Today, we're diving deep into something I have discussed many times from a slightly different perspective. Almost every coach faces challenges when we realize that in addition to doing the work we love, we also have to run a business. The idea and practice of having a coaching business can be overwhelming, but it certainly doesn't have to be. If you want to build a coaching business that reflects your values—where deep relationships, service, and long-term sustainability are front and center—this blog is for you. It's so common to hear about the goals and strategies of other business owners and coaches and think you need to do everything they are doing. BUT, that's not true. Not even close. Everyone has different values, different gifts, and different desires. The key to the real success you are craving, is a unique business that comes out of your natural abilities and human connection. I interviewed Caryn Gillen on the podcast - she is a powerhouse. Caryn helps coaches create businesses they “don't have to recover from.” Wow, if that's not a statement, I don't know what is. She shows coaches that their businesses can work for who they are as a person and the life that they have. Your coaching business can serve your clients, you, your family, and the community you live in–and that's what you'll hear about in this blog.Caryn and I are aligned in our mission in this regard. In fact, this is exactly what called me to reach out to her for an interview. We both believe that a business built with authenticity is one that puts our clients' best interests at the forefront of what we do. I can't wait for you to read more about this here. You'll realize that you're not just building any business, you are building your business–and there are so many ways to help you make your business work for you so you can do what you love without the overwhelm. Why your coaching skills are also your sales skillsI want to highlight one beneficial idea for us to consider as coaches building our business. There are activities in our business that are quick-win activities, and then there are activities that are more for long-term growth. There's not an exact line that is differentiated, but one example is the goal of growing your email list–that will promote long-term growth. But if you're focusing all your energy on growing your list, that will probably not bring in a new client immediately. The connections you make and the discussions you engage in will be the key activities that attract your clients. When it comes to these meaningful relationships, I like to remind my Master Coaches that they are people who want to help and make a difference. We don't become coaches because we are simply “looking for a way to make money.” We begin because we love coaching and connecting with people. Since this is our focus, it's easy to think that we're just not good at sales or marketing. But caring about people–genuinely caring about them–is selling. You can build a consistent and sustainable coaching businessCaryn has been in business and been a business coach for many years. She has excellent insight into some of the best things she did when first starting and some shifts she made in order to create more sustainability in her coaching business. When Caryn became a coach 15 years ago, she charged $20 a session. She is still in touch with one of her clients who paid that price, and he has referred people to her who have paid full price now. This story emphasizes the importance of a relationship-based coaching business. Initially, Caryn was willing to say yes to anything that got her working with clients, getting a dollar through the door, and getting her...
Emotional resilience is often misunderstood, mischaracterized, and sadly, overlooked far too often. Understanding emotional resilience (and how to cultivate it in ourselves and others) is a vital skill for coaches. Not only does this help us guide our clients through overcoming challenges, but our ability to be resilient plays a huge role in running our own businesses, managing the inevitable ups and downs that come, and even our very abilities to coach our clients well. In this episode, my conversation with Melanie Fay highlights just how important resilience is, including the implications for you personally and professionally. It's so important in fact, that it is a core element of the Master Coach Training program. During the course of the year-long program, Master Coaches-in-training develop skills, capacity, and the habits of practices that cultivate emotional resilience long term. It's one of my absolute favorite outcomes of the program. In truth, resilience allows us to show up consistently and steadily for our clients. What most people don't talk about is how much the nervous system impacts our resilience (and that of our clients too). Knowing this, and truly understanding it, means solutions for you as a coach. There are many tools to help bring the nervous system into balance. And while resilience is often associated with “toughness” or “bouncing back,” it goes far beyond that. Resilience is deeply tied to self-connection. When we can connect to ourselves enough to be with the circumstances in our lives, developing resilience becomes easier for us and for our clients.Defining resilience and its role in coachingCultivating emotional resilience–in ourselves and in our clients–is so impactful. In order to fully understand its importance, first let's clarify what resilience truly means. In the podcast episode, we talk about two key interpretations:The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. These are both valid perspectives on resilience that speak to two very different places within ourselves. There is no single path to resilience—the most important aspect is helping clients find their own way to cultivate and expand upon it.The first definition, “The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties,” heavily relates to the nervous system. When we work with our nervous system–our embodied response to outside stimuli–we can stay more level and present. That is a crucial form of resilience. Create space for your clients to be who they areThe second definition of resilience, “the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape,” highlights another essential aspect of coaching. When we create space for our clients to process pain, emotions, and challenges, we give them the ability to get back into alignment with their true selves.Resilience is not about clinging to difficult emotions or denying them; it is about allowing thoughts and feelings to surface without identifying too closely with them. The more distance they have from the circumstances in their lives, the better able we–as highly skilled coaches–are able to create a space of observation and acceptance where the client can see what they need. This allows them to experience the greater clarity and wisdom that will help them bounce back.Self-connection is the foundation of resilienceSelf-connection is a core principle of Master Coach Training. If you have ever wondered what having a Human Design Deep Dive with a true professional (of over 20 years experience!) looks and feels like, this week's episode is for you. Especially for any Manifestors, especially Emotional Manifestors. This week, Victoria Fenton gives you a window into how her mind works. She explains the full background to the Human Design Bodygraph, along with her trainings with Ra Uru Hu… and then she launches into a full, and immersive, explanation of her friend and Unveil colleague Brace Harris. Now, Victoria has obviously given Brace overviews before - but she has never actually given him the Deep Dive immersive experience that people benefit from when they work with her directly. As you will witness, Brace has multiple insights into the way he's been conditioned to behave, and how to move differently through the world from now on. This isn't just about Brace's design, however. Victoria provides a window into: Profiles The 4 Types What the auras of Human Design are all about Why this is about “Decision Making” The nature of openness The instinct of the Spleen Emotional Waves The not-self strategies which breathe uncertainty into the way we move through life How openness, profile lines and planetary information can create conflict Informing as a strategy Design Envy 7 Year Deconditioning (is it really necessary?!) The relationship between Human Design and Gene Keys Summer School and what Victoria is going to be teaching on Gene Keys this August for our course attendees And Victoria also shows you what Human Design is trying to achieve - the orientation to body awareness, and those who can get to “deconditioned” WITHOUT knowing their Design. If you've ever wanted to witness what it's like to watch someone weave with the archetypes of the Ancient I Ching and talk about a Bodygraph in a way that makes it come alive - THIS is the episode for you. Brace's chart image is here (though watch on YouTube for a better experience this week): Mentioned in this podcast: Victoria's Human Design Services now hang out at Unveil Human Design Join us at The Unveil Academy for our Coach Training Certification The Unveil Newsletter - Sign up Now And do Subscribe to our podcast if you want to receive more content like this. On today's Unveil Podcast, Victoria Fenton is joined by fellow Brit and now fellow local Austinite, James Williams. James is a High Performance Coach - and we get into what that truly means during the interview. James is, alongside his wife Emily, currently leading the Mastermind which our founder is a part of - and during this episode you will hear how James delivers immense service to those with whom he works. We also get into James's history. In 2015 James was on the tail end of a 12 year career that wasn't bringing out the best in him, so he chose to make a change and go against the grain of what he was taught was possible. He left his old life to join his wife, Emily, in her online business, whilst training as a coach and studying. In 2016, a year to the day he left his old career, he was certified as a High Performance Coach through the Institute of High Performance. Today, his strengths are in designing and communicating personal recipes for mental, emotional and physical growth. He is passionate about focusing on creating outer world impact through inner world mastery - and during this episode you will get a glimpse into James's personal philosophy around the world of High Performance, and how that isn't just about strategies and tactics, or adding the next best hack or gadget. Instead, it is all about two things: the present moment, and the business of you. Enjoy today's episode - and you can find James in a couple of places across the interwebs. First, his personal coaching work can be found at The Growth Edge. Secondly, he works with a lot of the programs run by Emily Williams over at I Heart My Life Follow James on Instagram, or hunt him down on LinkedIn - he's @jamesrswilliams And stay tuned to James's socials over the coming months - as he hints at during this episode, there's some exciting things on the horizon for him! Join Victoria and Brace this episode as they unpack addiction, in all its forms. They talk about: What could be classified as an addiction, and whether the distinction of an addiction versus normal behavior should be more ‘grey' The purpose of an addiction and the reasons addictions exist The first step in moving through an addiction The way the coaching container develops as addictions are addressed How the complexities of addiction mean that you are ultimately dealing with initial ‘causes' and multifaceted consequences - but how that really doesn't mean that healing from addiction requires unpacking and apologizing for every consequence The brilliance, and potential harm, within the 12 step process The shame of addiction and how to work with that The falseness of the statement “you are never healed” The problem with the labels of addiction, sobriety and ‘Recovered' addict This is such a deep and explorative episode. Victoria takes the reigns as she describes her work with addicts and those with serious dependencies on substances. She walks you through her different approach which takes a trauma-informed lens when it comes to addiction: and the process of being more with oneself, and more with each single individual moment - which argues against the necessity of a cold turkey approach to overcoming substance dependence. A hugely revelatory episode, we hope that this brings you some insights, awareness and different ways to think about addictions, addicts and your own addictive tendencies. As always: like, subscribe, share - and this time, really importantly, if you know someone facing addiction, send this episode to them to offer some support. On our first full interview episode, Victoria Fenton is joined by colleague, mentor and coach Emily Williams. Emily is a success coach, author, podcast host and CEO who, at one point, couldn't get a job at Starbucks. After experiencing a quarter-life crisis, she moved from Ohio to London (where she knew no one!) and in 2014 launched her company, I Heart My Life. She made $442 in her first month—and then went on to hit six figures in six months, before her 30th birthday. She grew her business into seven figures in under 18 months. Today, Emily works with ambitious, heart-centered women all over the world in helping them bust through the obstacles that hold their dreams and goals hostage so they can free themselves to create a life that's better than their dreams through her company's membership, courses and retreats. This episode covers that success story, in brief, but digs more into what Emily has been through in the last year with her business. After the success, what do you do when things don't feel right anymore? How can you make the tough decisions which are in your heart, but - on the surface at least - look like they might threaten what you have built. Emily is a friend of Unveil - and, as Victoria shares in the opening of the podcast, a VERY big part of how Victoria is able to be in the US and building what you see now. For that reason, it was important to the Unveil family to have Emily on FIRST, and to share with you her light, energy and her deeply infectious belief that absolutely anything is possible. Find Emily on social media @emilywilliams I Heart My Life Join the Waitlist for the I Heart My Life Membership If you've been bitten by Emily's beliefs in what's possible for you, but a membership isn't for you, we highly encourage trying the I Heart My Life Course. Listen to Emily interview some awesome guests on the I Heart My Life Podcast. And, we'll have him on the podcast soon, but if you want to know more about James - find him on social media @jamesrswilliams - and whilst he's deeply involved in the work with Emily at I Heart My Life, you can explore his coaching work at The Growth Edge. Today's episode is a complex exploration of one of the most important topics, and experiences, that we as humans live through: Shame. All-pervasive and complex in its manifestations and results, shame can be obvious or subtle in the ways it shows up, maneuvers and even manipulates our lives. Join Victoria Fenton and Brace Harris as they explore this topic in great depth, including a discussion of: Why shame exists - and the difference between toxic shame and healthy shame What makes shame toxic The inextricable link between shame and trauma, and how it is often shame that interrupts the completion of the cycle of response to trauma, meaning that a trauma imprint is laid down The many reaches of shame - and how it is linked to agency and the feeling of being in control Real life examples of how one experience, with different context, can mean the difference between something creating shame, or not The way to navigate through the landscape of personal shame: we give you the literal “how-to” of the dance of allowing shame to evaporate The process of metabolizing shame How Human Design can help in the movement through shame This is a really deep episode in which Victoria leads you, the listener, through the dance with, around and through one of the most powerful influences within the whole of human experience. As ever, she shares deeply and personally about her relationship with, and current work on, her own shame. Victoria also discusses - for the first time - her concept of shame in leadership, and her energetic movement into a leadership role which honors flaws and weaknesses without needing to feel ashamed of them just because she is in a position of leadership. This is a truly deep and powerful episode, with a lot of wisdom and incredible insights shared from the Unveil Team. The theme for today's episode is all about why we prevent ourselves from doing what we know we "should" do - or perhaps even really want to do. We discuss: The advantageous 'reasons' for self-sabotage The intricate ways in which we convince ourselves of the justification for our sabotage Different ways in which we can sabotage ourselves - and some of them you may not even realize were sabotage! Why we never see our sabotage until we need to deal with it - and how that can often take years The underlying survival mechanisms at play within all of this People pleasing and illness being a survival strategy of self-sabotage This is perhaps one of the most varied Unveil Podcast episodes ever! Victoria and Brace share their personal sabotage stories and it leads them into a wide-ranging discussion about the discipline of acting (and why Improv is an allegory for life), and so much more. A fun episode, with some important updates at the start from the Unveil crew. Today's Unveil Podcast episode is a real insight into the way we, as humans, try to rationalize away our sensations/impulses and move on from painful experiences - when the truth is that sham acceptance simply prolongs the painful nature of the memory. Inspired by a recent quadcast between podcast legends @lukestorey @cal.callahan @joshtrentofficial and @doctormitozen - this episode tackles the very final elements of what was an epic and brilliant podcast about all sorts of things. Without wanting to criticize their statements at all, @victorialfenton felt there was more nuance to add to their conclusions about everything being meant to be, and there being a perfection to all things in the universe, including evil. To be clear, as we state in this podcast, we do genuinely believe that for those having that discussion, this was their reality - and a really grounded place that they have found themselves within. Our podcast just adds color and breadth to those conclusions in order to honor something that is essential BEFORE we can arrive at those places of peace within the struggle: process. This is a hugely varied discussion, yet again - and Victoria covers some of our unique integrative modalities as she explains: When things have to be resolved in the soma, emotions or psyche When things literally cannot be resolved in the inner realms and physiological interventions are required The trauma-response inherent in escaping the present moment experience in an attempt to get to “it was all meant to be” How to be within the present, lived experience without bypassing - and why it's necessary And so, so much more… a great episode which also includes all of the Academy updates, Founding Member pricing, funding options and a tonne more. Victoria Fenton takes the lead this week as we announce our Coach Training Certification by talking about one of the topics dear to our heart: clarity of communication within the coaching industry. And we begin with "Nervous System Regulation". (Watch the YouTube video at: bit.ly/episode31video) A buzzword-phrase, a soundbite - and a sentence rich with potentially confusing interpretations which our Unveilers break down in this episode. What the heck does this even mean Is having a regulated nervous system really the "key to life" (clue: not exactly, and it very much depends - and it depends on what you really mean by 'regulated') What the nervous system is SUPPOSED to be doing 100% of the time When regulation really isn't the point or the desired outcome How having 'regulated' as your goal denies the reality of the lived experience The role of regulation and how to actually do it (simply) when you do need to The times when you really shouldn't be looking at regulation at all We also talk about the change-up in the Unveil dynamic and hint at a few announcements that we will make NEXT week on the podcast, as things at Unveil HQ change somewhat and we bring some launches FORWARD due to high demand. (We're sorry, we don't mean to tease, but we want to have somewhere to send you when we announce all the new things coming from Unveil and beyond!) What an Episode, what a week, what a journey our Unveilers are on! This week, Brace Harris and Victoria Fenton are REUNITED! But, as they reveal on this Episode, not for long... During this Episode Victoria discusses the challenges she has faced since being back in LA, and how this has caused her to ask deep questions and really come to terms with listening to the signals that the Universe has been sending. As such, this Episode becomes a discussion about how to listen to those signals, and follow the call that comes from the world around you towards where you truly need to be. As ever, these kinds of processes to not lead to decisions which have no impact. In order to navigate through listening to the call, Victoria had to have some really challenging conversations, including ones with Brace. They share how they, as a partnership, navigate through these challenging conversations, how they remain a stand for one another even when it would seem like they could turn against each other - and Brace shares how his mission has always been to come back to the table in the face of Victoria's whirlwind. This is a really revealing Episode, as ever. Victoria shares what's underneath the latest round of decisions - and there are some HUGE announcements made about the upcoming Unveil Coach Training Certification, Victoria's memoir (which is being released soon) and a new member of the Unveil family arriving in August. In a typically deep, diverse and intimate episode, Brace Harris and Victoria Fenton tackle the topic of "success" this week. They cover: What is success really - and the differentiation between success and prosperity The difference between external 'success' and happiness The weight of expectation and milestones: how not keeping up or meeting our idea of success negatively affects how we perceive ourselves Determining if we are happy and successful, or if we just think we are The route to change if we realize that we aren't living a life we love Whilst sharing their personal challenges with meeting expectations (their own, and that of others'), Victoria also details the errors in approach of the coaching community - and how things are said, but are not often meant. And the danger in expecting change instead of truly accepting reality. Victoria goes into detail about her journey at the moment, and discusses the very real emotions that can come up when we recognize that we are not living a life that we are truly feeling in love with. Today's episode is a really fun one! Brace and Victoria begin in classic “Yank and the Brit” style before moving into an in-depth discussion of motivation. Much more than your typical “what makes us do what we do?” Podcast, during this conversation Brace and Victoria cover: Healthy and unhealthy motivations: is there a difference? What makes a motivation unhealthy? How can you tell when something IS unhealthy? The difference between driving forces, and them motivating us to action (i.e. distinguishing between drives and motivators) How to prevent a drive from becoming a defining motivator (and when it's necessary) The essence of what affects our motivations: from biological and genetic factors, to societal pressures and “keeping up with the Jones's” And then, as is now custom for our Unveilers, Victoria leads Brace into a metaphysical discussion about the meaning of life and the purpose or role of suffering in creating outcomes. She chats about her latest contemplations around whether we are all just justifying suffering by making our challenges into hero's journeys - and whether there really is any truth to the Rumi adages of “The cure for the pain is in the pain” and “Pain is the conduit to healing”. Yes - it goes deep! And why? Because we at Unveil are continuously inviting you to see belief and truth for what they are: subjective and mutable. These podcast discussions open the doorway to new ways of thinking. Speaking of which! This week's podcast episode is all about wanting other people to change: Are we allowed to? Isn't the rule that we have to change first? Do we really need to be the change we want to see? Can we ask others to change for us? In typical Unveil fashion, @braceharris and @victoriafenton turn the concept of hoping for others to change on its head. They discuss: Whether it's all on you and you need to be the thing first before others will change for you The difference between wanting change from a chosen partner, and hoping for change from a family member How to know where the boundary is, and when it is a “you” thing, vs. when it is truly about the other Radical responsibility: what that truly means and how to implement it in your life Whether others really change if you change How to compromise, what to give up - and what you are truly asking when you request a change from someone else As ever, Brace and Victoria take you on a tour of the human condition, evaluating and discussing how to navigate relationships and self-work - and the balance between the two. Today the Unveil Team talk all about Procrastination: what is behind it when we avoid either small, everyday tasks or the pursuit of big goals? During the show, @braceharris and @victorialfenton discuss: The ways we procrastinate and the cunning things we do to avoid doing the things we're supposed to be doing What is underneath procrastination around little everyday life tasks, which turns into a discussion around the avoidance of “adulting” and what it means like to take care, and be taken care of What is behind the procrastination of moving towards big goals - and this is a jumping off point into a conversation about Coaching versus Healing, and Management versus Healing They then talk about the difference between adopting strategies to succeed, versus truly addressing the patterns underneath which are leading to procrastination in the first place This is a delightful exploration of habit formation, the strategies we adopt and why we protect ourselves with behaviors that seem, on the surface, to be creating only problems and consequences. And your hosts share tips and tricks for building greater awareness and shifting some of these habits if they're affecting your life. As ever with the Unveil Team, this episode explores the nature of human consciousness and why we choose to do things that cause us to think negatively about ourselves - and how to move through that shame and guilt, and move towards resolving what is underneath your habits and procrastination. This episode takes the topic of "need" and explores how we can identify, ask for and navigate the process of getting what we need. We also update you, our listeners, on the complete change in the Unveil business plans - and use this as the framework to discuss the whole process of establishing what we need, and the how-to (and how-not-to) of asking for those needs to be met. During this episode, we discuss: the movement in the Unveil plans and how Victoria Fenton and Brace Harris are navigating these changes by identifying what they really need how to identify what you need, and how that is often different to what you think you might need what to do when you've realized what you need: how to go about asking for it how asking FOR something is very different to asking for PERMISSION for something how masculine and feminine energies operate differently around being in a place of need, and the way they ask for their needs to be met Mentioned in this podcast: The Unveil Workshop: unveilenterprises.com/workshop The Unveil Newsletter: unveilenterprises.com/signup Apply to Work With Unveil: unveilenterprises.com/apply Enjoy the episode - and, as always - like, share, subscribe, follow and send to your friends! A big episode this week, as Brace Harris and Victoria Fenton share their latest musings which have been influencing the development of the first ever Unveil Weekend Workshop - which we announce and talk about in this episode. And this episode is all about the concept of Self Love. In the age of meme-culture and positive mental attitudes, the Unveil Master Coaches meander through a fascinating discussion which covers: What is the actual "self" that we are supposed to love? What is the nature of "identity" - and are we all merely constructs of behavior patterns? If so, where do we learn those behaviors? Re-contextualizing trauma: a discussion which brings into focus what trauma really is, and what experiences can leave trauma imprints (this topic features heavily in the upcoming Transformational Healing Retreat course) How forms of stress create adaptation patterns, and the consequences that leads to And, ultimately, how do you love all of this about yourself? The Unveil Team discuss how everything can be OK, and you can love everything, AND still want to work on yourself to release some stored behavior patterns. Another whirlwind of an episode where we touch on a tonne of topics and tease a lot of the upcoming work that will be released from the Unveil Team in 2022.
