Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 23rd July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. MICROLINO EV LOOKS POISED TO HIT EUROPEAN ROADS SOON "You may soon see these little electric runabouts flitting around European cities. The flat-out-adorable Microlino is a modern riff on BMW's Isetta, the three-wheeled, front-door bubble car from the 1950s" writes Chris Paukert at cnet.com: "Micro Mobility Systems AG, the Swiss electric scooter company behind the project, has announced that the under-8-foot-long Microlino has just passed the final tests for EU homologation. That's right, it's now road-legal in Europe. The version powered by the 8kWh battery achieved 78 miles in testing, while the 14.4kWh version managed over 125 miles. Those may not seem like particularly impressive range figures, but they should be plenty for this strictly city-minded vehicle." RENAULT ZOE CLIMBS TO #1 IN GERMANY "The German plug-in electric car (PEV) market grew 23% in June, to 5,709 registrations, with plug-in hybrids (+25%) and fully electric cars (+21%) growing at a similar pace. In 2018, all-electrics are reaching 1% share, while plug-in hybrids have also grown their share to 1%, resulting in a total PEV share of 2%." reported Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: "But the most interesting story on the fuels mix is the Titanic-like drop of diesel vehicles sales. In June, their sales sank 16%. The most popular EV this year so far is the Renault Zoe" IN JUNE, OVER 78,000 PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS WERE SOLD IN CHINA But from Germany, to China, let's supercharge those numbers. "In total, some 78,260 New Energy Cars were sold at 3.1% market share. It’s the world’s largest plug-in car market with nearly 373,000 cars sold during the first six months." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs TESLA POLICE CARS START TO PATROL IN LUXEMBOURG com has news of yet another police force going electric: "Police in Luxembourg have added two Tesla electric cars to their fleet, hoping that their speedy acceleration will help them nab more criminals while also trimming the tiny country's carbon emissions" TESLA MIGHT SOON HAVE A 'NEAR-MONOPOLISTIC' HOLD ON THE EV MARKET Raul Hernandez notes that: "According to a team of Berenberg analysts led by Alexander Haissl, Tesla's competitors have opted for a "low-risk, low-investment" strategy when it comes to electric vehicle manufacturing. That will leave Tesla in the driver's seat with its all-in approach." The analysts write: "With no clear pathway to high-volume EV [electric vehicle] production for these OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] before the mid-2020s Tesla will be given a near-monopolistic opportunity to gain market share and outcompete the incumbent automotive industry." They continue to say: "Tesla/Panasonic continue to exhibit a clear advantage on cell and pack technology compared to all peers, on chemistry, cooling and cost," write Berenberg analysts. "Tesla's small and actively tube-cooled cells, which are not currently replicated and are unlikely to be so by competitors, drives significantly better residual values and cost-of-ownership advantages." "Tesla will invest roughly $32.7 billion into electric vehicle projects over the next five years, which is 40% more than Daimler and Volkswagen combined, according to Berenberg estimates. MODEL 3 ARRRIVES AT CLEAN TECHNICA Kyle Field at Clean Technica has a Model 3!: "One of our early reservations turned into a car this week as we took delivery of the CleanTechnica Tesla Model 3 at the Tesla Santa Barbara showroom. It’s a Long Range Black Model 3 with the Premium Upgrade Package!" He says: "Let’s talk looks. Yes, I know not everyone likes the looks of the car – especially the dash – but I absolutely love it. It feels so high end and sleek on the inside that it just makes me smile every time I get in. It’s simple enough to not feel cluttered but still manages to do everything I need it to do." MODEL 3 TRACK MODE "YouTuber Marques Brownlee recently had an opportunity to drive the Model 3 Performance on a track, and he pointed out an experimental "Track Mode" that takes the gloves off" spotted Jon Fingas at Engadget: "The in-testing feature switches on "stability control and powertrain settings configured for track driving," and it's no secret what that means: you can drift, understeer and otherwise push the electric car past its usual limits. It's not certain when this will reach customers, or even what the final name will be. And as enthusiasts will tell you, it's not a novel concept -- many sports cars have the option to turn off handholding features. It's still relatively rare among street-going electric vehicles, though, and serves as another signal that Tesla is interested in EV performance beyond straight-line acceleration." The kids haven’t even stepped out on the sidewalk draped in their ghoulish finery, and Aunt Mildred has yet to buy a fat turkey for the family feast. Nevertheless, here in the auto world, the time has come to start deliberating on the best cars and trucks of the year. Among the accolades in the automotive community, one of the most prestigious honors is the North American Car and Truck of the Year award. On this week’s special edition of Autoline After Hours, John McElroy welcomes three fellow jurors to join him in reviewing the nominees on the “short lists.” See which cars, trucks and utility vehicles have risen above the rest as John is joined by Michelle Krebs from Edmunds.com, Chris Paukert of Autoblog.com and freelance auto journalist Jim McCraw.
It’s time once again to prove that no one can run a car company like an auto journalist… or so we think. Our contenders are here and ready to go head-to-head as they assemble their automotive dream teams. In addition to stalwart John McElroy of Dymaxion Motors, three newcomers have joined the fray: Csaba Csere of Cheetah Motors, Chris Paukert of Mitty Motors, and Joe White of Rat Rod Global Motors. Charlie Vogelheim MCs the evening’s event, and we’re joined once again by those quick-witted color commentators: Scott Burgess and Mark Phelan. This year’s draft is one of the most challenging yet! Each team owner has to pick, among other requirements, a company HQ, the perfect brand spokesperson and a talented corporate leader. Which company will draft the best picks? Click “play” to find out!
Try you might, the internal combustion engine just won't die. And, that's partly thanks to innovative designs that keep cropping up like the opoc (opposed piston opposed cylinder) engine from EcoMotors. For several years now, we've been following the progress of this startup on AAH. This week CEO Don Runkle joins us and we'll be asking him about the deal to fund a $200 million opoc engine factory. We'll also be getting into the big news stories of the week: Chrysler caves to NHTSA's recall demands after previously refusing, but why? EVs and plug-ins are depreciating much faster than other cars. And with Bosch's new eClutch anyone can drive a stick! Joining John McElroy to discuss all this and more is Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist, and Chris Paukert from Autoblog.
Back in 5th grade science class we all learned what happens when a snake molts -- it loses its skin, becoming in-essence an all-new serpent. That’s kind of what’s been going on over at Chrysler the last few years with Viper. Once Dodge’s proud ruler of the performance road -- nearly lost amid the financial turmoil -- has been reborn under the Street and Racing Technology brand, is now ready to take on the competition with the new 2012 model. Our special guest on Autoline This Week to discuss Viper, the SRT brand as well as Dodge Design itself is the man in charge of all three, Ralph Gilles. Joining John McElroy on his panel are Scott Burgess of AOL Autos and Chris Paukert of Autoblog.com.

There's no doubt that one of the most hotly anticipated cars to rise from the ashes of the Detroit auto implosion is the 2013 SRT Viper. On this week's show, we get down to brass tacks and talk to the man behind the two-seat beast. And, that man is none other than the President and CEO of the SRT Brand, Ralph Gilles. We'll be getting all of the details about the fierce new snake, where the SRT brand is going, and we'll ask what we can expect next from Chrysler's rising star. To discuss this and more, John McElroy is joined in studio by co-host Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist, and Chris Paukert from Autoblog.
King of the HillThanks to producer/animator Mike Judge, most people connect "King of the Hill" with the former Fox TV series. And though there's a lot to be said for a 12-year old cartoon series that centered on one character and his life with propane, here at Autoline any "King of the Hill" reference points to one word and one word only, and of course that word is TRUCK! And this time of year when you talk truck, you're talking about three specific trucks or SUVs -- as the case may be -- who end up as our own "Kings of the Hill," better known as the finalists for the North American Truck of the Year. That's right, twelve months have flown by and left us with the latest top three trucks voted on by the jurors of NACTOY -- the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards. These finalists -- Ford's Explorer, Jeep's Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango -- have been narrowed down from a long list of top-notch candidates with the winner to be revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit January 10th.Joining Autoline host and original juror John McElroy to talk about these finalists and who may be crowned this year's "King of the Hill" are fellow NACTOY jurors Larry Webster from Popular Mechanics and Chris Paukert of Autoblog.com.

Don't Look Back The longtime Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Satchel Paige once said "Don't look back -- something might be gaining on you." In the case with today's luxury car leaders BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus that "something" is Audi. The great luxury car maker that, in the past, could never quite get over the top has been gaining momentum with awards, marketing and, most importantly, sales. Halo vehicles like the R8 have grabbed the headlines but the real gains are coming across the entire lineup putting pressure on the traditional leaders of the segment. Just what are Audi's sales goals and how does the company plan to keep the momentum rolling? This week on Autoline Detroit to answer those and other questions on this blazing hot German luxury car maker is Johan de Nysschen, President of Audi of America. John McElroy is joined on his Autoline Detroit panel by David Welch of Bloomberg/Businessweek and Chris Paukert from Autoblog.com.

Point and Click Just a few years ago if you wanted to know anything about the latest cars or trucks you essentially had two choices, magazines or newspapers. Then came the Internet and everything changed. Today you may find that hot product on the web in some cases before it's even left the design studio. Things happen fast and the competition can be fierce. In some respects it's this century's version of the Wild West! The manufacturers still try to control the process but there are eyes everywhere. Often the scoop comes from a bevy of blogs and websites that cover the auto industry -- some independent, others corporate -- but all pretty darn fast! Joining John to discuss this new automotive media are members of that very fraternity. John Neff is at Autoblog.com while Mike Dushane is from CarandDriver.com and Chris Paukert formerly of Windingroad.com is now at Autoblog.com as well.
