral fluoride "nature's cavity fighter." But the practice of adding fluoride to drinking water has long been a target of conspiracy theories and opponents of public health measures. Robert F. Still University's Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health, and Dr. Poonam Jain, a professor and vice dean at ATSU and the St. Louis Dental Center, discuss fluoride, the scrutiny over its use, and the importance of dental health.
President elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services wants cities and towns to stop adding fluoride to drinking water. St. Louis on the Air host Elaine Cha spoke with Dwight McLeod, dean of A.T. Still University's Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health, about what fluoride has meant to public health.

Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Andrea O'Brien, the Director of Residential Admissions at A.T. Still University. They talk about communicating your why in medical school applications and the mistakes to avoid. [00:57] Introducing Andrea O'Brien [02:27] Ways to Stand Out as a Med School Applicant [08:21] Med School Application Mistakes [17:25] A.T. Still University's Waitlist System [19:09] When to Submit Your Medical School Application [22:51] What Andrea O'Brien Would Change About Healthcare Know Your Why for Pursuing Medicine Medicine is a difficult profession, so schools would like to see your authenticity and passion come through your application. Accumulating experience over the long term can really set you apart from other applicants. Medical schools want to see that you've been preparing for it not just in the last few months. Community service and cultural competency are also things you want to highlight in your resume. “Know Your Why” by Simon Sinek is a book that can help you communicate your motive for pursuing medicine. Avoid These Mistakes in Your Med School Application Choose schools where you're going to feel most comfortable and supported. Align your own goals to the school's mission. If you have encountered a challenging situation which affected your application, be sure to address it. The admissions committee notices any unusual changes and would appreciate an explanation. Another mistake to avoid is rushing to submit your application. Take all the time you need to build a strong resume. Rejected or waitlisted students would do well to follow any feedback and advice given to improve their application. Best Time to Apply for Medical School As a general rule, it is always better to submit your application sooner rather than later. Applications that are severely lacking may be rejected immediately. It's wise to let the school know if you're retaking the MCAT so they can wait for your new score. Submitting your application at the very end of the cycle would be disadvantageous because by then, most slots would already be filled. Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Deanna Hughes, the Director of Admissions at A.T. Still University. They talk about building a competitive medical school application and the faux pas to avoid. [01:01] Introducing Deanna Hughes [02:51] How Competitive are Medical School Applications? [06:02] Strengthen Your Med School Application [12:27] What NOT to Do in Your Application [15:23] What Deanna Hughes Would Change About Healthcare Limited Admissions into Medical School At A.T. Still University, the most number of applicants they've received is from 8,000 students. However, they only have 150 available slots. The admissions process is very competitive, so most students would do well to start preparing as early as high school or college. Non-traditional applicants are also encouraged to apply, as medical schools also value diversity. How to Build a Strong Portfolio Each medical school has its own unique mission statement. Before anything else, students should choose schools that align with their own values and mission. Pre-meds can start to build a competitive resume by shadowing both MD and DO physicians. Getting letters of recommendation from both doctors is advantageous. Being a member or leader in pre-med organizations is also great for your portfolio. In addition to clinical work, community service makes for a well-rounded application. All these experiences and extracurricular activities are important, but don't forget to keep an eye on your grades. Mistakes to Avoid in Your Application Students might think that mentioning faculty members or staff can give them a leg up in admissions, but it actually has the opposite effect. Name dropping is generally frowned upon. Another practice that might hurt your application is gushing about a school's location instead of the school itself and its values. What you want to highlight is how aligned you are with your chosen school's values and mission statement, making you the perfect fit in their environment. D.O. or Do Not: The Osteopathic Physician's Journey for Premed & Medical Students
Today on the DO or Do Not podcast, we have Dr. Margaret Wilson, Dean of ATSU Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. ATSU is the oldest/founding osteopathic school and is located in Kirksville, Missouri. We first interviewed Dr. Wilson 2 years ago on episode 21 and are excited to have her back on the podcast. Today's episode is focused on the pre-medical perspective. We will discuss with Dr. Wilson topics such as what makes a great osteopathic school candidate. She will talk about non-traditional applicants and answer questions such as “is it ever too late to apply to medical school.” She will talk about what makes her school special and why students should consider ATSUCOM. Finally, she discusses why many pre-medical students do not know about opportunities in osteopathic medicine and what DOs can do to improve understanding of the profession. Especially for new medical school applicants, understanding the field of osteopathic medicine and the DO degree can be difficult due to ongoing challenges in public awareness. In this podcast, we take a clinical direction with our questions for Dr. Wilson to shed light on these topics. Dr. Wilson discusses some of the current challenges in bringing public awareness to the DO profession along with her personal experiences that have shaped her as an educator and an osteopathic physician. In this podcast, she will provide illumination to the audience on the DO profession for the general public and interested premeds who want to join the DO community. We hope you enjoy this episode.

In this episode of the Brawn Body Health and Fitness Podcast, Dan is joined by Dr. Matt Midkiff, PT, DPT, CSCS to discuss various "pet peeves" in the world of Physical Therapy. The two discuss a variety of topics ranging from "HUM" clinics to lack of progression of exercises to inability to engage with a patient/client and so much more! As noted - the purpose of the episode is to shed light on areas that the PT field can improve on to help the profession evolve and move forward! Dr. Matt Midkiff grew up in Asheville, North Carolina then moved to California after being recruited to play soccer for Westmont College in Santa Barbra. After his family relocated to the Phoenix area, he decided to attend A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in Mesa to obtain his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Matt's interest in physical therapy stems from his experiences as a young athlete. After dislocating his shoulder twice while training, he had to undergo surgery. However, this turned into a positive— his good experience with physical therapy post-surgery made him realize the career would be a good fit for him. When not working, Matt enjoys working out and competes in natural bodybuilding shows. He loves spending time with his wife and three kids, and has also coached soccer in the community for 20 years. He is working toward making his Gilbert physical therapy clinic a leading force in treating and preventing knee and ankle soccer injuries, especially among female athletes. He is also building a golf business at the clinic, and is a certified Golf Performance Specialist by Nike and the Gray Institute. His goal for Foothills in the future is to create an amazing patient experience that people enjoy coming to; he calls it the Cheers of physical therapy. “People come back to the clinic a year after they've finished physical therapy just to say hi,” he says. “We want people to enjoy working with our staff, and the staff to enjoy being there. That's what sets us apart from the rest.” For more on Matt, you can find him on Instagram @sportsptmidkiff_fit or Tiktok @sports_pt_fit_midkiff To keep up to date with everything we are currently doing on the podcast, be sure to subscribe and follow @brawnbody on social media! Bob and Dina do a Leadville 100 race recap with Don Reichelt who is an elite trail and ultra runner from Fairplay, Colorado. Don returned to the start line of the Leadville 100 after a DNF in 2021 due to his lungs shutting down (from the numerous Colorado wildfires that affected air quality). And while this year he earned the big buckle with a sub-25 hour finish, it was not the race he had planned and trained for. You'll hear his story as he breaks down the race details through a series of questions posed by Bob and Dina as they piece together what happened and attempt to provide answers. And we do talk poop, dry heaving, and crying. We chat about: · Don's food and fluid intake in the week prior to the Leadville 100 · His race morning breakfast · Don's fueling and fluid plan and how his body wasn't fully cooperating from the start · How he made the decision to keep moving forward rather than DNFing despite extremely low calories and fluid intake with incessant GI distress · The emotional and mental battles throughout the race · Potential contributors and factors that may have played a role in what he experienced Quotes from Don: “Ultra running is a cruel mistress because you can control for a lot of things and then that one thing that you think you controlled for just goes wrong, like the nutrition.” “Whenever you're having a bad race as an elite racer, you can make a choice. You can pull the plug or you can move the goalpost of what success is.” More about our guest: Don Reichelt currently holds a 100-mile trail best of 13:16 which he set in November 2020 at the Tunnel Hill 100 and was the third-fastest trail 100-mile run in North America during 2020. He has finished on the podium at the Badwater 135, aka “The World's Toughest Footrace” and also has had the honor of representing the United States as a member of the 2017 U.S. Spartathlon team, racing 153 miles from Athens to Sparta. Don also was invited to compete at the 2019 Backyard World Championship. Additional top finishes include: · 1st place 2022 Cold Water Rumble 52 Mile · 1st place 2021 Salt Flats Endurance Run 50K · 1st place 2020 Cold Water Rumble 20 Mile · 1st place 2019 Lean Horse 100 mile · 2nd Place 2017 Keys 100 mile · Leadville Leadman Finisher Don works for Oura as a Learning and Development Specialist and is studying part-time for his Doctor of Health Sciences in Global Health through A.T. Still University. He lives with his wife, Amy, and their 3 dogs (Wrigley, Bean, and Sprout). Dr. John McRae, DNP, MPH, NP-C grew up in Idaho. After high school went to university of Idaho with aspirations of becoming a dentist. Started a biology degree. Transferred to Boise State University and finished biology degree in 2003. At that point tried to get into dental school and was unsuccessful. Decided to get a Masters degree in Public Health. Went to A.T. Still University for degree. During that program tried a second time to get into Dental school...again failed. Finished Masters degree in 2007 and tried one final time to get into dental school and failed. Started looking for public health jobs and noticed the only ones available were for nurses. So in 2008 started BSN program. Fell in love with patient care. Finished degree in 2011. Started as a bedside nurse with aspirations of climbing the corporate ladder. Very quickly was jaded by bureaucracy in healthcare. Decided corporate was not for me. Went back to school for DNP as a nurse practitioner. Finished that program in 2016 (3 years). 6 months later in Jan of 2017 started my own business. Got into aesthetics and found a passion for that. In 2021 launched Dr. John training brand which has been successful. In 2022 planning on starting another business focused on breathing. Married for almost 20 years. Have three children...boy, girl, boy ages 15, 13, 11. Have a dog, cat, and a hedgehog. Life is good! Dr. Terri Edwards is the Founder of NewSound Solutions and an experienced audiologist. She has a passion for educating people on hearing loss and providing solutions to increase their quality of life. Over her career of more than 25 years, she has developed specialties in hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus. Dr. Edwards earned her doctorate from the Arizona School of Health and Sciences at A.T. Still University and her master's from California State University, Los Angeles. She has been married for more than 30 years and is the proud mother of two grown children. In this episode… While the research is new, there is a strong and clear connection between hearing loss and brain function. Hearing loss is already a progressive degenerative disease — but it can also cause atrophy in the brain. When left untreated, it can lead to substantial memory loss and even dementia. It's a significant problem that goes far beyond not being able to hear the TV. Slowing or reversing these effects takes some serious treatment, but few are willing to go through with it. So, how do you get patients comfortable with taking their hearing seriously? Dr. Mark Syms sits down with Dr. Terri Edwards, the Founder of NewSound Solutions, to see how she educates her patients and gets them comfortable. The two share amazing stories of hearing recovery, how to answer the major objections that patients have, and why proper hearing is so important. They also dive into Dr. Edwards' personal journey and how a childhood friend drove her to help others through audiology. All of this on today's episode of the ListenUp! Podcast.

What an interesting interview with physical therapist and pelvic floor health specialist, Dr. Kimberly Bryant. Kim's areas of expertise include prevention and wellness, pelvic pain, low back pain, prolapse (pelvic pressure), bowel health, pain with intercourse, incontinence, painful menstrual cycles, and prenatal/postpartum care. Her goal is to empower women to take their wellness into their own hands as they discover their personal healing path. This was not a specialty back when I had children and I think even though this is an area that is now more well known, many women still haven't heard of this or know that this is available. Even lower back issues can be traced to pelvic issues so be sure to reach out to Kim or someone with her training to help you - no matter your age (older or younger) because many times problems happen long after having children and not necessarily immediately post-partum. Dr. Bryant earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ in 2009. She opened her private practice, Thrive Pelvic Health and Wellness in 2017 to provide holistic rehabilitation and wellness care for women with a focus on pregnancy and postpartum support. She provides in person and tele-health treatment sessions. When away from the office, Kim enjoys spending time with her two young boys, husband, and running out on the AZ mountain trails with friends. Tim Fearon, Lead Faculty of Phoenix Manual Therapy & Owner of Fearon Physical Therapy, comes onto HET Podcast to talk about development and fostering psychomotor skill and clinical reasoning in healthcare professionals and much more! Tim is celebrating 40 years as a clinician. Tim's Message to the PT Profession Physical therapy students enter their educational pursuits seeking the skill required to treat patients. The successful attainment of the degree leads the student to a level of unconscious incompetence which patients will rapidly awaken the intellectually honest amongst them to. The rising clinician then begins to seek the path to conscious competence. This is where the current system lets the aspiring clinician down. The self motivated and driven student finds a way to create a unique mentoring path that works for them. This is our system for creating the future of the profession. The primary education is delivered by skillful academicians who are in turn fed by skillful researchers. This can only supply the student with knowledge, not the skill required to apply it, question it, build from it and master the interface between that which is known and that which we are learning through the skill & artistic application of our intellect. Until our educational process balances the scales between research, academics, and skill we will continue to produce a preponderance of mediocre clinicians and as such a mediocre professional body. The father of EBM, David Sackett warned a long time ago “Without clinical expertise, practice risks becoming tyrannized by evidence, for even excellent external evidence may be inapplicable to, or inappropriate for an individual patient.” No one chooses to attend the performance of a violinist who has mastered the reading and writing of sheet music yet never devoted time to picking up the instrument in the mindful practice of summoning the sound of it's music from the skills required to bring all three components to life.
