So, what's the real story of Richard Brumfield? Even today, it's a remarkably unsatisfying account. There's plenty of evidence that Brumfield committed the murder — but there's also a bunch of evidence that makes no sense at all in that context. Why would a murderer mail a box of sexy panties to the exact place he planned to run away to, the day before an apparently premeditated crime? Was “Mrs. Norman Whitney” a real person, and if so, who was she? Did Brumfield have a second family in Calgary? Then, too, why would a man who's contemplating a murder like this use such a small amount of dynamite? Why would he stage the entire pageant on Pacific Highway, the most heavily traveled road in the area? Was there a second man involved in the plot, as the district attorney broadly hinted to reporters? Why was his wife so doggedly insistent that the burned corpse was that of her husband, when it was so obvious to everyone else that it was not? Was she in on it? And those suicide attempts: How many people, crazy or not, can cut two inches into their own throats with a dull instrument? How many can hang themselves from a bunk bed without help? If he had help, who could have provided it? It's possible that all these anomalies can be explained by Brumfield simply being an unhinged homicidal maniac, and yeah, maybe that's all there was to it. But looking back over the record at all the loose ends hanging off this messy little murder mystery, a person sure has to wonder. On a warm summer's evening in 1921, Dr. Richard Brumfield loaded about a dozen sticks of dynamite into his snazzy red convertible and left Roseburg, headed for handyman Dennis Russell's tiny shack in the hills near Dillard. Dr. Brumfield had hired Russell to blast out some stumps from around a rural farm property he owned. At least, that's what he'd told Russell when he hired him. But, as it turned out, he was lying about that. What Brumfield really wanted to hire Russell for was to impersonate a corpse. His corpse.... Brumfield, and Brant C. Faircloth. Https://doi.org/10.1111/ibi.13276. Music written and performed by Katherine Camp   Transcript (Piano music plays) Kiersten - This is Ten Things I Like About…a ten minute, ten episode podcast about unknown or misunderstood wildlife. (Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating.  This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. This is the penultimate episode of Screamer and the ninth thing I like about this animal is their eyes and beaks. One of the things that is often overlooked in bird is their eye color, so today we will delve into the variations that exist by looking through the eye of the Screamer. Bird beaks, or bills either is correct, also vary extensively through out the avian family. Beak shape often indicates what type of food the birds eats, but like everything else about the Screamer, things are not always as they seem. Bird eye color varies more than anyone expected. Not many researchers have attempted studying this characteristic and the few that have taken up this research topic and finding more questions than answers. Colors ranged form dark black or brown to vivd emerald green, sapphire blue, scarlet and crimson, turquoise, and even white. There is even a bird with pink eyes. It is absolutely amazing the various hues that birds' eyes contain.  Irises can be one color or more than one. The eyes of Rock Pigeons, one of the most disliked birds around the world, are bicolored starting with a ring of yellow on the outside and red/orange close to the pupil. The Satin Bowerbird has eyes with a vibrant blue ring on the edge of eye with an equally vibrant ring of purple next to the pupil. The Three-streaked Tcharga has a ring of light spots that look like stars set in a dark background giving them some of the most unique bird eyes around.  Eye color in birds can change as a bird matures, for example Osprey eye color changes from red as juveniles to yellow as adults. Sexual dimorphism is also present in some species of birds meaning the female's eyes are a different color than the male's. Seasonal changes in eye color can also happen, for example Brown Pelican eyes change from brown to blue during breeding season. Southern Screamers and Northern Screamers both have brown eyes as adults, while Horned Screamers can have yellow to orange to red eyes as adults. To clarify, I found no research indicating that these birds eye color changes as they age, but I could only find reference to their adult eye color.  There are three things that contribute to the color of a bird's eye, pigments, blood vessels, and structures. These three color options are still being closely studied but certain pigments are responsible for light colors and different pigments are responsible for darker colors. For example, carotenoids are responsible for the orange color of birds in Family Anatidae which includes certain ducks. An increased amount of blood vessels in the eye creates the red eyes of some species.  Why do bird have such varied eye color? The short answer is we just don't know. It could be related to how they find food, where they nest, diurnal versus nocturnal behaviors, communication, or another reason we have not thought of yet. Much more research needs to be done to answer this question, but for now, we can marvel at the extreme variation of bird eye color.  Now, let's take a look at some bird beaks. Just like eye color bird beaks vary tremendously. They can be wide and flat like a duck, tweezer-like similar to a gnatcatcher, chisel-like as the raven's beak, long and thin like a hummingbirds, and deeply curved like the honeycreeper. These are only a few beak shapes found in the avian world. What a bird eats can impact the shape of its beak. Keeping this idea in mind, let's look at the Screamer's beak. Screamers eat leaves, stems, flowers, and roots of aquatic vegetation, so we might assume that their beaks would look at lot like their closer relatives ducks, geese, and swans who also eat similar items. Duck bills are flat and wide with some serration on the inside to help grasp aquatic grasses, but as we know Screamers have a hooked beak reminiscent of a raptor beak.   Hooked beaks help raptors tear apart their prey to facilitate swallowing. If the Screamer eats plant material why does it have a small hooked beak? It has to be hard work to get enough food using a smaller beak to pick up leaves, flowers, and plant roots. It is so much effort for a food item that is low in calories. Once again there is no easy answer to this question, but new study discovered that what a bird eats isn't the only determination of beak size and shape. Turns out we should be thinking about the birds beak in the same manner that we think of our hands. Beaks are not just for eating, they are for manipulating the environment.  Screamers may have hooked beaks to help them build nests, feed their young, or manipulate their environment in ways that we have yet to discover. Once again Screamers are pushing the boundaries of normal avian behaviors. Thank you for joining me for the ninth episode of Screamers. I hope you learned something new, I know I did and my ninth favorite thing about Screamers is their eyes and beaks. If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change.  Join me next week for the final episode of Screamers.        (Piano Music plays)  This has been an episode of Ten Things I like About with Kiersten and Company. "Building" swim sets consist of one or more rounds of effort of a specific distance where you increase your intensity level during each effort. This increase can be prescribed as either a gradual build throughout the effort or stepped increases at each lap. Why It Works: Enhances pacing awareness by training different effort zones within a single rep. Improves muscular endurance by incorporating a mix of steady-state and high-intensity efforts. Develops speed control with structured builds and descends. Mimics race-day demands by conditioning you to shift gears smoothly. Breaking It Down: Warmup & Prep Work: 400-600 warmup with skills and drills   Main Set 8 x 25 as odds @ Z2, Evens Build (15 sec) 4 x 50 Desc 1-4 ( 15 sec) 100 Choice  The opening set gets you primed with shorter distances at varying efforts: 25s and 50s focus on gradual builds and controlled descends, waking up speed while reinforcing technique. 100 Choice lets you ease into the workout with your preferred stroke or focus area. Main Set – 4 Rounds of: 4 x 75 (25 sec) as 50 @ Z1, 25 @ Z2 50 @ Z1, 25 @ Z5 25 @ Z2, 50 @ Z4 75 Build to Z5 2 x 50 Drill Choice (20 sec) Each 4-round cycle focuses on controlled effort changes within each 75: First two reps balance steady swimming with a finishing push. Third rep reverses the effort, starting moderate and ending fast. Fourth rep builds all the way to Zone 5, pushing your top-end speed. Drill-focused 50s in between rounds reinforce efficiency before the next push. The Finisher – Kicking & Cooldown 2x 100 Kick (20 sec) 100 Kick sets add a strong aerobic and leg endurance component. Cooldown allows for a return to relaxed, controlled form. Cool Down Balance of time @ Z2 and/or repeat warmup drills as time permits. Takeaways: This workout is perfect for triathletes needing to fine-tune their ability to push through different effort levels in a race. Whether it's the back half of a long swim or a surge to catch a pack, Building 75's train both strength and strategic speed control—exactly what you need to swim smarter and faster on race day. Give this one a go and let us know—how do you handle changing speeds in the water?   Fun Segment: Life in the fast lane!!!  How It Works: Each guest gets hit with 5 rapid-fire, high-stakes triathlon scenarios. You can either race with… A tri kit 2 sizes too big A casio calculator watch with zero smart functions Nutrition Nightmare Your only nutrition options on the bike are… An entire gel flask of mystery flavor A banana that's been rolling around in the bottom of your bag Mid-Race Musical Madness You're stuck with ONE song on repeat for the entire run. This Day in Legal History: Constitution of Norway SignedOn this day, May 17, in 1814, the Constitution of Norway was signed, marking a pivotal moment in the country's history. This significant event established Norway as an independent kingdom, following centuries of union with Denmark. The constitution was drafted at Eidsvoll by the Norwegian Constituent Assembly, composed of prominent figures who were determined to assert Norway's sovereignty and democratic principles. The document drew inspiration from both the United States Constitution and the French Revolution, emphasizing individual rights, separation of powers, and a parliamentary system. It remains one of the oldest constitutions still in use today, symbolizing Norway's commitment to democracy and freedom. The signing of the constitution laid the groundwork for Norway's future political development, even though it initially faced challenges. Shortly after its adoption, Norway entered into a union with Sweden, which lasted until 1905. Despite this, the constitution was largely preserved and served as a foundation for Norwegian governance during the union period.Today, May 17 is celebrated as Constitution Day, or "Syttende Mai," a national holiday in Norway. The day is marked by vibrant parades, patriotic displays, and public speeches, reflecting the pride Norwegians take in their constitutional heritage. It is a day for Norwegians to celebrate their history, culture, and the enduring values enshrined in their constitution.Constitution Day serves as a reminder of Norway's journey towards independence and the establishment of a democratic society. It honors the vision and determination of those who, over two centuries ago, laid the foundation for a free and sovereign nation. The celebrations highlight the enduring relevance of the principles set forth in 1814, which continue to guide and inspire Norway's democratic institutions today. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the funding mechanism for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), allowing it to continue drawing money from the Federal Reserve rather than Congress. This decision was a victory for the Biden administration and a setback for conservative critics of the agency. However, the Supreme Court's conservative majority still poses a threat to federal agency powers, with pending decisions that could limit their authority in various sectors. These upcoming rulings, expected by the end of June, involve significant cases concerning the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).The CFPB ruling, a 7-2 decision written by Justice Clarence Thomas, reversed a lower court's decision that the funding method violated the appropriations clause of the U.S. Constitution. Despite this win, the broader conservative push to reduce federal regulatory power continues, with legal scholars predicting further setbacks for agencies. The SEC faces challenges to its in-house judicial proceedings, while the NMFS case could lead to the reassessment of the "Chevron deference," a doctrine that directs courts to defer to federal agencies' interpretations of ambiguous laws.Additionally, the EPA's "Good Neighbor" plan, aimed at reducing ozone emissions, is under scrutiny by several Republican-led states and energy companies. These cases reflect ongoing conservative efforts to limit the scope of federal regulations and reshape administrative law.Despite consumer watchdog's US Supreme Court win, agency powers still on chopping blockAt Donald Trump's criminal trial in New York, his former attorney Michael Cohen testified that Trump directed him to pay Stormy Daniels $130,000 to silence her about an alleged affair before the 2016 election and then falsify business records to cover it up. While Trump's lawyers have tried to discredit Cohen, experts note that prosecutors have supported his testimony with phone logs, documents, and other witnesses. For instance, David Pecker, former publisher of the National Enquirer, testified about efforts to suppress damaging stories, and recordings and call logs showed frequent contact between Trump and Cohen during the negotiations. Despite substantial circumstantial evidence suggesting Trump's involvement, Cohen's claims about specific conversations remain uncorroborated, especially without testimony from Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization's former CFO, who could confirm or refute Cohen's statements but is not expected to testify. The defense will likely argue that Trump delegated detailed business matters and that there was nothing improper about categorizing payments as legal fees. Trump, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, claims the case is a partisan attempt to disrupt his presidential campaign.Trump prosecutors' hard evidence bolsters Michael Cohen's testimony, experts sayTop lawyers for major U.S. airlines collectively earned almost $50 million in 2023, highlighting the industry's reliance on in-house legal expertise. United Airlines led with President Brett Hart receiving nearly $15 million, including substantial stock awards and cash compensation. Delta Air Lines' Chief Legal Officer Peter Carter earned over $13.1 million, reflecting his additional role and pandemic leadership. These compensation packages underscore the crucial role of legal teams in navigating regulatory, union, and consumer disputes. Despite pandemic pay cuts, airlines now offer competitive salaries to retain top legal talent.Other industry legal leaders also received significant compensation, with FedEx's Mark Allen earning $5.4 million and JetBlue's Brandon Nelson $4.9 million. This trend reflects the high value airlines place on experienced legal professionals to manage complex legal and regulatory environments.US Airlines' $50 Million Lawyer Pay Shows Industry's Legal NeedsMicrosoft's upcoming appeal of a $242 million patent verdict is set to intensify debates about the role of foreign activities and apportionment in calculating damages. The verdict, awarded to IPA Technologies Inc., found that Microsoft's Cortana infringed on a patent related to its US-based servers. The jury decided that each time a user command was processed by these servers, it constituted infringement. The central issue in the appeal is how damages are apportioned, particularly regarding the extent of infringement and the inclusion of non-infringing features. Legal experts anticipate that Microsoft will challenge the damages calculation, arguing that the verdict oversimplifies the product's functionality and inflates the damages.A significant aspect of the debate involves the Federal Circuit's recent decision in Brumfield v. IBG LLC, which allows for the consideration of foreign sales when calculating damages if they result from domestic infringement. This precedent was used to support the current ruling against Microsoft.Judge Richard G. Andrews ruled that the damages theory used by IPA was appropriately apportioned, considering both infringing and non-infringing elements of Cortana. However, the complexity of apportionment and the challenge of accurately valuing the patented technology's contribution to the overall product make this a contentious area likely to be scrutinized on appeal.Legal experts believe that while Microsoft will argue that the calculation was flawed, the detailed economic and technical analyses required in such cases will be pivotal. The Federal Circuit's history of closely reviewing these aspects suggests a rigorous examination ahead.Microsoft Mega-Verdict Appeal Primed to Test Patent-Damages LawThis week's closing theme is by Maurice Ravel. Maurice Ravel, a prominent figure in the world of classical music, was born in 1875 in the Basque town of Ciboure, France. Renowned for his intricate compositions and masterful orchestration, Ravel's work spans a variety of genres, each infused with his distinctive style. One of his remarkable contributions to the realm of classical music is the "Rapsodie espagnole," a four-movement orchestral suite that showcases his fascination with Spanish culture and music.Among Ravel's diverse compositions, "L'heure espagnole," a one-act opera, stands out for its vibrant portrayal of a comedic love story set in a Spanish clockmaker's shop. Premiering in 1911 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, this opera exemplifies Ravel's ability to blend humor with musical sophistication. The fourth movement of "Rapsodie espagnole," titled "Feria assez animé," embodies the spirited essence of a Spanish festival, capturing the lively and festive atmosphere through its dynamic rhythms and vivid orchestration."Feria assez animé" transports listeners to the heart of a bustling Spanish feria, where the excitement of the crowd and the exuberance of the celebration are palpable. Ravel's meticulous attention to detail and his exceptional skill in orchestration are evident in this piece, making it a delightful auditory experience. As we delve into this week's closing theme, we invite you to immerse yourself in the colorful and animated world that Ravel so brilliantly brings to life.Without further ado, "L'heure espagnole" by Maurice Ravel, enjoy. Bird Eye Color

Summary: Have you ever noticed how many different eye colors birds have? Join Kiersten and Cheryl as they delve into this understudied topic.   For our hearing impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean.   Show Notes: “Bird Eye Color” A Rainbow of Variation, a Spectrum of Explanations,” by Eamon C. Corbett, Robb T. Brumfield, Brant C. Faircloth. https://ecoevorxiv.org/repository/object/3682/download/7316 “Bird Eyes Come In an Amazing Array of Colors – but Why is a Mystery,” by Meghan Bartels; Audubon February 2023. www.audubon.org Our email address, please reach out with comments, questions, or suggestions:  thefeathereddesert@gmail.com   Kiersten: Intro: Eye color in birds is often something we might overlook. But it's incredibly fascinating. Bird's eyes come in a variety of colors and can even vary throughout one individual's life. Today Cheryl and I are going to talk about eye color in birds.   Cheryl: We all know how colorful bird's feathers appear. They can be blue, red, yellow, even green. This is one of the reasons birds have been studied by scientists for so long and one of the main reasons we want to attract birds to our backyards. We want so see those bright, fabulous colors. Scientists want to know what's up with all the colorful feathers, and while this is fascinating and important research, it has overshadowed the other amazing colorful characteristic of birds: their eyes.             Here in the southwest, the Curve-billed Thrasher, is an example of bird with a brightly colored eye. Adults have bright orange eyes. It's an iconic characteristic and a great way to distinguish them from other types of thrashers.             Birds' eyes come in many different colors from dark-brown to light-brown to reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and even white. Within these colors, a range of hues exist such as the turquoise of the Double-crested cormorant, the emerald green of the Black-and-red Broadbill, the crimson red of the Bronzed cowbird, the sunset orange of the Painted buttonquail, and the school bus yellow of the Short-eared owl.             Birds even have multi-colored irises. Our Curved-billed Thrasher's orange eye is actually a combination of an outer ring of orange with an inner ring of yellow to red near the pupil. The underappreciated Rock Pigeon actually has a beautiful eye with a ring of red on the edge and a ring of yellow around the pupil. The Greater Roadrunner, another of our southwest residents, has an eye with rings of brown and yellow around the pupil. Most of the birds with multi-colored iris have symmetrical coloration, but a few have asymmetrical coloration.             The Bank Cormorant's eye is an earthy orange on top while the bottom looks like a turquoise stone. Looking at this bird's eye is like looking at an Arizona sunset. Some female oystercatchers have dark eye flecks on only one side of the pupil giving their eye a keyhole appearance.   Kiersten: It is amazing the colors that are found in the avian world, but the light bright colors are less prevalent than the darker colors. A study released early this year, in 2023, has compiled information previously researched about eye color and they noticed some trends.             It appears that more birds have darker eye color, such as brown and black, than light eye color. Birds, as a whole, have darker eyes on average than other vertebrate groups including mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Looking at passerines, such our songbirds, 64% had black to dark brown eyes, 19% had light brown to red eyes, and 17% had the lightest eye colors including yellow, orange, white, pink, blue, and light gray.             Non-passerine birds, such as hawks, owls, ducks and other water birds, have lighter eyes than passerines. 40% were dark, 22% were the intermediate light browns and red, while 38% were light. The dark versus light hues found in birds do tend to follow phylogenetic lines. Birds in related families tend to have the same level of eye color. They may not always have the same eye color exactly but they are often categorized the same as dark, medium, or light. What we've talked about so far is differences of eye color between species but there are differences in eye color within species.   Cheryl: There are typically three reasons eye color will vary within a species. Number 1: Some birds are born with a darker eye color that will lighten as they age. For example, our Curve-billed Thrasher is born with brown eyes that change to orange only when they are adults. Spotted towhees have dark brown eyes as juveniles that turn red when they are adults. Osprey chicks are born with orange eyes that lighten to yellow when they are adults. Number 2: Twenty-four species of birds have been shown to have differences in eye color between sexes. Essentially males and females of the same species will have different colored eyes. Common grackles are a good example of this. The males have bright yellow eyes, while the females have brown eyes. Brewer's blackbird females have dark brown eyes while the males have a bright yellow. In a reversal, Saddle-billed Stork males have dark brown eyes while the females have bright yellow eyes. Number 3: Eye color can vary seasonally. A small handful of birds that we currently know about will change eye color during breeding season. The Brown Pelican male's eyes will change from a brown color to a light blue at the beginning of breeding season and remain blue until incubation begins. The male Great Blue Heron's eyes will turn red during breeding season and be yellow the rest of the year. Female chickens eye color may change when they are laying eggs.             There are a few birds that are able to change their eye color based on their mood. They can expand or contract the blood vessels in their eyes to change the color of the iris. We actually have a bird in our own backyard that can do this, the Inca Dove.             For those of you who are cross-country birders, you may be familiar with one last reason that the same species of birds can have varied eye color, population differences. Species that have a large habitat range can develop differences in eye colored based on the eye color that is most popular in a specific region. For example, a House Finch from Arizona might have a slightly different eye color from a House Finch born in New Jersey. They will most likely be in the same range of color but they can vary.   Kiersten: Now that we know what kind of colors exist in birds' eyes, let's look at how these colors are created. In humans' eyes different levels of melanin create our eye color. Melanin is also involved in creating color in bird feathers, for more on this please check out our previous podcast on feathers. If you are thinking melanin is involved in creating bird eye color, you're partially right!             There are a variety of pigments, blood vessel dilation, colorless oil droplets, collagen fibers, and other structural features that create the colors that we see in bird eyes. According to the 2023 research paper, color created by chemical pigments are created by living cells called chromatophores which is unique to avian eyes. To further amaze us, we cannot assume that one bird with a red eye created by the carotenoid pigment means that all birds with red eyes have carotenoids making their eyes red. For example, Canvasbacks, Red-eyed Vireos, and Bronzed Cowbirds all have red eyes but they are all produced by different means. Canvasbacks red eyes are created by carotenoids, Red-eyed Vireos are created by another pigment called pteridines, and the red eyes of Bronzed Cowbirds are caused by the dilation of blood vessels in the eye. The known mechanical contributors of bird eye color are carotenoids, melanins, purines, pteridines which are all pigments, and blood vessels, collagen fibers, oil droplets, and cholesterols. Birds can have reflective structures such as a crystalline pteridine or purine, colorless oil droplets, or collagen bundle in the eye that often creates the lighter colors. To create, color birds can have one or a combination of any of these. Species with only pigments present in the eye typically have a duller eye color such as the Northern Flicker and the Cactus Wren. Now, I'm not saying their eyes aren't a nice color or even a pretty color, I mean more like the difference between a shiny new penny versus an older well-worn penny.  Birds with only reflective structures in the eye have a white iris, like the Acorn Woodpecker.             Generally speaking, birds with darker eyes have more melanins while birds with lighter eyes have more purines and pteridines. Birds with bright, almost sparkling eyes have reflective structures such as crystalline purines or pteridines, collagen bundles or oil in the eye. The next question is why do birds have so many different eye colors?   Cheryl: The answer is….. we don't really know. Very little research has actually been done on eye color in birds. What we can do is generalize about eye color based on other attributes of birds. We know that birds that molt into adult colors do not breed until they have their adult color pattern, that could be a reason for juvenile change of eye color as well. The change of eye color may indicate readiness to breed. The same can be said for changing colors before breeding season. A male with a good head of feathers can indicate a healthy male and attract female attention. This might be the same reason for the change of eye color before breeding season begins.             Other reasons could be survival. The birds with a particular eye color survive best and they are the ones to pass down their genetics. Maybe the eye color allows them to camouflage better than other individuals. Maybe it's based on how they obtain food. Foragers versus hunters? Is there a pattern to who has which eye color? What about their habitat? We do know that birds that live in sunnier places have more melanin in their feathers because it makes them last longer. Maybe this is also true for their eye color? Maybe the melanin protects their eyes. Does the eye color have anything to do with communication between individuals of the same species? We know that wing postures, feather color, and sound are all important in communication, maybe eye color is as well. Or does none of this have anything to do with eye  color at all?             Sadly, we don't have the answers because no long-term research has been done on bird eye color. It is definitely a topic that needs much more attention in the future.   Kiersten: One of the things we can do as citizen scientists to help this research along is take pictures! Especially those of you with the patience for wild bird photography. Taking pictures of birds eyes with your telephoto lenses and uploading them to eBird will help these scientists move forward in their research.  Closing: What we've talked about in this podcast probably seems like a lot of information, but this research was only done on a small portion of bird families. We need much more research done concerning bird eye color. And, we don't know yet, but this could be the next big epiphany we have in animal behavior. What we know today is terribly fascinating, but I think many more amazing discoveries await us in the future.

During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes across 550 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean.   Eric successfully led his first expedition to the South Pole in 2008, covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now one of only a few Americans in to have skied to both the North and South Poles.   In November 2009, Eric returned to Antarctica for the first leg of his world record Save the Poles expedition. This time he completed a 750-mile ski traverse to the geographic South arriving on January 2, 2010.   Two short months later he was dropped off at northern Ellesmere Island for a winter-style North Pole Journey. The international team reached the North Pole 51 days later on Earth Day - April 22, 2010.   He completed the Save the Poles expedition by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest on October 15th, 2010 becoming the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' within a 365-day period.   In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the most cold and hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen's and Waters' trip—dubbed the "Last North Expedition"—is expected to be the last human-powered trek to the North Pole, ever. Her vision and leadership led the development and implementation of USA Triathlon's most recent strategic plan – Elevate 2028 – that sets the path for the organization through the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   “I'm honored to lead USA Triathlon during such an important time, and I want to thank Joel, the USA Triathlon Board of Directors and members of the hiring committee for the opportunity,” Brumfield said. “Multisport is transformative, unifying and empowering, and I am proud and ready to wake up every morning and bring this sport and community to more people. I look forward to working closely with our constituents and team to continue to spread the virtues of our sport far and wide, serve our community in a way that enables everyone to prosper, build on the development programs for youth and junior athletes, and celebrate our sport and community every day.”   A trailblazer and advocate throughout her career, Brumfield was hired as the first female member of the USA Triathlon's Executive Leadership Team. Brumfield's leadership has elevated and empowered female leaders within the organization at every level of the organization. Additionally, Brumfield has been a staunch proponent of diversity, equality, inclusion and access (DEIA) during her time at USA Triathlon and worked to make DEIA a focal point of the organization's long-term strategic plan, annual priorities and hiring processes, among other areas.   Brumfield has helped transform USA Triathlon's approach to service and the constituents it serves, most notably race directors, clubs, coaches, officials and age-group athletes. She has instilled a focus on building meaningful relationships with community members across the United States and emphasized the need for both resource development and initiatives and programs that drive value at the grassroots level.   Prior to her appointment as interim CEO Brumfield most recently served as USA Triathlon's Chief of Staff and Chief Business Development Officer. She led the turnaround of USA Triathlon from a transactional entity to an organization celebrated for its service leadership by fostering a culture of collaboration both internally and externally. With a people-first approach, Brumfield helped USA Triathlon earn best-place-to-work recognition by Front Office Sports, Outside Magazine, and Colorado Springs Gazette.   In 2020 Brumfield was named the Chief Business Development Officer, in addition to her Chief of Staff role, and led business development and partnerships. Under her leadership,U USA Triathlon led unprecedented commercial growth and strategic partnerships, even while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.   In her role as Chief of Staff, Brumfield was responsible for directing strategic planning, managing and streamlining the organization's operational plan, and overseeing cross-functional projects with large-scale organizational impact. She also directly oversaw business administration including human resources, finance, and information technology (IT), for three years.   Brumfield currently serves on the World Triathlon Audit Committee and was a member of the SportsBusiness Journal “Game Changers: Women in Sports Business” 2020 Class.   Prior to USA Triathlon, Brumfield worked in the endurance sports industry for nearly 20 years across a number of roles that gave her both a broad understanding of the business of the sport and the opportunity to grow and inspire triathlon communities at the local level. Most recently, she was a founding member of the Virgin Sport start-up in Sir Richard Branson's global Virgin Group. Before Virgin, Victoria's roots were deeply embedded in triathlon as the former Event Director for the New York City Triathlon, IRONMAN US Championship, 2003 ITU World Cup in New York City, 2005 ITU Age Group World Championships in Hawaii, and 2004 USA Olympic trials for Triathlon, among others.   Brumfield is a passionate amateur short and long-distance triathlete and endurance athlete. She studied finance and earned a Master of Business Administration from the NYU Stern School Of Business. She currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.   You Get What You Give, Ask Primal Why By Bill Plock Nov 6, 2022–Denver  In 1998, The New Radicals released the song, “You Get What You Give” and it seems to have resonated strongly as a business mantra with premier cycling apparel manufacturer Primal of Denver.   As I looked around the room at the Four Seasons conference room during the PrimalBike 2022 gathering a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that between all of the rides represented here, well over $150 million is raised each and every year for a variety of causes; cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, college scholarships, community causes and so much more.   Between the rides, tens of thousands of riders explore roads in every corner of America. The reason they were all in Denver? Primal, a thirty-year-old company supplies cycling clothing for all of these rides and the cyclists who spend hours raising money and a lifetime rolling on roads.   Thirty years ago, Dave Edwards made some cool cycling t-shirts and sold them out of the back of his car in Moab. They were a hit and one thing has led to another and thousands upon thousands of designs later Primal has evolved into one of cycling's top brands of cycling wear.   Each year, Primal invites some of their top customers to meet and discuss the “state of the union” in cycling events and ponder the future, and share ideas on how to improve events and the sport of cycling. This year's attendee's included leaders from MS, RAGBRAI, Bike New York, Pan-Mass Challenge, Outside, and many others. All of the organizations attending, some for-profit and most non-profits, raise enormous money, but so does Primal.   Since its inception, Primal has given away over 12 million dollars. Says founder, President/CEO Dave Edwards about the gathering, “the most meaningful part is making connections and sharing knowledge and experiences. We're privileged to work with incredible partners, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to get together in a setting that inspires learning, conversations, and relationship building that makes their events even better while getting more people on bikes.”   The Pan-Mass Challenge, in particular, raising $63million in one ride for cancer research leads the peloton of charity. Said President, Jarrett Collins, “Primal is a great partner for the Pan-Mass Challenge because they support many of our teams with high-quality kits, AND they give back to the fundraising efforts of those teams, all in the service of defeating cancer!”   The group had break-out sessions focused on discussing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to trends such as gravel, or as Jarrett Collins termed, “unpaved”. Steve Schulz from Cycle Oregon gave us a peek behind the curtains of their Community of Giving (COG) program and the impact their ride has on its communities and how it helps build everything from community centers to improving community relationships.   The group took to the streets and rode bikes to further build camaraderie and consider ideas aimed at getting more people on bikes and raising more money.   Ken Podziba, President of Bike New York holds the largest one-day ride in the United States, the Five Boro Bike Tour with over 32,000 riders (303 articles about the ride HERE) and said of the conference, “the conference, which was interesting, engaging, informative, and entertaining, provided an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of our country's top bike event organizers.  I left Denver with a much greater knowledge of Primal's creative and managerial processes, learning things we can apply to our events, and making some awesome new friends – now that's a successful conference!”   If you measure yourself by the peers you attract, Primal has attracted many of the best of the best when it comes to top cycling events and raising money for good causes. You Get What You Give seemed more than obvious at PrimalBike 2022.   Aspen unicyclist left his mark on famed Iron Horse Bicycle Classic It's only fitting that Aspen's Mike “Pinto” Tierney is going out “No. 1” in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.   Not “No. 1” as in the fastest in the famed race and recreational ride between Durango and Silverton. Nor did he log the most years riding in the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year on Memorial Day Weekend.   Instead, he is the guy who has turned heads for tackling the grueling 47-mile ride over two mountain passes exceeding 10,000 feet on one wheel.   In Aspen, Tierney is famed for working 40 years on the exalted Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol and for regularly riding his unicycle up Independence Pass and Maroon and Castle Creek roads — and even on a variety of mountain bike trails in the Roaring Fork Valley.   In Durango and Silverton, he's known as the crazy dude who rides a one-wheeled cycle with no brakes up and down some of the most challenging passes in Colorado.   “A 63-year-old unicycling 50 miles from Durango to Silverton sounds a little crazy. I don't mind being called crazy,” Tierney said.   This year's event was his eighth and final Iron Horse. “I was the only unicyclist to do it, ever,” he said. Others started, none finished. He heard of a unicyclist from Cortez who rode the route, just not during the Iron Horse.   Unicycles weren't allowed in the event prior to 2005. Rules changed and Tierney jumped at the opportunity — and promptly got humbled. Six unis started. The other riders dropped out along the route. Tierney started with the two-wheeled riders and was quickly left in the dust. One restaurant hung a sign on the door saying, “Free food to Lance Armstrong and any unicyclist that finishes.” By the time Tierney finished, the restaurant was closed for the day because all riders had long since finished.   He changed strategy the next time he rode it in 2015. He started an hour early and got the flats north of Durango out of the way. In that and subsequent years, he got used to the racers sweeping by him on lower Coal Bank Pass, then the recreational riders catching him higher up the major ascent. He completes the ride between 6 and 6.5 hours.   It's not about finishing fast. It's about finishing on one wheel. Other cyclists marvel at how he can tackle the steep ascents and hair-raising downhills on a cycle with one speed and no brake. He rides a 36-inch wheel. He grinds up with 170mm crank arms and swaps them out to 140mm for the downhills.   Over the 45 years since he started riding a unicycle, he's learned to seek the slow cadence of pedal strokes on the downhill. If he cannot maintain it and gets going too quickly, he's got to jump off. He's never had to do it in his eight Iron Horses. While bicycle riders get to coast on the downhills, Tierney still has to work.   For Tierney, it was particularly humbling to get accolades in a couple of notable celebrations of the Iron Horse's 50th anniversary. There is a section about him in a book marking the anniversary, “Fiftieth Anniversary, Looking Back Racing Forward” by John Peel. His accomplishments also are included in a special exhibit at Fort Lewis College's Center of Southwest Studies. The exhibit, “Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture,” is on display until spring 2023.     Invitation to TriDot Pre Season Project The Preseason Project® is a triathlon research initiative that helps TriDot quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training™ delivers over training alternatives. On a warm summer's evening in 1921, Dr. Richard Brumfield loaded about a dozen sticks of dynamite into his snazzy red convertible and left Roseburg, headed for handyman Dennis Russell's tiny shack in the hills near Dillard. Dr. Brumfield had hired Russell to blast out some stumps from around a rural farm property he owned. At least, that's what he'd told Russell when he hired him. But, as it turned out, he was lying about that. What Brumfield really wanted to hire Russell for was to impersonate a corpse. His corpse.... Victoria and I caught up LIVE at The Marni On The Move podcast pop up at IRONMAN World Chamionships in St. George, Utah back in May, when she was Chief of Staff and Chief of Business Development for USA Triathlon. Since then she is in this new role, which is super exciting, so I gave her a buzz last week to get up to speed.  Beyond her top leadership role at USA Triathlon and impressive career in the world of endurance sports, Victoria is an incredible endurance athlete and does it all road, gravel and MTB cycling, triathlon, running, and so much more. We met years ago in NYC when she had just graduated with her MBA from NYU, was working in the world of endurance sports, and  racing as an amateur cyclist, she truly walks the walk! Victoria and I sync up about the role of USA Triathlon in the world of endurance sports, the growth trajectory they are predicting for 2023,  how USAT  is creating opportunities for all kinds of athletes-newbies and veterans to dial in to the sport, and of course, we talk about all of the races Victoria has on her schedule and the training she does to stay fit for these events. A method for distributing money, garnered from the sale of assets, is expected to be discussed at a court hearing on September 9th before U.S. District Court Judge Steven D. Grimberg of Atlanta, according to court filings. There's no indication how much of the money from the asset sales, which are still ongoing, will be available to share between investors or when distributions may take place, court papers show. Losses to investors to date amount to about $68.2 million, filings show. In August 2021, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that John Woods operated the Ponzi scheme for more than a decade and defrauded more than 400 investors. John, who at the time was a minority owner of the Chattanooga #Lookouts #MinorLeagueBaseball team and had overseen operations of an investment firm in the city, allegedly collected $110 million from investors with promises of 6-7% returns. But the #SEC said in court papers that investments John made in a number of companies and in real estate deals, several in Chattanooga, were worth far too little for there to be any realistic prospect of paying back investors their principal, much less the promised returns. An SEC spokesman declined to comment beyond the court filings earlier this month. John in court filings has denied the allegations by federal regulators of running the Ponzi scheme and asked for a jury trial in the civil case. He has not been charged criminally.                     STORY 2:Fire   The Marietta @Fire Department was on the scene of a fire early Sunday evening at the Cobb courthouse complex in downtown Marietta. Five Marietta firetrucks responded to the scene. #CobbCountySheriff's Office said the fire was in Building D, Magistrate Court Building. The courthouse is closed Sundays. No injuries were reported. One eyewtiness said at the onset of the fire, flames could be seen coming from the roof of the building. As of 6:30 p.m., the blaze had been contained and firefighters continued to monitor for hot spots.                     STORY 3:UNLV   Even after #UNLV football's largest margin of victory under Marcus Arroyo, the third-year head coach said he wasn't afraid to admit that there were still some areas that need improvement. But for now, he took time to enjoy the #Rebels' 52-21 season-opening win over Idaho State Saturday at Allegiant Stadium. Michigan State transfer #RickyWhite made an impact in the second quarter, starting off by hauling in a 72-yard touchdown pass from Brumfield. All 182 of his receiving yards and both touchdowns came during UNLV's 35-0 showing in the second quarter. Ricky is a former standout for #MariettaHighSchool. The Rebels have a bye next weekend and travel to face #California in #Berkeley on September 10th.       STORY 4:Princess ***Audio MDJ Cinderella*** ***Audio Cinderella Instrumental BED***  The Marietta High School Theatre hosted aspiring #princesses and their parents Saturday for a morning of dancing, singing, and fun at the Once Upon a Tea Party fundraiser show. The Marietta Performing Arts Center was packed Saturday as students dressed up as different themed princes, princesses, and sidekicks from the #Disney character world and beyond. Music from princess-themed movies played as cast members at the school danced and performed on stage, as the auditorium of the center was transformed into something befitting #WorldPrincessWeek, an annual event going on at #DisneyParks this week. The Once Upon a Tea Party event was introduced five years ago when Holly Smith, the schools' head theater director, met another teacher at a convention who shared the fundraising idea with her. Similar to a Disney character breakfast, the event starts with the student performers walking about the set up tables in the lobby, visiting with kids as their princess personas while they enjoyed cupcakes and coloring. The crowd then gathered in the auditorium where students performed different numbers from Disney shows, concluding with the kids being brought on stage to learn the waltz from different characters. The students rehearse for a period of three weeks, starting production work and auditions in July, practicing two to three times a week. The students were eager to dive into their roles, only needing a combined 12 hours of rehearsal time before they were ready. The funds raised through the event benefit the booster organization of the theater department. The booster organization helps cover the cost of department productions, costumes, props, field trips, conferences and college scholarships. Last year, the booster organization was able to provide two college scholarships to students.                 Commercial Commercial             STORY 5:International The #CobbInternationalFestival returned this weekend for the first time following a two-year hiatus due to #COVID-19. The event center of Jim R. Miller Park saw heavy foot traffic for the entirety of the six-hour event. People were eager to soak in all of the local and international music, shows and a wide variety of international cuisine offered by the many vendors surrounding the pathways. Returning for the first time since its debut in 2019, the festival shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Michael Brantley, director of Cobb County Parks and Recreation. Michael said he and his team recently noticed more people wanting to get out of the house and do things, and they knew it was time to restart the festival. Parks and Recreation coordinated the festival, according to Cobb County Commission Chairwoman #LisaCupid, and pulled staff from across different Cobb County agencies to help plan the event. Vendors paid a fee for each table set up.. Lisa Cupid spoke to the crowd early Saturday afternoon, officially kicking off the event. She invited different consulate representatives on stage to share greetings in their native languages, including members from South Korea, Ghana, Nigeria and Canada, to name a few.                   STORY 6:  Kell    #Kell is on its first winning streak of the Bobby May era. The #Longhorns jumped in front early while holding #Allatoona to just 113 yards of offense and taking advantage of four Buccaneer turnovers to win 21-9 on Friday in their home opener at #CobbEMC/#CorkyKellStadium. It allowed Kell to continue the momentum it gained from beating Cherokee Bluff to begin the season in last week's Corky Kell Classic. Allatoona threw two interceptions in the second quarter — the second coming on an attempted touchdown pass — and changed quarterbacks. However, what hurt the Buccaneers the most was a bad snap midway through the second quarter, which Kell's Nelson Woghiren scooped up and returned 59 yards for a touchdown. Allatoona's lone touchdown of the game came midway through the fourth when it recovered a high snap from Kell at the Longhorns' 1-yard line. Quarterback Saadiq Teel punched it in on the next play to cut the Kell lead to 12 points. The Buccaneers' only points of the first half came on a 47-yard field goal by Grey Kelley.   .         Commercial Commercial Thanks again for listening to today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast.
