January 19, 2025Today St. Paul celebrates the confirmation of five adults. (Confirmation is a public affirmation by a teen or adult of their baptism, which typically happened at a younger age). The story of Jesus turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11) provides a framework for thinking through: What then are we confirming? We are confirming that God is a God who turns water into wine.We are confirming that we are not gods who can turn water into wine, but we can fill the cup to the brim, trusting that God in Jesus Christ will make water into wine, for God's glory.

The dynamic guard scored 16 points in the first quarter to give the Trail Blazers a 31-18 lead, and they had little trouble keeping a comfortable margin against a banged-up and slumping team for most of the night. Detroit pulled within six points with 1:39 left to fire up the previously quiet fans, and Jerami Grant quieted them with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Grant finished with 26 points against his former team. Former Kalamazoo Central and University of Michigan player Isaiah Livers matched a career high with 17 points for the Pistons, who have lost a season-high eight straight games. The Pistons were without injured starters Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart and rookie center Jalen Duran, along with key reserve Killian Hayes. Sixers 147, Pacers 143 – Embiid scores 42, Sixers beat Pacers 147-143 without much D Joel Embiid scored 42 points, James Harden added 14 points, 20 assists and nine rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers pulled away late for a 147-143 victory over the Indiana Pacers in a game virtually devoid of defense. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 40 points and 16 assists. Neither team led by more than six points through the first three quarters. The Sixers finally took control with a late 10-0 run. The 38-year-old Turner fell to the ground after getting drilled by right-hander Matt Manning. Turner’s wife, Kourtney, posted to Instagram that the infielder had “16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures & clear scans.” MLB – MLB shift limits raising batter spirits and averages so far Major League Baseball’s new limits on infield shifts are raising batter spirits this spring. They might be bosltering batting averages, too. Batting averages across the league are up slightly from last spring training, from .259 to .263. Left-handed hitters seem to be benefitting most, with their collected average up from .255 to .274. He played nine seasons for the Raiders and holds team records for yards and touchdowns passing. Saints coach Dennis Allen was the Raiders’ coach when the team selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft. Ruggs’ attorneys said they will again take the issue to Clark County District Court. Today St. Paul uses the analogy of a soldier's battlegear to explain what type of spiritual battlegear the Christian needs to withstand the “tactics of the devil.” Listen as Fr. Mattingly keys in on three elements of our spiritual weaponry highlighted by St. Paul in today's 1st reading.
Today St. Paul tells us that his life is poured out like a libation. He has reached the end of his life, and now the race is coming to an end. Another saint whose memorial we celebrated this weekend also ran the race all the way to the end, St. John Paul II. He allowed the world to accompany him as his physical health and appearance declined. May we run the race all the way to the end as these saints have!

St John 8 is our Bible reading for today I will be reading the whole chapter if St John 8. So please get your Bible and let us read together ok I love you all.
Fr Toby looks at the love of St Margaret Clitherow that refused to be crushed.

NBA – Kobe Bryant widow awarded $16M in trial over crash photos A federal jury has found that Los Angeles County must pay Kobe Bryant’s widow $16 million for emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of the bodies of the NBA star and his daughter taken at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed them. The jurors who returned the verdict Wednesday agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that her privacy was invaded when they took and shared photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her grief after losing her husband and daughter. County attorneys argued that the photos were necessary to assess the scene. NCAASB – Michigan’s Hutchins retires as NCAA softball victory leader Carol Hutchins has retired after 38 seasons as Michigan’s softball coach after winning a record number of games. The school made the announcement Wednesday, signaling the end of a career that included 1,707 wins. Bonnie Tholl was promoted to lead the program after she serving as Hutchins’ top assistant for 29 years. Hutchins won a national title in 2005 and led the Wolverines to the NCAA championship game in 2015. She won 22 Big Ten regular-season titles, 10 conference tournament championships and never had a losing season. NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 3 Tonight Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:00 p.m. San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Hall of Fame Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson dies at 87 Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday. The MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the Vikings in January 1970 had been in declining health for years. He entered hospice care on Aug. 12. “Lenny the Cool” went into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He also was inducted as a broadcaster in 2012. Dawson spent several decades working on local TV and radio broadcasts while also doing color analysis for NBC and hosting HBO’s iconic "Inside the NFL.” The Chiefs intend to honor him during their preseason finale against Green Bay on Thursday night. Len Dawson was 87. NFL – Lions Preview – Lions may have double digits in losses for 5th year in a row The Detroit Lions seem destined for another rough season. If the defense struggles, it will likely lead to at least 10 losses for the fifth straight year, and second in a row under coach Dan Campbell. Rookie defensive end Aiden Hutchinson appears to be a player to build around, but there isn’t much help behind him right now. The Lions should be able to move the ball and score behind a strong offensive line in Jared Goff’s second season with the team. The veteran quarterback is surrounded by an improved group of receivers, a solid duo of running backs and standout tight end T.J. Hockenson. NFL – Bears Preview – Bears enter new era, look to make jump under Poles, Eberflus The Chicago Bears are prepared to enter a new era under new general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Chicago comes into the season with few established playmakers on offense and questions to answer on defense, starting with the opener against San Francisco on Sept. 11. The Bears went 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years. They are counting on quarterback Justin Fields to make big strides after a shaky rookie year. On defense, the Bears had an offseason contract standoff with star linebacker Roquan Smith that ended without a new deal. Golf – PGA – Top PGA Tour players to commit to 20-event big money slate The PGA Tour is making its boldest response yet to the rival Saudi-funded league. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced a plan for the best players to commit to a 20-tournament schedule starting next year. That means they will be competing against one another up to 17 times and maybe more. That involves elevating four additional tournaments that will offer $20 million or more to go along with the tournaments already announced. Monahan says top players will be determined by a new Player Impact Program criteria. The PIP will double in money to $100 million. Golf – Woods, McIlroy behind tech-infused golf league in TV venture Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are bringing their own version of team golf to the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy are part of a new media group called TMRW (pronounced “tomorrow”) Sports. Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley is the CEO. The first project is called TGL. It’s a tech-infused golf league that will feature six teams of three players for matches on Monday night. The broadcast partner hasn’t been announced. It will be played in a custom-built arena. The long shots will be using a simulator. The short shots will be live. The 18-hole matches take two hours. As a result of the format switch agreed to in the March lockout settlement, high-profile games between division rivals such as Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals will be reduced from 19 and intradivision games will drop from 47% to 32%. A team will host all of the other 29 clubs at least once every two seasons. The season opens March 30 with all teams scheduled. The Avalanche broke through in the second after a scoreless opening period that featured something rarely seen so far in this series — defense. Artturi Lehkonen and Josh Manson scored 15 seconds apart to get things going in the second, with Mikko Rantanen adding another on Kadri’s third assist. Nathan MacKinnon scored late in the third. Game 3 is Saturday in Edmonton. She’ll either write a response on paper and her lawyers will take a photo of it or she’ll dictate a response. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained in Russia for more than 100 days after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. Tennis – French Open – Gauff to face Swiatek in final It will be top-ranked Iga Swiatek against American Coco Gauff for the French Open women’s singles title on Saturday. An attempt to expand the playoff from the current four-team format to 12 teams before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season fell apart last fall. Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate. Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball. The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001. It would be premature to say the scene at major league ballparks has completely returned to normal, but there's no question this season has been a step in that direction. Delaware North, a concessionaire that operates at 11 big league ballparks, says it has recalled around 8,000 employees and hired around 3,000 new ones since Jan. 1 at those parks. Antetokounmpo finished with 42 points and 12 rebounds in his second game back after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee. Game 3 is Sunday in Milwaukee. 20080803 Today St. Paul is “preaching to the choir”. Have you heard this term? During these Summer months, this term is especially appropriate – so many people are traveling that there have been Sundays when we literally have more folks in the choir loft than down here in the pews. St. Paul knows his audience and their great faith – so he shares a lesson with them that will challenge them where they are; a challenge that is equally appropriate to us here today.
