Thomas rolls in riding the Super Bowl champ high (full hat, jersey, and apparently socks and underwear too), and the crew kicks things off with a Valentine's-themed Question of the Week: what's the "flowers" equivalent for men? From there, it's a full Super Bowl rundown: a defense-heavy game, a halftime show that hit hard for the culture heads in the room, and commercials that landed (and a few that didn't). Then the episode pivots back into geek mode with reactions to a Baldur's Gate TV series in development, more love for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as it ramps toward its Trial of Seven moment, and optimism for Disney's Eragon series thanks to the creative team involved. The back half is all Fallout Season 2, with the crew landing in the "good, not great" zone while still getting hyped for what Season 3 could pay off. You also get network updates, convention panel plans, and weekly recommendations to close it out. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Welcome in, Thomas' Super Bowl champ victory lap 01:30 Question of the Week: what's the "flowers" equivalent for men? 05:00 Super Bowl reactions: defense wins championships, Seahawks nostalgia, "Dark Side" vibes 08:20 Halftime show talk: Bad Bunny, cultural references, and why it hit for the whole room 12:00 More halftime highlights: Green Day shoutout, Ricky Martin surprise, who should headline next? 15:45 Favorite Super Bowl ads + why the Mando spot felt weirdly caught in the middle 18:00 Trailer talk: what the Super Bowl did (and didn't) deliver this year 22:05 Baldur's Gate TV series discussion: big potential, big concerns (and the Larian question) 26:10 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4 hype, pacing praise, and "short and punchy" working 35:20 Eragon series at Disney+: why it might finally work this time 42:10 Fallout Season 2 review: what worked, what dragged, and where Season 3 needs to go 55:40 Network updates: new host announcements, recent episodes, Survivor 50 build-up 57:40 Convention panel plans: comics, game dev, podcasting, Kickstarter marketing 58:50 Recommendations of the week (including The Smashing Machine) Key Takeaways Thomas' Super Bowl joy is basically a case study in "I don't believe it until it's real," and that made the win hit even harder. The crew's "flowers for men" answers are wildly revealing: gift cards for movies and games, Legos as a seasonal tradition, and the underrated power of small thoughtful grabs. The halftime show conversation lands on something bigger than music: representation, cultural shoutouts, and why certain moments connect differently when your household speaks the language. The Mandalorian & Grogu Super Bowl spot discussion nails the core frustration: it didn't fully serve as a trailer or as a commercial, so it split the difference and lost impact. Baldur's Gate as a TV playground sounds like a great idea, but the lack of Larian involvement raises real "are they just using the name?" concerns. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms keeps winning people over because it feels like it belongs in Westeros without trying to copy the tone of the flagship shows. Eragon could finally pop with Disney backing it, especially if the show uses budget smartly and nails the dragon work. Fallout Season 2 feels more like the game experience (factions, doors opening, long quests) which is cool for gamers but can make the season feel more like setup than payoff. Memorable Quotes "Wear the hat, the jersey, the socks, the underwear. All the above." "Defense wins championships." "Theaters are sacred to me." "I don't like flowers because you're watching them die." "This isn't your Game of Thrones. Don't buy this for a Game of Thrones." "It was good. I don't think it was great." HBO is developing a Baldur's Gate TV series with Craig Mazin (The Last of Us) attached, and the big twist is that it's being described as a follow-up to Baldur's Gate 3, not a straight adaptation. I break down why that's both exciting and risky, especially with Larian not involved, and how the show might handle the game's multiple endings without instantly dividing the fanbase. We also talk about what to watch for next, like casting, the returning character question, and whether HBO leans into practical locations or goes heavy on CGI. 00:00 HBO developing Baldur's Gate TV series with Craig Mazin attached 00:13 Larian not being involved and why that worries fans 00:13 The show is a continuation after Baldur's Gate 3, using the wider D&D rule set 00:26 The canon problem: multiple endings and how the show might handle it 00:37 Optimism check: HBO + Hasbro money, plus The Last of Us as a recent success story 00:51 What to watch for next: casting, returning names, CGI vs on-location filming HBO is developing a Baldur's Gate series with Craig Mazin attached in a major creative role. The show is framed as a follow-up set after Baldur's Gate 3, not a retelling. Larian not being involved is the biggest immediate red flag for a lot of fans. The biggest storytelling challenge is picking (or avoiding) a canon ending in a game built around choice. The next real “proof it's happening” moment will be casting and visual approach (CGI-heavy vs real-world locations). “If you play the game, you know there are multiple endings, so what is Craig going to pick as the canon ending… it's a little risky.” “We're getting a D&D series with HBO and Hasbro money back in this thing… so while I'm cautious about this, I'm trying to stay optimistic.” If you enjoyed this breakdown, subscribe to Geek Freaks Headlines, leave a quick review, and share the episode using #GeekFreaksHeadlines.GeekFreaksPodcast.com (source for all news covered on the show)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegeekfreakspodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/geekfreakspodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekfreakspodThreads: https://www.threads.net/@geekfreakspodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/GeekFreakspodcastGot thoughts on what ending should be “canon” for a Baldur's Gate show, or which companion absolutely has to return? Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, whacked the beehive again by saying that gaming journos and critics should get scored themselves on Metacritic, and that they're awfully... mean. Dann immer her damit. Sorry for missing last week's Bugonia episode—turns out it was 100% Gibbs' fault. Recording mishap, lost files, the usual. So naturally, we've decided to title this episode Bugonia (2025) instead, even though the actual movie we're reviewing is… Aloha (2015). Yes, that Aloha. And yes, it's every bit the joke you remember. Before diving into cinematic regret, the crew gets into AI art in video games and Larian's latest self-inflicted dumpster fire, followed by Gibbs recounting a near–Final Destination experience dodging children at a skating rink. Zea also drops in for a surprise visit, adding to the chaos. We do a quick, mercy-driven check-in on Bugonia (since we owe you one), then fully commit to diving into Aloha (2015)—a movie so bafflingly miscast and tone-deaf that it almost feels like performance art.Support us on Patreon!
Well, we brought it up last week, and this episode will finalize our series by looking back at the year that was for the three major console makers, as it's now Xbox's turn to get its 2025 Report Card. Sean and Marc go through the highs and lows of Xbox throughout the year, the game releases, and also look ahead to 2026 as the company is already promising a huge year ahead. This also brings us to a sour subject for many gamers, and that's Generative A.I., as Larian Studios and Sandfall Interactive both make news for their uses of it, and should it lead to the retracting of awards and vitriol online. Is the outlook for A.I. all grim? Or can there be some good use cases for it? Sean also has thoughts on the indie game Unbeatable. Marc's played more Ghost of Yotei; join us for the final regular episode of Video Games 2 the MAX for 2025. As Lord Cognito long predicted, the AI conversation reached a breaking point online when people saw one of the industry's golden children announced that they'll be using generative AI for their game's development. That team is Larian Studios who is responsible for the Divinity franchise alongside the incredible Baldur's Gate 3. The CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke, said that it will be used for mostly pre-production stuff along the lines of whiteboxing or even company e-mails. However, he also let it slip that concept art ideation will be part of that process as an optional tool. Well, social media did not like this at all. It has turned into one of the most split topics to round out 2025. So, where do the Dukes stand? Matty, a longtime critic of AI's usage in development beyond a tool, happens to be a massive Larian fan. Does he bend the knee? What of Lord Cognito who always expected this? Does he blink at such a revelation? Perhaps, it's all overblown. There is a reality where we're years down the line and Larian is on a long list of developers who are all doing the same thing. On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Riley convene one last time to close out 2025, a notably horrible year for the world but a pretty solid one for Aftermath. We begin by talking about a controversy that was unexpected, to say the least: Larian, riding a wave of goodwill by making perhaps the ultimate example of a big game for people and by people in Baldur's Gate 3, ran right off the road by openly embracing AI. The studio's CEO, Swen Vincke, has spent the past several days both digging his heels in and doing damage control, but the furor continues. Will the studio change its ways? Or will those of us opposed to AI have a difficult decision to make when Larian's next and apparently biggest game, Divinity, comes out in… probably still a lot of years? Then we hand out our first ever Stuff Of The Year awards to the games, trends, events, people, cats, nontroversies, and everything else that defined our 2025. Finally, we come up with a rock-solid concept for Aftermath Muppets.Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, and Riley MacLeod- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Small bomb dropped when indie darling Larian revealed it uses AI in the preproduction and ideation phase of game development. Naturally, opinions deviate strongly, especially because artists have left Larian over their use of AI. In this episode, we discuss Jason Schreier's Bloomberg interview with Larian CEO Swen Vincke. Specifically, we discuss Vincke's quote about how Larian uses AI, and what, if any positive effect it has had. For the full context and a great read - check out the full article here: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-12-16/-baldur-s-gate-3-maker-promises-divinity-will-be-next-level It is no secret that neither of us are fans of AI, but I take the devil's advocate position this episode. I do actually think there are spots where AI could help creatives with busy work. (Our problem is: we all know that isn't what AI is targeting.)

The Game Awards have come and gone, leaving in its wake a whirlwind of game announcements, release date reveals, and fresh perspectives on our industry. Indeed, there's something for everyone, a draw for all comers. For starters, what's new? Two Star Wars offerings, Larian's secret Divinity project, Jonathan Blow's long-awaited Order of the Sinking Star, a sequel to Remedy's Control, Toshihiro Nagoshi's anticipated Yakuza rival Gang of Dragon, two Tomb Raider games in the form of a remake and something unseen, a Cyberpunk-like called NO LAW, and even Mega Man 12 -- well, Mega Man Dual Override, anyway -- to keep Colin fed, and more beyond that. And new looks, too, at PlayStation games like Saros and 4:LOOP, as well as Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Exodus, and Phantom Blade 0. And then there are the awards themselves, and the pomp and circumstance, and... well... there's a lot to discuss! Plus, we have all of the non-TGA happenings from the past week, too. PlayStation Wrap-Up is live, Deviation's cancelled second party shooter has leaked, London Studio's cancelled multiplayer game has seemingly reemerged under a new team, Call of Duty might be in trouble, and so on. Then: Listener inquiries! Could MLB: The Show succeed on PC with a Football Manager-style experience? Does Netflix really see no value in WB's gaming assets? Is a rumored $1 million for three minutes of advertising at The Game Awards too much? Remember when Dustin called DW from Arthur Double D? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:27:06 - Sacred Compliments0:33:32 - A happy write in for once0:45:45 - Double D0:48:04 - Slandering the English1:01:45 - Glass Snapple1:09:54 - The Game Awards overall thoughts1:25:51 - Pragmata1:30:02 - Tank Rat1:33:16 - Bradley the Badger1:37:49 - Stupid Never Dies1:42:15 - Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic1:50:40 - Divinity1:57:23 - 4LOOP2:04:34 - Coven of the Chickenfoot2:08:56 - Ontos2:13:45 - Resident Evil Requiem2:15:35 - Order of the Sinking Star2:24:09 - Exodus2:26:48 - Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons2:27:55 - Control Resonant2:35:28 - Gang of Dragon2:41:22 - Street Fighter movie2:45:11 - Lego Batman2:47:39 - Tomb Raider2:56:09 - Saros2:58:32 - NO LAW3:03:56 - DMC Season 23:04:20 - Ace Combat 83:06:40 - Star Wars: Galactic Racer3:07:37 - Out of Words3:10:33 - Phantom Blade 03:12:02 - Mega Man: Dual Override3:20:41 - Highguard3:34:27 - PlayStation Wrap-Up 20253:52:14 - PlayStation 20264:02:32 - Can we thank Flight Sim for Xbox on PlayStation4:09:26 - Deviation's cancelled game has leaked4:24:06 - Ex-London Studio's game reemerges4:35:37 - Maybe Call of Duty isn't doing so great?4:54:32 - Capcom wants to grow their smaller IPs4:58:08 - New PS+ games5:02:35 - What We've Been Playing (Metal Eden, Dying Light: The Beast, Skate Story, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Metroid Prime 4, YARG)5:32:21 - Rise of actors in games5:42:19 - Would Chris and Dustin play sports games?5:50:22 - PlayStation making a Football Manager game5:56:27 - Is WB games "worthless”?6:04:28 - $1 Million for a Game Awards trailer6:09:14 - Refunding Game Pass Learn more about your ad choices.
