Harry and Stu might come from opposite ends of the UK and sport very different hairstyles, but there's one thing they share a passion for: The Old Lady. Not just any old lady – I'm talking about the fourth monument of the season, Liège–Bastogne–Liège. It's the oldest of all the monuments, and marks the end of the Classics season – and that's what this month's episode of Race Radio is all about: the Ardennes classics. The boys are back with another banger of an episode to get you all hyped up for the Ardennes. These races are usually a bit forgotten about, lost in the shadow of Flanders and Roubaix. But, as always, Harry and Stu's fan's-eye perspective is oozing with enthusiasm that'll get you pumped for these races. Harry's back from the roadside of Flanders and Roubaix, and Stu's gearing up to get himself out to Belgium for Liège. That's what I love about these boys – they're diehard fans that get out on the roadside and soak in the atmosphere at the races, and their passion is absolutely infectious. Here's what Harry had to say about this month's episode of Life In The Peloton's Race Radio: ‘This episode of LITP's Race Radio is all about the Ardennes and it's somewhat of an EF Education-Easypost special, with not one but two guests from the team on the show! First up is punchy young Irish climber Archie Ryan, swiftly followed by the team's not-so-young and punchy DS (and LITP Communiqué regular) Tom Southam. The two tell us what makes these hilly races great, Tom remembers witnessing a live mugging during a recon ride in Liège while Archie dreams of a Ben & Jerry's helmet sponsorship. Enjoy!' My experience with the Ardennes as a rider is limited; in fact, of all the races, I only started Amstel Gold Race once – I was always more of a cobbles man. But, after listening to the boys yarn about these races, I am gee'd up for the Ardennes! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I do. Cheers, Mitch
Randy & Dean Warren get together to talk about bicycle racing on the professional level as well as their own bicycle riding exploits. The Warren brothers look back on the recent big Belgian classic races culminating in the Tour of Flanders race, perhaps the toughest monument race on the calendar. US riders have had success in the junior ranks as well as EF-Education - EasyPost's Neilson Powless big win at the Dwars door Vlaanderen Race. Paris-Roubaix comes up next week the big attraction of World Champion Tadej Pogačar's participation.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP This episode is supported by our friends at The Escape Collective A little later than usual, but we are back this week with a hot-off-the-press Race Communiqué. The Tour de France is the only race on the calendar where, myself and my two regular podcast guests, Luke Durbridge and Tom Southam are all on the ground at the same time. After a month on the road doing our respective jobs at the race, we sat down and caught up on all of the action and shared our perspectives on the race. While I was hitting the road every day with the press and sometimes doubling up doing the odd bidon hand up, Luke was guiding his team sprinter Dylan Groenewegen to his 6th TDF stage win for Jayco Alula, and Tom was behind the wheel of the team car helping Richard Carapaz and EF Education Easypost light up the race in the mountains in the final week. It was an eventful race for all of us, and we wanted to catch up about the things that had stuck in our minds, from the great tactics, to the mood and the dynamics in the grupetto plus of course, plenty of insight on the things that you wouldn't have seen on TV or read about in the press. This pod is always a fun one to make, but this one is packed with great stories, not to mention revealing our strategies for the Escape Collective Fantasy Tour, and of course, no Race Communiqué would be complete without a quiz. Time to grab a cold one, and finally relax after an action packed month. Cheers! Mitch

After months of uncertainty, British Cycling have the money, the title partner and the race director: now they also have the races. Incredibly, the Tours of Britain have been saved, thanks to a five-year sponsorship deal with Lloyds Bank that is believed to be in the region of £20 million. We hear from British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton as he tells the media about the "landmark deal" that will see Lloyds Bank immediately become the title partner of the Tour of Britain events, as well as what BC are calling its "major events vision". We also reveal that former organisers Sweetspot were close to securing a deal of their own with Lloyds last year before they were forced into liquidation. On the back of this thrilling news for British cycling as a whole, we also look ahead to three days of great racing at the Ride London Classique. The event has attracted many of the biggest names in the women's peloton including Lotte Kopecky, Lorena Wiebes and Lizzi Deignan, as well as Zoe Bäckstedt, who's fresh from her second place in the Antwerp Port Epic. In an exclusive interview, the 19-year-old Canyon-SRAM rider reflects on her highlights of the season so far, the excitement she feels at the prospect of racing in front of home fans at Ride London, and the possibility of selection for this summer's Paris Olympics. Sam Bennett is another rider hoping that he gets the chance to shine in France this summer, in his case at the Tour de France, which he's not appeared in since winning the green jersey in 2020. Buoyed by five victories at last week's Four Days of Dunkirk, the Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale sprinter looks back on that success, reveals the race he's chosen as prep for the Tour, and talks up his chances of being selected for his currently all-conquering French team. In our "How to Make Cycling Better" feature, we hear from EF Education-EasyPost team manager Charly Wegelius, who outlines a way in which he believes racing could not only be safer for the riders, but also attract bigger audiences. After being at the forefront of British success for two decades, masterminding the development of superstars such as Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins and Tom Pidcock, Rod Ellingworth has left WorldTour to oversee the reboot of the women's and men's Tour of Britain. In an exclusive interview trackside at Manchester velodrome, Ellingworth reveals why he left Ineos Grenadiers, how he has a bold vision to grow British Cycling's national tours — and whether he'll be giving Dave Brailsford advice on who to bring off the bench at Old Trafford… Sandwiched between the pavé and the Giro d'Italia are the Ardennes Classics, hilly one-day races in the elevated lands of the Netherlands and Belgium, the setting this coming weekend for a heavyweight clash between Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel. In our preview of the weekend's major racing action, Ardennes Classics veteran Dan Martin, winner of Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2013, tells us what makes these races so special and about the qualities required to win them. We also hear from Bahrain-Victorious's Pello Bilbao on how you go about beating Tadej Pogačar. While Van der Poel and Pogačar have been hogging the victories and the headlines at the very top of the sport, it's also become increasingly difficult to ignore the feats of 21-year-old Briton Joe Blackmore. Winner of the Tours of Rwanda and Taiwan, 4th against the big guns at Flèche Brabonçonne, and victorious again at the under-23 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Blackmore has just signed a 2-year contract with Israel-PremierTech. In our profile of this hugely exciting talent, we hear from Joe Blackmore himself, who tells us what kind of rider he sees himself as and about his motivations as a racer. In our regular feature on "Ways to Make Cycling Better", former pro and now EF Education-EasyPost team director Tejay van Garderen tells us why he'd like to see names and numbers on riders' jerseys. It's full gas racing season in Europe, so I've been really looking forward to catching up with Luke & Tom for what I knew would be a pretty action-packed Race Communiqué! The boys have been on very different schedules; Luke has been with Jayco-Alula at Paris-Nice and then on to the cobbled classics, which he dialled in from this week. Meanwhile, Tom is on the Ardennes program with EF Education - Easypost (obviously avoiding having to drive his car over cobbles) in stage races in Spain and Italy. For my part, I've been loving spectating and seeing the races that used to make up such a big part of my season from the comfort of my armchair at home. It's a different view from the outside, so it was great to catch up with these two and get the inside line on what is happening in the pelo at the moment. As usual, I take us through the races from the past month and get some insight on how things went down on the road, and what we all think that means for the big races that are coming up. Luke has some fascinating insight into race nutrition plans, and how riders are currently working to fuel in races whilst also keeping track of their race weight. I found this section fascinating, as it is eye-opening how much the sport has moved on in the short space of time since I retired. In Tom's segment, we go behind some of the more impressive tactical moves that he's noted down this spring, and there is even time for a gripe about UCI fines! It wouldn't be the Race Communiqué without our famous quiz and this month it was Tom's turn to be quiz master, pitting Luke and I against each other in a Classics death match quiz – with a cricketing twist! This was a real blast to make and I'm sure you guys are gonna enjoy it too! Cheers, Mitch

Chronicles is a new podcast that I'm excited to be bringing as exclusive member content for 2024. This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo. For this series, I've got together with my good friend and former team (and room) mate Svein Tuft. As a few of you will know, ‘Sveino' is a fascinating guy, with a unique perspective on pretty much any subject out there. Both Svein and I love to dive into new topics – take them apart and discuss ideas, theories, and trends from every possible angle. Back in our racing days, we would spend hours - in the saddle or hotel rooms, chewing over ideas, challenging each other, and looking at ways to learn and develop our understanding of the sport. This is what we wanted to recreate with Chronicles. It's a chance for us to get together and get stuck into the topics that interest us in and around pro cycling. We'll be listening to people's stories, asking questions, doing the research, and gathering the information that allows us and you to get to grips with these key parts of the sport and the wider culture of pro cycling. First up, this month we started with a question that we have both been looking for the answer to: how do you turn professional? This was something that jumped out at us when we thought: why us? How did we make it, and not others? What did we do so differently or well? Or was it just luck? To unpack this subject, we wanted to get as many angles of the conversation as possible, and we have a whole host of people with a range of opinions and expertise. We kick things off with a man who wrote the book, ‘How to Become a Pro Cyclist', Jack Burke and asked the question, if turning pro really is something that you can engineer, or if it's too random even for people who ‘get' how the system works? Svein spoke to a key figure in the US racing scene Jonas Carney, the former manager of Human Powered Health, to discuss what a team looks for when selecting riders, whilst I spoke to my old boss Matt White of Jayco Alula about how teams work with agents to find new talent. Sticking inside the teams, we also caught up with Sebastian Langeveld from EF Education Easypost who oversees scouting riders for EF and asked him if it was all numbers and data these days or if there is such a thing as the X factor. We also spoke to two current riders, James Whelan of Q36.5 and Riley Sheehan of Israel Premier Tech, who gave us opposing stories of what happens when you get to the World Tour too easily and how hard it can be to have to battle through the ranks. Just as we hoped there was so much great stuff that we could get stuck into here, turning pro and how you do it is a massive topic that certainly doesn't have a simple answer. And as always with Svein, the fun part was exploring the subject! Have a listen as we do our best to understand all about it. Cheers! Mitch
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Welcome to the first Communiqué for the 2024 season! First off, I'm delighted to say that my good mates Luke Durbridge and Tom Southam are back with me for another year. If you haven't heard it yet, the Communiqué is our pro racing specific podcast, and I couldn't think of a couple of better guys to have on board to get some great insight into the races. As well as being good friends of mine these two have years of experience in pro cycling with Luke currently racing for Jayco Alula and Tom who is a DS at EF Education Easypost. All through the racing season we will be diving inside the pelo with Luke, hearing the view from the team cars from Tom and, of course, I'll be providing my own armchair style take on the racing! For this first episode we've got an early season theme. After a good few weeks at home Luke is well settled in Perth, getting ready to start racing without having done any racing back in Australia – something he's – amazingly – never actually tried before! He reflects on the difference between starting early at races like TDU or kicking off in the more traditional European style. We discuss our thoughts on the way that the top riders tackle the off-season these days (or don't!). He also has some cracking tales from his legendary local bunchie - which I'll leave for you to enjoy. I've been on the ground at the Tour Down Under of course, and I'll bring you up to speed with the latest racing news, as well as a few of the things that grabbed my attention at the first World Tour race of the season. It's also been a busy period for Tom, who was DS-ing the early season Australian races. He takes us a bit deeper into the world of the DS and talks about some of the tactical detail of the recent races, as well as getting our thoughts on the why recently retired riders do so well in the team car. It was really great to get things going again making this pod. We all love the racing, whether we are doing it ourselves, talking about it, or even just watching and reading about it. Getting back together and getting into talking about the races was really exciting after the short break. Let's hope it's the start of a big year to come. Sit back, relax and have a listen to The Communiqué. Cheers! Mitch

EF had an interesting 2023 season with a bit of disappointment at the Tour de France as the new signing Richard Carapaz crashed on stage 1. Still, Neilson Powless had a good start to the season and Ben Healy was stellar in the Ardennes as well as winning a Giro d'italia stage win. Plenty of new signings and could be a team to look out for in 2024.
Lukas Nerurkar is one of a handful of young British riders who will graduate to the UCI WorldTour in 2024. The Brighton teenager is the son of the British Olympian Richard Nerurkar and spent the first seven years of his life in Ethiopia. Mount Entoto hosted his formative cycling experiences. In June, Lukas won a stage of the Baby Giro, a prestigious U23 race featuring some of the mountain passes used by the Giro d'Italia. He also won the white jersey competition at the professional Gran Camino race, an event won by two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). Trinity Racing has aided Lukas' path to the top as an under-23. The British-registered UCI Continental team offers its riders an early immersion into the lifestyle of a professional cyclist. Lukas shares a house in Girona with Trinity graduate and soon-to-be team-mate at EF Education-EasyPost, Ben Healey, the Irish champion. In a revealing interview, Lukas describes his childhood in Ethiopia, growing up in a household accustomed to elite sporting success, his journey into cycling via the Preston Park club and VC Londres, and his decision to pursue a pathway to the top from overseas, rather than from the UK's struggling domestic scene. He offers insights into the value of a cycling education delivered by former British champions Pete Kennaugh and Ian Stannard, explains how he bounced back to win at the Baby Giro a day after his race derailed on the mighty Stelvio Pass, and discusses his continued evolution as a rider. Timothy John, co-host of the Brother UK Cycling Podcast and the former editor of RoadCyclingUK.com and Rouleur.cc, leads an engaging conversation with Nerukrar, a talented and engaging young rider on the cusp of a bright future in road cycling's top tier.
A RadioCycling special report reveals how Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) may be part of the proposed new league that promises to revolutionise and change cycling forever.PIF, who have invested heavily in football, golf, boxing and F1, have held discussions with the major stakeholders of the mooted league.RadioCycling has been informed that the league has been in the works for the past three years, and that five major teams are involved. The league is the brainchild of Jumbo-Visma's general manager Richard Plugge, who is also the man behind One Cycling, a new entity that aims to make cycling sustainable. The UCI, cycling's governing body, are on board; ASO, the Tour de France owners, have also had meetings. In a special RadioCycling episode, we hear exclusively from Plugge, from EF Education-EasyPost's manager Jonathan Vaughters, and explain more about the proposed league, its format and planned launch date.We also reveal details of an explosive letter that has been sent to Plugge from other WorldTour teams, expressing their deep mistrust of him, and their unhappiness. As it stands, many teams are opposed to the new league and One Cycling. This podcast is brought to you with the support of our sponsor, Saddle Skedaddle. Support the show
From wise heads to rising stars, this episode of the Brother UK Cycling Podcast includes reflections from inside British Cycling's domestic road racing Task Force and insights from Lukas Nerurkar, the 19-year-old from Brighton who next year will race in the UCI WorldTour with EF Education-EasyPost. With a flurry of big name moves in the transfer market and 10 days remaining until a cast of the peloton's stars gather at the Vuelta a España, these are RadioCycling's latest headline stories...Following the announcement a four-year ban for former Team Sky and British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman for possession of a banned substance and lying to UK Anti-Doping investigators, we speak to Matt Lawton, chief sports correspondent of the Times, who has followed the case closely since 2016. We hear what impact this decision will have on Team Sky's legacy, whether Freeman is the "fall guy" in this affair, and if the identity of the rider for whom the batch of testosterone at the centre of this case was destined will ever be revealed. One of the buzz phrases in Scotland at the World Championships was "Tour de France". Another was “When is it coming back?” The British government is behind a bid to host the Tour's Grand Départ for the third time, the money is in place to support this, and now leading actors on both sides of the bid are openly talking it. Is it a done deal? If it is, when might it happen? And could we have the answers to these questions on 25th October? A surprise debutant at the Tour de France, EF Education-EasyPost's James Shaw impressed hugely during the first half of the race, but had to abandon at the end of the second week after a heavy crash left him with severe concussion. The British rider tells us how the concussion protocols worked in his favour, about his return to fitness and reveals that two months on he's still affected by the impact he suffered that day.Support the show

I'm back with something brand new for you this week, the first of a new monthly series called The Race Communique. The idea is to get back to our roots, since LITP has moved on from the pro peloton with me, I wanted to get back amongst the action and back to chatting about the World Tour. We'll be unpacking the trends, the race results, all the news and happenings in the pro peloton – to try to get the lowdown for you, the listener. Joining me on the pod each month will be one of two guys who need no introduction to this podcast – my friends Tom Southam, DS at EF Education-EasyPost, and Jayco-Alula's Luke Durbridge. We'll chat race results and analytics, in true LITP style – taking a deep dive into what life is like as a pro, and notable things that have happened at races, from the varied angles of DS, rider, and me – the guy on the outside of the peloton trying to get a glimpse back in to see what's up and how things have changed. For episode one, we're talking all things Tour de France, unpacking the amazing Tour that we just witnessed, and looking ahead to the Worlds and other upcoming races. Hang in there for a cheeky quiz at the end, and most of all enjoy the listen to the first Race Communique! Cheers, Mitch

RadioCycling will be offering three episodes a week during the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Our first Tour-themed show, backed by our new sponsor Saddle Skedaddle, offers a blitz of the latest news going into the world's greatest race.We start with the latest on transfer dealings at Ineos Grenadiers, where there's a lot of outward traffic but very little movement in the other direction. With Tao Geoghegan-Hart, Ben Tulett, Pavel Sivakov, Carlos Rodríguez and now Dani Martínez all heavily linked with moves away from the British super squad, we examine the Ineos transfer strategy. Is there a big signing in the offing?EF Education-EasyPost have named what's arguably their strongest ever line-up for the Tour. Team boss Jonathan Vaughters tells us about their strategy going into the race, why he's expecting team leader Richard Carapaz to come good over the next three weeks, and also offers some suggestions on how to improve rider safety in the wake of Gino Mäder's tragic death at the Tour of Switzerland.Fears that Tadej Pogačar might be forced to sit out the Tour after breaking a wrist in April have been allayed and the two-time champion is fit and raring to go. UAE Team Emirates head coach Iñigo San Millán has played a vital role in Pogačar's return to peak fitness and tells us about Pogačar's training regime during this period and also the UAE leader's love of a chocolate mousse. Most of the pre-Tour talk has, inevitably, been about the GC battle, but what's in store for the clash of the sprinting titans? We turned to Marcel Kittel for an expert's analysis of this contest. Winner of 14 Tour stages, Kittel also reveals why Mark Cavendish was always his biggest rival and who he expects to emerge as this year's Tourminator of the bunch sprints.Last weekend fan favourite Fred Wright took a highly emotional first professional win in the British road championship. The Londoner lifts the lid on what he expects to be an action-packed race for his Bahrain Victorious team, which will be aiming to contend on all fronts.Support the show
Lachlan Morton is a professional cyclist and mountain biker from Australia, currently riding for UCI WorldTeam EF Education–EasyPost. He's notched podium finishes at the Leadville 100, rode the Fastest Known Time for Kokopelli's Trail in 2020, and set the Everesting cycling world record in 2020. He also completed the Alt Tour in 2021, cycling the entire Tour de France route unsupported, beating the peloton by five days. In this interview we ask: Congrats on your podium finish at Unbound earlier this month. Were you thinking there might be such a close finish from the beginning of the race? How did you get into cycling competition initially? Has your motivation for racing changed? What did you learn while riding and filming Thereabouts in 2014? We've heard that you're hoping to make a run at the record for circumnavigating the world by bike. Is an attempt still on your radar? Have you mapped out a potential route? How long do you think it would take? Is it risky to publicize an FKT attempt before you make it? It seems like a lot of your adventures are tied to fundraising for various non-profits. Which causes are near and dear to your heart? Are you someone who learns by reading books and listening to others, or are you more of an experiential learner? How is EF a good sponsorship fit for you? In Thereabouts you mention riding a frankenbike as a kid that didn't have brakes. What did that teach you about riding? About life? Is there a pressure on professional athletes to have a strong social media presence today? How does that compare to 5-10 years ago? How can the sport support pro athletes better, and how can athletes better support the sport? In the video of your Kokopelli FKT run you look super calm and collected. Is that an accurate reflection of how you were feeling? Do you think you could have done it faster? What do you want your legacy to be? Another stage for the breakaway and it was Ben Healy of EF Education Easypost who was the strongest and managed to solo to the finish by 50km while in the favourites group it was Primoz Roglic who put in the decisive attack that opened gaps in the general classification while Remco Evenepoel struggled to follow.

This week Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back and joined by one of the most illustrious and recognisable voices in Belgian cycling, Sporza's veteran commentator and reporter Renaat Schotte. After the usual news round-up, we review the action from the cyclocross Worlds in Hoogerheide, where Fem Van Empel and Mathieu van der Poel went double Dutch by taking the women's and men's titles respectively. Defeat for Wout van Aert meant disappointment for Belgium, although spirits there will have been buoyed by the latest evidence of Arnaud De Lie's prodigious talent at the Étoile de Bessèges. With Renaat's help, we find out more about a rider who is already being hailed as a Tom Boonen-Philippe Gilbert hybrid. Neilson Powless took overall victory at Bessèges - and the American would be most people's choice as the rider of the early season. We hear from the EF Education-Easypost man about his early-season success, why he'll try his hand at the cobbled Classics and why his Native American ancestry is so important to him, especially when things are going well on the bike. Despite being chained together around the neck, a small group of young protesters were dragged off the race route by tour officials. At around 36 kilometres from the finish, on a section of straight road, the protesters sat on the course and set off red flares. The stage breakaway and peloton were both halted until the road was cleared. Climate activists from the Derniere Renovation movement said: “Since the government doesn't care about the climate crisis, we need to come and take over the Tour de France to refocus attention on what matters for our survival. We need to make our government react as they lead us to the slaughterhouse. “Non-violent disruption is our last chance to be heard and avoid the worst consequences of global warming,” the group said. The Tour de France organisers, ASO, declined to comment on the protest. Commentating on the scene on an in-race motorbike, Sir Bradley Wiggins told Eurosport viewers: “It really was going off. It was quite crazy. A lot of people getting quite angry, some of the directeur sportifs got out the cars, stuck a boot in.” The Derniere Renovation group was responsible for an interruption at the French Open tennis, when a protester jumped on to the court and tied herself to the net, wearing a T-shirt saying: “We have 1,028 days left”. In the Tour protest, they were seen wearing T-shirts stating: “We have 989 days left”. The Tour has long been the target of protests but this took place against the backdrop of the race organisers pledging their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. This year's “road book”, the manual given to all those working on the race, states that the Tour is “resolutely committed to being an increasingly eco-responsible organisation.” In 2020, during the pandemic Tour, the race was criticised by recently elected “green” mayors in some of France's major cities. The mayor of Lyon, Gregory Doucet, described the Tour as “macho and polluting” and lacking an environmental conscience, and there have been multiple calls for the race to further reduce its carbon footprint. The final outcome of the race itself was put into doubt when the race leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Emirates team were hit by two Covid‑19 positive tests, just 48 hours after all riders in the peloton were tested and declared free of the virus. George Bennett, one of the defending champion's key mountain support riders, and teammate Rafal Majka, both tested positive on Tuesday morning in Morzine. Bennett withdrew from the race while Majka was allowed to continue racing on the grounds that he was asymptomatic. On Saturday another of Pogacar's team, Vegard Stake Laengen, also tested positive and withdrew. The eight-man team with which Pogacar started in Copenhagen is now reduced to six, with Majka's continuation uncertain. “As per our internal protocols, Majka was tested for Covid-19 and returned a positive result this morning,” the UAE Emirates team said in a statement. “He is asymptomatic and analysing his PCR, [we] found he had a very low risk of infectiousness, similar to the case of Bob Jungels [the AG2R Citroen rider who tested positive in Copenhagen] earlier in the race.” The Australian rider Luke Durbridge (Team BikeExchange) also tested positive and was withdrawn from the race. ASO moved to restrict media access to the team buses, or the paddock, saying that “only representatives of the UCI (jury, commissaires, anti-doping), the teams' staff and the organisation's personnel supervising the teams will have access to the paddock”. Access to the finish lines, for the media, remains unchanged. Magnus Cort Nielsen of the EF Education-EasyPost team won the stage in a photo finish from Nicholas Schultz, a teammate to the absent Durbridge. Lennard Kämna, of Bora Hansgrohe, one of the day's breakaways, moved to within 11 seconds of the race leader Pogacar but is expected to drop back in the next 48 hours, which includes summit finishes at Alpe d'Huez and the Col du Granon. Van Aert gives Tour de France green jersey to fan who lent him a pump Stage 11 of the Tour de France was a big day for Jumbo-Visma, who claimed the race lead with Jonas Vingegaard, but the day was even bigger for one lucky spectator on the roadside of the Col du Granon. Wout van Aert was coming back down the Col du Granon from the finish of stage 11 of the Tour de France after the podium ceremony for the points classification - which he leads by a huge margin - and had a slow leak in his tyre and no Jumbo-Visma mechanic in sight. The Belgian stopped during the descent to his team bus and some cyclists quickly offered up a frame pump so Van Aert could add some air to his tubeless tyre. In thanks, Van Aert gave one cyclist the green jersey off his back - literally telling him to unzip the back of the podium version of the green jersey and have it as a souvenir. The moment was captured by Italian journalist and cyclist Michele Pelacci who is riding in the Alps with his brother and watching the Tour from the roadside. He works for a number of Italian media including the Alvento magazine and the official Giro d'Italia podcast called GIROglifici. He admitted he wasn't quick enough to get Van Aert's green jersey but captured the moment and shared photographs on Twitter. “My brother punctured and we stopped at the side of the road to change the inner tube. Guess who stopped after five minutes? Wout van Aert," Pelacci wrote on Twitter. "I said: Hey Wout, there's liquid coming out of your wheel. He looked at me stupidly and explained it was tubeless. He asked for a pump and an English guy offered him one. Wout told him: ‘You're a hero' and said: ‘I've got something for you, take the green jersey off my back, it's yours'. “What did I learn from it all? Be the first to pass a pump to Wout van Aert because in exchange he could give you a special souvenir.” Pro cycling is unique in how close fans can get to the riders and spectators clamour for discarded bidons. But to receive such a valuable keepsake is hors-categorie. 'A brilliant day' Van der Poel and Van Aert attacking during stage 11 of the Tour de France Van der Poel and Van Aert attacking during stage 11 of the Tour de France (Image credit: Getty Images) Van Aert was likely in a generous mood because of his team's success on the day. He attacked from kilometre zero, drawing out a breakaway and, after snatching some more points in the intermediate sprint, came back to help the team in its assault on race leader Tadej Pogačar. Van Aert pulled Primož Roglič back to the yellow jersey group after the Slovenian had put in several stinging attacks, coming up and past the group like a high-speed train. On the final climb, Vingegaard hardly needed his teammates as he leapt away with 4.5km to go to win the stage and snatch the race lead. "It was a really big day, we prepared for this day - you could see we were all ready to give it a go and attack the yellow jersey," Van Aert said after the podium ceremony. "It was not easy, I was in front ready to help Jonas and Primož toward the Granon, but apparently Tadej Pogačar could chase down the guys all the time. So at that moment, I thought it was going to be hard to do something. But I think because Laporte and I at the beginning of the stage we made him suffer already early on. That's why Jonas could break away on the final climb." Van Aert's breakaway started with a familiar friend - fellow cyclocross racer Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) set aside their rivalry to help pull the breakaway clear only to be dropped on the first climb, the Lacets de Montvernier. "The plan was to be in the breakaway and be the rider out front. That Mathieu was on my wheel was a nice surprise, it will be really cool pictures. We did a really fast first 30k, I really enjoyed it. "Again I could take the points in the intermediate sprint, so a perfect day but especially for GC this was a brilliant day." For the fan who received his green jersey, it was undoubtedly an even more brilliant day. What's New in the 303: Boulder Peak Sunday The Boulder Peak Triathlon was last Sunday. In the latest episode of the road.cc Podcast sponsored by Laka, we're winding down after our trip to the Criterium du Dauphine. Live from the departure lounge (please excuse a rather enthusiastic French airport announcer who pops up occasionally) Liam, Mat and Andrew talk about what it's like to head out to a World Tour race: watching it, hassling pro team PR people to get pics of unreleased bikes and more comedy mispronunciation of Toms Skujiņš all feature prominently! Liam and Dan also catch up with Hugh Carthy, the EF Education–EasyPost rider from Preston who loves to dig deep. Hugh reveals himself to be quite the bike nerd, telling us about his favourite vintage bikes back home and equipment preferences for big races. A questão das subidas e descidas no World Tour voltou novamente à mesa, numa altura em que Lotto-Soudal, Israel Premier Tech, EF Education - EasyPost e BikeExchange estão na cauda da tabela de luta por um lugar no World Tour no próximo triénio. Outra notícia da semana é a de retirdada de Tom Dumoulin. O neerlandês engrossa a lista dos corredores que vão pendurar a bicicleta no final da temporada, num grupo que terá também Nibali, Valverde ou Pozzovivo.

Endurance News: Oceanside 70.3 Pro Results Jackson Laundry Surprises and Taylor Knibb Dominates in Oceanside It's always hard to know what to expect at the first long-course race of the North American season—and Ironman 70.3 Oceanside in southern California delivered even more drama than usual this year, with a few breakout performances and a sprint finish. The drama was all in the men's race—where the unheralded Jackson Laundry took the lead with less than a mile to go and charged hard for a win that looked like a shock even to him. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “It doesn't really sink in until you're right there and there's no one left to catch you.” And then behind Laundry, Lionel Sanders and Rudy von Berg sprinted to the line in one of the closest finishes we've ever seen at long-course. Until that final mile it actually looked like an event that would be locked up by double gold medalist Alistair Brownlee. Out of a large (very large) group on the swim, a bike pack slowly whittled down until at T2 it was Brownlee, Laundry, von Berg, and Ben Kanute. The pace on the run was blistering—and behind them, after losing his nutrition on the bike, Sanders was running even faster. Ultimately, it became a race of seconds. Laundry and von Berg raced neck and neck, until the Canadian put in a surge for what seemed to be a lock on second. But he didn't stop, he kept going faster and faster—catching Brownlee and putting down a sub-5:00 mile at the end of the 13.1. Behind him, Sanders had caught the suddenly struggling Brownlee and then reached von Berg with just hundreds of meters to go. They sprinted; Sanders outleaned. It was a 1:10:11 run for Laundry v. a 1:10:55 run for von Berg and a 1:08:29 run for Sanders to come to the line shoulder-to-shoulder and collapse. In fourth, Brownlee slowed and came home with “just” a 1:11:04 run. That's how close the day was. In the women's race, it was maybe less about the drama and more about a coronation. The 24-year-old Knibb controlled the swim, according to her competitors, clocking the fastest of the day (23:33 in choppy conditions); she got to the front of the bike after a slower transition to put on socks and then had the fastest bike of the day too (2:20:17); and then took out of T2 nearly three minutes in the lead and had only the 4th fastest run of the day (1:17:48) to win handily. Filming will run from March to July 2022 for a release on Netflix in the first semester of 2023. In addition, France Télévisions will broadcast a documentary a few days before the start of the Tour de France 2023. Dolores Emile, Manager, EMEA Unscripted & Doc Series (France) at Netflix, said “We are very proud to unveil new aspects of the emblematic Tour de France. This is a unique opportunity to dive into the stories of its inspiring characters.” Yann Le Moënner, Managing Director of A.S.O., added “We are proud of this partnership with Netflix, France Télévisions and the Tour de France teams, which will offer fans a unique immersion behind the scenes. “Through a narrative approach, which is additive to the competition itself, the public will be able to discover how the Tour de France represents the ultimate challenge for the competitors ; in particular in terms of suffering, pushing their limits and team spirit. This project is part of our overall ambition to make our sport more accessible and meet an even wider audience.” Laurent-Eric Le Lay, Sports Director at France Télévisions, said “As the historic partner and broadcaster of the Tour de France, we are delighted to participate in this project which will allow everyone to experience part of the daily life of champions and teams. “It is additive to what we do every year during the race and we believe that it will attract an even larger audience to this beautiful event.” What's New in the 303: USA Triathlon Announces 2022 Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series Calendar COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced its 2022 Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series, featuring more than 45 swim-run events in cities across the United States this season. At all Splash & Dash events, participants ages 7-10 will complete a 100-meter pool swim and an approximate 1-kilometer run, while athletes ages 11-15 will complete a 200m pool swim and an approximate 2k run. All participants will receive a unique, custom finishers' medal and giveaways. The Splash & Dash Series is a part of USA Triathlon's emphasis on increasing opportunities and access to multisport events and clinics for current and prospective youth multisport athletes. As part of its 2022 Return to Racing Youth Stimulus Package, USA Triathlon is offering free youth event sanctioning, free youth clinic sanctioning, free registration for youth clubs and expansion of the Youth Scholarship Program.
