How To Live Your Dream With Jim Peterik

Grammy® Award Winning songwriter Jim Peterik is excited to create more music at 71. Donning his fabulous purple hair, the iconic musician graces the show and gives us a wealth of wise words, laughs and inspiration on why we should trust our instinct and pursue what we love. For Jim, his passion for words and music continues to touch many lives.    Tune in to Someone Gets Me — How To Live Your Dream With Jim Peterik.  ▶️   Key points covered in this episode:    ✔️So many incredible musicians as guests on the show have long careers and experienced the magic of living that dream. Jim Peterik is one of those people who has found that magic in a career that started back in the 60s, and he's still going strong with amazing, great music, a living legend. He has written a book, still plays the guitar and keyboards, composes music and does lots of things in the creative space.      ✔️Jim recalls nearly dismissing what he thought was a prank call on the answering machine in 1981. A guy sounding like Sylvester Stallone left him a message. Jim's wife prodded him to return the call and found out it was certainly not a joke. To this day, "Eye of the Tiger", the theme from the film Rocky III remains an unforgettable song that inspires people of all ages.   ✔️ Collaboration is the secret to making wonderful music, according to Jim. The beauty of going into the heart and creating with fellow talented artists has made his life's work fun and rewarding.    ✔️To succeed in life, don't be afraid to suck. This is excellent advice from Jim as the musical great. His journey as the founder of rock band Survivor and creating his list of hit songs resulted from a series of trying and failing in his craft and passion. "Don't think every bit of lyrics and melody is going to be good. Sometimes you can suck for the long term before suddenly something rises from the ashes, and you don't suck anymore. It's like trying to find the diamonds, yet people stop themselves because they're not brilliant right away. Brilliant comes to you gradually."    ✔️ Legacy and inspiration. Jim continues to receive stacks of fan mail and elaborate packages of Rocky albums to sign. They all have a note of how much his music meant to them, even some from 12 to 14 year-olds. "It's a great experience to hear the effect you can have through music and your lyrics. And I always try to put a little bit of meaning and give a little wisdom with the fun."   Jim Peterik is an American musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the founder of the band Survivor, as vocalist and songwriter of "Vehicle" by the Ides of March, and as co-writer of the anthem "Eye of the Tiger", the theme from the 1982 film Rocky III.   Peterik has co-written songs for 38 Special ("Rockin' into the Night", "Hold On Loosely"), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackhawk, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar ("Heavy Metal"), Cathy Richardson, Dennis DeYoung, Van Zant, Brian Wilson, REO Speedwagon, and The Beach Boys.  He is currently fronting the melodic rock band Pride of Lions, an entire album of women of Rock and Roll called Tigress and smooth-jazz project Jim Peterik's Lifeforce, and has a regular series of yearly concert performances with an all-star cast as World Stage. He is also active as a producer and mentor to young, developing talent. Jefferson Starship has gone through a lot of changes over the years. Over the years, and numerous lineup changes, the band scored many hits, like “Miracles,” “Count on Me,” “Find Your Way Back,” and “Jane,” which was co-written by Freiberg. The band is currently out on the road in support of their brand new album called Mother of the Sun, and from the band, we welcome David Freiberg and vocalist Cathy Richardson. We talk the new album, which features several nods to the past, including a brand new song, "It's About Time," co-written with Slick, and another song written by former vocalist Marty Balin. This week we track the new live album from The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Layla Revisited. TTB plays Derek & the Dominoes album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in its entirety. This release features Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. We also take a look at, 'The 27 Club.' "The 27 Club includes popular musicians who have died at age 27,often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse or violent means such as homicide, suicide, or transportation-related accidents. The deaths of several 27-year-old popular musicians between 1969 and 1971 (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison) led to the belief that deaths are more common at this age. Statistical studies have failed to find any unusual pattern of musician deaths at this age, comparing it to equally small increases at ages 25 and 32, with a 2011 BMJ study noting instead that young adult musicians have a higher death rate than the rest of the young adult population, concluding: "Fame may increase the risk of death among musicians, but this risk is not limited to age 27".The "club" has been repeatedly cited in music magazines, journals and the daily press. Several exhibitions have been devoted to the idea, as well as novels, films and stage plays. There have been many theories and speculations about the causes of such early deaths and their possible connections. Four years before the BMJ study was published, Cobain and Hendrix biographer Charles R. Cross wrote: "The number of musicians who died at 27 is truly remarkable by any standard. [Although] humans die regularly at all ages, there is a statistical spike for musicians who die at 27."Pacific Street BluesPlaylist: July 25, 2021 1. Rev. Celeste's guest is Maureen Muldoon, spiritual leader, author, actress, teacher, speaker, life coach and master storyteller. She works out the "thorns in her paw" through art and vulnerability. She noticed how helping other people tell their stories is healing for her. She learned from hearing other people's stories and through the 12-step program - sharing experience, strength and hope.Frustrated by the idea that she had the wrong body parts to be a minister, after practicing the Prayer of Jabez, she got signs to move into ministry. While community building and leading a Youth and Family ministry, she learned how to build a church. She used A Course in Miracles (ACIM) to move into speaking in a pulpit. Before then, her resistance, based on old stereotypes kept her from ministry.Maureen created Miracles Live 365 with two lessons 6:45 am and 8:20 am CT seven days a week with eight other teachers. In order to build content, she offered an ACIM sampler. She was asked to go the distance. She said yes, and has been doing it for several years. If someone comes to her with a problem, it's her problem. She sees a way to work on the issue and be loving instead of shutting down. While giving advice, she often thinks that she needs to follow her own advice. Maureen is the Spiritual Leader of the Speakeasy Spiritual Community, where the Sunday service includes a dialogue around the message delivered. She was sick of the triangle where one guy on top gets to say something and others have to accept it. She is one of six children who didn't always get a word in, so at Speakeasy, she gives people an opportunity to talk. While sobriety is no longer an issue, Maureen uses the principles and techniques of the 12-step program in almost everything she does. Practicing the lessons and applying the theory makes all the difference.Speakeasy has a Culture Club where racism, White fragility and solutions for eliminating racial discord are explored and discussed. She listens to the story and is willing to be wrong. From there, she gets an opportunity to heal. She sees herself on the spectrum of racism. She's not afraid to look at her biases. She recounts her first husband leaving her for Miss Universe, an Asian woman. She began to notice her hatred toward Asian people as a result of her journey toward forgiveness.Maureen also acknowledged her reaction to a Black woman. After reading "White Fragility", she realized that she was harming the person by not allowing the woman her anger. Maureen mentioned how White women's tears have been destructive over the years. She acknowledges White privilege includes not allowing other people to have their emotions while willing to have all of hers.Maureen founded Miracles Live 365, the study and application of A Course in Miracles lessons. She would love to have the legacy of seeing people continuing it for years to come. The class meets at 6:45 am CT seven days a week. There is also another class at 8:20 am CT. There are also noon and evening sessions on Wednesdays. Register and listen to as many lessons and participate. Go to miracleslive365.com to subscribe.Maureen invites people to tell their stories and listen to the stories you haven't been listening to before now. She feels every story needs to be heard. She invites people to Voice Box Stories (https://wgnradio.com/after-hours-with-rick-kogan/maureen-muldoon-cathy-richardsons-voicebox-where-a-song-becomes-a-story-and-a-story-becomes-a-song/), a monthly event where real people's stories are told and great music is played by Jefferson Starship's Cathy Richardson. We had the honor of interviewing Jefferson Starship as part of our Hard Rock Hotel San Diego interview series and collaboration! Shout out to my Dad for co-hosting! Jefferson Starship rose from the ashes of another legendary San Francisco band, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Jefferson Airplane. Founder Paul Kantner (who died in January 2016 at age 74) knew that combining powerful creative forces, personalities and talents could create something far greater than the sum of its parts. Between 1974 and 1984, Jefferson Starship released eight gold and platinum albums, twenty hit singles, sold out concerts worldwide and lived out legendary rock and roll escapades. "Jefferson Starship was my creation...and it has this nice fluidity about it that allows any number of people to come in and do things with whatever Jefferson Starship is." - Paul Kantner Today's Jefferson Starship remains dedicated to breathing new life into the living catalog of the Jeffersonian legacy, going to the edge, pushing the sonic boundaries and staying true to the original spirit of the music. Featuring original and historic members David Freiberg (also a founder of San Francisco luminaries Quicksilver Messenger Service) and drummer Donny Baldwin, along with longtime members Chris Smith on keyboards and synth bass, Jude Gold on lead guitar and GRAMMY Nominee Cathy Richardson anchoring the female lead vocal spot made famous by the inimitable Grace Slick (who invited her to sing in her place as Jefferson Airplane accepts their Lifetime Achievement Award at the GRAMMY Merit Awards Concert.) The band keeps a hectic touring schedule bolstered by several television recent appearances including My Music: 60s Pop, Rock and Soul on PBS and live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra on AXS Network. The Freiberg-penned 1979 hit Jane is the theme song for the Netflix Original Series Wet, Hot American Summer. In 2014-15, the band played a series of free concerts for America's Veterans and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the US Department of Defense. Jefferson Starship has traveled the world playing in 20 countries across the globe in the last 3 years alone. The music that defined a generation and spanned decades is alive and well and more relevant than ever in pop culture- songs such as Volunteers, White Rabbit, Wooden Ships, Somebody to Love, Today, Miracles, Count on Me, Fast Buck Freddie, Jane and Find Your Way Back continue to reverberate throughout the collective consciousness today. “If you’re not having fun, it won’t work.” — David Freiberg of Jefferson Starship
