Carol Hutchins wrapped up her 38th season at the helm of the University of Michigan softball program in 2022. The winningest coach in NCAA softball history, Hutchins has guided the Wolverines to an NCAA title and 22 Big Ten Conference titles and solidified Michigan among the top softball programs in the country. She was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. With a career record of 1,707-551-5 over her 39 total seasons as a NCAA head coach, Hutchins is the winningest coach in NCAA softball history. "Hutch" has been a part of the Michigan softball program since 1983 when she joined the staff as an assistant coach under Bob DeCarolis. She moved into the head coach position in 1985 and, in each of her 38 head coaching seasons, has continued Michigan's tradition of softball success. Michigan has never suffered a losing season in program history. Hutchins has led the Wolverines to the Women's College World Series on 12 occasions, and, in 2005, the Maize and Blue became the first program east of the Mississippi River to claim the NCAA national championship when it defeated UCLA in the championship series. Michigan's record-setting 2005 season was the culmination of two decades of dedication for Hutchins and her current and former players and coaches. In that magical season, Michigan set records in a number of categories, including: First softball national championship • A program-best 65 wins • A program-best 32 consecutive victories (spanning 47 days, from Feb. 13 to March 30) • First No. 1 ranking (March 22) • First No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament • First victory over a top-ranked opponent (6-2 win over No. 1 Arizona) Before becoming Michigan's third softball coach, Hutchins spent one year as the head coach at Ferris State University (1982). While at Ferris, she led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II National Tournament and was selected Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Hutchins was an assistant coach at Indiana University (1981) -- under legendary coach Gayle Blevins -- and at Michigan (1983-84). Hutchins founded the Michigan Softball Academy in 2010 in conjunction with the program's annual "Pink Game." The academy is a one-night on-field clinic for adults that raises funds for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer organization. Hutchins and the Michigan softball program initially formed an affiliation with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for its annual walk in 2007. Since then, the Wolverines have raised more than $1,000,000 for the American Cancer Society. https://mgoblue.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/carol-hutchins/5645

Things discussed: Salute to Carol Hutchins. She surprised us all, and deserved to. Immediate situation isn't a concern. The program's long-term health is fantastic, and she built that. Women's sports at Michigan are fantastic, and she built them. She became the winningest coach in Michigan athletics history when I was in college in the early 2000s. Her name is up there with Yost. Who are we to have opinions on when she retires? August football Financial windfall from conference, paying the refs? Brian: will be the same people. Seth: not long-term. It's not a profession right now but a lifestyle, so you're working out of a tiny pool. Want to see honest UFRs of their officiating, like MLB now provides. Fall camp: situation sounds like exactly what we thought it was. Eyabi Anoma: Further scouting. TJ Guy: OLB vs DE. Can he crash? We won't know if they can stop the run until Iowa because nobody is going to run until UConn. NIL players' collective: 18% off the top seems too high for that to be a good deal.

The jurors who returned the verdict Wednesday agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that her privacy was invaded when they took and shared photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her grief after losing her husband and daughter. NCAASB – Michigan’s Hutchins retires as NCAA softball victory leader Carol Hutchins has retired after 38 seasons as Michigan’s softball coach after winning a record number of games. The school made the announcement Wednesday, signaling the end of a career that included 1,707 wins. Bonnie Tholl was promoted to lead the program after she serving as Hutchins’ top assistant for 29 years. NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 3 Tonight Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:00 p.m. San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Hall of Fame Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson dies at 87 Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday. The MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the Vikings in January 1970 had been in declining health for years. He entered hospice care on Aug. 12. “Lenny the Cool” went into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He also was inducted as a broadcaster in 2012. Dawson spent several decades working on local TV and radio broadcasts while also doing color analysis for NBC and hosting HBO’s iconic "Inside the NFL.” The Chiefs intend to honor him during their preseason finale against Green Bay on Thursday night. Len Dawson was 87. NFL – Lions Preview – Lions may have double digits in losses for 5th year in a row The Detroit Lions seem destined for another rough season. If the defense struggles, it will likely lead to at least 10 losses for the fifth straight year, and second in a row under coach Dan Campbell. Rookie defensive end Aiden Hutchinson appears to be a player to build around, but there isn’t much help behind him right now. The Lions should be able to move the ball and score behind a strong offensive line in Jared Goff’s second season with the team. The veteran quarterback is surrounded by an improved group of receivers, a solid duo of running backs and standout tight end T.J. Hockenson. NFL – Bears Preview – Bears enter new era, look to make jump under Poles, Eberflus The Chicago Bears are prepared to enter a new era under new general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Chicago comes into the season with few established playmakers on offense and questions to answer on defense, starting with the opener against San Francisco on Sept. 11. The Bears went 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years. They are counting on quarterback Justin Fields to make big strides after a shaky rookie year. On defense, the Bears had an offseason contract standoff with star linebacker Roquan Smith that ended without a new deal. Golf – PGA – Top PGA Tour players to commit to 20-event big money slate The PGA Tour is making its boldest response yet to the rival Saudi-funded league. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced a plan for the best players to commit to a 20-tournament schedule starting next year. That means they will be competing against one another up to 17 times and maybe more. That involves elevating four additional tournaments that will offer $20 million or more to go along with the tournaments already announced. Monahan says top players will be determined by a new Player Impact Program criteria. The PIP will double in money to $100 million. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 6, San Francisco Giants 1 Chicago White Sox 5, Baltimore Orioles 3 Chicago Cubs 7, St. Louis Cardinals 1 Tigers 6, Giants 1 – Manning throws 6 scoreless, Tigers beat Giants 6-1 for split Matt Manning threw six scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers scored all six of their runs in the fifth to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-1 and split a two-game series. Manning allowed five hits, walked none and struck out a career-high eight in his first win since last Sept. 15 against Milwaukee. Victor Reyes and Willi Castro each drove in two runs while Kody Clemens and Harold Castro each drove in one with two out in the bottom of the fifth. All six runs were charged to Logan Webb, who was pulled after Harold Castro’s single made it 4-0. White Sox 5, Orioles 3 – Giolito, Sheets lift White Sox to 5-3 win over Orioles  Lucas Giolito pitched impressively into the seventh inning, Gavin Sheets twice came through with the bases loaded and Yoán Moncada pulled off a slick double play to help the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Giolito allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Then Kendall Graveman was helped out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh thanks to Moncada’s play at third. The bases were loaded with one out and Chicago up 3-1. Moncada lunged to his right to snag a grounder. Then he touched third for the force and threw to first to complete the play. Cubs 7, Cardinals 1 – Zach McKinstry homers as Cubs beat Cardinals 7-1 Zach McKinstry homered and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1. Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago, and Yan Gomes added two RBIs. Rowan Wick got five outs for the win, leading a solid performance by the Cubs bullpen. Lars Nootbaar homered for NL Central-leading St. Louis, and Corey Dickerson went 4 for 4. The Cardinals dropped to 17-5 in August. Today St. Louis (Hudson 6-6) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 3-5), 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox (Lynn 3-5) at Baltimore (Lyles 9-9), 7:05 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – MLB teams to play all 29 opponents under ’23 balanced sked Every Major League Baseball team will play each other in the same season for the first time next year as the sport switches to its first balanced schedule since 2000. As a result of the format switch agreed to in the March lockout settlement, high-profile games between division rivals such as Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals will be reduced from 19 and intradivision games will drop from 47% to 32%. A team will host all of the other 29 clubs at least once every two seasons. The season opens March 30 with all teams scheduled. NBA – Kobe Bryant widow awarded $16M in trial over crash photos A federal jury has found that Los Angeles County must pay Kobe Bryant’s widow $16 million for emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of the bodies of the NBA star and his daughter taken at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed them. County attorneys argued that the photos were necessary to assess the scene. Hutchins won a national title in 2005 and led the Wolverines to the NCAA championship game in 2015. She won 22 Big Ten regular-season titles, 10 conference tournament championships and never had a losing season. Golf – Woods, McIlroy behind tech-infused golf league in TV venture Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are bringing their own version of team golf to the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy are part of a new media group called TMRW (pronounced “tomorrow”) Sports. Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley is the CEO. The first project is called TGL. It’s a tech-infused golf league that will feature six teams of three players for matches on Monday night. The broadcast partner hasn’t been announced. It will be played in a custom-built arena. The long shots will be using a simulator. The short shots will be live. The 18-hole matches take two hours. Illinois starts at 1:00 Third straight week of a win that points Michigan towards the tournament and a loss that points them back to the bubble. Michigan finally shoots pretty decently against Illinois but the Illini shoot 59% from three. Curbelo doesn't look like a great player coming into this game but shoots 5-for-7 on FGs. The Hunter Dickinson mid-season Renaissance seems to have cooled down - offense and defense both seem to be off. DeVante' Jones is looking like a legit Big Ten point guard. Can Michigan use NIL deals to get everyone back next season? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Rutgers starts at 21:05 Caleb Houston was the Kenpom MVP after going 5-for-9 from three. Rutgers shoots 17% from threes - Michigan gets to win a game because of the other team's poor three point shooting this time! Some contested pull-up jumpers from Rutgers even missed! Michigan needs a defensive wing next year, who's it going to be? At this point, just get into the tournament.  3. Hot Takes and Gimmicky Top Five starts at 34:33 Takes hotter than Illinois shooting a three from the logo. Everyone lost this weekend to keep the spotlight on Carol Hutchins for being the winningest softball coach in NCAA history. Who do you give the ball to on this team to shoot a game-winning three? Return of the Gimmicky Top Five! Top five things Juwan Howard is doing with his spare time. Brian discusses pretzels. Your podcast editor cannot relate to Brian's number one :(  4. Hockey vs Notre Dame starts at 57:44 A very frustrating end to the regular season. Officiating has been inconsistent all season and this weekend was the cherry on top. Michigan is tied with Bowling Green with the most penalty minutes on the season (517 minutes). Michigan does need to be smarter about cross checking opponents from behind, especially with a conference title on the line. Playing Notre Dame is like a microcosm of the NCAA tournament. Michigan has dropped to #2 in Pairwise behind Minnesota State and probably won't fall any further because there's a huge gap between #2 and #3. How Women Win Our Way – with CHAMP10N Guest Carol Hutchins, University of Michigan Head Softball Coach and Winningest Head Softball Coach in NCAA Softball History JOIN US On the Journey to Discover How Women Win Our Way…Check out this week's 10 talks podcast episode to hear HOW WOMEN WIN with our next guest, University of Michigan Head Softball Coach, Carol Hutchins.WINNING STRATEGIES1. How Do You Win Every Year? It is never given or guaranteed that you will have a successful season or be a champion. Do not take a single day for granted. It is important to teach your athletes to be consistent in your own self and your emotions as you go along with wins and losses. Stay in the moment; take what you learn from failure and move on. Ups and downs are a part of the game, and finding something you can take away from the downs and keep focusing on the ups will propel you towards success using things under your control.2. Be your authentic self as a coach. You can only coach so much without integrating your own personality within your philosophy. We may have a role model we look up to and try to mimic our own coaching styles to theirs, but eventually we will mold that into our own unique style that we feel most comfortable and effective with. Hold your athletes to a standard you set within your program along with the ability to be personable; most of these athletes are young people, and especially having female athletes, connection is usually an important component to a coach-athlete relationship. 3. What works for your athletes individually and collectively, and how can you create the best environment for them? Practice should be at a higher level of difficulty than the actual game. Putting players in adverse situations will help prepare them for the highest level of competition that exists. Sometimes this can be challenging for players because it pushes them outside of their comfort zone. With this comes a lot of education and growth, as well as empathy once and if athletes hit their breaking point. At the end of the day, we are all human, and being aware of that as a coaching staff as a whole will help players be healthy both physically and mentally.Stay tuned next week to hear how Kathy and Carlette are Teaming Up to Discover, Design, and Do – "Winning Our Way". Join us on today's episode as Carlette and Kathy discuss How Women Win after hearing from Kirsten Bernthal Booth, Creighton University Head Women's Volleyball Coach.WINNING STRATEGIES1. Sport forces people together as a team with inevitable conflict. How do you get players to buy into your program and its culture and make it all worth it? Coaching is a very difficult task with all of the different components that goes into how to do it successfully. You may not have the best athletes in your gym or the most resources in your department, but cultivating joy into your own attitude and leading by example will remind athletes how much fun it can be to play the sport you teach them. 2. New coaches often copy the people that they have been coached by within their careers as athletes. Though this may work for some, it's important to be aware of how you are feeling when coaching and the interactions that you have with players and staff so you can adapt along the way. Emotional intelligence is critical to develop into an authentic coaching role and find what works for you and the program you want to achieve. Is doing what you are doing getting you the results you want?3. Communicating who you are as a coach and what your program is about is critical when recruiting. If you as an athlete do not truly want to be a part of this program for whatever reason, that is okay – there are plenty to choose from for what you really want. Do not join our team if you do not actually want to be here. Look for players that understand what your program is about and who truly want to be a part of it.Stay tuned THIS FRIDAY to hear Kathy and Carlette Team Up with our next guest on How Women Win Our Way with the University of Michigan Head Softball Coach, Carol Hutchins. Entering her 38th season at the University of Michigan, Carol Hutchins is just six wins away from winning more games than any softball coach at any level, nationwide. Though she couldn't guess it within a hundred, her win total currently stands at 1,631, with 31 Big Ten season and tournament titles, 18 regional NCAA crowns, 12 appearances in the College Softball World Series, and the NCAA title in 2005 – the only Eastern and Northern school to do so, the equivalent of Alabama winning a Division I hockey title. She has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year 17 times, and twice nationally, but what's more impressive is how she's done it: getting young women to take responsibility for themselves, realize they're accountable to each other, not just her, and never forgetting it's an honor, not a privilege, to be a part of the team. As one of her players said, “I came here a girl with potential and left here a woman with no limits." Hutchins is proudest of the fact her players have gone onto do great things far beyond softball.Let Them Lead is a podcast about the risks and rewards of leading today.I'm John Bacon, author of the book, LET THEM LEAD: Unexpected Lessons in Leadership from America's Worst High School Hockey Team, which led to this podcast. On Let Them Lead we talk to remarkable leaders from every field imaginable –automotive, computers, food service, education, and athletics, to name a few – and they share their hard-won wisdom, amazing stories, and a few laughs. Shannon's definition of a charismatic leader is someone who leads with unwavering vision, passion, confidence, energy, belief, commitment, emotion, perseverance and creativity.  "When talking to coaches, I always encourage creativity, thinking outside the box and having the courage to try new things. I want to continue to encourage coaches to try things on for size, like you do with clothes or shoes. Just like clothes or shoes, you can take it off if you don’t like it – put it down – try something else on. Keep what works for you and the team, discard the rest.  Let your leadership skills evolve while you stay true to who you are. You will be tested, criticized and critiqued. Expect it, and navigate successfully through it.  As a leader, the most attractive you can be is authentic. When your authentic, some relationships will end, some will get better, new ones will appear. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
