At 21 years old, Luke Lamperti is already riding for one of the biggest teams in the WorldTour, Soudal–Quick-Step, and he's hit the ground running. Since the season began, he's racked up podiums at the Challenge Mallorca, the Muscat Classic, and the Tour of Oman, solidifying his place as a young rider to watch. Before signing with Quick-Step, he raced alongside Tom Pidcock on the Trinity Racing development team where he honed his reputation as a formidable sprinter, but he's still figuring out where his skills lie. At the start of the season, Quick-Step manager Patrick Lefevere invoked Tom Boonen's name when speculating about Luke's potential as a Classics rider, and the team has already given the newcomer plenty of opportunities to flex his muscles.Luke sat down with Payson in Girona earlier this month to talk about his first few months in the WorldTour, including what it's like to have your idols become your teammates, coming to terms with just how good riders like Wout van Aert are when you have to race alongside them, and why his lifestyle hasn't changed much despite having joined the highest echelons of the sport. He also talks about growing up in a ranching family, his love of motocross, and keeping a level head despite the breathless media coverage surrounding his first season. Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

It was left to Jan Tratnik to ‘save' Visma-Lease a Bike and take the win…with Van Aert having to wait until the following day's Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne to open his Classics account for 2024. We discuss these and other notable performances from the two races, and also hear from Bahrain Victorious's Fred Wright about what went…wrong for him at Omloop. Julian Alaphilippe, too, has had better weekends, and would have been hoping for a better response to his boss, Patrick Lefevere's, recent criticism in the Belgian media. Glasgow Worlds reaction; Remco latest (yes, again!); transfer market update; the feelgood story of the Worlds; Federico Bahamontes remembered

There's so much action taking place at the Glasgow "Super" World Championships  that there's hardly been time to squeeze in a podcast, but we've finally managed it and these are RadioCycling's latest headlines...We start, of course, in Scotland, with the World Championship version of the Wacky Races. It's been frantic, but fun. There's been griping about too many corners, too many potholes and even too much racing, but it's been impossible to avoid being swept up by the quantity, quality and beauty of the action. As well as offering our take on "cycling's Olympics", we hear from USA's Neilson Powless, British track gold medallist and (first the thing the next morning) Mixed Team Time Trial Relay member Ethan Vernon, and from Ineos coach, Team GB silver medallist and new father Dan Bigham. Despite various attempts to kill it, most notably from the man himself, the Remco Evenepoel transfer story refuses to go away.  In our latest update, we look at the spat between the rider's dad/agent and Soudal-QuickStep boss Patrick Lefevere and ask the obvious question: will he stay or will he go now?One of the central issues in the Remco saga is his team's need for reinforcements. In our analysis of the latest transfer news, we discuss whether Soudal-QuickStep are doing enough to satisfy their team leader's demands, highlight the new Portuguese stage racing talent who's been nabbed by UAE Team Emirates, and detail why the big winners in the transfer market have been... Lotto-Dstny.   Returning to the Glasgow Worlds, we also have one of the feelgood stories of the season. It features two Ugandan racers who've emerged from a biking-crazy orphanage in their home country to compete at the Worlds. We tell the story of U23 Paul Lomuria and junior Lawrence Lorot who, thanks in large part to a British bike event and charity,  are now attracting the interest of elite teams. We end with reflections on one of the sport's climbing greats, and arguably the climbing great, Federico Bahamontes, who died earlier this week – Tour winner, mountains king and fabled lover of an ice cream.Support the show

After an enthralling second edition of the Tour de France Femmes finishes with Demi Vollering's overall victory in Pau, these are RadioCycling's headlines...Bigger and better than in 2022, with a stronger, deeper and more competitive field, the Tour de France Femmes built towards a dramatic climax in the Pyrenean mist that will stay in the memory. We get a rider's perspective on the race from French star Audrey Cordon-Ragot.One of the dominant stories of the Tour de France Femmes was the crackdown by the UCI jury of commissaires on riders drafting behind cars when rejoining the peloton after a crash or a mechanical. Race winner Demi Vollering was penalised for doing it, while her Team SD Worx DS Danny Stam was kicked off the race for facilitating this. We examine the historical context for this hardline approach, hear from Stam and a fellow DS, Uno-X's Huub Duijn, who was also penalised, and from AG Insurance Soudal Quick-Step team leader Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, who tells us the rules should be strictly and consistently imposed at all races.Remco Evenepoel's reign as world champion ended with him winning last weekend's Clásica San Sebastián, but the saga of his rumoured transfer away from Soudal-QuickStep rumbles on. Chris Marshall-Bell, who's so well informed on this story that even S-QS boss Patrick Lefevere asks him for the latest developments, provides an update on the those developments. As had been the case at the Tour de France, the issue of motorbikes and rider safety was highlighted on a number of occasions during the Tour de France Femmes. Adam Hansen, president of the riders' association (CPA), details the ways that things could be improved and explains his own invention of a laser-based system that could ensure that motorbikes don't hamper or interfere with racers.  And finally, in Ground Beans...– the latest on the transfer tug-of-war over Carlos Rodríguez– Caleb Ewan and Lotto-Dstny reach agreement on sprinter's future– Irish sprinter Sam Bennett set to move?Support the show

As the Tour de France pauses in Saint-Gervais for its second rest day, these are RadioCycling's latest headlines...The Tour remains on a knife-edge, with Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard so close to each other that they might as well be riding a tandem. We reflect on a Tour that's shaping up as even better than last year's and potentially as one of the best of all time. There's another fascinating battle going on away from the Tour action. The race for Remco Evenepoel is heating up. Although his Soudal-QuickStep boss Patrick Lefevere is adamant that he's got his Belgian team leader tied to a contract until 2026, the rider's "entourage" says he's not happy at being paid less than a third of Tadej Pogačar's salary. We hear from Lefevere and, with Ineos said to be interested, speak to their head of sport Dave Brailsford. We also reveal that no fewer than three other teams are ready to bid if Evenepoel does become available. Are Caleb Ewan and the Lotto-Dstny team heading for divorce? That seems increasingly likely after team manager Stéphane Heulot questioned the Australian sprinter's commitment and attitude after Ewan abandoned the race on Friday. We look at why Heulot's so aggrieved and hear from Ewan's agent, who suggests a permanent separation is possible before the Australian's contract ends at the end of next season.Another manager was making news at the Tour on Sunday, or more precisely an ex-manager. Legendary Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger was one of the race's VIPs in the Alps, and told RadioCycling about his long-time love of cycling, how the sport has followed the same science-focused path as football, and gave his verdict on the Pogačar-Vingegaard battle. And finally, in our Coffee Beans section...– Roglič sticks with Jumbo-Visma despite Ineos rumours– Brailsford confesses he's missed cycling Support the show

As the Tour de France heads for the Pyrenees, these are RadioCycling's news headlines...Wout van Aert hasn't looked like a happy camper at times during the Tour's opening days, but Jumbo-Visma's head of performance Merijn Zeeman tells us that there's no rift  at all between the Dutch team's multi-talented Belgian powerhouse and their Danish leader and defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard. It's nothing more than the Belgian press creating something out of nothing, Zeeman asserts. Our man in the Tour's media mixed zone, Chris "Listen Boy" Marshall-Bell, catches Soudal-QuickStep boss Patrick Lefevere in chatty mood even when the subject of team leader Remco Evenepoel's future is brought up.  Lefevere tells us Remco's happy where he is, has signed a contract to 2026, and that Ineos should look elsewhere for another Grand Tour big-hitter.Four days into the initiative that has resulted in messages broadcast over team radio being relayed on TV broadcasts and the initial verdict is in. And the 17 teams taking part are... largely indifferent to be honest. However, Bora-Hansgrohe sporting director Rolf Aldag acknowledges that they can be useful to fans, even in situations where teams might be embarrassed about what's being said.We also speak to Astana-Qazaqstan team manager Alexandre Vinokourov, who talks Mark Cavendish, welcomes the arrival of a new secondary sponsor, insists that the Kazakh team will retain its general classification focus, but knocks down the suggestion that there's any weight to the rumours that they might have an interest in bringing Colombia's Nairo Quintana back into the peloton from competitive exile.PLUS, in our Coffee Beans segment at the end of the show...• Netflix  set their focus on Mark Cavendish for series 2 of Unchained   • Jai Hindley backs Simon Yates for a Tour podium challenge• Sam Bennett wants out of Bora after Tour non-selectionSupport the show

Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl doubled up over the first three stages – with successes for Yves Lampaert and Fabio Jakobsen – while BikeExchange–Jayco's Dylan Groenewegen collected the final stage in Denmark ahead of the rest day and the race heading to France. Mielke revealed that the lack of crosswinds on the Great Belt Bridge will have left director of the Tour Christian Prudhomme disappointed with a dream crushed. Wiggins, Stephens and Mielke look at Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team's stunning start to the 2022 edition of the race. Patrick Lefevere had come in for some criticism for leaving Mark Cavendish out of the Quick-Step line-up. However, Stephens added that Cavendish has no issue with Fabio Jakobsen or his selection for the race, but hinted that clear communication regarding selection was a little lacking. While Lefevere is a polarising character – who should not be immune to criticism - his winning mentality is beyond reproach, adds Stephens. The guys also talk Groenewegen's emotional win, and “the classiest act in the world on a bike” Wout van Aert. Wiggins re-lives the Grand Depart in the UK, and there is special praise for fans from Denmark after the opening three stages.
