Having had time to reflect, Humana-Paredes, Bourne and Pod Mama Gabby Bourne chat about: The pursuit of a gold medal at an Olympic Games, and the ever-existential question: Was it all worth it? "I realized I was starting to open up a little bit of a gap and I'm like, ‘Oh my gosh, am I going to win?' I probably was looking around way too much. But in my mind I was like, ‘Is this really happening right now? That's what was going through my head. It was just adrenaline and just taking in the moment of, ‘Wow, this is incredible. Is this really happening?' Then just trying to dig deep to finish the race." Kenneth Rooks just brought home a silver medal in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at the Paris Olympics. How'd he do it? Well, if you haven't watched the race yet. Go on NBC Sports' YouTube channel, watch it and then pick this podcast back up because he comes from the back of the pack to nearly pull off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history. His final time of 8:06.41 shattered his personal best by an astounding nine seconds and makes him the second-fastest American ever in this event. Kenneth's past 14 months have been amazing. Just a year ago, he was relatively unknown on the international stage, but after winning the NCAA title, the U.S. Championships in dramatic fashion by falling and getting back up and now an Olympic silver, he's shown the world what he's capable of. We have at least two past episodes with Kenneth that you can go back and listen to. In a race dominated by the likes of world record holder Lamecha Girma and defending Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, Kenneth's surge in the final lap put everyone on notice. He boldly took the lead with 400 meters to go, and although El Bakkali eventually reclaimed the top spot, Kenneth's audacious run secured him a place in history. It was one of the biggest surprises of the Games but Kenneth takes us through why he believes it was possible, the training it took to get there and why he believes he can go a little faster. He's just 24 years old and just getting started. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Olympic Silver Medalist Laurent Dupreuil. We talked about Laurent's athletics environment growing up, his training and recovery practices, and his nutrition strategy for optimizing performance. Laurent also talked about how he has fine-tuned and improved his training practices over the years to become one of the top skating athletes in the world. Laurent Dubreuil, the current world champion in the 500m, continues to dominate on the international stage and has become Canada's most successful sprinter in the last decade. He was named the Speed Skating Canada's long track Rising Star in 2011 and received the Jeremy Wotherspoon Award for Male Long Track Athlete of the Year in 2015 and 2021. The son of Canadian long track Olympians Robert Dubreuil and Ariane Loignon, Laurent had early success, running in three World Junior Championships from 2010 to 2012 and winning four medals, including 500m gold in 2012. He finished on the podium five times for Team Quebec in the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax. The Lévis native made his World Cup debut during the 2011-2012 season and has since won a remarkable 29 medals. Despite only skating a few times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubreuil finished his 2020-2021 season with four World Cup medals and two podium positions at the World Championships, including gold in the 500m. He became only the second Canadian male to win the 500m world title, following three-time winner Jeremy Wotherspoon. In addition, he made history by winning silver at the 2020 World Sprint Championships, becoming one of only four Canadians to reach the men's podium in the event's 50-year history. In this episode I speak to Cath Bishop. A speaker, consultant, executive coach and author on developing success in leadership. Cath is also a former diplomat and former elite rower for Great Britain, representing at 3 Olympic games, achieving World Champion status twice as well as an Olympic Silver Medal in partnership with Dame Katherine Grainger in the coxless pair in Athens.A cursory glance at Cath's Wikipedia or LinkedIn might give you the impression of one word… SUCCESS. Yet it's the notion of what is defined as success which sits at the heart of her new book The Long Win. Is success the outcome or the journey towards it? Is it the medals and quarterly targets or the skills and growth you gain along the way? And why is our culture obsessed with winning?I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Cath and getting deeper into some of the topics within the book. If you are interested I've left a link to the book in the description below, along with a host of other books I've read and have been recommended in the world of psychology, organisation culture, wellbeing and performance. In our conversation we jump straight into the themes from the book and the implications for building psychologically informed environments. We only lightly touch upon Cath's own Olympic and athletic journey, but if you'd like to find out more I'd invite you to listen to Cath's interviews with Simon Mundie on Don't Tell Me the Score and Steve Ingham on The Supporting Champions podcast to learn more. My guest on this episode is former two-time Heavyweight Champion of the World - Chris Byrd. We talk about Chris’s miraculous recovery from years of debilitating pain from nerve damage in his foot, hip replacement surgery, and numerous shoulder problems. We discussed Chris's new diet and alternative therapies that aided his recovery. We also spoke about Chris’s great career from his days in the amateurs and sparring in an 8 by 10 ring in his parents' basement; his trip to the Olympic trials in 1988; his Olympic Silver Medal in 1992; not getting signed by a major promoter coming off of that medal and his roundabout journey as an avoided fighter to a shot at the Heavyweight title and eventually becoming a two-time champ. We also go into his battles in the ring with Ike Ibeabuchi, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, Maurice Harris, David Tua, Evander Holyfield, Jameel McCline and many more and how he found out that many of his contemporaries were using PEDs.

Gail Emms played brilliantly, the outstanding player on the court by a mile. As she smashed her Athens 2004 semi-final, with partner Nathan Robertson, she guaranteed either Silver or Gold for Team GB. What an achievement. Except this story's not like that. To the outside, it's a strange thing to consider yourself a "failure" for winning an Olympic Silver Medal (they lost the final). But that's how Gail feels. When you're conditioned into 'winning at all costs', the knock on effect can be scary. Consolation prizes mean nothing. How does she feels when she looks at her medal now? The answer will shock you. Taken in isolation, her story of depression, rejection, isolation may sound surprising. How can an athlete who's won a great prize feel that way? But that's the point. The Mask rises; disguises. With this week's guest, we shift from a legend in the hurdles to a legend in the mile as Shanna and Chris interview Jim Ryun. In 1964, Jim Ryun burst on the track scene at the age of 17 by running the first sub-4-minute mile by a high school boy. He did it after only 2 years as a runner, and then just a month later, he would earn a spot on the US Olympic team for the 1964 Tokyo Games. Of course, that was just the beginning of a storied career that included 3 Olympic Games, an Olympic Silver Medal, and 6 world records. In this conversation, Jim talks about what led him to try cross country in the first place, a hard first practice that almost made him quit, the teammates that kept him going, and of course the turning point where he realized he might be pretty good thanks to the wisdom and foresight of his coach. He shares the stories of his first Olympic experience in Tokyo as a 17-year-old and then the come-from-behind silver medal in the 1968 Games in Mexico City, including an apology that would come later from a Kenyan competitor in the same race. He discusses his attitude toward doping including when he first became aware of others using performance enhancing drugs including rumors of blood doping involving Lasse Viren from the 1972 Games. Beyond the accolades and the talent, Jim gives us a window into what made him the athlete he was on the track through his faith, his incredible support system, and a work ethic that was fostered by a coach that really cared. Jim was a fierce competitor on the track, but you will hear a humble and gentle spirit in this interview that will bring a smile to your face.

Introduction: James O Callaghan is the Performance Director for the Irish Sailing Association a role he has held for over 14 years. In that time ,he has seen Irish sailing secure World Champion Medals, European Titles and of course an Olympic Silver Medal. Podcast episode summary: This episode reveals the indomitable spirit, resilience and mental toughness required by Irish Sailors to perform at World Class Sailing regattas and to qualify to participate at the Olympics. James O Callaghan shares his experience of being the performance director for the Irish Sailing Association, the role he has played in building the structure for ISA and in facilitating a performance environment in which the athletes can thrive. Lessons on learning, teaming, managing the mind, energy management, perspective making, priorities, decision making and the importance of self- awareness litter this very engaging conversation. Points made through the episode: James' project at Trinity College Dublin –“how to manage peoples Olympic campaigns was instrumental in positioning him as a burgeoning entrepreneur. He set up Sail Coach straight out of college-where he coached two Olympic sailors from South Africa and the Seychelles -this project was hugely successful from a performance point of view and enabled James to learn loads-Joined ISA (Irish Sailing Association) as their Head Coach and quickly assumed role of full time Performance Director. Tokyo 2020 will be James's sixth Olympics At the start Role was about defining Vision for ISA and building the structure to support the development of World Class Athletes. His role now is about guiding their strategy and challenging assumptions made in the past. James also instrumental in guiding the associations foundation to raise ongoing funds for the sport. Team has won 27 international medals, two of which comprise Olympic medals for Annalise Murphy, 4th at 2012 Olympics and 2nd at Rio in 2016 In sport you cannot look back or rest on your laurels “you are only as good as your last race” Metrics vital to objectively assess how athletes are doing against the benchmarks generated The dream goal is a medal, but Athletes do not go to work every day talking about medal making instead they follow a precise pathway to build performance Sailing cycle is relentless Organisation comprises ever increasing circles, the core team an athlete and coach, surrounded by head coach, the performance director and then the many stakeholders like Sport Ireland and the Olympic Federation James is buffer between the sport and the agencies; he has to strike a keen balance between allowing athletes train and helping them promote their own disciplines on a PR train. James described the Performance Pathways the athletes enter at a very young age, helping talented sailors understand what it means to be a performance athlete Talent is of course a key requirement but not a distinguisher -attitude is essential The Performance Pathway teaches resilience, responsibility and self -responsibility Important for James and his colleagues who are supporting the athletes to be match fit. Olympics and the preparation required is an intense experience Energy management is vital. You can do a good job but don't leave all of your energy at work The inner voice & self-awareness is that 5% that has to be trained. Olympics for sure is a pressure cooker environment but important to remember it is not predictable, that is not reality. Those who respond best to variability are the ones who will end up being an Olympian Champion An athletes success will depend on their level of self -awareness, self -regulation, how they decide to react to situations and control the controllable. James described the big decision Annalise made recently to quit the 49erFX category , a new campaign for ISA and to attempt to return to the discipline for which she won a medal. His message; if you have to make a decision make it and don't expend energy pondering. Some significant life lessons shaped & continue to influence James O Callaghan. The death of his father, a drowning accident while he was sailing, has helped James deal with adversity and has shifted his perspective on setback and failures The courage shown by his Mum has inspired James and has shaped a lot of his views on life-family is extraordinarily important to James -talking about the “real” stuff With Tokyo looming James is busy working with athletes but also with the Foundation and the Olympic Steering Group. James described the auspices of the OSG and the setting up of the Foundation. Earlier this year with funding ISA was able to build its first ever Performance HQ in Dunlaoighre and that has been a game changer for the Association. Athletes are now housed together and not flung across the globe, Coaches live close to the HQ, Coaches can now share ideas across the teams and a performance culture is now evident The 3 containers that comprise the HQ are a very efficient use of money and the time. They are of course mobile and will be shipped to Tokyo for that “Home from Home” purpose important to the team. Dotsie Bauch’s journey to the Olympics has been extraordinary: after recovering from anorexia she found cycling and became a Silver Medalist at the age of 39 years of age. She shares how movement was an important part of her recovery and how decisions she made for herself along the way helped with performance. Dotsie’s journey to the Olympic has been extraordinary; after recovering from anorexia, where she almost lost her life, Dotsie found cycling at the age of 26 that helped in her recovery. Twelve years later she competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London at the age of 39 years of age won an Olympic Silver Medal. Dotsie shares her journey of compulsive exercise, disordered eating, and recovery where movement was a part of her recovery. For Dotsie, going dairy-free was important to her because of the ethical stand on situations of what goes on behind closed doors in our food system. She did not want to pay into that system anymore and changed her diet to more of a plant-based diet. She noticed that it made an impact on the way her body felt during training. She shares her tips and tools to make sure you get the amount of fuel you need! You Know She’s Legit: After concluding a prolific professional cycling career that produced a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, eight US national championships, two Pan American gold medals and a world record, Dotsie Bausch has become a powerful influencer for plant-based eating for athletes and non-athletes alike. Named by VegNews in 2019 as one of the top 20 most influential vegans in the world, she utilizes her degree in plant-based nutrition to inform her impassioned messages as an advocate on behalf of humans, planet earth and animals. Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the Olympics while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her latest initiative is founding the non-profit Switch4Good. Switch4Good launched in early 2018 with a television commercial featuring six Olympians from four different countries and proves that cow’s milk is not part of a high-performance diet. The ground-breaking commercial aired on NBC during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games closing ceremonies and on ABC during the Academy Awards broadcast. View the commercial at https://Switch4Good.org. Bausch is also one of the stars of the film The Game Changers (http://gamechangersmovie.com), which chronicles the story of the world’s most dangerous myth. Directed by Academy Award-winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar-winner James Cameron, The Game Changers released to worldwide audiences in October of 2019 and in just one week, became the #1 downloaded film of all time on iTunes. Long before embodying radiant health and becoming an influential game-changer, Bausch struggled for years with severe eating disorders and a recreational drug habit, that combined, led to a suicide attempt. It was during her recovery that she discovered her gift and love for the bike. Bausch speaks passionately around the world, spreading her message about the numerous benefits – humane, nutritional and environmental – of plant-based eating. Her popular TEDx Talk, “Olympic Level Compassion,” has garnered over 275,000 views and has been a catalyst of change for thousands of people. Have you ever come in second in a contest or received an A- instead of an A? Find out why winning the silver is...a bummer.
