Ongoing extinction event caused by human activity
POPULARITY
Like the Hugh Masekela song “Bring Him Back Home,” which helped free Nelson Mandela from 27 years in prison, the Earth needs to be loved and returned to the forefront of our personal lives, our civic decisions, and our hope for Peace. Give the Earth so much Love that the imagination of our home becomes where we live again. With the Earth as our leader, we can hallucinate back to what's real. Imagine our way out of violent products. Yes, the Earth gives us love and asks that we continue life, creating life that, in turn, continues to love and live. Life wants life to live. But the Earth is also powerfully political, giving us Love so that we have natural world's agent of change. Love gives us the power to be radical. And here at the Sixth Extinction, we need to be radical. Oh, do we ever. Radical - right now.
We can only defeat CLIMATE CHANGE ON PURPOSE and RACIST-WARS-EVERYWHERE-ALL-THE-TIME - if we are a lot weirder than our current crop of criminal clowns. There's a good reason that Philip K. Dick, Octavia Butler, and Ursula Le Guin are so popular. Science fiction can glimpse a kind of moral life so strong it can overthrow the ethno-state. The nonfiction of Mussolini & Hitler & Stalin is sobering. But then you add the Sixth Extinction, and you have an update on government by Laugh-and-Cry-Out-Loud-Cruelty. Trump casts desperate people in their role as stateless migrants so he can demonize them and then kill them as they wander the Earth looking for livable, good weather. You and I are way over here on the horizon, pulling weeds from our little garden. We know we must get some serious personal wildness before the sun goes down.
This week, Sacred Symbols is a Kojima Fanboy Podcast... for a little while, anyway. Finally -- finally! -- we have a release date for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and it's fairly close, arriving on PlayStation 5 in late June. And as a deep love for Kojima is perhaps the biggest gaming stance all three Sacred hosts share, we thought we'd spend some time getting hyped up following an all-new 10 minute trailer, collector's edition and pre-order details, and so on. Other news this week includes word of major forthcoming updates to PS5 Pro, the leak of a mysterious PSP game called STAMP that was never greenlit into production, the announcement of PowerWash Simulator 2 (!) from FuturLab, rumors of imminent PS5 releases for Indiana Jones and an Oblivion Remake, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of the reveal that Naughty Dog's Intergalactic will deal with religion as a central theme? Do we have any thoughts about the copious leaks from the recent Battlefield playtests? How will MLB: The Show 25 shape-up in its first current-gen-only PlayStation outing? Does Dustin have a serious misconception of what some people actually do when listening to our shows? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. Like the survivors of Hurricane Helene, we are bombarded with conspiracy theories, with the news that the super storms are brought to life in test tubes by leftist mad scientists. We know it's time to move into the subway. You have to wonder. Folks are not responding to climate change. And if, like the Blue Ridge people who drowned in a year's worth of rain downpouring in a single day, you actually experience the Sixth Extinction's reality, then ex-marines high on angel dust cappuccinos will hunt you down with bowel-movement-inducing conspiracies. Your tragedy won't be permitted to be real. So, the entire staff of Earth Riot Radio has moved into the F Train. Let the 200 mph winds and boiling ocean waves and biological germ warfare bombs that escaped from the Cold War roll down the streets above…
How Do We Feel? Immersed In Worldwide Confusion? None of our activism is working. The hottest 19 months in the last 100,000 years are the last 19 months. How do we talk to the only activist about what to do? We have taken a giant step into the Sixth Extinction. All the national pledges for controlling carbon emissions have failed. Our international climate conferences last year, biodiversity in Colombia, reparations in Azerbaijan, plastics in Korea - were ambushed by corporate saboteurs, marketers and lawyers... And we can't stop our fossil fuel Consumerism! We need to drive the screens out of our brains! Earthalujah!
2024. What the Hell happened? This was the year that rushed up at us like a freak storm. This year, all the eco-systems were fully committed to the Sixth Extinction, and so are we. 2025. We awake from a deep sleep and change completely. Our bodies are ecosystems, too, knowing the Earth. This is a wild party we can't refuse. Our clothes are tearing, and the wind is peeling away our walls. We searched, but we found that our logical thinking was gone. We must find our love. Make the Earth's storm more wild? Nothing can change without our love. Annie & Jenn wrap up their discussion of "The Sixth Extinction, part 1."
Continuing our Mythology Series, Annie and Jenn unpack the Season 7 opener "The Sixth Extinction." Part 1 of 2.
Is any resistance to our carbon-based life style gonna happen? For years now screaming doomsayers have predicted these drowning and burning cities, the starvation and drought and disease. Is the Sixth Extinction underway? This week, with music from Common and the Fiery Eagles of Justice and The Stop Shopping Choir and lots of bullfrogs…. We ask: Can We be Strange Enough To Change Enough?
The Earth is everywhere all the time, it's you and me and the ideas, pixels and bad breath that connect us. The Earth is in charge and what they (the Earth is non-binary, we believe in the Church of Stop Shopping) - what they are working hard at just now is something called the Sixth Extinction. In the Earth Riot Radio world this is what has replaced the nation state, religion and military. It is deep, extreme Evolution. Oh Earthalujah! Spare us! Give us a strange strength we have never known! And may we laugh till we die!

In 2021, Greta Thunberg spoke to the youth climate movement at an event leading up to COP26. Her famous "Blah, Blah, Blah" speech contrasted all of the things world leaders had said about the climate crisis and what those same leaders had actually done to reduce emissions and create policies to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis. Three years later, very little has changed. Of the 128 countries that set Net Zero goals, only five percent have taken the required first steps toward achieving those goals. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Elizabeth Kolbert joins the podcast this week to discuss how the climate crisis gets talked about by world leaders, activists, scientists, and the media may differ from the actual facts of the world's warming situation. Her new book "H is for Hope: Climate Change from A to Z" is a collection of 26 essays on various aspects of the climate crisis which tell the complete picture of what's going on, what's led us to this point, and where we could go from here. Like Elizabeth's previous books, such as "Field Notes from a Catastrophe", "The Sixth Extinction", and "Under a White Sky", "H is for Hope" is an insightful and sobering book from one of today's great climate writers. This week we are traversing the hills and valleys of Mulder's psyche while we discuss “The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati”! We're talking painfully obvious Jesus metaphors, how exciting it is that Mulder has finally become the X-File, Scully sucking out Skinner's nanobots, the exciting return of Deep Throat, how Kimberly really needs an anti-Boo Crew security device, and Mulder and Scully professing their love for each other in front of their Doordash driver. We clown on this episode more than we really intended, we sigh at the conclusion of Diana's storyline, we note how hurtful it is that Deep Throat tells Mulder he is not the center of the universe, and we laugh at all the really, really subtle subtext. Also, Scully doesn't believe in aliens again, we guess? In the words of Gillian Anderson herself: I don't know if we can keep doing this, Chris.Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!
This week we are showing off our extraterrestrial telekinetic powers while we discuss “The Sixth Extinction”! We're talking Mulder becoming an All-Brain (whatever that is), hate on trilobites for a while, Scully in her Lara Croft/Indiana Jones era, 0 days since Mulder and Skinner's last physical confrontation, and how much we hate the Frankenstein monster Dr. Barnes. Booooooo. We celebrate and appreciate Machete Scully, try our very best to figure out what Diana's deal is, wonder why Skinner does not seem to know where any of his direct reports are at any given time, and propose that Diana and Mulder could really get a Phantom Thread situation going. They could really make it work!Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!
The Six Ideas to Change the World series, in partnership with Keystone Positive Change Investment Trust, continues in October with award-winning writer and journalist Elizabeth Kolbert, author of the international best-seller The Sixth Extinction. Plastics are poisoning us. In the midst of a global pollution crisis, research clearly illustrates the toxic effects of microplastics, which both release and attract dangerous chemicals. But while plastics are a relatively recent human invention, they have become so ubiquitous as to seem indispensable. Will our planet ever be rid of them? Join us to hear Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Kolbert discuss life beyond plastics and the wider conundrums posed by human inventions and technologies; how they contribute to and create environmental problems, but also retain important uses and may even be used as solutions. Speakers Elizabeth Kolbert is the author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change and the international best-seller The Sixth Extinction, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. For her work at The New Yorker, where she's been a staff writer since 1999, she has received two National Magazine Awards and the Blake-Dodd Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her latest book, Under a White Sky, was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Writing on Global Conservation. Kolbert lives in Williamstown, Massachusetts, with her husband and children. Six Ideas to Change the World We are at a critical point in the global response to climate change, and the conversation around the central issues remains complex. Amidst numerous debates and conflicting narratives, public discourse runs the risk of information overload, at a time when urgent action is necessary, at both an individual and collective level. This curated series of live online events, in partnership with Keystone Positive Change Investment Trust, offers a clearer path, spotlighting the most compelling, important and hard-hitting work being published today — the six ideas that will shape the future of our planet. Tune in each month to hear stories and ideas we can all learn from. Whether it's advice on changing diets, or solutions to the world's water crisis, these conversations will suggest a blueprint for what we must do in the years ahead. Each event will feature the author of a recent work, in conversation with an expert host about the most important issues and takeaways. Audiences will also have the chance to submit questions. The recordings of previous events in the series are available to view on 5x15's Youtube channel. With thanks for your generous support for 5x15's online series. Today's episode features an interview with Pulitzer prize winning journalist and author, Elizabeth Kolbert. Elizabeth has been reporting on the climate crisis for several decades, and her book “The Sixth Extinction” brought her enormous critical acclaim. Her most recent book, “Under a White Sky”, explores the nature of the future, analyzing how humans have, and will continue to change the planet and its ecosystems in response to our rapidly changing climate. In the book, she explores controversial ideas such as carbon capture technologies and atmospheric geoengineering. My inspiration for reaching out to Elizabeth Kolbert for this interview came from fellow Wild Lens Collective filmmaker, Kristin Tieche. Kristin has been directing a feature documentary about bats and the threat of white-nose syndrome for almost five years now, and her inspiration for initiating the project came from an article that she read back in 2009 written by none other than Elizabeth Kolbert. Kolbert's article about a mysterious die-off of bats in a cave in upstate New York eventually became a key component of her book, “The Sixth Extinction”, and it also raised a warning for bat populations across North America, which have continued to be decimated by the introduction of the fungal blight called white-nose syndrome. So when Kristin explained this connection to me and suggested that we reach out to Elizabeth Kolbert for a podcast interview, I grabbed a copy of her latest book, “Under a White Sky”, and started reading. The book is exceptional and terrifying. It paints a picture of our future in which our human society will be forced to make some very difficult decisions, and in which the best case scenario still most likely involves geoengineering. On the one hand, it showcases some fascinating cases of human ingenuity, and on the other hand, it shows how our ingenuity can spiral out of control and cause unforeseen problems that have no easy solutions. As you'll hear while you listen, Elizabeth does not shy away from the truth, even when it gets ugly, and her bluntness actually feels like a breath of fresh air. It was a true honor for both Kristin and myself to have this opportunity to speak with such an influential journalist and author.-Matt PodolskyResources:Elizabeth Kolbert's New Yorker staff profileClimate Change from A to Z - New Yorker article mentioned in the interviewMore information about Elizabeth Kolbert's most recent book, “Under a White Sky” This is a public episode. Over 60 years ago Rachel Carson warned of "Silent Spring (s)" to come from the harms of indiscriminate use of pesticides. Since then the threatening big picture has broadened to position the Earth in the current period of the Sixth Extinction. Extinctions are gradual but silence can be sudden as it seemed to honey bee veterinarian Elizabeth Hilborn who had to solve a mystery of what killed animals on her North Carolina farm. When she identified the cause, solutions and hopeful signs, it led to writing a book with a message:Restoring Eden.

Daar gaan we vandaag achter komen. Meer lezen?: - H. Mulder, De Ontdekking van de Natuur (2021). - E. Kolbert, The Sixth Extinction (2014). - J. Lovelock, Novascene (2019). - N. Peeters, Flora Batava (2023).
Of all the species that have ever existed on Earth, 99% of them are gone. Most of those were wiped out during what are known as "Mass Extinction Events". Since life emerged on our planet, there have been five mass extinctions. Sometimes these events last many years. But sometimes a mass extinction can happen very, very suddenly. Some scientists think we're on the verge of a sixth mass extinction. Others think it's already begun. But the question everybody asks is: "Is there anything we can do to stop it?" --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thewhyfiles/support
The only thing I remember for sure about this show is I ate an entire dozen eggs all at once. I hope some of the other calls were fun too. Oh, I tossed my wallet on a few roofs, by accident, and that was fun too. I'm sorry for the light audio clipping at some points, I think I know where it came from and it shouldn't be happening again. Anyway -- Enjoy.
We mark Earth Day 2023 with some of the most impressive minds working on climate change issues today. Joining us for the discussion: WAMC's Alan Chartock, Former EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck, Award-winning author, activist, and educator Bill McKibben, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of "The Sixth Extinction," Elizabeth Kolbert, and contributing editor at Rolling Stone, where he has covered climate change for more than a decade, Jeff Goodell.
Anne and Paul Ehrlich wrote: “Evidence points to the need for a quasi-religious transformation of cultural values.” Passover and Easter are liberation stories, from Egypt & from Rome; into the Promised Land & into the miracle of Life After Death. Christians & Jews celebrate control over the Earth, its storms & bodies of water & animals. An obedient natural world is the theatrical frame of Moses and Jesus. But that is the virtual reality of faith. In fact, of course, the Earth is in control & never more than now, as we careen into the Sixth Extinction. To believe in this planet-wide event is to have a new kind of faith. Earthalujah!

Swan In the tradition of Silent Spring and The Sixth Extinction, an urgent, “disturbing, empowering, and essential” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) book about the ways in which chemicals in the modern environment are changing—and endangering—human sexuality and fertility on the grandest scale, from renowned epidemiologist Shanna Swan. In 2017, author Shanna Swan and her team of researchers completed a major study. They found that over the past four decades, sperm levels among men in Western countries have dropped by more than 50 percent. They came to this conclusion after examining 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. The result sent shockwaves around the globe—but the story didn't end there. It turns out our sexual development is changing in broader ways, for both men and women and even other species, and that the modern world is on pace to become an infertile one. How and why could this happen? What is hijacking our fertility and our health? Count Down unpacks these questions, revealing what Swan and other researchers have learned about how both lifestyle and chemical exposures are affecting our fertility, sexual development—potentially including the increase in gender fluidity—and general health as a species. Engagingly explaining the science and repercussions of these worldwide threats and providing simple and practical guidelines for effectively avoiding chemical goods (from water bottles to shaving cream) both as individuals and societies, Count Down is “staggering in its findings” (Erin Brockovich, The Guardian) and “will serve as an awakening” (The New York Times Book Review). Note: Due to internet difficulties due to storms in California delaying uploading of the video, the video post of this podcast will be delayed by a few hours. We are thus releasing the audio version now. (Usually these are released at the same time.) Seven years ago I invited Elizabeth Kolbert to participate in a dialogue about Extinctions at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, following the publication of her Pulitzer Prizewinning masterpiece, The Sixth Extinction. Once we began The Origins Podcast, I knew that I wanted to have an in depth discussion with her about her work reporting on science issues, most importantly on climate change and other technological challenges facing modern society. An opportunity arose with the publication of her most recent book, Under a White Sky, which focuses on how scientists, and politicians, have attempted—with with widely varying degrees of success—to address the unintended consequences of various human alterations of terrestrial ecosystems. It is a fascinating book, told, as is typical in her writing, by relating personal experiences as Elizabeth has traveled the world to meet scientists and others spearheading attempts at solving sometimes urgent ecological crises induced as a result of the application of previous human technologies. Elizabeth writes so clearly about science that I wanted to explore her own journey, from a student focusing on German literature, to one of the pre-eminent science writers in the country, working as a staff writer for The New Yorker Magazine. We had a wide ranging discussion about her own experiences and then moved on to discuss more broadly the issues raised in her most recent books. Incidentally, the title of her new book comes from the fact that one of the side-effects of solar geoengineering, which I expect will be an inevitable response to climate change in a world where governments and businesses prefer to carry on business as usual in spite of concerns about rising temperatures, sea levels, and other potentially dangerous consequences of increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. The effect in question, if aerosols are injected in the upper atmosphere to reduce the intensity of solar radiation impinging on the earth's surface, will be to cause formerly bright blue skies to instead resemble the whiter skies those who live in big cities are used to. A potentially unfortunate consequence, but perhaps less unfortunate than other potential consequences of global climate change. The conversation was fantastic. Everything I had hoped for. We went on for over 2 hours, but the time passed quickly because it was so fascinating. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And by the way, if you enjoy this podcast, Elizabeth will be joining the Origins Project Foundation Galapagos Travel Adventure in January of 2024. Reservations will open up at the beginning of April for this exciting trip, with Elizabeth, Frans de Waal, me, and 33 other Origins voyagers. Where did the future go? It feels like the future no longer waits beyond the next moment. The Ukraine War is a miniature replay of World War 2… Trump is like Huey Long crossed with Bozo. The Museum of Modern Art still tries to scandalize us with futurists from the past. Covid is the Creature of the Black Lagoon. What do we expect of our future as we cross the threshold of the New Year? All optimism is recycled industrial waste. But I like the Sixth Extinction. It's hair-raising. It isn't made of the past.
By Amy Goodman & Denis Moynihan The previous five extinctions occurred from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of years ago. The sixth extinction is taking place right now, largely due to human activity.
Last week, after more than a year of drama and deal-cutting, the Senate passed a complicated piece of legislation called the Inflation Reduction Act. Its name notwithstanding, it's being celebrated as the most important piece of climate legislation in the history of this country. And that is “a pretty low bar,” the staff writer Elizabeth Kolbert tells David Remnick, “because they've never really passed a piece of legislation on climate change.” While far smaller than the proposed Build Back Better legislation, Kolbert says, the bill includes significant tax credits that will incentivize the adoption of lower-carbon technologies. But the name of the bill, which seems to recognize that the mass of voters care more about the price of oil than a habitable planet, suggests that the political headwinds have not slackened. “George Bush famously said back in the early nineties [that] our way of life is not up for negotiation,” Kolbert notes. “Well… our way of life may not be compatible with dealing with climate change.” She mentions the recent devastating floods in Kentucky, a red state; “Is Kentucky now going to go vote for people who are firmly committed to climate action? I sadly don't expect that to happen.” Kolbert is the author of books including “The Sixth Extinction” and “Under a White Sky.”

Support us on www.patreon.com/genanthro It's hard to avoid the sense of despair that surrounds the story of climate change – and for that matter the story of the Anthropocene. It can all feel so hopeless. So, who is responsible for the weight of these feelings? What responsibility lies with the scientists and journalists who are bringing us the hard truth? Elizabeth Kolbert is one of the premier science journalists living today, and in this conversation she confronts that question head on. And, of couse, we also talk about the Anthropocene.
How irreversibly have we altered the natural world? That's a question climate journalist Elizabeth Kolbert has been trying to answer for decades while reporting on the environment for The New Yorker magazine. In her Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Sixth Extinction, she explored the ways in which our capacity for destruction has reshaped the natural world. In her latest book - Under a White Sky - The Nature of the Future she examines how the very sorts of interventions that have imperiled our planet are increasingly seen as the only hope for its salvation. And today—in recognition of Earth Day, she joins Patrick Flynn, SVP and Global Head of Sustainability at Salesforce, to discuss what steps we need to take to reign in carbon emissions and save our planet.Mentions: Elizabeth's Book – Under a White Sky, the Nature of the FutureIPCC Global Climate Predictions
