This episode is one that you do NOT want to miss. Merl Code is in the House! The basketball world is not always a fair place for everybody and this episode is a perfect example of why. Merl Code was one of those players that saw the play happen before it happened. He played with love, passion, joy and made those around him better. He played his college hoops at Clemson and went on to play professionally overseas, including a stint with the Denver Nuggets. He later worked as a sneaker rep for both Nike and Adidas where he would eventually find the game he loved betraying him. Merl dives deep into his basketball journey from start to finish. He shares stories about his recruiting process, Clemson, playing professionally, his time at Nike and Adidas, and his book titled Black Market. Merl also speaks his truth of how the justice system failed, how he ended up spending 5 and a half months in Federal Prison, and what's next for him and his journey. We can't thank Merl Code enough for taking the time to share his story. The basketball world can be a dark place at times and we are beyond thankful to have Merl speak his truth. We know that Merl is going to have a positive impact on whatever he does moving forward. Back in 2018, it looked like the sport of college basketball was about to be turned upside down thanks to an FBI investigation centered around Christian Dawkins. The press conference shocked the sports world and identified a lot of powerful schools and coaches. Two years later and very little has happened outside of Dawkins being convicted on a number of charges. So what happened? The Scheme, a documentary on HBO Max, is the story of how this investigation unfolded as told primarily by Christian Dawkins. It's an intriguing tale of five wild months in 2017 and how the FBI attempted a take down of college basketball. On this episode, we recap the documentary and give our thoughts on how everything went down. If you're a fan of CBB, this is a story you want to hear. Read more about the episode on our website: https://distantreplaypodcast.com/ep-42-the-scheme-documentary-recap/ Until next week, check us out on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

We talked about the Scheme documentary on HBO about Christian Dawkins and the FBI case that brought down Rick Pitino, a few assistant coaches, and a few Adidas representatives but did not change the landscape of college athletics as was feared. Here's our conversation. We recommend you watch it, and if you want to continue the conversation, let us know.

Christian Dawkins acknowledged paying college basketball recruits during his trial in Brooklyn. HBO told his story from his point of view and he let it rip . my take on the documentary . Plus why it put Jalen Green's jump to the G league program a slap in the face of the NCAA!

This episode of The Locker Room we talk/ HBO’s NCAA basketball scandal documentary The Scheme that prompts many questions. EJ & Myles (MH) shares some of our questions as we debate some of the issues in this amazing show. Christian Dawkins is a kid from Saginaw, Michigan whose life was all about basketball, the family business as we like to say. His father was a locally famous high school coach who led his team to two state championships; his brother was a young superstar-in-the-making when he tragically passed away from a heart condition. Dawkins who wasn’t that great on the court, so he applied his preternatural intelligence toward being a scout/recruiter/agent who bridged the gaps between talented hoopsters and the college coaches and big-name shoe companies who wanted them. Noticing the value of the Black Athlete at an early age, learned to play the game. On his way to being the next great thing in sport business, his drive and ambition was used against him.Dawkins had started his own agency and, in a quest for financing, ended up getting used dealing with a couple of shady dudes, and a couple of other shady characters who were shady because they were actually, well, you know, undercover FBI agents. Eventually, Dawkins found himself in a hotel room with a bunch of FBI machine guns pointed at him, had him feeling like an R&B singer. Further complicating the story, Dawkins’ phone was wiretapped, and we all grew up on The Wire so we know that's not good. The wires, they’re an important part of this film, which presents them to the public for the first time and something that probably won’t make big-name university head coaches like Arizona’s Sean Miller and LSU’s Will Wade very happy.Christian Dawkins is a man of significant moral complexity. Christian’s point of view, and he’s given the last statement of his view of people in the case, the NCAA, the FBI and the Coaches. He feels there was a cover up; possibly because he’s more right than wrong. And possibly because the FBI, the Southern District of New York and the aforementioned coaches wouldn’t participate in the movie, which is a sure sign there is more to the story. We hope there is a part two!Has HBO ever made a bad documentary? Will it satisfy sports fans who are bummed that March Madness was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic? Jarod is joined by Christian Dawkins on this episode. Dawkins is the subject of the HBO Sports documentary "The Scheme." Dawkins talks about how he found himself caught up in one of the largest criminal cases in sports history. Big time collegiate athletics is a multibillion dollar industrial complex and calling it amateurism is a sham created by the NCAA to fatten the pockets of certain people and not others. Yesterday should've been the national title game but i'm not mad, I promise. The wound is healing but it's been a tremendously slow process. In order to alleviate the pain we had to jump back on and talk The Scheme on HBO featuring Christian Dawkins. Surprise: we thought it was dumb. Then we interview one of the most energetic and positive individuals we've ever had, Pantelis Xidias. He tells us about the season DePaul had, how the postseason cancellation was conveyed to him and he coins the term "Hypeful." Finally we end with Hugs and TWIT.

Mike Dunn returns -- from a safe distance -- to talk about HBO's college-hoops bribery-scandal doc The Scheme. Christian Dawkins, centerpiece of the film "The Scheme" (debuting March 31 at 9pm ET exclusively on HBO) joins Sports Business Radio Host Brian Berger for an in-depth conversation. In THE SCHEME, Christian Dawkins faces the camera for the first time and explains in fascinating detail how a kid from Saginaw, Michigan ended up in a hotel suite surrounded by FBI agents with a warrant for his arrest. Dawkins was orchestrating massive cash payments to top high school prospects with the help of Adidas, and, unbeknownst to him, undercover FBI agents. Ultimately, guilty verdicts on a range of fraud and bribery charges would leave Dawkins with approximately eighteen months of prison time. THE SCHEME also features, for the first time, wiretap audio of conversations Dawkins had with Will Wade (LSU Head Basketball Coach) and Sean Miller (University of Arizona Head Basketball Coach). But before the film debuts on HBO on March 31, Christian Dawkins joins Brian Berger for a wide-ranging conversation about the making of the film, why he chose THE SCHEME as the place to tell his side of the story and his thoughts on the current college basketball landscape and the NCAA. Dawkins also discusses Will Wade (LSU), Sean Miller (University of Arizona) and Rick Pitino (Iona). Dawkins’ candid conversation with Berger also includes a comparison of signing music artists to his current record label and how that differs from the ability to sign young athletes and why Dawkins believes that is wrong. Dawkins provides an insider’s perspective into the college basketball landscape unlike any you will hear. Matt Norlander has been covering the trial from Manhattan, and he and Gary Parrish react to the verdicts and also lay out why this case was tipped in the government's favor from the get-go. Do those three men really deserve to be going to prison? Parrish and Norlander make arguments why this feels surreal and unnecessary. They also touch on what the NCAA now stands to do, and how coaches like Bill Self and programs like Kansas remain a high point of interest. Learn more about your ad choices.
