Stage 18 of the 2026 Tour de France was another huge day in the Alps, taking the riders 185.2km from Voiron to Orcières-Merlette with 3,900 metres of climbing. On paper, it looked like another day for the GC contenders—but instead, the breakaway finally had its moment. A world-class group fought all day for the stage, with Richard Carapaz, Matteo Jorgenson, Mauro Schmid, Valentin Paret-Peintre and Tobias Halland Johannessen all sensing a rare opportunity. When the attacks finally came on the final climb, it was Carapaz who made the decisive move, riding clear on the slopes to claim EF Education-EasyPost's first stage victory of the Tour after weeks of relentless attacking. Behind, the general classification battle never truly ignited, despite Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe setting a hard tempo on the final climb. Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas all crossed the line together, meaning the fight for yellow—and the battle for the remaining podium places—remains delicately poised heading into the Tour's decisive mountain stages. However, there were signs that UAE Team Emirates-XRG may not be quite as invincible as they have looked. Brendan McNulty abandoned the race through illness, Adam Yates was dropped long before the finale, and for the first time in the high mountains, Pogačar looked noticeably lighter on support. Is that simply the cost of three demanding weeks, or is there finally an opportunity for his rivals to exploit? Elsewhere, Mads Pedersen strengthened his grip on the green jersey by comfortably taking maximum points at the intermediate sprint, putting himself back in control of the points classification after Jasper Philipsen's victory the previous day. The big one starts on Saturday, so I sat down with Durbo and Southam for a special EMERGENCY PODCAST to preview the 2026 edition of the race. Who better to preview the biggest race of the season with than two guys who are going to be there; Southam in the team car as a sports director for EF Education Easypost, and Durbo riding his 12th and final Tour de France for Greenedge.    Kicking off this weekend with a team time trial in Barcelona, the race then heads up through the Catalan roads that Luke and I trained on together when I was across in Europe. This may be the Tour de France, but this is basically a home stage for Girona resident Durbs. From there, the Tour crosses the Pyrenees into France and - although there are a few big mountains in the first two weeks of the race - the route this year is very back heavy, climaxing with not just one, but TWO ascents of the infamous Alpe d'Huez. After 20 brutal days of racing, the pelo jet across to Paris for the awesome new final stage with the cobbled climb of Montmarte to draw the curtain down on another Tour de France.    Of course, as well as the big preview we have our regular segments. In PeloChat Durbo's asking the question; is it worth going to the traditional Tour de France warm up races any more? More and more riders are favouring training camps over racing to get a better quality build without the risk of crashing, picking up an injury, or just totally rooting yourself before the big show in July, but what's the best way to prepare for the Tour?   Over in Talking Tactics, Southam's diving into where that tipping point in GC is for riders just underneath the top tier favourites. Where do they have to be sitting in the top 10 or 20 before they decide to sit up, let the overall go, and head up the road in breakaways in search of a stage win. The likes of Pidcock, Ayuso, Lipowitz, and more who could stretch for a podium if everything goes there way, but could really turn the race on it's head if they decide to go for stages.   The Communiquiz is a super simple quickfire from quizmaster Durbo; which teams ride which bikes. After the final breakaway stuck, the stage looked poised for a reduced bunch sprint, until one rider decides not to wait and attacked with 1km to go. Harry Sweeny He's one of the strongest riders in the pelo right now. They don't call him ‘The Truck' for nothing.   I spoke to Harry in person over in Adelaide at this year's Tour Down Under and picked his brains about everything from his journey into the sport, his transition from Lotto to EF Education Easypost, how his neurodiversity makes him a better bike racer, and heaps more.    Harry's a super interesting guy. He's a consummate professional and leaves no stone unturned in his hunt for being the best athlete he can be. Hearing Sweendog talk through how he prepares for every single race, and the level of detail with which he plans every gel, every corner, every meter of road covered really opened my eyes as to how hard he works.   Up until this point, Harry's cut his teeth in the bunch riding as a domestique; turning himself inside out for team mates to great success - pulling guys like Ben Healy to monument podiums and the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France. But, after a conversation with his team boss Jonathan Vaughters, Harry's finding the confidence to ride for himself and show how strong he can be. As JV put it, ‘being 10% more of an arsehole'.   Not long after we recorded, Harry's efforts were rewarded with an absolutely stellar podium finish at the Tour Down Under - his first World Tour GC Podium. It's a fantastic result, and - I think - marks a real shift in focus; he knows he's got the engine to go toe-to-toe with the big guys, and now he's proved it out there on the road.    I loved chatting to Harry, and I hope you guys enjoy listening to one of the most hard working, enthusiastic pros out there.    Prefer to watch along? Ahead of the final week of racing, it's still all to play for. We've got the mega-talented young Isaac Del Toro holding onto the Maglia Rosa, bookies' favourite Primoz Roglič dropping out of contention, and a handful of riders poised to go all out to try and unseat UAE's dominance before the finish in Rome. Tom Southam's been called up to bat for EF Education Easypost, so he's cruising around Italy in the team car, and he's already netted a pair of stage wins with Richard Carapaz and Kasper Asgreen! With Southam away, we've had a bit of a roster change for this month's Race Communique; we're joined by my old mate and fellow ex-professional, Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe sports director, the Flying Mullet himself - that's right, it's Shane Archbold. Shane'o joins me and Luke Durbridge - fresh off the back of the Tour of Hungary - to dissect the racing so far at the Giro and speculate what we might see in this last week of racing.  The Giro is known for being a pretty chaotic race, and the 2025 edition is no different. So far, we've seen some amazing stages, and the GC storyline has been incredible, too. From guys like Luke Plapp - the Plappinator - finally getting his hands in the air in Europe, Wout van Aert completing a monster comeback on the Strade Bianche gravel stage in dominant fashion, and unsung hero Daan Hoole taking some massive scalps in the stage 10 time trial. UAE are gripping the pink jersey pretty tightly, but guys like Simon Yates, Richard Carapaz, and our old mate Derek Gee are creeping up behind him, not to mention his own teammate Juan Ayuso waiting in the wings. Sadly for Shane, his Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team are having some pretty rotten luck. First, they lost Jai Hindley - a former Giro winner - in the first week to a crash on the wet, slippery roads of Naples. Then, Dani Martinez, last year's runner-up, slipped out of the GC and hasn't looked like his former self so far. Of course, they went into the race with the defending champion Primoz Roglič, whose GC bid looks to be over after a brutal day of racing over the Monte Grappa. It's not all doom and gloom for Bora, though; young Italian super domestique Giulio Pellizzari has shown a hell of a lot of promise so far, and no doubt has a bright career ahead of him. In this week's PeloChat, Durbo shines the spotlight on XDS Astana and their ongoing hunt for UCI points to avoid being relegated at the end of the season. A change in tactics from the Kazakh team means they're no longer racing for the win, which sounds absolutely crazy for a pro cycling team. Instead, they're trying to stack the top 10 with riders to scrape together as many UCI points as they can. They've managed to claw themselves back up the team rankings and away from the relegation zone, putting other teams at risk and giving us fans a whole other narrative to follow this season. Finally, we have a Giro-themed CommuniQuiz. I'm Quiz Master this week, and I'll be testing Shane and Durbo's knowledge on all things Giro d'Italia. Which former ‘Junior World Champion' used to sell cleaning products, didn't turn pro until 26, and then went and won the Giro?! Harry and Stu might come from opposite ends of the UK and sport very different hairstyles, but there's one thing they share a passion for: The Old Lady. Not just any old lady – I'm talking about the fourth monument of the season, Liège–Bastogne–Liège. It's the oldest of all the monuments, and marks the end of the Classics season – and that's what this month's episode of Race Radio is all about: the Ardennes classics.  The boys are back with another banger of an episode to get you all hyped up for the Ardennes. These races are usually a bit forgotten about, lost in the shadow of Flanders and Roubaix. After months of uncertainty, British Cycling have the money, the title partner and the race director: now they also have the races. Incredibly, the Tours of Britain have been saved, thanks to a five-year sponsorship deal with Lloyds Bank that is believed to be in the region of £20 million. We hear from British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton as he tells the media about the "landmark deal" that will see Lloyds Bank immediately become the title partner of the Tour of Britain events, as well as what BC are calling its "major events vision". We also reveal that former organisers Sweetspot were close to securing a deal of their own with Lloyds last year before they were forced into liquidation. On the back of this thrilling news for British cycling as a whole, we also look ahead to three days of great racing at the Ride London Classique. It's full gas racing season in Europe, so I've been really looking forward to catching up with Luke & Tom for what I knew would be a pretty action-packed Race Communiqué! The boys have been on very different schedules; Luke has been with Jayco-Alula at Paris-Nice and then on to the cobbled classics, which he dialled in from this week. Meanwhile, Tom is on the Ardennes program with EF Education - Easypost (obviously avoiding having to drive his car over cobbles) in stage races in Spain and Italy.    For my part, I've been loving spectating and seeing the races that used to make up such a big part of my season from the comfort of my armchair at home. It's a different view from the outside, so it was great to catch up with these two and get the inside line on what is happening in the pelo at the moment. As usual, I take us through the races from the past month and get some insight on how things went down on the road, and what we all think that means for the big races that are coming up. Luke has some fascinating insight into race nutrition plans, and how riders are currently working to fuel in races whilst also keeping track of their race weight. I found this section fascinating, as it is eye-opening how much the sport has moved on in the short space of time since I retired. In Tom's segment, we go behind some of the more impressive tactical moves that he's noted down this spring, and there is even time for a gripe about UCI fines! It wouldn't be the Race Communiqué without our famous quiz and this month it was Tom's turn to be quiz master, pitting Luke and I against each other in a Classics death match quiz – with a cricketing twist! Chronicles is a new podcast that I'm excited to be bringing as exclusive member content for 2024. This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo.  For this series, I've got together with my good friend and former team (and room) mate Svein Tuft. As a few of you will know, ‘Sveino' is a fascinating guy, with a unique perspective on pretty much any subject out there.  Both Svein and I love to dive into new topics – take them apart and discuss ideas, theories, and trends from every possible angle. Back in our racing days, we would spend hours - in the saddle or hotel rooms, chewing over ideas, challenging each other, and looking at ways to learn and develop our understanding of the sport.  This is what we wanted to recreate with Chronicles. It's a chance for us to get together and get stuck into the topics that interest us in and around pro cycling. We'll be listening to people's stories, asking questions, doing the research, and gathering the information that allows us and you to get to grips with these key parts of the sport and the wider culture of pro cycling.  First up, this month we started with a question that we have both been looking for the answer to: how do you turn professional?  This was something that jumped out at us when we thought: why us? How did we make it, and not others? What did we do so differently or well? Or was it just luck?  To unpack this subject, we wanted to get as many angles of the conversation as possible, and we have a whole host of people with a range of opinions and expertise.  We kick things off with a man who wrote the book, ‘How to Become a Pro Cyclist', Jack Burke and asked the question, if turning pro really is something that you can engineer, or if it's too random even for people who ‘get' how the system works?  Svein spoke to a key figure in the US racing scene Jonas Carney, the former manager of Human Powered Health, to discuss what a team looks for when selecting riders, whilst I spoke to my old boss Matt White of Jayco Alula about how teams work with agents to find new talent.  Sticking inside the teams, we also caught up with Sebastian Langeveld from EF Education Easypost who oversees scouting riders for EF and asked him if it was all numbers and data these days or if there is such a thing as the X factor.  We also spoke to two current riders, James Whelan of Q36.5 and Riley Sheehan of Israel Premier Tech, who gave us opposing stories of what happens when you get to the World Tour too easily and how hard it can be to have to battle through the ranks.  Just as we hoped there was so much great stuff that we could get stuck into here, turning pro and how you do it is a massive topic that certainly doesn't have a simple answer. We discuss our thoughts on the way that the top riders tackle the off-season these days (or don't!). He also has some cracking tales from his legendary local bunchie - which I'll leave for you to enjoy.  I've been on the ground at the Tour Down Under of course, and I'll bring you up to speed with the latest racing news, as well as a few of the things that grabbed my attention at the first World Tour race of the season. It's also been a busy period for Tom, who was DS-ing the early season Australian races. He takes us a bit deeper into the world of the DS and talks about some of the tactical detail of the recent races, as well as getting our thoughts on the why recently retired riders do so well in the team car.  It was really great to get things going again making this pod. We all love the racing, whether we are doing it ourselves, talking about it, or even just watching and reading about it. Getting back together and getting into talking about the races was really exciting after the short break. Let's hope it's the start of a big year to come. I'm back with something brand new for you this week, the first of a new monthly series called The Race Communique.   The idea is to get back to our roots, since LITP has moved on from the pro peloton with me, I wanted to get back amongst the action and back to chatting about the World Tour.
