Oskar has been with SkyNRG since he left university where he wrote a dissertation on project finance for Sustainable Aviation Fuels. The emerging use of electrofuel (eFuel) as an interchangeable substitute for petrol, diesel and aviation fuel has the potential to create important new demand for Southern Africa's platinum group metals (PGMs). This is because eFuel is a combination of green hydrogen and waste carbon dioxide (CO2) and demand for PGMs will arise when proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers are used to generate the green hydrogen. PGMs and PEMs go hand-in-glove. Infinium founder and CEO Robert Schuetzle made mention of this in a Zoom interview with Mining Weekly and reported that one of the two electrolysers chosen for his company's recently launched eFuels facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a PGM-using PEM system. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Two electrolysis platforms were chosen by Infinium to gain procurement, commissioning, construction and now operational experience of the two platforms and their integration with eFuels. "We'll need massive amounts of electrolysis for our eFuels facilities, so that could be a driver for PGMs in the PEM category," said Schuetzle. Infinium is a technology owner and a project developer. It has a patent portfolio approaching 200 patents globally and manufactures its own proprietary catalysts in-house. It has about a dozen projects at various stages of development globally, including the Roadrunner project in West Texas, and the Reuze project in Dunkirk, France, which is being developed with Engie and ArcelorMittal. "We now have eFuels mandates in the EU as well as the UK. We know other geographies are looking at import benefits and a number of incentives around eFuels. While it's a new topic today, in the coming years, you'll see that accelerate and you'll see adoption of eFuels in customers' decarbonisation goals accelerate. "It's close to a net zero carbon fuel solution and it doesn't require infrastructure changes because it's not a new specification. This is a drop-in transportation fuel, which, again, makes it easier for our customers to help achieve their decarbonisation goals," Schuetzle emhasised. SOUTH AFRICA LINK Interestingly, the PGM-promoting and South Africa-linked venture capital company, AP Ventures, is not only an investor in Infinium but a contributor that Schuetzle ranks as a strategic partner: "We work with them regularly on partnership opportunities, on project opportunities, on strategy." "What I appreciate most about the AP Ventures team is their thought leadership in this industry, and the connections they're able to make," said Schuetzle. With its proprietary technology, Infinium eFuels include sustainable eSAF aviation fuel, which can be used in today's aircraft fleet. An e-diesel that can be used in long-haul transport, shipping or maritime applications anywhere that diesel is used is also produced, along with a naphtha product that is lighter than the diesel and the eSAF, but is used in petrochemical applications for the production of plastics. "Because we use waste CO2 that would otherwise be emitted to atmosphere, these fuels, when produced, are very close to net zero carbon fuels that our customers such as Amazon and American Airlines, can use directly in their vehicle fleets to help achieve their decarbonisation goals," Schuetzle emphasised. What is Infinium's background? Infinium has a long history through our predecessor company that was focused on small-scale gas-to-liquids, very similar to the eFuels technology. But going back 15 years, our technology platform was focused on converting natural gas or waste gases like flare gas into fuels and chemicals. It's an area called gas-to-liquids. There are some major players that do it at very large scale, such as Shell and Sasol, but our platform operates at a very small scale due to our proprietary technology. In einer Agglomerationsgemeinde eine kleine Stadt aus dem Boden zu stampfen und eine der grössten mobilen Tribünen der Welt zu bauen, das alleine ist schon ein währschafter Hosenlupf! OK-Präsident des ESAF Thomas Weber, Regierungsrat von Basel-Land, ist heute im Tagesgespräch. Dieses Wochenende werden rund 400 000 Besucherinnen und Besucher nach Pratteln pilgern, ans Eidgenössischen Schwing und Älplerfest. Zum Vergleich: Im ganzen Kanton Basel-Landschaft leben 290 000 Menschen. Das Fest zu ermöglichen war nicht gerade einfach, es war ein zähes Ringen – vor dem eigentlichen Hosenlupf. Denn das Eidgenössische findet dieses Jahr nicht auf dem Land auf irgendeiner grünen Wiese statt, sondern mitten in der Welt, mitten in der Agglomerationsgemeinde Pratteln mit ihren Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern aus 100 verschiedenen Nationen. Ein kulturell spannende Mix, der auch für Spannungen sorgen kann: Wie kann ein solcher Riesenanlass inmitten von Bahn, Strasse und Hochspannungsleitungen sicher sein? Haben Trachten und Volkstänze aus aller Welt Platz an diesem urschweizerischen Event? Über fünf Jahre dauerte es, einen Standort zu suchen, Sicherheitskonzepte zu entwerfen, die Perrons des Bahnhofs zu verlängern, einen Gabentempel mit Preisen im Wert von über einer Million Franken zu füllen, 4200 Freiwillige zu rekrutieren, Armee und Zivilschützer zu organisieren, 42 Sattelschlepper mit Material anzukarren Nur, um ein paar Eckpunkte zu nennen, die nötig sind, damit am Sonntag ein König aus dem Ring steigen kann. Doch der Kanton Basel-Landschaft will mehr: Der Spuk soll nicht nach dem Wochenende vorbei sein. Gerade kulturell sollen die Vereine im ganzen Kanton noch weiter von diesem Ereignis zehren können. Viel seiner Energie hat OK-Präsident Thomas Weber für das Schwingfest gegeben. Weber, der abseits vom ESAF auch noch Gesundheits- und Wirtschaftsdirektor von Basel-Landschaft ist. Über diese Herausforderungen, sein Engagement und seine Ziele erzählt Thomas Weber im Tagesgespräch mit Karoline Arn.

Heute beginnt das Eidgenössische Schwing- und Älplerfest ESAF. In Pratteln messen sich 274 Schwinger, der Schwingerkönig gewinnt den Muni Magnus. Und auch für die anderen siegreichen Schwinger gibt's zum Teil Tiere. Viel einträglicher sind aber ohnehin die Verträge mit Sponsoren.

Pratteln und das Eidgenössische Schwingfest passen auf den ersten Blick nicht zusammen: hier der urbane und industriell geprägte Vorort Basels, dort der Traditionsanlass. Doch Pratteln ist bereit und freut sich auf die vielen Besucher, die an diesem Wochenende am ESAF erwartet werden. Die weiteren Themen:  * In Basel wird dieses Wochenende das 125-Jahr Jubiläum des ersten Zionistenkongresses gefeiert. Unter den 1000 Gästen wird auch Israels Staatspräsident Isaac Herzog in Basel erwartet. * Trotz grosser Trockenheit ist es in der Schweiz in diesem Jahr bisher nicht zu grösseren Waldbränden gekommen. Das hat mit der Vegetation, aber auch mit der Pflege zu tun.  * Brasilien erlebte in den letzten Tagen einen Staatsbesuch der anderen Art. Das Herz des ehemaligen Kaisers wurde anlässlich der 200-jährigen Unabhängigkeit Brasiliens eingeflogen - und wurde direkt zum kontroversen Wahlkampfthema. 

Seit Wochen müssen hunderte von Asylsuchenden in den Niederlanden im Freien übernachten. Der Grund: Das nationale Aufnahmezentrum «Ter Apel» im Nordosten des Landes ist überfüllt, die Behörden überfordert. Wie konnte es soweit kommen? Gespräch mit dem freien Journalisten Thomas Verfuss. «Warum muss ich immer wieder beweisen, dass ich die Schweiz liebe?» Das fragt sich Shqipe Sylejmani seit ihrer Kindheit. Die 34-jährige Albanerin lebt seit ihrem vierten Lebensjahr in der Schweiz. Für sie ist die Schweiz ihr «Dehei» und der Kosovo ihre Heimat. In ihrem Roman «Bürde und Segen» blickt Shqipe Sylejmani auf ihre Migrationserfahrungen zurück. Wie lebt es sich mit zwei Nationalitäten im Herzen, und wie steht man im Kosovo zu den «Schatzis» genannten Landsleuten, die im Ausland ihr Glück gefunden haben? Nun verlangt Pink Cross, der Dachverband der homo- und bisexuellen Männer, dass der Bund die besondere Lage ausrufen soll. Weitere Themen: Ende August findet in Pratteln im Kanton Baselland das Eidgenössische Schwing- und Älplerfest ESAF statt. Mit rund 400'000 Besuchenden ist das ESAF längst der grösste Sportanlass der Schweiz. Dafür dass die Festivitäten nur ein Wochenende lang dauern, ist der Aufwand jedoch gigantisch. Ist ein solcher Grossanlass in Zeiten der Nachhaltigkeit noch vertretbar? Erstmals seit Monaten ist die Inflation in den USA wieder gesunken. Von bislang 9 Prozent auf 8.5 Prozent. Marktbeobachter und Ökonominnen vermuten, dass die Inflation ihren Höhepunkt damit vorläufig überschritten hat.
