On Saturday the Giro d'Italia rolls out of Pescara on the Adriatic coast and, as ever, The Cycling Podcast will be there to document every stage, every polemica and every violation of the sacred codes of Italian gastronomy.  In this episode, Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and Brian Nygaard present our comprehensive preview of the first Grand Tour of 2023: who is riding, where the race is going and – if you'll indulge our uncharacteristic speculation – who is likely to be in pink when the peloton arrives in Rome.  We hear, too, from our sometime Italian historical and cultural guru, John Foot, about the state of Il Bel Paese in 2023. There are also interviews with one of the men masterminding Remco Evenepoel's Giro bid, Soudal-Quickstep coach Vasilis Anastopoulos, and the journalist who, whatever happens on the road, will, as ever, be the undisputed crowd favourite of the next month, Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport.  The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. Our Giro reaches Milan after three weeks on the virtual road. We set out from Budapest in Hungary, then spent a few days in Sicily before making the familiar journey the length of Italy, visiting the Dolomites and the Alps and now it's the last leg. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back to the 2017 Giro, won by Tom Dumoulin, who famously had to stop to answer the call of nature by the roadside on the stage to Bormio. We speak to Dumoulin about that day and his Giro victory in general. There's also the final member of Ciro Scognamiglio's Giro Dream Team, the last visit to the kitchen for Lionel and finally we remember some of our favourite memories from the four editions of the Giro The Cycling Podcast has covered from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who has joined us on the journey – we hope you've enjoyed listening to Our Giro as much as we have making it. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. In this episode of Our Giro, we meet Trek-Segafredo general manager Luca Guercilena and learn about his career in professional cycling. Guercilena was not a pro rider but a sports scientist, whose career began with the Mapei team – where he tested a certain Daniel Friebe and, according to some observers, failed to spot the talent in front of his eyes(!) Later on, he was part of the Leopard-Trek team which has evolved through several identities to become the Trek-Segafredo team today. In this episode, Guercilena talks about some of the riders he has worked with over the years. We also hear from Ciro Scognamiglio, whose Giro Dream Team is nearing completion, and Lionel makes the Lombardy favourite, polenta with sausage ragù. Every year, the Giro d'Italia shows off the best countryside Italy has to offer. It's not to say that France and Spain are not blessed with great scenery but Italy seems to provide the most consistently beautiful backdrop for the racing. The Giro's slogan – the toughest race in the most beautiful place – might have a touch of hype but it's probably fair to say it is the most photogenic of the three grand tours. In this episode of Our Giro, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look at the visual aspect of the Giro. We meet legendary photographer Graham Watson, who witnessed the drama of the Giro more more than three decades before retiring to New Zealand. Graham explains why the Giro was his favourite race to photograph and watch and looks back at some of the most memorable moments – from the duel between Stephen Roche and Roberto Visentini in 1987, to Marco Pantani's brilliance in 1998 and downfall in 99, to Alberto Contador coming straight from the beach to win a decade later. We also talk Italy's sense of style on and off the bike with Sir Paul Smith, who designed the maglia rosa in 2013, and Andy Storey, who runs through some of the most memorable Italian jerseys. Plus author and cultural historian Kassia St Clair talks about the power and charm of the colour pink. There's also the latest rider added to Ciro Scognamiglio's increasingly eclectic Giro Dream Team and François Thomazeau plays us out with La Vie En Rose. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. LINKS You can check out some of Graham Watson's finest photographs on his website (https://www.grahamwatson.com/) . You can also buy his books, prints and posters. Andy Storey's book on the history of cycling jerseys is called The Art of the Jersey. You can buy some great retro remakes at prendas.co.uk (https://www.prendas.co.uk/) Kassia St Clair's book is called The Secret Lives of Colour. COMING TOMORROW We meet the only American to win the Giro, Andy Hampsten. This is the first of a two-part interview with the 1988 champion. In part one, we talk about his breakthrough stage win during the 1985 race. COPPA ITALIA OF CYCLING JERSEYS What is the best-looking Italian cycling jersey of all-time? You decide. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at Paris-Nice, the last World Tour stage race before coronavirus brought the world to a halt. In stage 13 of Our Giro we hear from Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe who was in sparkling form this spring, finishing second at the Volta ao Algarve before winning Paris-Nice, which made its way to the French Riviera as Europe was on the verge of lockdown. The race continued in surreal circumstances, as Daniel describes in this episode, and was curtailed a day short. Schachmann – who won a stage of the 2018 Giro at Prato Nevoso the day before Chris Froome attacked and cracked Simon Yates – talks about Paris-Nice, how he hoped to capitalise on his excellent spring form and what the future holds when racing returns. We also hear from Andrea Agostini, chief operating officer of UAE Team Emirates, who was in the UAE as the virus began to spread among riders and people working on the race. Agostini was hospitalised in the UAE before recovering enough to return home. This episode also reveals the next member of Ciro Scognamiglio’s Giro Dream Team, and there’ll be few surprises about who he has chosen as team leader. In 2010, Richie Porte was a first-year professional and rode the Giro d'Italia for Saxo Bank. Then came the stage to L'Aquila, which had been hit by a terrible earthquake the previous year. A huge break got away and gained a lot of time. Porte was in it and ended the day in the pink jersey. We hear from Porte about that Giro and the stage to L'Aquila in particular. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe for a rest day. Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie discuss the racing and the impact coronavirus is having on professional cycling before Daniel Friebe dials in from France to talk about the opening days of Paris-Nice. Ciro Scognamiglio also updates on the situation in Italy following the cancellation of Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-Sanremo and a host of other spring races. We also hear Gianni Savio’s latest tactical masterclass and eavesdrop on a Slovenian cycling fan berating Primoz Roglic’s sports director at the finish. Stage three of the 2019 Giro d’Italia took the riders from the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci to Orbetello, with the wind and threat of rain making the peloton nervous. Join Lionel Birnie, Daniel Friebe and Ciro Scognamiglio in Orbetello as they discuss the day’s big controversial moment – the relegation of Italian champion Elia Viviani for irregular sprinting. Viviani’s victory was handed to the second man across the line, Fernando Gaviria. As tears of joy turned to frustration for Viviani’s dad, who was watching in his camper van at the finish, we ask whether it was the right decision. Mario Cipollini’s former lead-out Mario Scirea made a bid to be considered cycling’s Arsene Wenger, claiming not to have seen the incident. We wrap up a tricky day for the overall contenders and their teammates, hearing from Mitchelton-Scott’s Simon Yates and Luke Durbridge and Miguel Angel Lopez’s climbing domestique Dario Cataldo. Gianni Savio reveals his cycling formation, we meet a former refugee turned professional cyclist and much more in a podcast that’s packed despite the relative lack of action in the stage.

The Tour de France resumed after its rest day with a dramatic opening stage in the Pyrenees. An incident early in the stage paused the race. A protest by farmers brought the peloton to a halt and police seeking to get things under control used tear gas which then blew into some of the riders’ eyes. We explain what was happening. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau are joined by Daniel Friebe and Ciro Scognamiglio to discuss the big talking points. There was Julian Alaphilippe’s second stage win, a crash for Adam Yates when he looked to be moving into a winning position and some puzzling tactics by teams that should have their eyes on the overall race for the yellow jersey. Ciro gives us an update on how Italy’s Tour is going following the crash that ruled out Vincenzo Nibali and Gianni Moscon’s disqualification. We then turn attentions to tomorrow’s 17th stage – a short, explosive 65-kilometre stage with an innovative ‘gridded’ start. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.

We also hear from Dimension Data’s young Australian rider Ben O’Connor after his impressive ride on Mount Etna, plus we reveal what links the Calabrese mafia, the stage start town of Pizzo and Groupama-FDJ’s Swiss rider Steve Morabito. November 22 | Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe meet up in central London after their sell-out West End show at the Arts Theatre to discuss the latest training camp and team building trends. The Australian Orica-Scott team plan to break with established training camp tradition by moving hotels each night, making it more like a stage race, rather than spending time at one base. While it might break with the routine and give the riders a change of scenery every day, will it be the most effective way to prepare for the season. We also discuss the two big controversies of recent weeks – the decision by UK Anti-Doping to close its investigation into what was contained in the jiffy bag delivered to Team Sky at the end of the 2011 Critérium du Dauphiné, and Phil Gaimon's allegation that Fabian Cancellara used a motor in his bike. There's also a sneak preview of our forthcoming episode for Friends of the Podcast focusing on Team Sunweb, and highlights from Ciro Scognamiglio's appearance with Richard and Lionel at the Rapha Cafe in London's Spitalfields last week.
