Ah, the moment you've all been pretending to wait for—Gnar Couch Podshow Episode 153 is dropping, and it's about as stable as a two-legged chair tied to a downcountry bike. Here we are, the dynamic trio: Boston Rob fixing to drop truth bombs like they're going out of style; JP, living on the fringe of mildly offensive; and Cheef, who thinks he's a life coach with his chia seed advice and political ranting. Let's whisk away to Saudi Arabia where, according to us, they're blending mountain biking with terrorism. We give Pinkbike some chatter, then instantly regret it. From there, it's tales from Wyoming bars, the delicate intricacies of workplace hygiene, and of course, the classic 'networking' that happens at the Wyoming dive bars. We're Renaissance men, really. Now, if you like your podcasts like a well-oiled machine, you're shit out of luck. Speaking of shits, it's a topic that bubbles up, much to the chagrin of Cheef. Vernon Felton is a bit of a legend in the bike world. His history is illustrious working for years as a journalist at many of the major bike media outlets. I first met Vernon when he was working for Peterson publishing, I think back in the 1990s. Vernon eventually found himself working for the biggest brand names in the bicycle industry. Now as US director of bike Product Development at Canyon Bicycles. He has a unique role at one of the big and influential bicycle companies. He helps decide as part of a team. What goes on to a new product, advises on what consumers want, and also tells the engineers how the bikes ride and what needs to be done to improve them. In this episode, Alex talks with him about how Kenyan and other companies approached not just the bikes, but bikes in general, what e-bikes mean to Canyon as a brand, and what will happen with e-bikes over the next few years. Without further ado, here's Alex and Vernon rodeo.
We finally have our full crew of Nerds back on this week's episode, and boy, was there a lot to discuss. There's a new custom bike show in the works for 2023 called Made, which will be based in Portland, Oregon, and will be held outdoors. No one will ever complain about another opportunity to see beautiful custom bikes in person, but are they just eye candy, or should more people actually consider buying one instead of a stock machine? Upstart brand Aerosensor also has a new portable device that claims to deliver aerodynamic drag data in real time, and we wonder what LeBron James's US$30m investment in Canyon Bicycles will mean moving forward. And seeing as how we finally have Caley back, all of our answers for this week's Ask a Mechanic segment — naturally — involves a hammer.
LeBron James makes a big investment in Canyon Bicycles, Apple notches an $83 billion quarter, Adidas and the NHL part ways, and the UEFA Women's European Championship final is expected to be an economic boon to the U.K.
After five years of racing with the Team Novo Nordisk development team, Logan Phippen made the step up to the pro team for 2021, realizing a long held dream and becoming the team's only US pro rider. Valuable experience racing against WorldTour opponents was gained at the Tour of Turkey, Baloise Tour of Belgium and the Tour du Limousin as Phippen looks to push on in 2022. A challenging 2020 due to the Covid-19 restrictions and racing embargo meant for a shortened calendar for Phippen, but 11th overall at the Tour of Mevlana in Turkey after an all round selfless team performance confirmed Phippen's development had come full circle and the time was right to move up a level. 2019 saw Phippen perform well in races like the Joe Martin Stage Race, Vuelta Independencia Nacional and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay, but injury and illness blighted his calendar and limited his race days. One of four children, from a young age Phippen was involved in highly competitive endurance athletics, including Nordic skiing, running, and mountain biking. He fell in love with cycling while watching the European races on television and swiftly began harboring his own ambitions of becoming a cyclist. He promptly found progress racing with Hanger 15 Bicycles (formerly Canyon Bicycles) on the US domestic Pro Road Tour (PRT) circuit and gaining valuable experience in teamwork and leadership. In 2016, Phippen's life changed drastically when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That spring, he grew weak and frail and noticed he didn't have the energy to keep up with his friends while out riding. The weekend after his 24th birthday, he saw how horrifically thin he'd become, and after a conversation with his father, Phippen went to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with diabetes. The diagnosis never disheartened Phippen as he knew it was a condition that he could manage. With the help from his medical team, he knew he could live the same active life and was back on the bike within a week. Because he had already seen Team Novo Nordisk riders in the peloton, he reached out to the team immediately to see if they had a spot for him on their elite mountain bike team. Instead, Team Novo Nordisk offered him a chance to race for the development squad, and Phippen instantly jumped at the opportunity. Phippen experienced a breakthrough season in 2018, earning 14 top 10 finishes including eight podium finishes with two wins and one overall victory. His proudest result came at the UCI Europe Tour of Bihor in Romania where he finished 11th in the individual time trial. Off the bike, Phippen loves literature, writing, and meditation. He says his life looks completely different than it did barely three years ago and loves being back racing full time and taking life by the horns.
This episode's guest is Jeremiah Bishop. As a professional cross-country mountain bike racer, he won gold medals and national championship titles before venturing into ultra-endurance racing where his talent was unleashed. When mountain bike stage racing took off in the US, Jeremiah dominated with an unmatched streak of wins at all the major events. Jeremiah went on to establish a multi-surface Gran Fondo event that preceded what would become an explosive gravel cycling movement. A cycling coach, events consultant, and athlete ambassador for Canyon Bicycles, he loves mapping new routes, interpreting data, and testing limits. In his most recent venture, founding member of the Impossible Route team, he is the mastermind behind the routes, technical details, equipment, and expedition logistics. The Impossible Route documentary series is all about capturing the story and the adventure of cyclists trying to accomplish what might be considered IMPOSSIBLE. Listen in as we reflect on this past year, and how retailers can provide value and keep the stoke level high.Support the show (https://www.nbda.com/donate)

As Amazon Prime and Uber, along with other businesses committed to bringing convenience and personalization to today’s shopper, Chris Guillemet, CEO and co-founder of velofix, was busy with his two partners pioneering the mobile bike shop solution. That was six years ago, and a lot has changed with today’s omnichannel consumer and cyclist. In today’s Channel Mastery podcast, Guillemet and I discuss this evolution in the context of the future of the mobile bike shop. Where the channel is headed in the near future is not what you might expect. Bike shops are still a strong go-to channel for today’s omnichannel cyclist, without a doubt, but cyclists are also consumers, and are trained everyday by the likes of Amazon, Instacart, Lyft and other friction-removing, convenience-driven businesses. Consumers today are demanding - they want choice, they want personalization and they want to save time. And they don’t have patience for anything less than that, it seems. In fact, just this week, Amazon Prime members threw a fit because of slower-than-usual delivery times. Guillemet and his partners are not in the business of taking down the IBD - far from it. Instead, they’re hell-bent on serving more cyclists - and consumers - in the way they’re used to being served by brands today. They want to make it easier to ride bikes - whether that’s for competitive amateur cyclists refusing to lose a day of training or commuters committed to getting around their city safely and efficiently by bike. In today’s show, you’ll learn about opportunity. Guillemet and his partners only see runway with cycling and closed on a round of funding early in 2019 with a group who believes the same. In this episode, you’ll learn about velofix’s new U.S. expansion, which includes a U.S. headquarters located in Austin, Texas and an all-star team committed to building an exceptional and consistent end-consumer experience. Velofix is continuing to evolve its innovation and technology platform and brings a fresh take on lifestyle franchise opportunity for its partners. We also talk about the momentum behind brand relationships like the velofix/Canyon Bicycles partnership and the incredible opportunity for cycling technicians who want to run their own business. Talking to Chris for this episode of Channel Mastery sparked a think bigger mentality for me. He and his team are continually looking one step ahead in everything they do. Chris Guillemet is CEO and Co-Founder of velofix. Chris brought over 20 years of business experience to Velofix. His Senior Management experience includes growing a company to $90 million and a successful IPO, launching an Internet startup that has raised $45 million in financing and driving growth at a $30 billion dollar consumer packaged goods company. Chris is also a graduate of the SFU Executive Management program. Chris is a 2x Ironman Canada finisher, ran a 2.54 at the Boston Marathon in 2010 and returned to Triathlons by winning his age group at Ironman 70.3 Oceanside in 2019.

Show up every day. Whatever it is that you are going after in life, show up every day to take the next step. We know this simple recipe works but simple does not always translate to easy. Every time we show up we create momentum in the universe for our life. Whether you are an age group athlete or professional, we are all subject to the human condition in which motivation waivers and belief in self will rise and fall like a kid on a trampoline. As we gain more experience from showing up, we gain confidence. The physical evidence shows up and we reap the fruits of our labor. We know in order to reach our goals, we must face up to everything that challenges us and in this episode, we dive into the wisdom of two veteran professionals in the sport of triathlon. Carrie "Cazz" Lester and Scottie DeFilippis share their wisdom with the YT community as they open up about their differences as athletes, Scottie being the "trainer" and Carrie being the "racer", tips for staying present and not getting caught up in the hype of the mind. These two athletes have seen great success in their careers and are now methodically looking towards their future as athletes and coaches with Keep It Simple. We are grateful to YTP guest Jess Cerra for connecting us and to Canyon Bicycles for hosting such a great event for our communities to come together.
