Police Shootings and Race: Facts and Truth – California Cop's Story. Few topics generate as much controversy as police shootings, especially when race enters the conversation. Be sure to check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The interview with Jeff Wenninger is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. His story, widely shared on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, and Medium, sheds light on his personal experiences with officer-involved shootings and dives into the broader societal context of race, police work, and public perception. Retired Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Jeff Wenninger is our guest. He spent 33 years on the force, offers a rare and candid glimpse into the complexities of these incidents.Wenninger further explores these pressing issues. The interview with Jeff Wenninger is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The Incident That Changed Everything. Police Shootings and Race: Facts and Truth – California Cop's Story. Early in his career, Wenninger was thrust into the center of an officer-involved shooting while responding to a domestic violence call. The scene escalated rapidly when the suspect opened fire, forcing Wenninger to make split-second, life-or-death decisions. He describes experiencing “auditory exclusion,” where sounds become muted, and the mind locks onto the immediate threat. Time seemed to slow as his instincts took over, guiding him through the chaos. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. For Wenninger, the aftermath of the shooting was nearly as jarring as the event itself. Physically, he dealt with stomach issues and sleep disturbances, while mentally, the incident weighed heavily on him. These reactions, although distressing, are not uncommon among officers who face traumatic events on duty. Later in his career, as a sergeant, Wenninger found himself reliving those same physical and emotional tolls when one of his subordinate officers was involved in a fatal shooting. The stress echoed the feelings he had during his own earlier experience, illustrating the long-lasting effects of such encounters on officers. Race and Public Perception. Police Shootings and Race: Facts and Truth. One of the most contentious aspects of officer-involved shootings is the role race plays in public perception and media coverage. Wenninger reflects on how often the race of the officer and the suspect can influence reactions to a shooting, even before all the facts are known. This dynamic is especially pronounced in California, where high-profile cases have sparked widespread debates over policing, justice, and race. Wenninger discusses how police officers, including himself, frequently face questions about the racial dynamics of these encounters. While statistics like those from Statista report that 828 civilians were shot by police in the U.S. between 2017 and 2024, with 181 of those being Black, he emphasizes that these numbers don't always tell the whole story. They focus on the tragic outcomes but often overlook the actions or circumstances that led to the shootings, which can drastically change the context. The interview is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website and most major podcast Platforms. For instance, as of 2024, 1,163 fatal police shootings occurred in the U.S. in 2023 alone, with Black Americans disproportionately affected. The rate of fatal shootings for Black individuals stood at 6.2 per million people between 2015 and September 2024. While these statistics are alarming and underscore the racial disparities in police shootings, Wenninger points out that the context in which officers make split-second decisions—often under extreme duress—is frequently absent from these discussions. He stresses that understanding the full scope of these incidents requires acknowledging the danger officers face and the legal standards for using deadly force, not just focusing on the racial dynamics of the outcome. Psychological and Physiological Effects on Officers. Police Shootings and Race. Wenninger doesn't shy away from discussing the psychological and physiological toll police shootings have on officers. A study conducted by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) found that officers involved in shootings often experience a range of reactions, from “tunnel vision”—where one's field of view narrows—to time distortions, where events appear to unfold in slow or fast motion. Many also report heightened senses or auditory blunting, where certain sounds become imperceptible during high-stress moments. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and most all social media platforms. In the aftermath of a shooting, officers like Wenninger often endure sleep disturbances, anxiety, and even depression. While some may not experience immediate fear during the shooting itself, the sense of imminent danger to themselves or others can justify the use of deadly force. Contrary to earlier research, which suggested long-term psychological effects from such incidents, Wenninger notes that many officers, himself included, do not suffer lasting trauma. However, he does acknowledge that the reactions of colleagues, investigators, and even family members can greatly influence how an officer copes in the days, weeks, and months following the incident. Physical symptoms often accompany these psychological reactions. Officers may experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, or gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, all of which Wenninger himself dealt with after his shooting. Cognitive effects, including confusion or poor memory, and emotional responses like depression, anger, and irritability are also common. In more severe cases, some officers turn to maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as alcohol consumption or social withdrawal, which can signal the onset of diagnosable mental health disorders if left unchecked. The Stress of the Job: Beyond Shootings. Police Shootings and Race: Facts and Truth – California Cop's Story. While officer-involved shootings are a significant source of stress, Wenninger also highlights the other, less visible stressors that affect law enforcement officers. These include organizational issues like race and gender discrimination within the department, mistrust among colleagues, and overall job dissatisfaction. Wenninger notes that while officers are often mentally prepared for the challenges of dealing with the public, they are less equipped to handle internal issues within their departments. These internal stressors can lead officers to feel betrayed by their organizations, which further compounds their stress and mental health struggles. We also provide written articles on Newsbreak and Medium. We also reach our community through Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Nextdoor. Shift work, another common aspect of policing, exacerbates these stressors. The irregular hours and unpredictable schedules often associated with law enforcement work can make it difficult for officers to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Over time, the physical and emotional toll of shift work can contribute to feelings of burnout and job dissatisfaction, which further erode an officer's mental and physical health. The Importance of Understanding the Full Story. Police Shootings and Race: Facts and Truth. Through his story, Wenninger underscores the importance of looking beyond the numbers when it comes to police shootings. Statistics are essential for understanding the scope of the issue, but they don't capture the full reality of what officers face in these high-pressure situations. He stresses the need for the public and media to recognize the context in which these incidents occur—the split-second decisions, the imminent danger, and the emotional toll that these encounters take on officers. Wenninger's experiences remind us that the conversation about police shootings and race is multifaceted. It's not just about the statistics or the racial dynamics; it's also about understanding the mental and physical challenges that officers face, both during and after these incidents. By exploring these complexities, Wenninger hopes to foster a more informed, nuanced dialogue around police violence and the broader societal factors at play. Listen to this interview as a free podcast on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. A Cop's Reflections and His Upcoming Book. Police Shootings and Race. As a retired officer, Wenninger is using his platform to share his story and engage with the ongoing conversation about police shootings and race. In addition to his podcasts and social media presence, he is the author of the upcoming book *On Thin Ice*, where he delves deeper into the issues surrounding policing, race, and public perception. Through his reflections, Wenninger offers a unique and valuable perspective on the realities of police work, challenging some of the prevailing narratives around officer-involved shootings. His story, featured on LinkedIn and across various media platforms, continues to be a critical contribution to the national dialogue on police violence, race, and the complexities of law enforcement in California and beyond. Artificial intelligence, quantum computing and satellites have the potential to exponentially improve our capability to monitor and predict the impacts of climate change on our environment. As floods and natural disasters hit Nepal and other countries this summer, in this episode of the On Thin Ice podcast we look at how new technologies and other proven methods can help stay safe in the mountains and in the great outdoors. Host Paolo Bosonin speaks with Laura Kottlowski, professional ice skater and influencer with tens of millions of viewers on TikTok and Instagram, and Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa, glaciologist at ICIMOD.Laura Kottlowski shares her insights from years of studying frozen lakes around the world, and explains how her discipline is having to adapt to the loss of ice around the world, where many natural ice rinks are quickly disappearing.Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa, who has been closely watching the evolution of glaciers around Mount Everest and other parts of the Himalayas, breaks down some of the dangers faced by local populations: with melting glaciers, there are more and more lakes that could outburst and cause massive damage to villages and people living downstream. But Tenzing, Laura and other scientists say artificial intelligence and machine learning can scale up their ability to process satellite images and other data, allowing for a better understanding of the consequences of higher temperatures on our world's ice - and on the communities whose lives depend on it.So can AI help us mitigate the risks brought by climate change? Can Africa become the next innovation hub for climate tech? From solar power to recycled materials and carbon capture, an array of technological advances are promising to help humanity live more sustainably–and fight global warming. But for now, much of that tech is still out of reach for most people in the Global South. In Africa, some pioneering entrepreneurs and advocates are trying to change that: in this episode of On Thin Ice, host Paolo Bosonin speaks with climate entrepreneur Bilha Ndirangu and alpinist Saray Khumalo, who share their strategies for making Africa a global climate innovation hub.Saray, who is credited with breaking several records, including becoming the first Black woman to complete the so-called Seven Summits, climbs and guides groups to raise money to bring a better education to children across the continent. Bilha is known for leading several climate related projects in Africa, and she recently announced an ambitious partnership with ClimeWorks of Switzerland to build a massive carbon capture facility. So what's at stake for a continent that emits a small percentage of global emissions, and yet faces direct consequences of climate change, such as droughts, natural disasters, and the disappearance of glaciers?Bilha and Saray say the solutions lie in Africa's young population, in its rich natural resources, and fast-growing economies. On Thin Ice is produced by Iceworm Media, in partnership with the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation. To help paint the picture, last year, Rob managed 12 events across 3 continents featuring over 150 athletes from 28 countries. (And I want to note, that's considered a down year). There's a lot that goes into putting something like that together, obviously, and you can bet your bottom dollar we'll cover it today. In this episode, we chat about a range of topics, including:
In China, the number of hikers, climbers and nature enthusiasts has boomed in the wake of the Covid pandemic. And it's not just about leisure travel: Following years of fast economic growth and the rapid expansion of megacities, a new generation of Chinese professionals and business leaders are taking action to accelerate the transition to sustainable business models, while also raising awareness about the manmade dangers threatening natural environments and rural communities. In this episode of On Thin Ice, host Paolo Bosonin speaks with Vivian Han, a former corporate executive who became the first Chinese woman to climb Everest both from Tibet and Nepal, and Lena Yang, head of Women's Wear Daily China and other publications, who has fostered greener supply chains in the fashion and beauty industries through a number of projects. The guests share their lessons and experiences in respective initiatives, including Lena's championing of ESG investing despite a tricky financial environment, and Vivian's fundraising efforts to provide scholarships for high school girls in less developed areas of China, as tourism brings economic opportunities and environmental challenges to communities around the country. On Thin Ice is produced by Iceworm Media, in partnership with the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation. Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, faces an environmental crisis, giving us a preview of the devastating effects of climate change. While the ice on its glaciers is melting at a record pace, increasing the risk of floods and other disasters, mass tourism has brought garbage and other pollution issues for local populations.Climbers Conrad Anker and Dawa Steven Sherpa have worked together in the Everest Valley. Today, they are both taking action. In this episode of On Thin Ice, they discuss how climbers and local communities can work together to protect the mountain and its people from climate threats.Conrad is one of the most iconic alpinists of the past three decades, and he has witnessed the dramatic transformations brought by climate change to mountain environments everywhere; he is now working with local communities and experienced Sherpa mountaineers to help make ice climbing safer in the region, as the glaciers become more unpredictable. Dawa, a board member of the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation, is a famed mountaineer, serial entrepreneur and climate advocate, representing a new generation of Nepalis who are trying to develop a sustainable tourism industry–one that respects local traditions as well as the mountains they live off. Dawa has worked relentlessly to develop programs such as “Carry me back”, one of the key projects supported by the foundation, to reduce pollution and other negative impacts of tourism in the Everest Valley. How can the local Sherpa communities handle the tons of trash left behind by tourism? How can climbers mitigate the risks of glacier collapses and avalanches? These are some of the vital questions they address on the mountain on a daily basis, as they look for answers that could also help other alpinists around the world. Winter is upon us again and as we talked about last week on the show, so is the season for base training. For many runners in Canada and the northern United States, this can mean a lot of long, slow miles in very cold temperatures which can seem daunting and maybe even a little scary. We thought this would be a good time to re-release an episode we recorded with Scott Sugimoto in Jan of 2021. Scott Sugimoto is a 61 year old gentleman from Winnipeg who has an extensive running history in both road and trail running. He has completed multiple half and full marathons, as well as many trail ultramarathons including Actif Epica and Arrowhead. Scott has an affinity for winter running and is a wealth of knowledge on the subject. In this episode we get into the dos and don'ts of winter running including: What to wearWhat NOT to wearHow to keep your water from freezing,Preventing frostbiteWinter footwear. We are grateful to Scott for sharing his winter running wisdom with us.Resources we discussed in the episode:Favourite Mantra: Just survive somehow; I am one with the Force and the Force is with meFavourite Place to Run: BC mountainsBucket List Run or Fat Bike Ride: Tuscobia, Arrowhead 135, Iditarod Trail Invitational, Greenland Arctic Circle TrailFavourite Movie/Book: Prefontaine; On Thin Ice; In Shackleton's Footsteps; Post-Run Indulgence: A cup of soupConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Kim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's website (sign up for her free weekly newsletter on the homepage)We love hearing from you! We felt like we were On Thin Ice until we officially got our 2nd episode out this week. We didn't want to break our promise with a Bad Weather Betrayal. This week, Hunter's profile is Mask4Mask. Papa the Bear is still bringing up his birthday. We both want to have breakfast with Heather Gay. Grab your charcuterie and have a snack as we bite into episodes 4 and 5 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.
I bet you didn't think that The Toronto Zoo could get anymore interactive! Well, think again because the Zoo released a new app called “On Thin Ice” where you can play a virtual reality game on your phone at the Zoo in the Tundra area. The app is designed to teach you about Climate Change and how animals such as Polar Bears, Caribou, and Bowhead Whales are being affected by the consequences of climate change. Denise Hill-Fox and Dyann Powley join me on the podcast to discuss the various features of the app, including the virtual reality game, the See Your Impact section and the exploratory map of the Tundra section at the Zoo.

Jen and Craig have a laid back chat about Craig's new book "On Thin Ice". They talk about remote worksites with regards to efficiency and security. A lot of Great Advice. Must hear. The video is also available on the West Valley Warner Center YouTube site.

You can find the full web article, media and transcripts for the lesson here: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-idioms-5/ -The weather in the UK is suddenly getting cold, with our first proper frosts. Apparently we are getting weather from Sweden and Norway and we might even have a white Christmas, which has not happened in a long time. I guess, this is why I’m hearing so many English idioms related to cold at the moment. It was the Prime Minister who was **On Thin Ice** in the Brexit negotiations with the EU. Or the NHS being **Snowed Under** with extra work because of the Pandemic.

Tiffany Ayalik is an artist of many talents: storyteller, dancer, musician, throat singer, television host, actor. Of Inuit descent, Tiffany was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, in the Canadian Arctic. From an early age she learned the power of storytelling from the elders, a lesson that would have a lasting impact on her creative life. Tiffany is part of the throat singing duo, Piqsiq, and a member of the band, Quantum Tangle, which won a Juno Award in 2017 for Indigenous Album of the Year. Tiffany has numerous film credits including Sila, Two Lovers and a Bear, Edna's Bloodline, On Thin Ice, and Darkness by Sinister Oculus. Tiffany is also host of the television show, Wild Kitchen and her television credits include Little Dog, and A Christmas Fury. Most recently Tiffany was recipient of the Betty Mitchell Award (The Betty) for outstanding performance by an actress in a drama for her performance in the stage play, Cafe Daughter. In this episode we discuss the influence of Tiffany's mother, grandmother, and elders on her career, growing up in an environment with Dene and Inuit culture, musical experimentation, her experience playing twelve parts in a one person play, the historical vilification of throat singing and the importance of claiming it back, cultural appropriation, truth and reconciliation, and her other special skills including wrestling, firearms, gymnastics, fencing, wilderness survival, dog handling, biathlon, horseback riding, igloo building, stage combat and fly-wire training.

Keli Price is an actor, director, and producer from Long Island, New York. Raised by a musician father and a mother in the fashion business, Keli grew up surrounded by the arts. Keli struggled in school, and the things adults would say to him affected his confidence and made him feel like an outsider. The only thing that didn't make him feel like an outsider was when he was performing. Keli says music, sports, and the arts saved his life, and his confidence continued to grow when he and his brother began modeling as kids. Modeling would eventually lead to acting, and by the time Keli arrived in Los Angeles to continue nurturing his acting career, he had a realization: All those years of people telling him he couldn't achieve anything, he actually could. Now, he has a new documentary out called "On Thin Ice," and for Keli, it has brought everything full circle.

This is a lively one! Recording live at the Gociety Adventure Fest 2016 in Denver, we talk with two adventurers with very different approaches to outdoor exploration. Strap in for a lively debate toward the end of this episode as JJ and Eric discuss ancient pyramids that may or may not be hidden in South America. JJ Yosh is an adventure TV host who has travelled the world chronicling his adventures with Discovery Channel among others. He takes us behind the scenes to let us know what life is like for an adventure TV host and about his movie 10 years in the making. Eric is a Polar adventurer, expedition guide, dog musher and educator who spent the past 15 years traveling in some of the most remote and wild places left on earth. He’s one of the few people to have skied both the North and South Poles. In 2010 he became the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' in one year: the North and South Poles and Mount Everest. Eric discusses how long, boring, cold expeditions became his thing, to the point where he skied the North Pole, South Pole and Mount Everest in a calendar year. And the impact of being a dad on his adventure lifestyle. And they both join in on a lively debate about ancient pyramids that may or may not be buried under the South Pole.
