Chalino Sanchez had left behind a dangerous life in Sinaloa and by the early 1990s had become a narcocorrido singing star in the U.S. He had killed, had been shot, and sang of the exploits of the cartels. In May 1992 he returned to Sinaloa for a tour. Halfway thru his performance at a sold out club in the state capital he received a note from a fan. Chalino's face went white...

Today's case is about the unsolved murder of Mexican Musician Chalino Sanchez who was handed his own death note, live on stage. Later that night, Chalino was kidnapped by alleged Police and by the morning, he'd be found dead. Chalino Sanchez was crowned the King of Corridos and is the idol of many musicians today, including Peso Pluma, who in 2023 went viral after receiving his own death note.  The message warned Peso Pluma that if he performed his upcoming concert in Tijuana, it would be his last. It had been sent by a Cartel over his song ‘El Gavilán', that he'd made with Luis R Conriquez and Tony Aguirre. The lyrics complimented El Chapo, which enraged the cartel. But after Peso Pluma received a death note over a bad lyric, theories behind Chalino's unsolved murder were re-ignited across the internet.  Corrido music is about love, hardship and crime. Narcocorrido is specifically about the life of narcos. Chalino Sanchez lived a crazy life full of revenge, drug trafficking, coyotes, and music. Chalino Sanchez was a Mexican singer-songwriter known for his narcocorridos, or drug ballads. His songs told true stories of gang rivalries, cartel activity, famous outlaws, etc. In 1992, he received a note in the middle of a concert that is believed to have included a death threat. Chalino crumpled up the note and went on with the show. The Least of Us follows his landmark Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic (Bloomsbury, 2015), which ignited awareness of the epidemic that has cost the United States hundreds of thousands of lives, and become deadliest drug scourge in the nation's history. Dreamland won a National Book Critics Circle award for the Best Nonfiction Book of 2015.
