Reese and Pam interviewed the infamous Coach Bill Hayes. Coach Hayes has a lifetime coaching record of 195-104-2. He won three championships apiece in the CIAA and MEAC as well as two black college football national championships. Hayes also spent time as an athletic director at North Carolina Central (where he also played in the 1960s), Florida A&M and WSSSU. Coach Hayes is in the Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF). On May 12, Coach Hayes will host "The William "Bill" Hayes Annual Golf Charity Tournament for the Bill and Carolyn Hayes Foundation. Coach Jonas Hayes shares his journey from growing up in Atlanta and going to high school with TI to becoming a D1 Head Coach at Georgia State. Him and his twin brother [Jarvis] attended Western Carolina during their freshman season before transferring to the University of Georgia to play for the Bulldogs in their home state. Jarvis went on to play in the NBA and Jonas began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at Morehouse State then South Carolina State before spending the next five seasons at Belmont Abbey College. The University of Georgia offered him a job in 2012 and he left Belmont Abbey to be on Mark Fox's coaching staff and he remained there until 2018 when he moved on to Xavier where he would be promoted to Associate Head Coach, and then named the Interim Head Coach during the 2022 NIT, Coach Hayes led Xavier to a NIT Championship going 4-0 as the Interim Head Coach despite Sean Miller being hired to be the next Head Coach at Xavier starting in the 2022-23 season. In today's episode, our podcast host Cynthia Yanof connects with Head Football Coach Steve Hayes about the upcoming season. We hear about the Trojan football program, the theme for 2022, the players we have this year, our new division, and our coaching staff. The theme for this year is Fear No Man. The players, after the spring game, vote on the theme. The theme gives the coaches guidance on how to coach the boys. This theme has two components: 1) You have to be in the right relationship with the Lord. This places the emphasis on the kids' hearts and their relationship with Christ. 2) To have no fear, you must be extremely well prepared. The coaching staff read the book Draw the Circle by Mark Batterson this summer. The team is divided into families; each coach prays for the athletes in their family group throughout the season. Coaches are very intentional about praying for players, and Coach Hayes believes when we pray, good things happen. TCA football has six core values, one of which is that we are called to be standard chasers, not rule followers. God created us to excel and not be average. We want our kids to know they have what it takes and that high expectations require high commitment and sacrifice. This year's team is a young team. We had a lot of success last year and graduated many seniors. We have fourteen seniors this year, many of whom started last year, but we will see many new faces on the field this fall. We have talented juniors and sophomores. We had 45 college recruiters come through our program last spring is a good indication of the talent you have on the team. We have a good offensive line, a good running back core, and, with the addition of Defensive Coordinator Reid Waller, our defense has made huge strides and will be good this year. We have been in TAPPS Division 5 for the last two years, and this year we have moved back to Division 1, which includes schools with the largest enrollment in the state. Our district includes Nolan, Parish, Prestonwood, and Bishop Lynch. It will be a very competitive schedule this year, and our goal is to win the state championship. Our first game against ESD is on August 26 at 7 p.m. at Tom Landry Stadium. We have five home games and five on the road with one big road trip to Ft. Bend Christian. We have ten varsity football coaches on our staff. Five of these coaches have been successful head coaches in other programs. The faith and testimonies of our coaches are incredible, as well as their ability to coach and mentor kids. You should be excited about this program if you have sons in TCA athletics. We highly encourage boys to play multiple sports. It is good for kids to be able to experience as much as possible and represent the mission of the school well. Parents with children should be watching the leadership they put their kids under. We are limited on how long we can be an athlete, but athletics' impact on our character is lasting. We want our parents to live out the culture of our school. This is life-giving to the school and those around us. Come out and cheer loud at the games and celebrate on the field after the games! We do that better than any other school. This is Coach Hayes' third season back at TCA. He was also here from 2004 through 2014. His wife Mendy teaches in Frisco, and they have a daughter who is a TCA freshman on the volleyball team. He has two older married kids, and both are expecting babies next year which will be Coach Hayes' first grandchildren! About forty years ago, Ohio State's legendary Head Football Coach Woody Hayes had discovered some members of his Buckeye football squad experimenting with some weight training while down in Coral Gables, Florida. Several members of the Buckeyes were hanging around, after a practice, in a weight room with some Miami Hurricanes football players while on a Sugar Bowl game team trip. The players were actually delaying the bus trip back to the team hotel. Anyway, Coach Hayes did some investigating that day and ended up getting the name of the Hurricanes' strength coordinator, Steve Bliss.    Check out today's ASAP Podcast with Coach Steve Bliss and find out how the strength program at Ohio State was founded. I’m really excited to sit down and talk with Jack Park, Certified Speaking Professional, Corporate Advisor, Football Radio Commentator and Best Selling Author. He has some powerful thoughts about what makes a good leader, plus a bunch of fun stories about football history. Jack formed the business Financial Insights more than 20 years, which does leadership training for corporations and associations across the country. For the past 38 years, he has been a radio commentator for Ohio State Football, with weekly and daily segments when the Buckeyes are in season. About 10 years ago, Jack married his two passions, football and leadership training, and he created The Leadership Secrets of Football’s Master Coaches. It is a leadership program that explains how to develop leadership within an organization or association based upon what made the greatest football coaches of all time so successful. “With almost no exceptions, the great coaches were great coaches because they were even greater leaders than they were coaches.” Jack wraps up his leadership course, The Leadership Secrets of Football’s Master Coaches, by highlighting five coaches: Woody Hayes – What we can learn from Coach Hayes is that you will get to a place in life where you can look back and say, “Gee, I’ve been able to accomplish a fair amount, and I’d sure like to thank those people that helped me get where I am. While you can’t always thank the people that helped you, you can pay it forward. Knute Rockne – “Rockne is the type of guy you want to learn a lot about to help create a new industry.” He helped create American Football, and he teaches us that, “Whatever stage we are within the business world, we can enhance that by looking into the future.” Vince Lombardi – Organizations often try to do too many things. Lombardi’s basic philosophy was to focus on what they could do best, and to become the best at that thing at the exclusion of everything else. “He left a lot behind. He left his leadership model.” Urban Meyer – “Urban is basically the organization man … A lot of coaches have plans, Urban has a system.” He has an excellent system, he’s an excellent recruiter, and he surrounds himself with tremendously talented people. Bo Schembechler – “Bo really put a high priority on the people. Now other coaches do too, but I don’t think anybody ever did it any better than Bo.” There is a story from Michigan State alumni that, if any player ever came to his office unannounced, his secretary was to make sure they didn’t leave until Bo could speak to them. Bo recognized early on that the business he was in was not the football business, but the people business. The one coach that Jack probably uses more than any other, and the coach that Jack ranks as the best of the five, is Vince Lombardi. “Maybe his biggest strength was his persistence.” It took Lombardi 20 years to find a head coaching position, and at one point it was estimated he got turned down 22 times. “He had confidence in himself when other people apparently didn’t,” but he wasn’t arrogant. He continued to hone his craft. Lombardi was successful because he was a hard worker with a dedication to excellence. Between 1959 and 1967, Lombardi led 5 NFL championship victories, in addition to the first two Super Bowls victories, as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Jack has written four books on Ohio State history, which won’t surprise anybody who has heard his amazing stories, and he has a fifth on the way, tentatively titled “Buckeye Reflections.” Jack is working with Maureen Zappala, a motivational speaker, amazing writer and huge football fan. “It’s going to be made up of short, anecdotal stories connected to the Ohio football program: unusual things that have happened, outstanding things that have happened, humorous things that have happened.” I really enjoyed sitting down with Jack and talking to him today.
