My guest today is Svein Tuft.He is the  character straight out of the Jack London book "The Call of the Wild"He was professional cyclings unconventional cyclist, but his unconventional approach is what made him so successful. He knew what worked for him, he knew how to extract the best of himself for his success and his team's success. He famously dragged the peloton for 190km in the Italian stage race Tirreno-Adriatico.He won thirteen Canadian National Championships, represented Canada at the Olympic Games, was part of the Orica-GreenEdge team for 8 years, he was the driving force in time trial victory on stage 1 of the 2014 Giro d'Italia, where he spent time in the maglia rosa leaders jersey. He raced in the Tour de France, Giro D'Italia, the Vuelta a Espana, the one-day classics and week-long stage races, and he secured the silver medal in the time trial at the 2008 UCI Road World Championships. When he wasn't clocking up thousands of kilometres on the paved roads as a professional cyclist,  he was escaping to the wilds of Andorra and British Colombia on epic adventures into the unknown. His true calling is to discover and explore trails and single tracks into the mountains and wilderness. He is happiest when he is out on a ski touring adventure into the backcountry or humping his gravel bike over some monstrous mountain pass into the unknown. On today's show,  We talk about all this and more, so I think you are going to enjoy listening to Svein's adventures.Hello friends, I am your host ASHLEY PETTIT welcome to another episode of Beyond the Mountains podcast. Chronicles is a new podcast that I'm excited to be bringing as exclusive member content for 2024. This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo.  For this series, I've got together with my good friend and former team (and room) mate Svein Tuft. As a few of you will know, ‘Sveino' is a fascinating guy, with a unique perspective on pretty much any subject out there.  Both Svein and I love to dive into new topics – take them apart and discuss ideas, theories, and trends from every possible angle. Back in our racing days, we would spend hours - in the saddle or hotel rooms, chewing over ideas, challenging each other, and looking at ways to learn and develop our understanding of the sport.  This is what we wanted to recreate with Chronicles. It's a chance for us to get together and get stuck into the topics that interest us in and around pro cycling. We'll be listening to people's stories, asking questions, doing the research, and gathering the information that allows us and you to get to grips with these key parts of the sport and the wider culture of pro cycling.  First up, this month we started with a question that we have both been looking for the answer to: how do you turn professional?  This was something that jumped out at us when we thought: why us? How did we make it, and not others? What did we do so differently or well? Or was it just luck?  To unpack this subject, we wanted to get as many angles of the conversation as possible, and we have a whole host of people with a range of opinions and expertise.  We kick things off with a man who wrote the book, ‘How to Become a Pro Cyclist', Jack Burke and asked the question, if turning pro really is something that you can engineer, or if it's too random even for people who ‘get' how the system works?  Svein spoke to a key figure in the US racing scene Jonas Carney, the former manager of Human Powered Health, to discuss what a team looks for when selecting riders, whilst I spoke to my old boss Matt White of Jayco Alula about how teams work with agents to find new talent.  Sticking inside the teams, we also caught up with Sebastian Langeveld from EF Education Easypost who oversees scouting riders for EF and asked him if it was all numbers and data these days or if there is such a thing as the X factor.  We also spoke to two current riders, James Whelan of Q36.5 and Riley Sheehan of Israel Premier Tech, who gave us opposing stories of what happens when you get to the World Tour too easily and how hard it can be to have to battle through the ranks.  Just as we hoped there was so much great stuff that we could get stuck into here, turning pro and how you do it is a massive topic that certainly doesn't have a simple answer. And as always with Svein, the fun part was exploring the subject! Have a listen as we do our best to understand all about it.  Cheers! Mitch

Today's guest never lost that desire, and in fact, his desire for freedom on two wheels took him on some EPIC adventures, and led to him riding in some of the world's most notable cycling races.Svein Tuft former pro cyclist, with major accomplishments in the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia, where he wore the Maglia Rosa. He is a rugged outdoorsman, a trailblazer, a mountaineer, and someone who is not defined by limitations, but rather by sheer will and a determination to take the road less travelled.Svein is truly one of a kind, the saying "they don't make them like this anymore" seems rather fitting for him, although he is as humble as he is accomplished. And it was a great pleasure sitting down to chat with him. And listening in some measure of awe and wonder to the legendary tales he tells that are simply moments of his journey.Whether you follow cycling or not, this conversation will inspire you, it will leave you longing for adventure, and will hopefully help you see the potential in all of us to take on seemingly wild and impossible things!Enjoy the rideZ&DLooking for a little more? 190: Is Perceived Exertion the Most Important Metric?

Fast Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2021 96:19

There are many ways to measure intensity. This is an episode about the one that is often forgotten: RPE. Perceived exertion is a standardized way to classify a subjective feeling. We've touched upon RPE in many episodes, often referring to the fact that top pros all know "the feel." Today, we argue that the metric of feeling—perceived exertion, RPE, sensations, whatever you call it—is in many ways the most important metric. Yes, we're arguing that it is even more important than power and heart rate. We set the stage by defining RPE. Next, we lay out our argument for why RPE may be the most important metric—whether in the training or racing context. Then we turn our attention to ways to learn how to understand or interpret feelings to determine RPE. It's not an easy task, but there are certain steps you can take to hone your sense of, well, sense. Finally, we discuss the best ways to use RPE, from the ability to assess where you're at to knowing what efforts of a given length "feel like" so that you can then use that to pace in races; from adjusting power and HR in training to how the sRPE scale can be used to integrate off-the-bike workouts into overall training load. Since this is a summary episode, we pulled from previous episodes to hear from a host of the most prominent coaches, athletes, and researchers, including: Jeff Winkler, Joe Friel, Kristen Legan, Amos Brumble, Dirk Friel, Kristin Armstrong, Ned Overend, Dr. Stephen Seiler, Kate Courtney, Svein Tuft, and Julie Young. So, this is it, retirement. Or, to put it another way, the longest off-season of my life. I've ridden my final race and in a few short weeks I will be officially retired from the professional peloton. When I made the decision that this would be my final season as a rider, I wanted to prepare myself for what comes next. And so, over the course of the year, as my mindset has changed and I've got closer to my final race, I spoke to some friends and former teammates about what to expect. In this episode, I speak to eight people who have all adjusted to retirement – some very recently, such as Tejay van Garderen, some longer ago like David Millar. Brett Lancaster, Andreas Klier and Robert Wagner have all stayed in the sport in some way, whereas Dom Rollin has gone in a completely different direction. I also speak to Grace Elvin and my good buddy Svein Tuft about the ups and downs of no longer being a pro athlete. What's it like to no longer be the best at something? How do we adjust to regular life? What can those who have gone before me tell me that can help me prepare for my own retirement? This is the final episode of Life in the Peloton for 2021. I hope you've enjoyed our season of shows. Thank you for all your support and kind comments and I'll see you on the road. When you watch the Olympics, do you think about the dedication, sacrifice, and risk that it takes to focus on such a big event, one that takes four years to prepare for? The pressure is immense. Is it worth it? When we invited Olympians Svein Tuft and Errine Zarsadias (you may remember her as Erinne Willock from her racing days) to join us on Fast Talk, we intended to discuss whether it was wise to focus on a single big race—for example, that Olympic Games or world championship race, or, for the amateurs among us, the state championships or that one big race you always wanted to win. What are the benefits of such focus? What are the dangers? While we did broach that subject, we ultimately ended up discussing so much more, from goal setting to purposeful training. Svein, an 11-time Canadian national time trial champion and two-time road champion, and Errine, a Pan Am Games silver medalist, each share their personal experiences with the Olympics and worlds, the things they would change and the things they'd do the same, in hindsight. They discuss the dangers of putting all their eggs in one basket—the dangers of placing too much emphasis on a single day or course. They also discuss how having a purpose and other goals based on enjoyment are perhaps the most rewarding and, ultimately, most performance-benefitting mindsets you can take. In addition to Svein and Errine, we hear from prominent sports psychologist Julie Emmerman and elite coach Kendra Wenzel who each share their perspective on the best way to target races. When Chris Froome first came to prominence on the WorldTour and started dominating grand tours, all the talk was about how he was constantly looking at his stem. Was he staring at his power meter to gauge his effort? Entire websites were devoted to catching Froome in the act of looking at his head unit while racing his bike. https://chrisfroomelookingatstems.tumblr.com/     While Froome now claims he isn't staring at his power and it has to do with breathing, the point deserves attention given the metronomic nature of some pro racing. If you did look at your numbers the whole time, would you be faster?    Today, we're sitting down with TrainingPeaks co-founder Dirk Friel to discuss what numbers, if any, you should use to gauge your racing efforts. Of course, any discussion of how to race a bike naturally evolves into a broader conversation about strategy, tactics, psychology, and even equipment. So, today you'll gain plenty of insights into general race craft.    Most of the discussion will be about the numbers: which numbers can help you, and in which race setting they're most appropriate, and just as importantly which numbers can hurt your racing or at least your mindset. We'll also discuss how you can use numbers to prepare for specific races, and even to plan out your race.    In addition to Dirk Friel, today we'll also hear from sports psychologist Simon Marshall, former WorldTour rider Svein Tuft, pro racer Shayna Powless, and athlete and coach Jen Sharp.  Learn more about your ad choices. I’m not going to pretend to know much about time trials. I’ve done one. I also did an Hour Record on the track. That was fun, ahem.  On the other hand, our main guests today are arguably the greatest athlete-coach duo in the history of time trials. Kristin Armstrong won three Olympic gold medals and two world championship titles in her gilded career, and Jim Miller was her coach the entire time.   The pair have a fascinating story about the way they dissected the discipline and dominated their competition. It wasn’t necessarily the most traditional method, as you’ll hear, but it was undoubtedly effective. Throughout our conversation, there are a host of fascinating and fruitful messages about how they looked at and broke down the race of truth.  On a more practical note, we also hear from one of the greats on the men’s side, Svein Tuft, as well as Sebastian Weber, who coached four-time world champion Tony Martin during his illustrious career. Finally, we get some sage advice from tech guru Nick Legan about how to bring speed to time trials even if you have a small budget.  All that and much more as we explore both the art and science of time trials, today on Fast Talk.  Let's make you fast!  Learn more about your ad choices. Recently, Ryan Anderson announced his retirement from pro cycling. He’s been at it since 2008. In that time, he might not have risen to the same heights as say his frequent teammate Svein Tuft or some of his contemporaries, such as David Veilleux or Hugo Houle. But Anderson is the last of a certain generation of pro road cyclist. He’s been on all the influential Canadian road outfits of the past 15 years including Symmetrics, SpiderTech and Rally Cycling. Technically, Rally is registered in Minneapolis, but there’s always so many Canadians on that team, both on the racing side and on the management side, that it gets honorary citizenship.Anderson got his start daydreaming his way through mountain bike races in his home province of Alberta. Then he moved to banging bars on the road. Later he worked as hard as he could to get to Europe to race against the sport’s best. He’s seen a lot during the past 13 years. Teams and races have come and gone. As Anderson takes his leave from racing, he looks back at people and events that shaped him and that continue to shape road cycling today.

The saddle time seemed to prepare him nicely for spending the day in the breakaway at the world championship road race soon after. Since then, Britton has continued to have some long adventures on his bike, including a big trip to Japan in November 2019 and a gravel epic earlier this year.In this episode, Britton covers all kinds of topics related to bikepacking. He talks about how he sometimes pushes himself and his friends. He’s very safety conscious, and even has some good advice about when and how to take risks. There’s discussion about gear, including his go-to equipment list. He puts a lot of thought into every gram including what goes in his flask. After you hear this interview with Rob Britton, you’ll want to plan a big cycling adventure.

At one time one of the greatest cyclists in the world. Before that he lived like a hobo, dropped out of highschool to climb mountains and explore. From Alaska down to Mexico on a thrift shop bike and self welded up trailer to tow his gear and dog named "Bear". Sveino can only be reffered to as a legend even though he's often described as the Chuck Norris of cycling. Google his name and you'll read stories of him fighting off a wolf that attacked his dog in the middle of the night with a hockey stick up in the Yukon. You can't make this stuff up. Sveino could fill endless podcast episodes with stories and I've been fortunate enough to call him one of my close friends and mentors for some time so I wanted to get out more of the stories not yet publicized. Svein's been and continues to be a mentor to the current best cyclists in the world and has given more to developing and helping young Canadian cyclists than any other club or organization yet never has asked for any recognition. Please enjoy stories beyond imagination from a man unlike any other.

There's a Giro d'Italia flavour to a very special episode of Life in the Peloton. Mitch Docker gets the Orica-GreenEdge band back together to tell the story of an unforgettable Giro for the team. Orica-GreenEdge won the team time trial in Belfast to put Svein Tuft into the maglia rosa. The following day the jersey swapped to the shoulders of his teammate Michael Matthews and the Orica riders spent the next week defending the lead. Later came a stage win in pink for Matthews at Montecassino and another for Pieter Weening at Sestola. For this episode, Mitch has spoken to his old teammates plus sports director Matt White about the build-up to the Irish Grande Partenza and the pressure of going into the first stage as one of the favourites. Together they piece together the story of a band of brothers battling together to do the best for their team. This episode was recorded remotely during lockdown. The producer was Will Jones. So, without further ado let Mitch introduce you to Luke Durbridge, Michael Hepburn, Brett Lancaster, Michael Matthews, Cameron Meyer, Svein Tuft, Pieter Weening and Matt White.
