Without early-stage therapeutic intervention, many at-risk youth face a higher likelihood of becoming adult inmates within the ill-equipped and wildly expensive US prison system. Two advocates, operating at opposite ends of the institutional spectrum, believe that change is possible, especially when we extend trauma-informed support to the youngest and most vulnerable members of our society. In this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes David and Katya Dow to provide their observations regarding trauma care deficiencies within the juvenile and criminal justice ecosystem. About David R. Dow and Katya Dow: David R. Dow is the Cullen Professor at the University of Houston Law Center. He and his wife, Katya Dow, established the Juvenile and Children's Advocacy Project in 2014. Katya will complete her M.A. in counseling psychology from NYU in December. The McConney family decides to take a Christmas vacation. It was a welcome break after the troubling situation the family found themselves in. Weeks before Christmas, Heather McConney opened her son's phone, stumbling on disturbing conversations. 13-year-old Evan McConney had been communicating with a stranger through the online game Roblox. The two also reportedly communicated through Oculus, a virtual reality device. The parents then made all the right steps. They took away Evans' devices and turned them over to Layton police. The McConney family returned home from vacation on Monday. When the family woke up, Tuesday morning Evan was gone. An investigation revealed Evan McConney and his online “friend” had been exchanging “sexual and inappropriate” messages for about three weeks. While Evan's mom had taken steps to end the contact, the two reportedly found new ways to talk. Evan McConney joined a Discord chat at his new friend's invitation. It was through those chats that the two allegedly arranged to have McConney picked up from his home. Evan even took his passport with him, after his new friend encouraged him. The "friend" is Aaron Zemen...a 26-year-old man, living in Arizona. Zemen has several social media accounts revealing his admitted dog fetish and that he is a furry. A furry is a person who is an enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics. Many of Zeman's Twitter accounts are dedicated to his furry and puppy play fetish and contain photographs of his genitals and dog fetish clothing. Zeman had been using these accounts to tweet the 13-year-old. Program Notes Part II of a powerful conversation. Each time I speak with Wendy Murphy I come away feeling educated, inspired, and informed about the continuing struggle for us, as women, to achieve full human status in the U.S. Constitution. Sharing in conversation with a litigator for the rights of women and children, who is also a scholar in the history of the abuses and small victories of women always clarifies what is still yet to be done. In this conversation, our listeners will learn some of what we can each do on a consistent basis to uplift ourselves, and all of womankind. While only vaguely familiar with Alice Paul prior to meeting Wendy, I have come to love and honor this woman who actually wrote the original Equal Rights Amendment. I continue to find that learning a woman's history offers clear signals and directional indicators of how we can progress to become an empowered body. I trust that each of you will receive incredible nuggets of wisdom from this conversation. BIO Wendy Murphy has served as an adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, for over 15 years. Where she also co-directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. In 1992 she founded the first organization in the nation to provide pro bono legal services to crime victims. Wendy is an impact litigator whose work in state and federal courts has changed the law to better protect the constitutional and civil rights of victimized women and children. She writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children, and criminal justice policy and is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is a well-known television legal analyst. She has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN, and Fox News, and regularly provides legal analysis for network and cable news programs. Her first book, “And Justice For Some,” was published by Penguin/Sentinel in 2007, and re-released in paperback in 2013.
“I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights, especially as it pertains to women, I came into it organically.” An alternative in case that requires too much space. “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights…I came into it organically.” Wendy Murphy Having the opportunity to welcome Wendy Murphy as a guest provided one of the most fascinating and educational conversations on the plight of women that I've ever experienced. From outlining how the law is written to support violence against women to the extent to which there is no one monitoring our judges when they rule in discriminatory ways against women was eye-opening, in the least. Listening to Wendy explain how it is our US Constitution that stands as the underlying cause that allows judges in every courtroom, not just criminal cases, to treat women in a discriminatory way, further ignited my inner passion to fight for women's rights, in my own smaller way. I invite you to join us for this Part 1 of a two-part conversation on what women need to know in order to stand up for themselves on how the minimization of our entire gender is not just alive and well, but legally sanctioned. BIO For more than fifteen years, Wendy Murphy has served as adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, where she also co directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. Wendy writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children and criminal justice policy. She is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report and writes a regular column for The Patriot Ledger. Wendy has published numerous scholarly articles including a landmark law review article explaining the legal relationship between sexual assault on campus and Title IX. Dubbed the “Goddaughter of Title IX” by the “Godmother of Title IX,” Dr. Bernice Sandler, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is also a well-known television legal analyst who Emmy Award-winning journalist Emily Rooney calls the “best talker” on television with a “finger on the pulse of victims' and women's rights.” Wendy has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News. We are on verdict watch in the sex trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell. The wealthy socialite is accused of being a central player in Jeffrey Epstein's decades of sexual abuse of minors. Defense attorneys say Maxwell is a scapegoat taking the fall for a man's misdeeds. Four victims testified in this case, however Maxwell did not. The defense portrays Maxwell as a victim, and the accusers as basically in it for the money Epstein's estate set aside for victims of his abuse after his death. In the next feature of our new series of interviews looking at how the RNIB is working in partnership with charities and organisations across the sight loss sector to make a more inclusive and accessible society for blind and partially sighted people, Connect Radio's Toby Davey checks in with members of the Strategic Engagement Lead - Third Sector Team here at the RNIB this time to focus on the work of the Eye Health Advocacy Project. The new Eye Health Advocacy Project is here to help patients access eye care. RNIB believes that everyone should have fair access to the eye health services that benefit them. We will advise on the steps patients can take if they are faced with barriers or delays accessing eye health services. Toby was joined by Andrea Glover - RNIB Strategic Engagement manager and Chris Glanville Legal Rights Adviser to find out more about the Eye Health Advocacy Project. Andrea began by outlining how the Eye Health Advocacy project fits within all the partnership working at the RNIB. Chris then explained how the project is helping to break down barriers faced by blind and partially sighted people when they access eye health services, such as making appointments, attending clinic appointments, eye surgery, etc. Chris also gave some examples on how the project has helped a number of blind and partially sighted people within the first 5 months of the project starting up as well as how people can be referred to the service. If you or a partner organisation that represents you is facing barriers when accessing eye health services, then you can contact Chris via email christine.glanville@rnib.org.uk or call the RNIB Helpline and ask for the Eye Health Advocacy Project Team. On this episode of the en(gender)ed podcast, our guest is Wendy Murphy, a former child abuse and sex crimes prosecutor who teaches at New England Law School in Boston and heads the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. Wendy specializes in the representation of crime victims, especially women and children. She also writes and lectures widely on victims' rights and criminal justice policy, and published an expose of the American legal system, And Justice For Some, in 2007. We speak with Wendy today about the ERA, its implication for women, especially with respect to Title IX, and the need for a feminist revolution in public policy, law, and in our collective consciousness. During our conversation, Wendy and I referenced the following resources: Big Love's misuse of "consent" as an analytical framework for polygamy The difference between the use of "consent" versus "autonomy" in crimes involving sex-based violence The discrepancy between how the law treats sex-based harm and other forms of harm, and how "consent" is used as a criteria, versus civil rights criteria of "unwelcome" Data manipulation of gender-based violence Dawn Wilcox's work in creating a femicide database How proponents of "Restorative Justice" and decriminalization of prostitution use "consent" as a justification for coercion and exploitation The impact of "de-sexing" of language An analysis of the policy impact of conflating "sex" and "gender identity" The inability of women to talk about "sex" as a political class TItle IX and Title VI and the Equality Act's implications for members of the transgender community and for cis women The Biden Administration's tacit and explicit opposition to the ERA Wendy's support for a new "Women's Party" or union --- Thanks for tuning in to the en(gender)ed podcast! We also discuss the complicated issues of why a person stays in an abusive relationship. Domestic violence is not black and white; the shades of grey can keep someone in danger for a long time. Most importantly, we talk about what bystanders can do to help and how just being a listening ear helps victims. Below, are the resources listed in the first episode. My hope is that someone who needs help will reach out or that a bystander will get familiar with the domestic violence resources in their community. That way, the bystander can (when the time is right) offer suggestions for the person they care about. Although Domestic Violence Awareness month is celebrated in October, this issue should be openly discussed all year long. Thank you for listening and your interest in this important topic. Sometimes success is getting out of an abusive relationship and reclaiming your identity. In this episode, I interview Lovern Gordon, President and Founder of Love Life Now Foundation (www.lovelifenow.org). Lovern is passionate about giving victims of domestic violence the information they need to become survivors. In this frank, honest interview Lovern describes how her first experience with domestic violence started in her home island of Trinidad During her childhood she and her siblings were exposed to brutal domestic violence of their father on their mother that was culturally accepted in her community. After achieving permanent residency in the United States, Lovern began to live a good life of attending college and working in corporate America. Unfortunately, the good life she was building turned dark when she met her abuser and started a two year abusive relationship. Like many victims of domestic violence Lovern's story started as a fairy tale romance but as you will hear there were warning signs along the way. This is part one of a two part episode where we lay the ground work for how abuse can start, answer the age old question of "why did she stay" and finishes with the birth of Love Life Now Foundation. In part two, we will explore the different types of abuse and the warning signs. While The Rabble podcast is on break, we are revisiting some of our favorite episodes. We were so inspired by Glenaan O'Neil of the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project, who is cheerfully persisting first after battling cancer and then after having funding pulled for her fledgling nonprofit. We love her hilarious self and her mission of advocating for immigrant victims of domestic abuse in rural Texas. Plus, Ed Scruggs of Texas Gun Sense is back to explain "red flag laws" and "mandatory buy-backs." The incredible folks at the Texas Freedom Network are looking out for all the peens and vags (and everything in between), and they tell us how to help. This episode first aired September 20, 2019. Judith Davey became CEO of The Advocacy Project in 2016. She came into an organisation that had experienced a lot of change - they had staff who were proud to work there but who didn't feel connected to the vision. Previously Deputy CEO of ActionAid, Judith bought her skills and corporate background to really empower and support positive change. And the organisation is truly innovative. Over 50% of the Trustees have lived experience of the issues that the charity is supporting, and to ensure a diverse board they pay Trustees the national living wage. It's also Unitary Board which is unusual in the charity sector and means that Judith is also a full trustee, sharing the responsibility for the success of the charity. In this podcast, you'll hear the challenges she faced and how everyone in The Advocacy Project really live their values. Katya Dow is the legal program director for the Juvenile and Capital Advocacy Project. She is also a legal practice law professor at the University of Houston Law Center. Two of her students are with her: Tressa Surratt and Lizzie Lawrie. The Juvenile Records Sealing Project helps individuals with juvenile records to expunge those records. (We are not talking about violent crimes, here.) This is a long process that really needs a lawyer’s experience to get through and Katya discusses how they’re making this happen for more and more Houstonians by tapping into the University of Houston’s renewable pool of talent! Tressa and Lizzie talk about their first experiences in court and with their young clients. For more information on JCAP’s free services: www.jcaptexas.org
This week host John Voket brings you a Special Report featuring three perspectives from the recent AAA Drugged Driving Summit. With voters in Massachusetts making marijuana available for recreational use, AAA convened the summit to help get law enforcement officials, prosecutors, lawmakers and traffic safety experts together to examine how our state will deal with the inevitable increase in drugged drivers heading back from Massachusettes in the near future. We're also replaying a segment with Connecticut's Teen Legal Advocacy Project focusing on how the agency's Mobile Legal Clinic is helping more than 3,000 state youths who are homeless or living without permanent parental support.
Guests: Katya Dow; Brian Fischer
This week on the award-winning For the People, host John Voket is on a mission to reach millions of state seniors 60 and over who qualify for the financial and health benefits of SNAP - but have yet to apply. Then we'll get up to speed on the latest news about electric cars, and invite you to a free upcoming event to get you into the driver's seat. And we'll close chatting up a different kind of vehicle - the Connecticut's Teen Legal Advocacy Project 's Mobile Legal Clinic - and learn how it's already serving more than 3,000 state youths who are homeless or living without sustainable support systems.
